I love how they explain how high tech the systems are on the ship , but yet could not tell the difference from a passenger liner from a F 14, and my God , why would you get medals for this ?
As high tech a ship can be, there is always "possibility". Especially during war stress and when just a year before you've been attacked first by a plane that identified as civilian jet airplane actually modified to carry missiles (USS Stark Incident). That is part of the risk working near or in the warzone. Also, it happened back at 1988. Back then Internet & GPS hardly existed yet, even on commercial level. If there is a thing I agreed with the internet, it would be the "medal" stuffs which shouldn't be given.
Serving in the US NAVY myself for 13 years and being aboard a nuclear class submarine, without a doubt this captain was looking for someone to fire upon. We've had so many discussions about it and I've never met any sailor who agrees with the captains actions. He intentionally went within 3 miles of shore, he was told multiple times it was a civi airliner. Of course the navy found him innocent, in there eyes 120+ future enemies were killed
There's many factors But over all, I agree That captain was warned But in reality he had a life or death situation . No one will really truly know what went on in the heads of both crews Especially the iranian aircrafts crew, we will never know . Criticize me if you so choose And If your still in the navy, good luck and fair seas
I would disagree that the captain was looking for someone to fire upon as A.) He was already in a naval battle. B.) He had 10 warnings sent out, and C.) He waited until THE VERY LAST MINUTE to shoot. No one looking for someone to shoot waits until the last minute, if he was he'd had fired off the missiles as soon as he possibly could.
@@Reaperdeathpunch he was the one who put an AEGIS cruiser in a battle with gunboats right off the coast. He was looking for something to shoot. He had other ships in his tactical control more than appropriate for the situation, something which has been pointed out by multiple commanders.

This story is tragically heartbreaking. Initially I was empathizing with the difficult choice the captain faced. However, the commercial airliner was ascending, not descending. And as it turns out the US Navy ship was in Iranian waters and the flight was in an international airway. It’s no wonder the people seem to hate us around the world, these guys ended up getting a medal, while hundreds of innocent people died. I am disgusted, we need to completely change our foreign policy around the world. Utilize our own energy resources here at home, have a strong powerful military here, but no more undeclared wars around the world. It does far more harm than good
If you want influence in the world you need to first demonstrate power. The US gets involved with so many international issues because if it didn't, countries like China or Russia would dominate and undermine the US influence in the world. Just look at China, economically enslaving countries so they can gain control and influence over them Russia testing NATO currently while it prepares to take back Ukraine, its all power plays As crappy as some decisions by America has been, the reality is other countries will just overstep unless reality checked.
@@Jockuptown I disagree, I feel our presence all over the world does more harm than good. We should not be policing the world, especially when we are currently in a $7 trillion budget deficit
@@Jockuptown you are not demonstrating power. I agree that capitalism is better than communism but the way the US is trying to force this ideology on other countries is a farce. For example if you choose to overthrow a dictator, (Hussein) who you funded the prior 15 years so he could have a war against a contradicting ideology (Iran) , you can't just turn away and leave the country to itself. That's no responsibility at all...
And the worst is the cover-up. I understand human error and tragic mistakes. But I cannot understand not owning up to it. Blaming the Iranians and then rewarding the officers involved made it worse. And they clearly made many mistakes, going into Iranian waters and getting themselves in the path of the airliner. Reading descending when it was clearly ascending, etc, etc.
@@Matt-dd3cw The US doesn't have to police the world and if it doesnt it will simply lose its super power status and likely push on completely fine for some time. Yes, he should have been punished, but the system was poorly designed to show ascending and declining altitudes of aircraft. If you are going to build a computer interface where the utmost importance is the altitude and delta (change of) altitude in aircraft, the Navy built their interface to obfuscate both in the 80s, making such errors all but easy to make. in fact, the flawed system they used to identify aircraft and the flaws in their computer interfaces, it is a wonder that the US Navy didn't shoot down other civilian aircraft on a yearly basis.

when you’re looking at a military radar display, tracking an incoming plane it’s not that difficult to make such a mistake especially in the heat of battle while your ship is already being attacked by Iranian gunships. I was A HAWK missile operator from 94 to 00 and I don’t recall in procedures where we would recheck a report of descending altitude The Iranians knew they were conducting military operations in the area they should’ve kept all of their civilian traffic clear of the fighting. The Iranians have a very bad track record of such things. in case you forgot or did not hear they The Iranian shot down a civilian airliner that is just taking off from their own airport Last year. Killing some 200 civilians. So apparently the Iranians have not updated their procedures for their military rules of engagement
My biggest question here is that did not a single person on board with access to the sky have binoculars? Commercial jets are EASILY visually distinguishable from any military fighter due to their swept wing design. Did nobody even TRY!? Like at that distance, the plane is within visual distance at 10 miles.
10 miles dude you every heard of something called poor visibility conditions like in most conditions the sky is not clear to the point where they can legid see ten miles away in fact that is a rare conditon also you think that is ww2 where peopleare using binoculars look legid you spent the time to find it take it and finally take so much damn time to find the plane and finally determine whether it is a commercial plane or not seriously this is a actual combat situation not a training also if the crew really did try you do realise that it is very unclear at that distance that what the crew might see is a piece of dot how are there suppose to see the wing design at that situation
Inexcusable. The fact that a F-14 fighter flies over 1400km/h(880mph) while the Airbus A300 was flying at 655km/h(330mph), should be quite the obvious indicator. 33 years later and no justice and mostly forgotten

The com air didnt have that radio because they are designed as a commercial plane, even Airbus don’t have that radio, the us navy investigating team also said and admitted it. I believe this attack was unintentional, and I'm glad the US government finally compensated the families of the victims. But awarding them afterwards with medals is just even more crazy
It is extremely disturbing to see that this whole "critical threatening situation" was completely made up in their own, tunnel vision, military minds, including decision data such as "aircraft descending" information. The equipment may have been state of the art but the personnel interpreting it imagined a threat that wasn't there. They said they warned the aircraft several times when they didn't even transmit the warnings in the proper frequency, they didn't even think that there could be the possibility that the civilian crew never heard them and simply "checked the box" of appropriate warnings performed. They not only got away with murder, they got a pat on their backs. Very repulsive.
you hit it exactly when you said military minds. that's the main problem. Any other captain of 'said thing', had he been responsible, would have felt guilty, changed his name, and moved far away to live a quiet life. these guys rationalize friendly fire as part of the job
You did watch the video right? Where they warned the aircraft to the best of their ability and didn't get a response? It's easy to Monday morning quarterback until your body is in the firing line and in a full on battle. That crew did their jobs and it's Iran to blame for creating this situation. Focus the blame where it belongs.
I hope that enough changes were made from this loss that something like this can’t happen again. There needs to be some kind of way to ensure this kind of thing doesn’t happen.
@@hassanrehman230 Not really, unless they manage to attack maybe multiple high priority Chinese civilian aircraft in "Chinese" airspace, which could spark a war in the South China sea, and the initial ship that engages might be too close to escape and gets sunk by retaliation. Ultimately Chinese navy can easily be defeated after sustaining a couple thousand casualties, but then at least the initial engagement would probably see the individuals who fired the first shot lose their lives.
Iran shot down a Canadian Ukrainian airplane with 174 civilians on board and they weren't even doing anything wrong unlike this plane which flew near a US ship. The Iranian government said at first they did it in defense cause they thought it was an enemy, they then changed it all up and said they "unintentionally" killed 174 people
Nothing would have happened. Invading Iran is nearly impossible. The country is littered with mountains, even more so than Afghanistan. Maybe some airstrikes, but nothing more. Not our fault Iran doesn't have the same capabilities as us.
In a nutshell, you are telling me the US Navy failed to identify the difference between ascending and descending, ignored that the aircraft was squaking 6760, and gave most of the distress calls on the wrong frequency. When they gave the calls on the right frequency, they were incorrect. So, even after all of this, the crew received hero's welcome, and we're not accountable. They killed 200 inocent people. US Navy at its best....
Perhaps it's because the plane was from Iran. US relations with Iran have been less than stellar ever since the hostage crisis. I'm starting to think that if one can find an excuse to kill Persians they'd do it.

omg I remember this. This CLEARLY showed errors by members of the ship's crew. One didn't know how to operate his station properly to track the correct plane!?!?!? Another didn't know how to read the difference between a descending and ascending plane? Stress is no reason. This is their JOB and it is a job of life and death. There is no excuse. Anyone incapable of handling the stress should never have been allowed to pass psychological testing. And finally, the person didn't double check instruments and instead just trusted the word of one person. What the hell. HOW IS THAT ACCEPTABLE BY THE MILITARY!?
Unfortunately when you go through the recruiter, MEPS, basic, AIT/A-school, then to your duty station, nowhere in that path do they check your mental stability or do a psychological evaluation on you. I was in the Army and I’m not sure if the Navy ever did it the same way, but as long as you passed at a certain percentage of whatever they were training you on, they’d let you graduate. If you got too many no-go’s, you’d have to restart training. This ship probably got a bunch of pisswads that barely passed A-school and/or any subsequent training they were given which contributed to them messing up this badly. They probably also didn’t do any pre-deployment readiness drills either to make sure they were on the up and up. This is why on this day, all of them were acting like dumb butts. Unfortunately, they’re not admitting they made a mistake and given the fact that the Navy at that time incorrectly given them medals and wrongly cleared them of wrongdoing, these guys are too arrogant to admit that they screwed up. They probably know deep inside they did, but I think to cope with killing all of them people for no reason, they’re not going to accept it. That would’ve drove them crazy if they did.
If the Calley and his fellow perpetrators could get away with murder in My Lai then why should the shooting down of Iranian civilian airline not be acceptable to the US military
Officers often receive medals after major screwups--I suppose so they don't feel bad and have something shiny to put on their chest. ( Sometimes enlisted as well.)
To quote an often-used line from a similar series, Seconds from Disaster: "Disasters don't just happen. They're part of a chain of critical events." Given the VERY LIMITED information that can fit into a 50-minute documentary, I can understand how this happened AND am sad that it did. This reminds me a lot of the episode about Avianca 052. Both cases had serious defects in communication that contributed to tragedy. But unlike in the Avianca case, most of the communication issues in this situation seem to have happened on the ground (well, water): -- the badly designed interface that led the officer to hook the wrong plane -- the unclear timetable of commercial flights -- the limited ability of the Vincennes to communicate with civilian aircraft, which strikes me as odd because it seems like the ship could reasonably expect to need to communicate with civilian pilots at some point -- the disproportionately small number of attempts to use the one civilian frequency that the Vincennes *could* access -- the misleading speeds cited in the warning messages -- the omission of any requirement for the communications officers to use the unique code in communications -- the total reliance on people's reports without double-checking on the available displays -- and most of all, the report that the plane was descending instead of ascending
I don’t buy the “unclear timetable of commercial flights”. I’m just a plain civilian with some curiosity about aviation and even I know clearly departure times are given in local time of the airport where the plane is departing. No matter where in the world you are, the system will show local time AT THE AIRPORT, not where you are located.
I agree.. I don’t care what anyone says at the end of the day. This was an accident… America gained nothing from doing this on purpose and let’s be real after seeing Israel now the US does have morals. If there was any ill intent, they would’ve destroyed all those gunboats happily, but like you said, it was literally a chain of events like everything in life. Tragic there are 1 million things that happen to bring you to that moment. Gods will.
We often point the fingers at other countries for not taking accountability for their actions but unfortunately we are no better. Hypocrisy runs everywhere.
@@bf1769 So that is the justification from you for taking down the lives of 290 innocent people. Actually, the US admitted that a US Navy ship did shoot down the plane. Since the Iranian aircraft was operating in violation of international law, they invited the risk.

Well they are not respected and instead of bringing honor to the men who received them, they serve as a visual reminder of the dishonor those men displayed and what a disgrace the US Government can be at times.
My condolences to the people who lost their lives on that tragic day. As an American I felt ashamed and disgusted for shooting down that plane due to the incompetent individual. The captain and his crew deserves jail time not a medal and this is a good example of abusing their power. I’m for humanity and not for nationality.

Well to be fair the captain is always responsible in these kind of situations. The blame should be on the captain and his neglection to double check the information.
Commercial airliners can fly transsonic. So can military aircraft. Do you know how fast airplanes fly? And nobody uses battleships anymore anyways. And if they did it wouldn't be that ships responsibility to engage air targets unless nobody else could.
No nerve it was self defense the ship Gabe adequate warnings to divert away. It was the towers fault to not give them the radio frequency. Sailors have died because they didn't act
Am the only one who noticed the fact this plane cannot be an F-14 just because of how slow it is. The A300 was probably at 300knots or something way far from what an F-14 would be travelling at when approaching.
The other captain, McKenna, saying "it was required, it was required" over and over again, using the word "required" paints a very clear picture how he was thinking.
Truly heartbreaking and tragic for the innocent passengers and crew of Iran Air Flight 655. What’s more upsetting with this documentary is they only cover like 10 minutes or less of the innocent lives lost. Most airplane crash documentaries covers families of passengers, attendants, crew to feel more sympathetic but this documentary mostly covers the ones that killed the crew and passengers. The documentary seems to justify the US military’s actions by showing mostly their side of what happened and we only know about the 1 pilot of Iran Air and his brother’s account of what happened is truly upsetting. In 1990, Captain Rogers was awarded the Legion of Merit decoration "for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding service as commanding officer" ... from April 1987 to May 1989." The award was given for his service as the Commanding Officer of Vincennes. Which was when he shot down the Air Iran 665. He got a medal. After shooting down a civilian plane, killing innocents. He should have never gotten a medal with that on his record.

Imagine what the reaction would've been like if it had been a western airplane (i.e. EU, britain, etc.) but it was just middle eastern people so it's okay...
No one said it was okay.... People smarter than I attempted to fix the true problem which was that the US ship was out of international waters and left its region of duty. The navy and US government reparations were paid to the victims families following their case to the us court system. Better military fact checking resulted from having a radio officer lie and having information confirmed. May it never happen again.

I don't understand how people immediately assume either racism or purposeful killing. @@theotherdave8013 there is another video that continues this. It was BLATANTLY obvious to the other American ships in the area that it was a commercial jet. Fighter planes don't climb with slow stepped acents and scheduled turns. All commercial jets fly a mini route (captain's flight plan) until they get to their cruise altitude and speed. A Fighter doesn't have a flight plan, just a target. It's why they hid the charts in the final report. You could clearly see the plane was following markers. They just weren't thinking plain and simple.
Watching almost midnight, can't sleep, here's my thoughts, They said the accident was NOT caused by negligence of the Naval Ship personnel, so are we not counting the guy who misread the aircraft's altitude? And I would like to point out how bad the "aircraft calling" procedure is, using groundspeed instead of airspeed and not calling the squawk code. Also I don't like how the ship captain is not confirming the squawk code to the guy who said "possible commercial aircraft".
Supposedly, the argument was medical; That stress and inexperience led to error in a dire situation. At least that was asserted by this video and by the US Government in 2000, calling it 'Scenario Fulfillment'. Basically, that they were confused and under pressure, which caused them to misinterpret data in a way that they preconceived it. Either way, it's a grave error, and one that should not have gone without response, in my personal opinion. All reports indicate that otherwise the flight was moving in a typical pattern and ascending, which would have likely alleviated all concerns of a threat.
@@44bett The crew received a combat ribbon for their service in live combat that the USS Vincennes had engaged in, throughout their deployment. The air warfare coordinator received a commendation medal for his four year service period. The Captain received a Legion of Merit for his two years as captain of the ship, from 1987 to 1989 (this incident happened in 1988). None of the crew received medals or awards for this incident. They were awarded despite it for other reasons, and largely for other periods of service. The only one that can be really questioned is the Captain's Legion of Merit, which definitely should have at least cited the incident in its consideration. I do agree that more scrutiny should have been applied as this is a serious error that cost innocent lives and ultimately falls against him and upon his shoulders.
@Annette Johnson That's a valid opinion. I should assert again, however, that the awards were largely not related to this incident at all aside from coincidence on the broader part of the crew. They were awarded in 1990 (two years later), and not all of the crew was involved in this incident. The Captain's is the one that sticks out the most and I agree that it should certainly have been considered against awarding him.
I think they should’ve also investigated the impact of the film crew in the ship. It seems unusual to me that they face their first threat exactly when there’s an audience there to show off to. It’s also unbelievable that they expected the pilots to even be listening to their transmission whilst they’re right at the beginning of a flight, they were still climbing and you expect them to check if there’s any threats in their own waters? That welcome party was horrendous to watch and it made me sick that they were awarded knowing what had happened.
It's a terrible mistake. But they were in the middle of a battle. You just never know. They didn't respond, couldn't respond. Their code came back as a general code. The crew on the warship sent out warnings...followed steps according to ROE. You can't judge them because you don't know what you would have done in that situation. It's tough....I hope they are all at peace.

Just look at China, economically enslaving countries so they can gain control and influence over them
Russia testing NATO currently while it prepares to take back Ukraine, its all power plays
As crappy as some decisions by America has been, the reality is other countries will just overstep unless reality checked.
@@Jockuptown I disagree, I feel our presence all over the world does more harm than good. The UN and NATO are incompetent and corrupt, that needs to be fixed so that they can do their job at a high level.
However other countries will take advantage of the US doing that, and may potentially wield a stronger empire than the US, so the battle may be brought to your front door step.

Personally, I don't think I could live with myself knowing I was responsible for the loss of 316 innocent lives, but the captain not only lived on, but also sat there finding justification for his actions and looking like what he did was right. The plane did not show any sign of being a threat and it was an Iranian plane flying through Iranian air space. US militarry ships should not have been there in the first place. What a horrible turn of events. The captain should have been suspended at the very least, but instead he got a medal and for what?

Hello 😊👋
hi there. Do not hate your country, never hate your country, because these crimes were not committed with the approval of your entire country, but only a small group of Americans who consider themselves superior to the American people and give themselves the right to replace the American people . They should be blamed for deciding and acting, these are the governments that make their country's name more popular or hated. It is these governments that have provoked the feelings of their nation by spreading bad propaganda against an independent country and nation, and they spread so much false propaganda against another nation and country that even for the futile and unjustifiable war with Iraq, many young Americans volunteer for it. Dealing with a country that, according to (wrongly) American statesmen, has made nuclear and chemical bombs and is loading its missile warheads to attack Israel and then its bases and even our country with its ballistic missiles, then the movie Innocent Children It shows Americans playing and laughing, and then it does a Hollywood scene, which means that it happened after Iraq's atomic and chemical attack on America, and all those innocent children fell on the ground and died, then they say: You were ready for fight to prevent such a disaster and defend your country?! (That this brainwashing causes many American youths who enter into an unjust and false war with only the thought of patriotism and defending their country, many are killed, many are paralyzed or amputated for the rest of their lives, and many die from diseases. They get nervous, not because of the defense of their country, but only because of the bellicose policies of the statesmen, which fill the pockets of the owners of American, western and eastern arms factories and companies). I do not say that the government of my country fully respects human rights and I do not make such a claim, and if anyone from my country makes such a claim, you know, it is nothing more than a lie, but American statesmen, who are always eager to defend human rights in the world, if this is really the case, they should at least The work of Saddam Tikrit, Iraq, was condemned in the chemical bombing of the cities of Sardasht and Baneh in Iran (in June 28, 1987 ), when (saddam, that great criminal of the world) used chemical and nerve bombs that made by France, Germany, and sometimes it was said that he bought nerve bombs from the Soviet Union and the United States, caused thousands of innocent children to suffocate into the arms of their mothers, that mothers who didn't know what happened, why they were breathing like this, they didn't know whether to save their innocent child or save themselves, that's why the people did saw in the streets ,and alleys, mothers wrapped on theirselves to m aybe did save children of theirselves then had fallen on the ground and were killed, that people saw that an innocent child or infant had died of suffocation in the arms of each of that mothers, why America, the defender of human rights! He did not condemn Saddam Tikriti's actions even in language and never even said a word about those great crimes?!

"Disasters don't just happen. They're part of a chain of critical events."
Given the VERY LIMITED information that can fit into a 50-minute documentary, I can understand how this happened AND am sad that it did.
This reminds me a lot of the episode about Avianca 052. Both cases had serious defects in communication that contributed to tragedy. But unlike in the Avianca case, most of the communication issues in this situation seem to have happened on the ground (well, water):
-- the badly designed interface that led the officer to hook the wrong plane
-- the unclear timetable of commercial flights
-- the limited ability of the Vincennes to communicate with civilian aircraft, which strikes me as odd because it seems like the ship could reasonably expect to need to communicate with civilian pilots at some point
-- the disproportionately small number of attempts to use the one civilian frequency that the Vincennes *could* access
-- the misleading speeds cited in the warning messages
-- the omission of any requirement for the communications officers to use the unique code in communications
-- the total reliance on people's reports without double-checking on the available displays
-- and most of all, the report that the plane was descending instead of ascending

YOU ARE SO RIGHT THAT THE RADAR MAN MISREAD THE PASSENGER PLANE ALTITUDE SO THATS OK? NOT NEGLIGENCE? YOU MAKE ME SICK NAVY.
"The burden is heavy" yea, heavy enough for him to accept the Legion of Merit and then try to profit off the tragedy with a book
@@MetaMortis21 Yeah but that ship shouldnt have even been that far into iranian waters. If an iranian ship came that close to the US coast what would you think?
@@MetaMortis21 F14 was an air to air fighter and had no threat to a ground or see target. US knew it well. It was totally a mess and chain of events and mistakes. I hope it never happens again.
@@scorpion1349 Except that your wrong. The F-14 can carry a guided bomb pay load and rocket pods, and can absolutely engage ground targets with strafing as well. If it was an F-14 sortied to attack the ship, the ship would have been lost if it hadn’t defended itself.
Granted I wish this accident never happened, but an F-14 is a threat to any target.
@@Chroniclerope I've red that many years later, the US modified F14s to carry air to ground missiles. However in 80s Iranian airforce had only maverick and Phoenix air to air missiles for their F14s. Apparently a decade ago Iranians started to modify the remaining F14s to be able to attack ground targets. But not during 80s.
Here is something to be revealed. A relative of mine, a long time employee of the CIA, retired as a deputy director, was in the embassy in Tehran in 1979. 3 days before the embassy was taken over, he was told to leave, and given an airline ticket out....Therefore, the CIA is the one who arranged for the embassy to be taken over, to get Carter out of office. Remember when Reagan was being sworn in, and on tv was a split screen of that event, and the other side was the hostages coming home....funny coincidence,,,,In addition, a friend of mine, a former green beret, now deceased, was on the detail to rescue the hostages, but the CIA SABOTAGED the rescue. These are true facts, Americans need to be EDUCATED. My life has been repeatedly threatened over my leaking info, but I dont care anymore, at the end of the US.....
