I love this terrible detective. He bumbled into the mansion, fixed a random piece of chemical equipment out of pure altruism, found a single piece of evidence, assumed he'd cracked the case, and left promptly because "it would be loitering for me to stay inside too long". This is a brilliant and utterly terrifying idea of an omnipotent assassin.
The assassin is able to see the intentions of characters around him and the future. He can kill anyone he wants without breaking the law or directly encouraging them. All he needs to do is slightly tweak fate and let it play out on its own.

    •  11 місяців тому +35

Funnily enough, I know of two games that work like that, but instead of an assassin, the goal is the opposite, you need to stop people from dying. In Ghost Trick, you're a ghost that can rewind time 4 minutes before someone dies and, by only possessing objects, needs to stop people from dying. The game Sexy Brutale works a bit similar, you're not a ghost, but your interactions are also very limited.

There is actually something kind of like this in one Henri Poirot novel where (obviously spoilers for the whole novel) the murderer isn't actually omniscient but they very subtly and indirectly manipulate people into commiting murder. It's remarked that it's the perfect crime as they can't actually be prosecuted. They make seemingly innocuous comments to make others commit murder. Poirot solves this by outright killing them when he figures out (thus indirectly also making him a murderer). It's the last novel in the series under the name "Curtain: Poirot's Last Case".

From their perspective, this someone completely random other detective just happened to come and waltz in at the exact same day and never introduced himself as someone else or corrected anybody when referred to as this actually invited detective. I suspect the "not correcting" part might still lead to a sentence, as you're actively making others think you're someone you're not.

It’s very difficult because using real world laws even you “accidentally”killing someone is manslaughter.
Most “no kill” play throughs involve someone essentially luring the target into a booby trap which is 1st degree murder. They’re just adding a bunch of processes between them and the murder as if that absolves them of wrongdoing somehow.
There is a level where you can have two NPCs fight and one pushes the target off a balcony.

However, when I worked juvenile detention we detained a couple kids that got a burglary charge, because while they didn't steal anything from someone's garage, they admitted that they entered illegally with the intention of taking something, they just didn't find anything they wanted and they left. The admission of intent to steal increases the charge from misdemeanor trespassing or B&E to felony burglary.

I'm not sure if that still makes sense with the rest of the mission. When presenting the conclusion of the investigation to Alexa Carlisle, she still refers to the player as "Mr Whitmer", even in the detective start. I checked it. When we add that when she realizes you're not who you were thought to be, it's clear that "Whitmer" is not a mere name, 47 is actively impersonating someone else. The actual Mr. Whitmer is in the mission, though becomes passive the moment the player dons the detective outfit. In the game, impersonating is clearly not enough of a crime, but in the real world, he probably would be sentenced of impersonation through lie of omission.

If you use that to get into the secret room on the second floor above the library, you find a letter that can be used to convince Alexa Carlyle that her brother really did commit suicide. She'll give you the file and throw herself off the balcony in grief (which I think is a really horrible way for her to die). I think it's the only evidence you need. In fact, I'll test it now to be sure.

@@Dextinator12 Ok I just confirmed it. You can't carry the cane in on you person, but you can have it already in the manor in an Agency Stash. Nothing illegal had to happen for that. The official explanation is that "Grey's informant smuggles a briefcase into the manor" which is not really illegal, I don't think. You the player can carry around a briefcase in any disguise with no problem, Grey's informant is probably a member of the staff, and it's not illegal to leave a briefcase laying around. The cane can be legally taken from the briefcase, and can be legally carried, you just can't drop it and pick it back up.
What I did was I started as the Detective in Zachary's room with a Walking Cane in a pickup in the hall. I investigated everything in the room, none of which is illegal. I went to talk to Mr. Fernsby, and kicked off the main part of the investigation. I made a b-line for the Agency Pickup in the hall upstairs, and grabbed the walking cane from the suitcase which is marked as a legal action. I went to the secret room, got Montgomery's Note from the secret room. I then went to Mr. Fernsby to tell him I had all the evidence I needed, brought my case to Alexa Carlyle, and told her about the note and that her brother committed suicide, which I had the evidence to prove. I asked for the case file as payment, turned around and walked out to my bike, not a single crime committed, and Alexa having thrown herself off a balcony while I was making my way for the front door.
Not a single crime committed, and all objectives complete.

    3. Pull the book in the room to enter secret passage, grab floor plan, and exit using the other door

Great video! I like the part where you beat hitman (rather than just one level)

He explained that it wasnt possible, and it must have been very challenging for him to beat it. And i mean what sounds better: I beat hitman without committing a crime, or I beat one level in hitman without committing a single crime

@@tomyjohnny The one level isn't even challenging, Dartmoor is explicitly designed for you to do basically exactly this. You can figure out who killed Alexa's brother, figure out why, figure out how, and then figure out that they're going to try and kill Alexa the same way... and then the game enables you to help by repairing the stuff in the greenhouse.

@@tomyjohnny that said, a video that's basically "I understood the Dartmoor level" might be more of an achievement than I'm giving it credit for given media literacy these days. So.

It should be noted that 47 does have rules against killing innocent people.

I started the video thinking he would attempt to kill the target willingly, then I thought "wait, I'm pretty sure that's still a crime" but he managed to not even do that

There is another path as the detective where you can convince her to give you the file and then she goes and kills herself from the balcony, but that one requires you to hold the illegal cane to get to a hidden room with a decades old letter inside.

I wish this game had a way to do this in every mission. 😂 A challenge to find a way
