    JR, I've been towing my 5th wheel successfully for 2 years now, however, at the beginning of every season I always watch your videos just for review. A simple mistake can cost thousands!! Thanks again, Sir!!

    Appreciate that you did the tug test, but for a bit extra redundancy, never hurts to grab a flashlight and visually look for the jaws around the kingpin.

      I grew up with Reese hitches where they look locked but they really are not and have seen enough damaged beds and trailers to skip this step

  • @Normal1855

    I removed the center rear headrest, and line the post holes up with the pin box for alignment. Then I just look through the rearview mirror and back the truck up. I don't use the mirror on the front of the fifth wheel.

    • @therealjr1715

      That works too...great suggestion
      I never was a fan of the mirror on the front of the 5th wheels but I know some people like it

    Why not lower the nose of the trailer before hooking up. Back close, but not under, hook up your light and brake pigtail. Then apply the trailer brakes will backing under, and lifting up the trailer. Perform your tug-test. Save an in-and-out of the cab and help prevent the trailer from walking away from you when hitting the pin.

    • @therealjr1715
      @therealjr1715 5 років тому

      The goal is to get the landing gear off the ground and tug test is to ensure the 5th wheel head has latched correctly and the trailer does not drop from a miss hitch. If the gear is down but just off the ground a bit it will only fall that far not causing damage to the truck or trailer. If the wheels were chocked when the trailers was unhitch you do not have to worry about the trailer walking backwards.

    You should always check both turn signals because for some reason they could be crossed and you turn your right blinker on the truck the left will turn on the trailer and vice versa

    I'm a trucker and it's weird how fifth wheel rv's are hooked up. Js🤷‍♂️ when we hook up we backup the ideally you want the king pin upper plate to contact the fifth wheel 2.5- 3inc above the risers (ramps) so it will lift the wagon off the ground (dolly's) then when locked In tug it all is good done deal.

    • @therealjr1715
      @therealjr1715 5 років тому

      Yep this is the way manufactures want it done with rvs

    Is there a reason why that plate and associated metal parts not coated with a little bit of grease? I’m asking because I just ordered a new Jayco fifth wheel and in approximately 3 months I will be doing this! Thanks!

    Can whatever the hitch pin is connected to (arm?) be raised or lowered if your truck is lifted or lowered?

    • @therealjr1715
      @therealjr1715 5 років тому

      Yes it can be. They call it the pin box but it does depend on how much of a lift you have on your truck

    Great video thank you. One question, will this 5th wheel fit under all over passes?

    • @KeystoneRVCenter
      @KeystoneRVCenter  2 роки тому

      Very loaded question. Short answer measure Your camper at its highest point while hooked up to your truck on level ground. Add 2" to it and round up your fractions. I personally like writing the number on the dash cluster where I can see it quick when I am driving. Most bridges have markings on them on what is going to be the height. The reason I add 2" and round up is so that I Have a error room if they did not remeasure after paving the road. Most bridges that are not marked are at least 14-16 foot tall. Semi trucks are 13'6''

    JR, during the hitching at what point do I lift the four jacks in the back, I know at the end I retract all but to get wheels on ground when do I do that?

    • @therealjr9175
      @therealjr9175 3 роки тому

      You should lift them before you start hooking up

    • @KeystoneRVCenter
      @KeystoneRVCenter  2 роки тому

      At the start of it. If you hit hitch height option on your keypad it will bring the backs up and reset the front to where it was before hitting auto level

    • @KeystoneRVCenter
      @KeystoneRVCenter  4 роки тому

      Check state law, but typically fifth wheels do not require safety chains. There may be exceptions to this depending on the style of hitch you're using. Gooseneck trailers on the other hand, will have safety chains. -MARK

    Why retract the front landings prior to the tug test? By lifting the front an inch, there's thousands of pounds on the hitch now. Should the trailer not be connected, those thousands of pounds will come crashing down that 1-inch. Not good at all. Keep it simple. Back.....CLICK.....Trailer brake.....Tug. Not drag the coach, TUG. Trust me.....When a coach comes crashing down on the front legs, it's not good for the trailer.

    • @therealjr9175
      @therealjr9175 4 роки тому

      We do it like this to prevent the legs from being bent. We see enough issues with it that we do it like this. I really wish blue ox still made a product they called the bed saver. That was one of the best things ever.
