I would enjoy following your restoration. A few years ago, my back went out, and I had to quit working on vehicles. Our youngest son then took over the garage, rearranged everything, and has since moved out. Somewhere I have a Haynes 1978 RD400 manual that I couldn't put my hands on this past week. ☹ The top end looks like it'll be the big question. The gearbox should be fine. I see the original airbox is gone and it has K&Ns. It also has chambers instead of the stock exhaust. I put braided steel brake lines on, and it really made a difference in stopping power and brake feedback and was money well spent. That gas tank may need to be epoxied on the inside and they make gas tank paint. I always had trouble with the countershaft seal, and usually wept oil on the left side, but your bike looks like it leaked bad. I used to run Michelin tires, with a racing compound on the front, but tires have changed a whole bunch since the last millennium. Good luck with the rebuild! Take care.

    • @RZ350NC
      @RZ350NC 2 роки тому

@@XplorerSteveDIY Exhaust chambers are tuned exhaust pipes for two-strokes and are analogous to "headers" for four strokes. They reflect the pressure wave caused by the exhaust ports being opened back up the pipe and aid in extracting more horsepower. They usually narrow the powerband, making the engine "peakier", but with higher horsepower. I liked mine.

I had a ‘74 RD 350 A. That’s the predecessor to your RD400. I added a windshield and JC Whitney saddle bags. I toured half the US. The 400 is smoother, quieter, and has a broader power curve than the 350. You have aftermarket air cleaners, aftermarket pipes, and aftermarket cylinder heads. I would lose the fairing - it’s shot, anyway. Fun bike. Good luck.

I would enjoy watching you rebuild the bike and get in in running order. I have been into bikes since a young age and currently own a number of street/dirt bikes. I rode a 1973 Yamaha 175 2 stroke trail bike as a teenager in the 1980s. As far as your rusty gas tank, I had a fiberglass bodied dune buggy back in the day that had a rusty gas tank. I got tired of clogged fuel filters so I cleaned and sealed the gas tank with Eastwood Gas Tank Sealer. It worked great. I didn’t come close to getting all the rust out but it still worked great by coating and sealing the rust to a point that I never got rust in my filter or carbs again. They still sell the sealant. I just bought some from amazon to seal a leaking oil lantern and again it worked great.

When I was a very young manl the RD400 was such a cool bike! A little story about the RD400...I had a friend who bought one. One day he came to my home and bragged to me how fast his RD400 and proceeded to tell me how it was way faster than my small block '70 Camaro.
so of course we decided to drag race where I proceed to beat him (to my surprise). A few weeks later he comes over to show me his new expansion chamber pipes and proceeds to tell me how there's no way I could beat him now. In the mean time I had changed the rear diff gearing in my car from 3:08 to 3:55s so we pull up onto the road where we had raced the last time where I proceed to beat him again. I think he was in disbelief as he kept shaking his head saying he couldn't understand. well that was the last time we raced and we never spoke of it again. but I still thought it was a cool bike. I always loved the sound of a twin engine two stroke with expansion chambers as it always reminded me of the sound of a road racing bike.

Steve - let me open by saying my wife and I love your channel. We're all about the same age so SURPRISE, we have a lot of the same interests. When you rolled out the RD400 the memories came flooding back to us - my wife and I have been together since we were 15-16 years old and back in High School the RD400 was my coveted speed machine. I ultimately ended up with the first in-line 4 KZ-750 and my now wife of 38 years used to take that thing everywhere. Remember the old KH750 two-stroke triples? I almost killed myself on a KH500 one day but that's another story...
Anyway - please show the rebuild on your RD. I know it's unreasonable but I would watch every second of your footage and then watch it all again.
We just sold off our last bikes - my wife rode a Suzuki Boulevard and we had a Gold Wing, and we also had a Harley soft tail I turned into a solo seat low rider... Too many crazies on the roads up here. Avid campers too - we've been at it for almost 50 years now.
We're really bad you're back and get why you took time off. We're in the same boat Steve - we're also moderate preppers (no tin foil hats...yet) and we get where you're coming from. We're also planners (retired debt free at 48) and can't believe the things going on in the world today.,

I appreciate your comments and stories. Been waiting for the weather to warm up, like now, in order to attempt to un seize the motor and de-rust/clean the gas tank. This will be a long project and I will likely give some semi-detailed updates. There is not one thing on this bike that does not need rebuilt or some major attention. 20 years under the desert sun will do that. My efforts will likely be off and on. ha. Take care.

@@XplorerSteveDIY Hey man - Just re-read my post and I meant "we're glad you're back" instead of the auto-corrected mess up above. Vicki (my better half) says she wants to see the build too, and not to worry about the success - ALL ROADS LEAD TO HARBOR FREIGHT! We live on an Island up in the Pacific Northwest and our closest one was a couple of hours away in the direction of Seattle (RUN FORREST, RUN) and we will not go to Seattle.
Anyhow - enjoy the weather - we still have a little way to go - we're finishing up the winter storms (blowing gusts to 50-60 right now..) and then we'll be in the dry season again until next October or so. Clear skies and mid-70s all summer long.
      Later tater. We'll be watching.

When I was in high school I had it's baby brother, the RD350. Great little bike, and being a two-stroke it had more power than most expected from a street bike of that displacement. I liked the Autolube feature which has a seperate oil tank under the seat where you put in the two-stroke oil so you didn't have to mix it in. I also liked the reed valves which would open from the vacuum created when the piston went down and allow fuel in. Same for the exhaust, but in reverse. Simple and effective! Two cons do come to mind: 1) Can't see squat in the mirrors due to the vibration. 2) The vibration can be... shall we say, "numbing." I rode it from San Bernardino down to San Diego and back and my backside could sure tell. LOL Still a great bike and a lot of fun! :) Hope you enjoy bringing it back!

Because of the elimination of the OE foot pegs, OE cylinder head replacement and the addition of the Cafe Racer style fairing , this could be a race bike before. Since it is a gravity feed fuel system, you should get the engine running first by using an aux fuel tank. I cleaned a poorly rusted motorcycle gas tank before by filling it with finely crushed stone, sand and gasoline. Tied it to my kid skateboard so that I can slosh the mixture( back and forth) inside easier. Believe it or not, it worked. Make sure you remove the shut off valve though. The fuel screen on the shut off valve will be damage if not remove. All the best on the project.

@@XplorerSteveDIY Regarding to the seat. If you wanted to upholster it economically. I would recommend this. Use an electric knife for carving turkey (this is a must knife to use on foam to have a better control). Cut the bad part of the seat foam. Make straight cuts for easier gluing. It looks like the foam against the set pan is still good. Try not to disturb it if possible. Then go to Galaxy Foam here in Las Vegas and buy the correct foam density. Cut the foam larger than you need for shaping. After you glued the foam with 3M Foam Spray adhesive, use a 4 1/5 disc grinder with 60 grit flap disc and shape the foam accordingly. Try it on a scrap foam first to get the feel of it. Then make the seat cover. The reason I suggested this is because to make a foam from a foam block and correctly fit it to the pan is almost impossible. When they make OE seat foam, they use a mold to properly fit to the seat pan. It can be done but I think it will be a lengthy process. When I viewed your channel way back, it seems that you did upholstering before. I saw a industrial sewing machine from the background. I hope this helps. I like to see the project at least rideable. Looking forward to your channel notification.

It would be wise to go through the engine thoroughly as part of your refresh, or it will likely cost you more in the long run. New crank seals and a rebuilt crankshaft as a minimum would be a sensible move. These are great bikes to own and will give a lot of enjoyment but only if you build them right, otherwise they can be troublesome and problematic.

Also, be careful about the type of 2-stroke you use in the oil injection system. There are synthetic 2-stroke oil that will not mix with petroleum base oils. They will cause the oil to gel and not flow through the oil injection pump. I’ve seen engines destroyed because of this. I ran my RD350 on a strict diet of Yamalube 2-stroke ( not Yamalube R). My engine performed well and there was minimal carbon buildup at a top-end job.

Apple Cider Vinegar would work better than the white vinegar. Throw some old nuts or screws in there also to add some abrasion. Let it sit for days then agitate and let it sit again. Drain and repeat. Vinegar takes longer but will do the job. Or do the quick route and use some muiriatic acid. But careful to do it outside as the fumes will flash rust anything near it.

Would you be fixing this bike?
And if you fix it would be willing to sell it ?
I'm very much interested to buy RD 400 bike in a perfect working condition.

In 1977 I was a sophomore in high school. Always love the smell and sound of two-stroke.
This came up in the local classified. I lowballed and he excepted.

I would load the cylinders with mystery oil and let them soak for days. By god that needs a real steam cleaning, I say steam because of less water around electrical components. Hay saw happily houseless on Chris-Travels think he might make a comeback.

    1977 RD 400 "D" in French Blue
Looks to be almost Original Except for...
J&R Chrome Expansion Chambers Decent Pipes...You get to keep the Center Stand with these pipes
DG Sunburst Radial Heads ...Higher Compression ...Improved Squish Configuration
Rear Sets / After market Foot Pegs + Linkage....Always Come Loose Need Adjusting ...Noisy Metal on Metal Sounds..I did Not like them....Made My own from Stock RZ350 parts
Stock Air Box Delete / Now With Paper Air Pods ..K&N's Be sure to Take Note of Main Jet Size / # Jetting = Critical
Handle Bars = Super Sport type
This Bike Looks like one that was Purchased New with Mods as a Package Deal
I Seen A lotta guys Buy 1977 / 78 from the the Dealers with Mod Packages like this
Heads, Pipes, Jetted / Tuned Carbs, Rear Sets foot begs & After Market Handle Bars with Mirrors and the 1/4 Fairing Paint Matched
    My Suggestions
Steel Braided Brake Lines Frnt & Rear
CDI Electronic Ign Unless You are a Master @ Points... Setting BTDC Requires Gage + Timing Light
Making Sure the 2 Point Pads are Lubed....+ Checking Point Pad Wear for Break-in. And I always used a Dwell Meter Also To Dial them in for MAX / Optimum
If you Crack open the Bottom End Cases (Highly Recommended)
    Inspect the Crank Assembly
    Replace Main Brngs as Needed
REPLACE CRANK SEALS!! Critical Item for 2 Strokes!! Seals Are Cheap
Have the Crank "Trued & Welded" Well worth the $80.00 to $100.00 Bucks
The Oil Leak = Shift Shaft Seal.....Pull side Cover....Use a Pick to Remove ...grease New one be sure the Shaft is Clean ...Sand a bit if needed
Also Check the Neutral Switch Light ....3 Phillip Screws ....Replace O-Ring if Leaking
Pro Tip: whenever NecroMancing a 2 Stroke .....Verify Crank Seals are Good ...NOT Dry & Rotted
You don't want to get the bike Going ....only to have the Crank Seals Fail ...and Blow the Motor
Crank Seal are Pretty Cheap ......

Thanks for the very well thought out commentary. I did crack the bottom case and found that there is no rust. However, all the oil had leaked out and in the hundred plus degree Las Vegas summers for over 20 years. Left the bearings gummy. It’s all a part now and I’m going to be painting the frame and other parts that were black. There is not one item that doesn’t need attention with all the dry rot from the arid desert. I am in no hurry, but would like to find a good engine rebuilder as I feel this is outside of my skill set.
