    What is not communicated here is that RUSH sounded just as clean and on point live as they did in the studio. 3 Masters in perfect balance.

      Same. Never seem to get over it. That song is the reason I'm a Rush fan, and it's still my favorite song of theirs.
      Among all the great stuff in this song, Neil has some of his most bonkers chaotic fills during the second verse.

      Vital signs was the first Rush song I ever heard and was my favorite Rush song for a long while. At first, I did not know the name of the song. So, I bought the Signals tape because I thought that song must be on it. "Signals get crossed." But it was not. Signals ended up being one of my favorite albums ever. BTW this was all before the internet so I could not just look up Rush reactions on UA-cam or something.

    I love to be the first to comment on this. Great reaction. BTW, even though it has been largely overlooked, the lyrics in "Witch Hunt" are among some of the most timeless of Neil Peart's poetry with special relevance today in our turbulent times. "Quick to judge/Quick to anger/Slow to understand;/Ignorance, and prejudice, and fear/Walk hand in hand." So true.

      I agree the lyrics to witch hunt are very poignant today... but so are his lyrics on 2112.. "bleeding hearts and begging hands will only cry out for more""

      @@markferrett700 It seems clear to me that Neil matured and moved past the Ayn Rand crap. In one of his last interviews he described himself as a ‘Bleeding Heart Libertarian’. So pretty sure his opinion of bleeding hearts changed.

    • @markferrett700
      @markferrett700 Рік тому

      @@robertlester425 I get that. Not so sure the Ayn Rand stuff is crap though,she was an astute visionary who foretold the dangers of communism AND dictatorships. Its a shame right wing groups align themselves to her because she was anything but a fascist. My point was Neil was an unbalanced character in many ways. For example he couldn't really deal with public adoration or interviewers yet wrote songs with what can only be described as having "messages" or points of view to the very masses he tried to avoid. If that's not unbalanced then what is !? Bottom line is he was an amazing poet and musician . We all think we knew him or his personality . I think we would be shocked if we really knew.

    • @robertlester425
      @robertlester425 Рік тому +1

      @@markferrett700 Good point. No argument on Neil being an amazing poet and musician. Also good point on the fact that we all probably tend to think we know much more about him than we actually do. My opinion of Ayn Rand is just that- my own. I actually began reading her work BECAUSE of Rush back in the late 70s. And for a long time held her in high regard. She was very appealing to my conservative teen sensibilities. But with life experience and hopefully some wisdom, I now find her Objectivist philosophy to be a hollow, one-dimensional view of the world. I assumed Neil likely went through a similar transformation on that subject- but how should I know?

And on another note they were really coming into their own as a Rangers and songwriters in this album and it's just amazing how three guys can come up with a song like Witch Hunt with all the layers and all the sounds and a song that's really all over the chart, they somehow pave away straight through it and keep it interesting through the whole song. Never be another band like Rush

    19 studio albums to their name, and i still get asked to name my favourite Rush song. I managed to compile a top ten of the band's catalogue in no particular order, but couldn't nail that number one Rush song of all time. Up until now that is! "The Camera Eye" isn't just the perfect Rush song, it's the perfect song full stop. Bass, lead, percussion, and vocals have never coalesced so perfectly to my ears, and easily equal anything the big prog guys have put out. 'Im not declaring that Rush are better than Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, ad infinitum, just that this composition can hold its own with anything in the rock Canon. A scintillating work of art for sure!

    Side two of this album is an underrated gem. It's got its work cut out for it because side one is start to finish 4 staples of Classic Rock Radio. With the weirdness being that none of those songs are really classic rock in its traditional form.. they sneak in an awful lot of progressive elements under the noses of some pop hooks to make the medicine go down a little smoother. Anyway.. side to this album has some great great songs but it's overshadowed by just how legendary side one is. It's great to hear you taking the plunge here. Cheers. M.

    Many say that Rush peaked at this point or with this album. There’s no denying it was their most popular, commercially successful album yet I truly believe several releases post Moving Pictures are equal to if not exceeding in respect to songwriting, musicianship, and production/presentation. None of those sold as well OR are as well known/recognized by casual to super fans, but with each successive release, there was always growth and improvement in areas that were achieved on previous releases. Originally Tom Sawyer and Limelight were my Top 2 but for the last 10 years or more Vital Signs and Witch Hunt have flip flopped back and forth as my top 2
