Years ago, when manufacturers started replacing the twist wire loop on a spinnerbait with the easier to make R-bend, I was skeptical. Yes, it eliminates the rare occasion of fishing line getting pinched in between the twist wire loop, and it probably is easier for manufacturers to make an R-bend than a twist loop, but the obvious result is the spinnerbait is not as strong. Justin's tip strengthens the bait. Thanks, Justin. I use plenty of R-bend spinnerbaits, but prefer the twist wire loop.
It is tough. There’s two ways to do it. Either try and wrap it around both wires or push it over the top with a pair of pliers. Once you get it on there correctly, it won’t come off and it will be worth the effort! Good luck out there!
Great video! I never used them much until last year my buddy showed me how he uses a spinnerbait in lily pads and we did great in WI. Buying split rings tomorrow!!
I just seen where Strader said that Swindle showed him that split ring trick, I think that’s cool how you guys pass down the tricks to help each other out
Great tips, Justin! I've been fishing spinnerbaits for years and that split ring tip, is awesome. definitely going to try this! Do you recommend a brand of rings? There are so many on the market with different thicknesses. Thanks again and good luck to you in your tournament season!
This is the tip i been looking for. I want the absolute thinnest wire i can get on a spinner bait. Of course i have always had a problem with spinner baits getting bent all out of shape and good for only 3 or 4 fish if I'm lucky. Thank you Justin Lucas for this tip.
Awesome tips Justin.I got some flatnose and that looks good. Going to try both these mods. There is a window in Feb.-March here in Texas you better be throwing a spinner. 👍
I throw a spinner all the time. Its def my fave bait. For me i have been throwing the lazer eye from bass pro with booyah for my smaller choices. Ill have to try some of the Berkeley spinner soon.
Good tips! Thank you for sharing. I have started tying wire around the upper and lower arms of my spinnerbait to accomplish the same thing. I have had too many of the R-bends fail.
@@bobcragle8124 I have some single strand, tinned copper wire that is easy to work with. I have also used some very fine, annealed stainless steel wire. I put a drop of epoxy on the twisted ends after trimming the excess.
I manufactured Spinnerbaits for many years. Sampo hardware is best for swivel. Make sure the blades have some weight. If hammered you should not see the impression through the blade. Skirt needs to be rubber and trimmed down. The blades need to engage immediately when bait hits the water. I really like the Megabass spinner baits.... natural colors
I recently had a large bass literally bite the ex large willow blade off a 1/2oz spinnerbait i ws about to pull out of the water to make another cast..I only got to see its huge head. It was a name brand known for the amount of water it moves. it's very likely the split ring connected to the thin wire just got opened a bit and slipped through. But this was in the same spot, I lost an approx. 10 lb largemouth at the bank two weeks prior, where it broke my 30 lb braid and swam off with my spinnerbait still in its mouth. Same model of spinner bait. The only difference was that I ran out of the white boot-tail swimbaits that like to use as trailers, and used one that was half an inch shorter. lol!
I can add to the split ring I use spinnerbaits for pike in summer and I use a bread tie on the end like that with the spilt ring just save a few from you bread put in table box hit it with a lighter plastic come off fast and your left with a thin strong peice of metal to tie off that loop
Berkley powerblade spinnerbaits are the best on the market along with the Booyah Covert series but if Berkley used Hildebrant blades it would be a wrap

These tips and secrets and "hacks" are great. I often use em. What I don't understand is: The bait companies. I'm sure I'm not the only person that watches these videos. Why aren't the manufacturers taking this information and running with it? They could very easily implement some of these things. I mean I've seen some pretty innovative suggestions and hacks that would be so easy for the manufacturer to incorporate into existing products that it's just silly that they don't. I dunno
I’m confused as to why that split ring would “take time to get it right.” Don’t you just put it over the wires before you tie the spinnerbait on or am I missing something?
You can either try and push it over the top with pliers or open it up and wrap around the wires, but have to be careful with it because the #1 split ring is so small it bends out easily if you try to wrap and can be really tough to push over the top on some spinnerbaits. I’ve noticed every brand is different in how easy or not it is to get it set up. Hope this makes sense.
Only way i can get the split ring to work is just push it over the R bend. I was wanting to know are you actually putting the split ring on the wire? If so i cant figure out how to get it on correctly. Please explan.
Pushing it over the R bend is totally fine. I do this with a pair of pliers. If I can’t push it over then I have to open the split ring and thread it through the other side. Hope this helps!
Great question! With the new Berkley spinnerbait you do not need a trailer hook. The shank is extra long so it eliminates having to worry about trailer hooks. It pegs them dude!
That split ring is freakin slick. I use braid and the knot slides around so much it drives me nuts. Im gonna do this and it should put a stop to that line slip. Thanks dude

How are you exactly placing the #1 split ring on the spinnerbait? Are you clamping it down? A video demo would have been helpful.
I am just pushing it over the line tie (r bend) of the spinnerbait if that makes sense.
coul you use that for musky? thanks
Absolutely. I don’t see why not.

17lb. Not 7lb. 👍
You ever tie the spinnerbait with braid instead of a split ring?
I have when I ran out of split rings. It works, but not as good as the split ring in my opinion.
