Side note: Henry Hill published a cookbook called The Wiseguy Cookbook, and the recipes are pretty good actually. It also contains anecdotes from his life.
There is a comedy movie called My Blue Heaven which released in 1990 and was written by Nora Ephron. She was the wife of Nicholas Pileggi who wrote novels and screenplays including Goodfellas. Nora based My Blue Heaven on Henry Hill’s life in witness protection. It stars Rick Moranis, Steve Martin, and Joan Cusack. It’s a pretty funny movie and interesting to know it’s based on Henry Hill.
Oh wow very interesting I did not know that. I catched a few scenes of this movie on TV a couple of times but never paid it much attention. I'm gonna watch it now. lol
@@johnnyskinwalker4095 its hard to take seriously because its sorta The Jerk meets the Mob haha .. none the less its still a good movie and worth a watch
My Blue Heaven is my headcanon sequel to Goodfellas lol "It don't say 'Polly wanna cracker'." "What do it say?" "Yoh undah arrest." "...I once knew a guy hadda parrot said that!"
Joe Pesci won the best actor Oscar for this role. You should watch the TV show "THE SOPRANOS" which is one of the greatest TV dramas ever made. It is set in contemporary time (late 90's early 2000's) about a stressed out Mafia Boss who has to see a psychiatrist. The psychiatrist is played by Lorraine Bracco who plays Henry's wife Karen in Goodfellas - in fact, there are quite a few Goodfellas actors that appear in THE SOPRANOS
You gotta see. "Catch me if you can" Its with Tom Hanks and Leo DiCaprio its an FBI cop chase very fun you will love it. Also "The Departed" another Scorsese classic in the ultra crime drama category.
The most similar movie to this is Casino, it has a big portion of the Goodfellas cast in it and Scorsese directing. Joe Pesci is even more crazier then in Goodfellas.
The author of the book this movie is based on (based on the true story), his wife writes screenplays, and she did a goofy “sequel” to this movie called “My Blue Heaven” starring Steve Martin. It’s pretty funny lol
Isn't it interesting that Henry and Karen only separated *after* going into witness protection, and not during that whole stressful time period while they were living a crime life? But in a way, it makes complete sense. They're both addicted to the action and excitement. And that was the time when they actually needed each other to get through all the insanity of those years. But after that's all over-boring, average witness protection life in the suburbs? With nothing left but each other, there's also nothing around anymore to distract them from the fact they don't really love each other. They were just in love with the "life" really. Sometimes you can really bond with another person over a shared trauma, or some other unique experience, and to our brains, that *feels* to us like real "love" because it's so powerful.
"Casino", "The Departed", and "Once Upon a Time in America" are great movies for you to react to if you love crime films. I'm glad that you were amused. 🤡
Pretty sure the FBI agent who's talking to Henry and Karen about going into witness protection was the actual guy who busted Henry. I remember him from watching this the first time and he seemed to just stand out in that scene like it was so natural, and it was. The "don't give me the babe in the woods line" when Karen tries to act like she had nothing to do with anything is so good.
What the movie doesn't mention is that Henry had two of his mistresses sitting outside that office, negotiating for ALL OF THEM to go into protective custody.
This is one of my favorite movies of all time. You asked for suggestions so: Scarface (Al Pacino's) Donnie Brasco (Al Pacino & Johnny Depp. Based on a true story) And I know I'm not on only one who would like to see you react to the television series The Sopranos. Congrats on the impending marriage!
In the DVD commentary, Henry Hill was asked what his reaction was when he heard Tommy had been whacked - "relieved" was what he said. Everyone was always worried about Tommy and of doing something to set him off; he was a real sociopath. About the only guy he probably would never have killed was Jimmy.
Real Tommy desimone was also 6 feet 2 and built like an ox. And he was so crazy he would randomly shoot down people on the street just to try a new gun
The gangster Tommy was based on, Tommy DeSimone, was a complete inhuman monster. I can't remember if it was in the movie (I haven't seen it in 15 years) but once Hill, DeSimone, and Jimmy Burke (the gangster Jimmy was based on) were walking down the street having a conversation. Out of nowhere Tommy said he was going to kill the next person he saw coming the other way, and then went on with the conversation. A little later some young guy rounded the corner walking toward them, and without batting an eyelash Tommy pulled out his gun, shot the guy in the face, and continued with the conversation without missing a beat.
Yeah, Tommy didn't make it to 30. I'm surprised he made it to 28 with the crazy shit he was known for. Sure, you can get away with a lot when you're connected like he was, but there's a limit. I suspect that the big guys would have had Tommy taken out even if he hadn't killed Billy Batts, since his out of control antics could draw a lot of unwanted attention, and it was no longer the era when the crime families had quite so much influence. Tommy seems the type to end up creating more trouble than he was worth, one way or another.
Henry broke the rules of the witness protection program, he got involved again with drug dealing, then went to prison in general population with other mafia members. His life was on the line but Micheal Franzesy a Colombo captain, saw him and told a guard, so he was put in a protection wing. When he got out he turned into an alcoholic and worked in a kitchen, wrote a cook book and died a few years ago. The other two Jimmy and Paul, died in prison a long time ago.
I think you'd enjoy the book the movie was adapted from 'Wiseguy.' The author collaborated closely with Henry Hill on it, and the movie is a pretty faithful adaptation of events. There were some changes, but overall pretty close.
Donnie Brasco is another mob film that is based on a true story and it is about a undercover police who infiltrated the mafia. That is also a movie that is a must see.
I love that during the scene where Karen said that she's turned out by Henry's violent tendencies your cat just looked at you like he/she's very confused, very fitting to the dynamic of the scene. Lol.
I read a lot about Henry Hill. I found it funny in the move he had two daughters. When in fact he had one daughter Gina, and two sons, Gregg and Justin Hill. Justin was from his other relationship to Lisa Caserta, from 2006 till Henry's death in 2012. He was married with Karen Hill from 1965 to 1989. But their divorce wasn't finalized until 2002. He then married his second wife Kelly Alor from 1990 to 1996 He ran with the Lucchese crime family of New York City from 1955 until 1980. After he was arrested on narcotics charges is when he became an FBI informant. Henry and his family went into the witness protection program, until he got busted for cocaine trafficking in a federal court in Seattle and expelled from the witness protection program. Henry died at the age of 69, from heart failure, June 12, 2012 . Karen is still alive at the age of 76 and continues to use an alias as do her two children. Gregg and Gina. They released a book in 2004, titled On the Run: A Mafia Childhood. There's much more but I'll leave that up to you to look the rest of it up". Thanx for your reaction, take care..xx
One detail I just realized. When Karen asks Henry "what do you do?" in the club, after being impressed by all his connections and influence, he replies "what?" and leans in like he couldn't hear her over the noise. He heard the question, I'm sure, but on instinct, Henry pretends he didn't, just to buy a couple seconds to come up with a convincing lie. It's so smooth that I never even noticed little things like that before.
This is a top 5 favorite movie of mine. I love it so freaking much. Scorsese is an absolute master at showing how this life can be so intoxicating but also why that is such an illusion. "The Godfather" movies are essentially American Shakespeare, but "Goodfellas" is probably the more accurate, street-level view of what that life actually is.
I think Goodfellas is my favorite Martin Scorcese movie. Definitely one of my favorite gangster movies of all time. A Bronx Tale is also super awesome. A little different from Goodfellas story wise. I've heard that a few things in this movie were a little exaggerated. For example the prison scene where they're practically living in the own little apartment within the prison eating pasta, steak, lobsters, and wine. I think "wiseguys" had it easier in prison than most people but from what I've heard not that easy. Joe Pesci definitely steals the spotlight in this movie. He's definitely a guy you would fear despite of his size. Please watch more Mafia movies Mary.

I'd highly suggest "A Bronx Tale" , a story told by a kid with 2 mentors: his own hard-working father played by Deniro, and local mafia capo Sonny, played sensationally by Chazz Palmeteri
'Goodfellas' is based on "Wiseguy", a non-fiction book by Nicholas Pileggi who did a lot of research including interviews with Henry Hill. (Pileggi also co-wrote the screenplay for the film.) Pileggi's wife was screenwriter/director Nora Ephron known for writing movies like "When Harry Met Sally" and "Sleepless in Seattle". Ephron also wrote the comedy film "My Blue Heaven" starring Steve Martin as a gangster living in the suburbs as part of the witness protection program. She based the story on some of the same research and notes that Pileggi used for "Wiseguy" and 'Goodfellas". So....in a way, 'My Blue Heaven' could be seen as a sequel to 'Goodfellas' showing the life Henry Hill lived after he entered witness protection. Trailer: ua-cam.com/video/zuvLo2FB85U/v-deo.html
Henry Hill use to go on the Howard stern radio show in NYC pretty often, guys would call into the show threatening him, he would laugh, most of the mob guys were dead or in jail by then, he had left witness protection and moved around freely
The Lufthansa heist was a robbery at New York City's John F. Kennedy International Airport on December 11, 1978. An estimated $5.875 million (equivalent to $23.3 million in 2020) was stolen, with $5 million in cash and $875,000 in jewelry, making it the largest cash robbery committed on American soil at the time.[1] Jimmy Burke, a Lucchese crime family associate, was reputed to be the mastermind of the robbery, but he was never officially charged in connection with the crime. Burke is also alleged to have either committed or ordered the murders of many of those involved in the months following the robbery to avoid being implicated in the heist.[2] The only person convicted in the robbery was Louis Werner, an airport worker who helped plan the heist.[2] The money and jewelry were never recovered. The heist's magnitude made it one of the longest-investigated crimes in the United States; the latest arrest associated with the robbery was made in 2014, which resulted in acquittal.
This is one of the 10 best movies of the 90s. Scorsese's 'Casino' is also a very good mob epic, and has a lot of the same cast including DeNiro and Pesci.
This is one of my favorite movies of all time. It feels so familiar and realistic to what I went through in the past. Not saying I was in the mafia or anything, just drug dealing and robbery with a group of my childhood friends. Things spiral out of control fast and bad things happen. I ended up throwing away my phone and moving to a different city because things were getting dangerous. What's funny is that it all started by my friend asking me to drive him somewhere and it turned out to be a robbery of a drug dealer - which turned into a year long drug dealer robbery spree. It was strangely addictive.
Telling Tommy to get his shine box was an insult. I shine box was used to shine shoes. It was basically implying that Tommy wasn’t meant to be in the mafia and he needed to go back to shining shoes. Back to being poor.
The scene where Henry and Karen go into the nightclub through the kitchen, is one of the most famous uses of a Steadicam - the entire thing from entering the stairs to sitting down at their table is one long amazing shot.
I recently saw "A Beautiful Mind" and went to your channel to see your reaction to this. It took a time and about the times scrolling through all your videos until I grasped, that you didn't react to it, yet. If you haven't seen this already, it is a must see for you, I would say. It's a drama quite similar to good will hunting, and I'm sure you'll love it.
26:25 Sadly, I don't really have to imagine it. I just recently moved out of an apartment where our upstairs neighbors were an older couple that were definitely at least alcoholics, if not possibly drug addicts. We'd hear them fight and yell constantly with loud thumps against the floor as if heavy objects were dropped or thrown. It was fucking hell, and I'm so glad I don't live there anymore. It used to really scare my girlfriend and our dog.
Most traditionally run mob organizations hate drug dealers or any drug trafficking because they pride themselves on loyalty and discretion. They find that those types of people rat each other out easier because drug charges in large carry longer sentences than the petty stuff (at least before the rico act) so anyone found doing or distributing drugs was considered a huge liability to the organization.
In a completely different vein but still crime stories are two of my favorite old, old British movies from the 1950’s, both starring Alec Guinness. “The Lavender Hill Mob” and “The Lady Killers” about complicated, technical robberies gone awry. Very funny tales of crime.
I used to work as an office assistant on films. One of the films I worked on was with Paul Sorvino. He only came into the office once, but wow, when someone like that walks into a room, you feel his presence!
It was cute that you didn't notice young Henry's trial was rigged, while wondering how tough it must be for the judge. I wasn't tough you open an envelope full of money and swing the gavel down.
You should check out 'Cop Land' from 1997. Both Ray Liotta and De Niro reunite but with both much smaller parts. Stallone is the main star in it and IMO it's his 3rd best character out of his entire filmography. Rocky and Rambo being the other two.
I read the book "Wiseguy" that the movie is based on. The movie is pretty accurate. Once in go into witness protection it is for life. You can't get out.
What's crazy is if you look up many of the big crimes (news articles) that happened in the film you can get a really interesting look into that time period from another angle.
I know everyone is talking about movies, but my first thought was that your eyes were feeling better! I'm glad!!! I got used to your adorable glasses, but I'm still glad you're eyes are doing well.
Enjoyed this reaction! You can find some clips of the real Henry Hill on The Howard Stern Show. There are quite a few here on YT. And yeah, Pesci makes a GREAT bad guy.
Yes Mary, this movie, 'Goodfellas' is actually based on a true events. Henry Hill passed away on June 12, 2012, complications of heart disease at a Los Angeles hospital in Los Angeles, California one day after his 69th birthday. Please do a reaction (if you haven't yet) on 'The Godfather' (1972) and 'The Godfather Part II (1974). And also 'Scarface' (1983) with Al Pacino. All three films are classic crime movies. Good reaction Mary!
I once got a free dinner from the real Henry Hill when he opened up a restaurant later in life. Not long after that it closed down when there was a fire there. Hmm.
If you want to know more you should read the book this movie is based off of "Wiseguy". It goes into a LOT more detail. Also there's a youtube channel by a guy named Michael Franzese. He's a reformed mobster who knew all those guys and told some stories about them. He says Tommy was WAY crazier than the movie portrays.
Casino, The Departed and Black Mass (Departed has a character based on Whitey Bulger from Boston, played by Jack Nicholson, who was an Irish American gangster, Black Mass is actually about his gang), Johnny Depp plays Whitey Bulger and disappears into the role. All great gangster type movies. American Gangster is another excellent one, Denzel Washington as Frank Lucas, an African American gangster.
If you want to learn more about the aftermath in witness protection, I'd recommend the book On The Run: A Mafia Childhood by Gregg and Gina Hill (Henry and Karen's kids).
Henry outlived every single one of those in that gang. He outlived them to the point that hose who took over from them cancelled the hit on Henry since he was of no bother to them
The character Fat Andy in this movie was actually a corrupt NYPD detective for this very crime family who killed for the underboss. After all this went down in the movie the Lucchesse crime family went into meltdown.
The little girls with Lorraine Bracco playing her and Henry's daughters when she visited him in prison, were Lorraine Bracco's real daughters. One of them is Stella Keitel: her father is the actor Harvey Keitel.
You might enjoy watching the original Manchurian candidate. It is a psychological thriller. Angela Lansbury gives an Oscar worthy performance especially toward the end of the movie.
When you're done with the newer crime movies, there were some great crime movies made back in the day. They've been making good ones almost since the silent movie days.
Here's 10 great movies you could watch and react to: Basic Instinct 1992, thriller, Michael Douglas and Sharon Stone Stand By Me 1986, drama based on Stephen King's novella A Fish Called Wanda 1988, crime comedy, John Cleese, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Palin, Kevin Kline Who Framed Roger Rabbit 1988, crime comedy, live-action/animated film Coming to America 1988, romance comedy, Eddie Murphy Spaceballs 1987, a Mel Brooks sci-fi comedy, parody of Star Wars, Star Trek and many other movies Young Frankenstein 1974, a Mel Brooks comedy, a black and white film Office Space 1999, comedy, Ron Livingston, Jennifer Aniston The Fugitive 1993, crime action thriller, Harrison Ford, Tommy Lee Jones Men in Black 1997, sci-fi action comedy, Tommy Lee Jones, Will Smith

Trailer: ua-cam.com/video/zuvLo2FB85U/v-deo.html
everytime Mary sniggles and makes the snort noise my dog always looks confused lmao great reactions as per
Now you have to watch Casino. It's basically the same movie with the same actors but in a different setting.
Goodfellas is a classic. Always enjoy it.
28:18 that prosecutor in the movie is played by the actual prosecutor who gave Henry witness protection
Tutti: "And that's, that".
26:26 One reason why we live out in the country instead of a town or city. I couldn't stand living by people, idk how people do it these days lol
Henry Hill use to go on the Howard stern radio show in NYC pretty often, guys would call into the show threatening him, he would laugh, most of the mob guys were dead or in jail by then, he had left witness protection and moved around freely
"Do not make the call from this house. We will be caught."
"Okay."....."calls"
The Lufthansa heist was a robbery at New York City's John F. Kennedy International Airport on December 11, 1978. An estimated $5.875 million (equivalent to $23.3 million in 2020) was stolen, with $5 million in cash and $875,000 in jewelry, making it the largest cash robbery committed on American soil at the time.[1] Jimmy Burke, a Lucchese crime family associate, was reputed to be the mastermind of the robbery, but he was never officially charged in connection with the crime. Burke is also alleged to have either committed or ordered the murders of many of those involved in the months following the robbery to avoid being implicated in the heist.[2] The only person convicted in the robbery was Louis Werner, an airport worker who helped plan the heist.[2]
The money and jewelry were never recovered.
Your cat is adorable at 10:11
The scene where Henry and Karen go into the nightclub through the kitchen, is one of the most famous uses of a Steadicam - the entire thing from entering the stairs to sitting down at their table is one long amazing shot.
Jimmy Burke (everyone but Henry had last names changed) died in prison in 1996. Henry died in 2012
Congrats on your wedding. He's a lucky man.
Mary just casually dropping the word she's getting married this year, just glossed over that. Congrats!
THE FAMILY (released in 2013) is a comedy crime drama starring Robert Dinero. It's very entertaining.
When Hill beat him with the pistol...that metal clakging like sound....god damn that is a beating one will always remember!
Yay! I love watching your reactions on my subway ride to work. I always have just enough time, and this is an exciting one.
I loved your reaction, but now you're scaring me because you understand and anticipate this one so well. You are 100% gangster flying under the radar!
In a completely different vein but still crime stories are two of my favorite old, old British movies from the 1950’s, both starring Alec Guinness. “The Lavender Hill Mob” and “The Lady Killers” about complicated, technical robberies gone awry. Very funny tales of crime.
2 more movies with Robert DeNiro and Martin Scorsese are Cape Fear and of course Taxi Driver 🚕
Scorsese's greatest masterpiece. "Casino" is an excellent companion to this film.
What is your favourite gangster movie? :)
Scarface...
This one
This one or Casino
Aside from Goodfellas, that would have to be Casino starring Robert DeNiro and Joe Pesci teaming up again with director Martin Scorsese.
Scarface🤒
You should check out 'Cop Land' from 1997. Both Ray Liotta and De Niro reunite but with both much smaller parts. Stallone is the main star in it and IMO it's his 3rd best character out of his entire filmography. Rocky and Rambo being the other two.
I read the book "Wiseguy" that the movie is based on. The movie is pretty accurate. Once in go into witness protection it is for life. You can't get out.
A lot of these actors are in The sopranos series.
Maybe Scorsese's best - and that says a lot for a director with a few masterpieces under his name!
This is one of my favorite Scorsese films.
If you liked it, it is the first part of an unofficial trilogy with Casino and The Irishman.
I absolutely lost it when he handed the gun to her and your grey cat had a shocked look on it's face and then just looked and you and left.
All your reactions are great and the adorable cats just make them even better!
And you can watch/listen to him on The Howard Stern show for many years. He died a joke and a drunk but he had his comedic moments.
ray liotta's performance is fantastic
@SoFull_ImFeelin it I love this movie. ray liotta also played great in turbulence
Love your reactions. You should watch "Casino," about how the Mob (which, of course, does not exist) built the city of Las Vegas.
I used to play soccer right next to the prison Paulie was in. In Ft Worth. Didn’t know it till I saw this movie, lol
A great De Niro film that deserves greater attention than it gets and I recommend it, Midnight Run
Another movie that Martin Scorsese and Nicholas Pileggi worked on together was Casino. You should react to that one too, another great movie.
Millers Crossing is an excellent offbeat artistically executed gangster film by the Coen Brothers.
