By-Tor is the character that comes and saves the travelers, by defeating The Necromancer. He first appeared in the prior album "Fly by Night" in the song "By-Tor and The Snowdog" Check that one out, too. Rush had many "Epic" songs in the first several albums, including By-Tor/Necromancer, Fountain of Lamneth, 2112, Xanadu, Cygnus X-1 Book 1 and Cygnus X-1 Book 2 (Hemispheres), La Villa Strangiato, Jacob's Ladder, Natural Science, The Camera Eye, Witch Hunt, etc. I recommend checking them all out! Welcome to the rabbit hole.
Many people didn’t know anything about Rush until Moving Pictures (Tom Sawyer, Limelight, etc…) and Subdivisions, and so on… but there was SO much more before that- when the record companies were pushing back. Rush said 🖕🏻and look what happened
When my daughter (now 21) was 13, I turned her onto Rush. She immediately “got it.” She pillaged thru my collection and took many of my Rush CDs. Her favs to this day are Hemispheres and Farewell to Kings and she keeps em in her car. Proud dad☺️
"The Necromancer " is the last song on side one of the Caress of steel album. I highly recommend that you turn the record over and give a listen to side two. Side two is all one song ,"The Fountain of Lamneth" . You will not be disappointed.
In my humble opinion but this is some of Alex’s greatest guitar work. I would say do Bytor a snow dog… another epic story telling song… An then you have to do Cygnus X1 book 1 an then Cygnus x1 book 2 another crazy sci-fi story that is done over 2 albums! Book 1 ends an album an book 2 opens the next album These 3 guys were genius story writers an tellers
Man.. Alex is soo under-rated.. that guitar work at 10:50 paints a picture of a chase and fight.. and anxiety... in one of his interviews i saw him talking bout how much thought goes into each part so it is the right atmosphere for the song, never heard anyone talk bout it like that before
Dude - I love your commentary and appreciate how you show your enjoyment through your movement - constantly grooving to the music. The ending part that reminds you a little bit of country, reminds me of spending my early 1980s summers in Wisconsin as a kid from CA. A different environment with relaxed and friendly towns - no fences around the backyards, roadside vegetable stands, and a lot of outdoor activities. Good times - honest times - friendlier times. If you like instrumentals, they have few to short-circuit your brain. Try La Villa Stangiato first as it's their oldest from Hemispheres 1978. Do the official video or Live in Cleveland. The difference between the two videos is about 33 years.
This is one of their songs that had other major artists from that time shaking in their boots to ever measure up to this level of mastery! Check out Dream Theaters live cover of Necromancer. Those guys are some of Rush's biggest fans.
Neil was an avid, and voracious reader, even before he joined the band. And continued to be so, to the end. This was one of the major factors in the bands decision to have him write the lyrics. It's always good to be a reader, no matter your level of education.
So cool to see young kids like you discovering this great music. Not just music but like you said , prose, literature. It should be no surprise to you to learn that Neil ( the lyricist) is a total book worm and has written a few of his own
I truly have been enjoying this journey of discovering Rush. Amazing music and incredible storytelling. I have since read his book Ghost Rider. It was like i was on a journey with Neil.
Subscribed! Do plenty of 70’s Rush before moving to their 80’s. You’ll appreciate the transition, the growth of the Power Trio. Love hearing Neil on this track, it’s God like. Alex’s guitar work is transcendental stuff. Geddy’s voice is so powerful and subtle. Artists of the highest dimension.
I've seen in many comments that Alex Lifeson is criminally underrated, which is true. Caress of Steel is a criminally underrated Album... Back in 89' when you went to a "music store" to purchase a hard copy cd, or cassette, Caress of Steel was in the discount bin along with Presence from Led Zeppelin, and The Final Cut from Floyd... 3 rock solid Albums for $5.99 each.
The album that got me into Rush in 78 when i was 11, 6 months later i saw them on the Hemispheres tour in the UK .Happy times.I was still 11 now i'm 56 and 3/4
Thanks for your reply. No other people doing reactions has ever replied. I hope you will research and learn more about RUSH. I just checked out the journey of the three on Google maps. They are essentially traveling from just outside downtown Toronto to downtown Toronto. There is at least is a little bit of forestland around the Don River. The prism may just be street cameras views. It's not that long of a trip, however, beware of the necromancer.

There's a suite of songs that comprise Side 2 of this album, "The Fountain of Lamneth." I highly recommend it. It speaks to life's journey. Awesome sauce.
Loved the mention of John Cazale in the context of greatness - 6 films was far too short! (Dog Day Afternoon is my favorite non-Godfather film of his). Thankfully we were blessed with decades of Rush, but even that eventually came to an end. All the suggestions listed here for next Rush reactions are awesome. You simply can't go wrong!
Dog Day Afternoon is one of my favorite movies of all time. Had the good fortune to shake Al Pacino's hand last year and take a picture. Excited for more Rush!
Aside from being one of the world’s best drummers, Neil Peart was also a voracious reader, and that propensity for reading was reflected in his lyrics. Unfortunately, Caress Of Steel met with a less than stellar reception, both from the public (especially their critics) and from fellow musicians. They were on tour with KISS while writing CoS, and when they played a couple tracks for Paul Stanley, it was evident that he just didn’t get it. The CoS tour was dubbed the “Down the Tubes” tour, because their shows were attracting fewer and fewer people, and the boys honestly thought it was the end of their music career. On top of that, the record label was really leaning on them to produce more radio friendly tunes in the same vein as Bad Company. Alex, Geddy and Neil decided they’d rather go back to working mundane jobs at home than give the suits what they were demanding. With that in mind, the next album they made was 2112, and for next 35+ years, their creative decisions were never again questioned by the powers that be.

If you like storytelling based on classic literature with supreme musicianship then you HAVE to do Xanadu by RUSH. Based on the poem Kubla Khan by Samuel Taylor Coleridge.
