Another fine honest reaction to another grand Rush song Jone. I just love Rush intro’s, don’t you? I think the “Camera Eye” refers to strangers seeing the city in a different light to the locals who live and work there every day just taking everything for granted. People tend to really look at things more intently through a camera lens, for instance tourists, whereas the locals are more in tune with the surroundings. I know Neil spent some time in London trying to “make it” before joining Rush so maybe his experience there sparked this song. I think he really captures the essences of both Cities with his lyrics and (I think) as usual the music magically compliments the words.
the camera eye title was Neil visiting new york and then london, taking pictures the whole time. so the camera was capturing a time in life. at least i think that’s it.
This was another dangerous song for me and driving... :) When I first heard this song I thought it was yet another great example of all three blending so well, Alex's tone on the guitar, Geddy's voice and bass playing and of course Neil on the drums. The Camera Eye is a response to a book that Neil was reading.
Side A of Moving Pictures is iconic, (Tom Sawyer, Red Barchetta, YYZ, and Limelight), but Side B is more interesting in my opinion. The Camera Eye is them starting to experiment with synths more, Witch Hunt has some of Neil’s best lyrics ever and Vital Signs showed us what was coming with Signals.
Picking a star of a Rush song seems unfair to the other two, but Geddy's bass wins this one. What a sound. There's a deeper meaning to the lyrics, there usually is with Neil. I think ChicTumshy summed it up pretty well.
Loved your reaction always genuine and always appreciative of their talent. Only Rush could do an 11 minute song about city streets and make it sound so good and be so interesting and conjuring up such strong images in your mind. I have been to both places NYC only in last 12 years many years after I first listened to this song but yes it so captures that energy.
just a critique. the volume of the song needs to be a little louder. i can hear you fine but the music seems a little low. or maybe i’m old and deaf. 😂
I've always loved this song but its not perfect they are too stuck on that bitonal chordal motif that goes nowhere. It makes the song feel more stagnant than it should, but I suppose they must have felt that was fitting for the subject matter somehow. The big cities: a lot of motion commotion and seeming energy, but just going around in circles. I wonder if they were inspired by Philip Glass for this one, same kind of cyclic chordal movements without any real progression

The first half of the song is a picture of New York City, the second half a picture of London. The song is the camera eye displaying the pictures.

Alex's solo with his almost trademark pinch harmonics, something he learned from Rory Gallagher.

No, you're not deaf...he needs to do what he needs to do.

Driven.
Niel Peart, drummer, lyricist, spent his early years trying to make it in London.
@Jone Ruiz...you need to increase output volumn on music and decrease your voice volumn...c'mon man.
Yes please. Music on the video is diminished to the point that the listener cannot hear the musical "details" :) Great reactions man, many thanks!
