    Overall, the points were covered well. On the tug test, I only lift my landing gear a half inch, and, I leave my tailgate open just in case. I also visually check the locking jaws, just as you did. Regarding the safety brake cable, I use a caribiner and attach it to my truck, NOT the hitch. Many people connect it to their hitch, and IMHO, this is dangerous.

    I'm a trucker been one a long time the proper way to hook up a wagon the king pin top plate should be a slightly lower then the fifthwheel top plate so when you hook up it picks the wagon up off the legs so you don't bend them then do your tug. That's what the little chin fingers are for. That and also why the fifthwheel is at a angle when there's nothing on it

      100% asking out of curiosity, do you chalk the trailer wheels or have them locked?

    • @Dachamp2001

      @@ThePlthompson on trailers with air brakes no need unless the chambers are bad In return shouldn't be pulled anywhere till fixed. Electric brakes you have to plug in the pig tail (Electric cord) and if Necessary you can chock. Then activate the brake controller to lock the trailer brakes to do your tug.

    When tugging cover the brake with your other foot, if it’s not hooked you can stop before you tear up your tailgate. I’ve driven tractor trailer for years. You will want your pin a little lower it will take some of the bind off of landing gear if your not perfectly aligned

    I attach the breakaway cable to the frame of the hitch using a carabiner. That way you know its not going to fall off.

    Breakaway should always be connected to something that is connected to the chassis of the truck like the hitch. Not the hollow galvanized handle.

  • @rodx5571
    @rodx5571 14 днів тому

    ALWAYS use a lock, not a pin. If the rig will be out of your sight-line more than 10 seconds. Some jealous prick might pull your lock handle, and most people dont check it every time, if at all. Just an added measure of security. This goes for bumper tow trailers as well. ALWAYS use a hitch lock. Pins are easy to pull. This goes for both the ball lock and the receiver. Very cheap security measures. ANY tampering will be obvious by broken or missing lock. Always check your gear every time you stop, especially at a truck stop.

    I'm sorry maybe you answered this but how do you know if your fifth wheel receiver has a big enough slot for your kingpin and how do you measure or what do you measure or what do you do to make sure it does fit

    • @stella_rt
      @stella_rt  2 роки тому

      So most king pins, 99% are 2 inch. Including semi trucks. There is a larger 3.5 inch king pin that’s used for heavy haul. We are talking 100k and up loads

    Why doesn’t anyone put lube/ grease on the fifth wheel, I have been in truck maintenance for 40 years and a dry fifth wheel makes turning more difficult and wears the pin and plate out faster.

    Pull test is not fail proof. Just look at your locking jaws and make sure they are latched. Pull test does not guarantee you are hooked up whatsoever.

    • @daveyjones662
      @daveyjones662 4 роки тому +2

      Pull test is to make sure it is lock and sometimes it doesn't lock that's the reason for it and truck drivers do it to

    Just a word of advice you should not hook break away cable to fifth wheel release handle it should have a solid point to connect to cause it could easily slide off the handle and won’t engage brakes on trailer and it could also damage the handle if the trailer does come loose. Another thing is if the cable gets caught on something it could pull handle releasing trailer.

    • @stella_rt
      @stella_rt  5 років тому

      1. The handle has a locking pin,
      2. The force needed to release the handle is much greater than the force needed to pull the safety cable out
      3. There is absolutely no way the safety cable is going to “slide” off the handle.

      I 100% agree. I'm a DOT inspector and if this were a commercial vehicle, that would not fly. Needs to be connected to something solid like the rails

  • @greg9323
    @greg9323 5 років тому +7

    I'm glad you are sharing, but it was not fully correct. You should have the kingpin about an inch lower than the hitch head. As you pull back the kingpin will ride up on to the hitch head and lock into place. Good information and thank you for sharing, safe travel

  • @Rogue-Drone

    Had your jaws not closed properly around the king pin then the jaw release handle would not have pulled in completely and the safety lock would not have closed.
