"This is not Deviantart, its real Battletech art..."
I died.
I have looked through DeviantArt, a lot of the Battletech art there looks better than this😆
@@GhostBear3067 No joke, there's some amazing work on there.
@@patrickcoyle5469 I wish I could say some of that good art was mine but that would be a lie, so I am just happy the official artwork set the bar so low 😜😆
Well... let's just say that I wouldn't be surprised if the official art is the early works of some of the people dooing good BT art on Deviant want to forget but the internet in it's immeasurable indifference won't let them XD
@@SonsOfLorgar hey, always keep your old artwork so that you can make it clear that yes there have been improvements, and as a personal reminder that things have been a lot worse.
"Did I ever tell you kids about the Peach Pit Wars of '87?"
"You mean the time you opened fire in the produce section with your AR-15, Grandpa?"
yeah, thats the one billy.
The fact that half of these felt like someone drew over my aunt's family photo album reminds me how old this game is.
A lot of em were poster tracing!
Tex- "The guy on the right is from Space Tennessee because the double barrel is still in vogue" Me sitting in Knoxville- "When did the double barrel become passé?"
So okay, GW in the 80’s is overdosed with Heavy Metal.... while FASA apparently snorted on Glam Rock.
They likely had a good few hits of the leftovers from one of GW's binges.
Well you nailed it.
Where do you think the idea for "Canopian Battle Powder" came from?😜🤣
I mean, Warhammer 40,000 was basically, "Hey, what do we do with all these 2000AD minis?"
"Dunno. What'd we do with all the D&D minis?"
"Make a wargame?"
"Do it."
To be fair that was just the 80s they mentioned the shoulder pads but you would see those on everyone in media from the evening news anchor woman to as they mentioned Romulans and just about every other woman on TV or in a magazine. Combine that with the facts that counterculture at the time were leftover hippies and punks and you have a very strange look. It was a weird time that did not age well.
Looking at those Neurohelmets makes me think of one thing:
"Finally! Got something for me, Big Boss!?"
That bucket-head guy is my entire lance.
Goddammit that voice melts into the brain! I dread finding new pilots just because of that voice reverberating around the inside of my skull.
You have no idea how much I hate that fucking voice...
The strange hair thing - bald top and braids - is established as the custom among Lyran mechwarriors as they had a problem with making good neurohelmets in the third succession war, so they had to shave the top of their heads to get a good connection. Fortunately, technology advanced again.
Its sad...
that sounds like it would give you ALL the brain tumors
28:08 ワンダーワマン. The Steiner Wonder Woman. Stunning and brave.
Oh... like how they did electric chair executions by shaving top of head for better current access to the brain? XD
@@kinagrill I would assume so.
"Vampires are weak to... fire?!" "Yes." "Okay... I cast FIREBALL!"
Horse explosion
@@SpecialKLSX
There's no such spell.
That's why he's so hung up on FIREBALL!!!
Space Tennessee...Tex makes my day once again.
The art for the "druid guy" is done by Jeff Laubenstein who did a lot of the art for Earthdawn, another big FASA product... I honestly think he's great, he's got a very distinct style... but yeah, he's definitly stuck in drawing fantasy even when that's not what he's brought in for.
Intriguing!
When i saw the notification for this i was like,"wtf is youtube recommending now" Then i was,"wait a second. Is that battle tech art?!?!." Clicks on it "THE SANDWICH PORVOIDES."
This has been the one x-mas dump I've been waiting for.
I haven't been disappointed yet...
God, I feel old, because I know the stories behind almost every single picture in here....
you're only old when nobody sympathizes, and your stories fall on deaf ears, brother.
@@theblackpantslegion LOLOLOLOL -- Truth, right there.
5:50 the elemental and his suit. The first thing I thought of and blurted out when I saw how the suit was posed was "picture with the shy girlfriend!" And the person in the suit acting all embarassed and shy. Lol.
Theres an anime schoolgirl in that power armor.

10:00 that genuinely is the perfect face for someone who rides a hatchetman.
He's got that psychotic grin.
@@dubuyajay9964 You have to be a special kind of merc to Go charging in swinging for an Atlas head.
@@bthsr7113 You're not wrong.
The worst part about the lightsabers with cords jokes are that they are unwittingly right. It's called a protosaber (since it was before they worked out the kinks and miniaturized the power cells), and one of Luke's students in legends was clearly a hipster since he decided to bring it back.
Wait a second, wasn’t that Vanner?
We're going to duel next to this wall. When I swing, you can't step backwards. Makes perfect sense to six year old me.
"Maybe that's part of his military unit heraldry."
"CORINTHIAN LEATHER?!"
Candy at 12:19 actually looks like my bus driver from when I was a child. And she smoked unfiltered Lucky Strikes.
Oooooooh yeah baby! 80s and early 90s Battletech art??? Yes please!
Hey Tex, Happy Year! The sad thing is that I remember the basis of the "Crying Marik/Flag Removal" thing (sad in that it a thoroughly useless piece of information and an affirmation of how much time I spent with BattleTech in my youth). The picture come from the House Marik book, the crying Marik is one of the Marik family when he was in whatever military academy he was attending. He had boasted that he was the next great thing in military tactics. So, when the school held its annual wargame exercises the area he was defending was easily overrun by a lower classman and his unit who then replaced the Marik eagle with his own family's crest. Loved the episode, didn't stop laughing through out the whole thing. Great work.
Thanks. That's more information I had. Also Marik is hilarious
@@theblackpantslegion Your welcome. The "Bernadette Peters" picture is from the House Steiner book and is the band Thera and Her Red Deltas (or something like that). Haven't looked at this stuff in over twenty years and it's burned into my cerebellum. Probably when I'm a hundred I'll be senile and this will be the only thing I remember (so sad)! LOL
It's Kenyon Marik and to be fair, the tears make sense because when his father Ewan learned of the defeat he put Kenyon in hospital. Ewan was a mean drunk.

The funny thing is that my grandma DOES drive a bus and smokes Pall Malls.... lmao
For that giant mall mentioned around 42:00, you really feel for them with the timing.

The D&D looking art is re-adapted Shadowrun 2nd/3rd Edition leftover art, since it was published by same people. Hence why it looks like it could fit fantasy.
or Earthdawn...
It reminded me of SR
@@JoshuaCairns Yeah, pretty sure that one was originally made for Earthdawn.
I met Laubenstein a couple of times, at small conventions. He really is a pretty good guy.
@@trynnallen I really dislike his artwork (I couldn't explain why, other than that his faces tend to be extremely angular in a way that I find highly offputting and the excessively wrinkled foreheads he tends to use), but I'm sure he's a good guy.
Oh god, this was a great reminder of the wackiness of early BT in general!
I gotta admit it also reminds me how much I want another Tex Talks Battletech episode.
It was pretty obvious from a lot of these that they either hired models for these pictures or (more likely) they used pictures from magazines and newspapers. Considering the average budget of FASA in the heyday of Battletech's Technical Manuals, everywhere they could save a buck was a plus to them.
Wanted ads in the newspapers is my bet XD
Most of these are traces of character actor headshots.
The pic of them taking down the Marik flag with the guy crying: Holy Crap, they are still using Miles Gear for training 600+ years in the future. No wonder he is crying!
First thing I said when that one popped up was "wait, whys he wearing a miles gear harness?"
@@Hengebobs It is a dark time.

26:47 the extreme version of Mister Clean is called "Lex Luthor"... you're welcome
Whelp, Clan Snek Cobra strikes again.
Seeing a Part 2 to this debauchery brought me to stellar tears of joy, thank you guys.
George is back, Duncan Fisher has graced us with his presence. Such an honor. Seriously though, always great to see you back man.
wow, such great art.
I didnt know Ron Jeremy was in the Gryphons battletech merc unit.
This is Candy, after her night with the Kergan.
Why does Steven Spielberg look like he is trying some thing new with a Farrah Fawcett hair do?
Frankin and Bass did side of of an old man doing martial arts?
Totally a shadowrunner with Sideshow Bob hair cut.
Katrina Steiner at age 55 still trying to look like she is 25.
The artist that did the space gnome has done a lot of art for Shadowrun 2nd edition.
The robot's name from "Buck Rodger's" was "Twiki".
Oh, God, I *_remembered_* that. This may be very, very sad.
Beedee beedee beedee beedee... Hey buck...
Go figure George brings up my dads dad's favorite candy, Horehounds... omg dying over here.
Everyone knows about the Macross origins for a lot of Mech and all LAM designs. Most of the rest, including some vehicles, come from a nearly forgotten series called "Dougram" and the rest of the original art is from a movie and OVA series called "Crusher Joe". Crusher Joe is available on DVD and soon on Blu-Ray in North America; you can find Dougram on YT and certain places that Captain Harlock likes to frequent.
Link to some Crusher Joe art, featuring what BattleTech called the Locust: cdn.swisscows.ch//lh3.googleusercontent.com/-K62Z_gTYhwE/UWyHJkBAi5I/AAAAAAACFWQ/ur2hJz5P-Rk/s900/ergqwegwegwegwegwegwegwegewg.jpg

Thanks for the video, I was supposed to be brewing beer today but due to issues that occur in life can't do it today so this was a nice distraction
There's always next year.
George Ledoux needs to commentate the BattleTech VirtualWorlds mech pod tournament at MAGFest as Duncan Fisher.
I'd love to see that.
I was there in Jan 2020 and had fun talking with the guys who were running the pods. I probably couldn’t do a real, live running commentary as DF, but if I’m ever invited back to MAGFest and the pods are there...
Atleast do the opening announcement
Huh. Well my productivity has been destroyed, but on the plus side morale is through the roof! It's honestly just super nice to be able to relax, sit back, and listen to these three (semi)lovingly tear into old art that stands up... well... uh... about as well as the earthquake-pogostick line I was trying to shoehorn in here. The added bit on old art from Palladium was just the proverbial cherry on top.
Topnotch!
@39:03, there is an obscure piece of text somewhere in one of the books that refers to Steiner neuro helmets and how they're superior to the other houses, but they require direct skin contact to the occipital bun. I assume the artist read or heard that at some point and decided that this is how he/she draws mech pilots.
That's in the original House Steiner book. Since MechWarriors are so highly regarded, that hairstyle was seen as quite glamorous. Many Mech pilots kept shaving their hair in that manner long after they retired just so people would recognize their special status.
As a long standing veteran of Solaris 7 I will add if you are a Solaris jock the odds of you getting shot while not on TV are equally bad you just have a big stompy robot to step on them as revenge
Does Solaris have lance teams?
@@dubuyajay9964 sometimes though there is an unspoken rule if another jock gets dropped off the field the gang in question gets a new sunroof at their base usually combined with arson and or many many bullets
They look like they are replacing the Marik flag with the hood decal of a 70's Trans Am.
Chalk up another win for the Smokey (and the Bandit) Jaguars
Even in the 80’s, I hated that weird line art, but in particular, I hated Laubenstien’s art the most. His “style” still gives me Forrest Whitaker eye.
His people are EXTREMELY angular in a way that doesn't always make anatomical sense.
I still come back and rewatch these on occasion. Quality.
I remember seeing some of this Battletech art back in the day and thinking..."I can do better!" I love it, thanks for the early confidence booster and the laughs Battletech!
How are you doing now?
I love the old school artwork. It just has so much character. lol
My spouse is an artist and was able to ID how they got that Gryphons page. It's magazine headshots, traced and (quickly) altered. Victo looks like Tim Curry. Buck looks like Nic Cage. Betting most of the others were celebs as well.
wow, that's a good catch. I think that's hilarious.
Yep...
10 minutes in and this is true:
Early BTech art hasn't aged well. mostly... for the most part...
I think I saw that double suppressor at my local Urbanmech dealership. I also saw that 1st piece of art there. It is the Urbanmech Mk 1. The Juiceman ad is still there.
For your information the plant wearing guy is the same as the one in the wanted ad in the background.... Man I hate Clan territory.
Watching this in 2022 after also watching part 1 - please, please do more like these. Damn near pissed myself laughing.
the angry bullet head looks like an old iron man concept
I'd be happy if I were Victo Franz, the Hatchetman was made by Buckaroo Banzai!
Really wonder how many Shadowrun art submissions ended up in Battletech pages.
The Steiner Shoulder Pads go along with the Steiner Scout Lance...
Everything is big in Steiner space !
I don't remember the art looking that bad (and hilarious) in the late 80's/ early 90's when I played. But sweet baby Yoda is this funny... and fuck I'm old.
Most of it isn't but the bad art is amazingly bad.
First edition art could be really.... different...
46:50: See, this is why it's difficult to talk about Battletech. That's Katherine Steiner, Archon of the Lyran Commonwealth in the 2600s or something. Katherine Steiner Davion (Victor's crazy sister) was named after her before she decided to change her name to Katrina Steiner, her grandmother. "I want to be confused for a more recent ancestor."
Accurate to the inspiration material of stupid European noble traditions, at least. Which Frederick or Wilhelm of Prussia are you talking about, again?
@@InchonDM Fritz, I'm just gonna call him Fritz.
If anyone were crazy enough to greenlight a Battletech movie, the only person I can think of who could play Katrina Steiner would be Cate Blanchett.
Who would play her when she was younger?
@@dubuyajay9964 considering she was 49 in 3025, I don't think we'd need to worry too much about casting anyone else.
The 1950's Ice Cream Man at 17:50 is wearing a harness that is from the MILES (Military Integrated Laser Evaluation System) gear. A laser tag system worn by all soldiers and is also installed on vehicles. Those little black circles are actually dome shaped and they detect when a laser strikes a person. Those two circular objects on his collar are rank? So he is a Lieutenant in Star Trek terms. In the BattleTech universe he is probably the PLO (Permanent Latrine Orderly) and those two guys with the pistols flushed him out out of hiding, He's crying because they are Clanners who are eating all his urinal deodorizing cakes because they think they are giant size breath mints. "These freeborn are savages. They waste these tasty items by spitting them out into the urinals"
Oh man, more art critiques, its a Festivus Miracle! Mister Tex and crew thank you for another year of great content and wish you a Happy New Year!
a lot of it looks like repurposed shadowrun art ... and likely was!
Same publisher and shared quite a few artists and writers, so probably so.
More like rejected. Because a lot of shadow run art was positively badass. The beastiary book was amazing.
There was a small exerpt saying that some warriors and nobles shaved the top of thier heads to allow better neurohelmts connections
Steiner.
Yeah, and the "pigtails in front of the ears" bullshit was a sign of nobility or something like that. Been a long time since I dug out my original Steiner sourcebook.
Honestly, a mechwarrior who looks like a bus driver makes sense. They aren't out there doing backflips. Their job's to sit in a cockpit for 16 hours.
the robot from buck Rodgers was "twiki"....years ago I used to see the actor that played him in his car hauling around the studio lots I worked on...in a HUGE golden Lincoln continental with everything on it with this little 3 ft guy at the wheel, License plate was "twiki" no joke!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey Tex,
sometimes there are things depicted which got implemented properly only years later, (more than ten years) when someone looked at a picture and realised that a unit in the background isn't described already in a TRO. But I think you are more knowledgeable in Battletech than I am.
My response to 23:20 - did you guys notice how the one side-view of Amaris with his moustache looks like the actual shark on one of the Rim Worlds Republic things? 44:40 - sketch of Tim Heidecker having a midlife crisis.
Every Xmas I re-watch these.
Oh lordy...shit guys. I'm just sitting here with the headphones on watching this, tears in the corner of my eyes, and my gut is starting to hurt from laughing...
I love how they keep talking and suddenly change tracks, letting you know when they change pictures.
I haven’t laughed so hard in the last year as I have in the last week and a half while watching the Christmas Dump episodes.
Reminds me of the evolution of D&D art. Reminds me that we truly live in a golden age of accessibility for baseline competent artists.
Dr. Insanotron looks like Kevin Siembieda wanted a Dr. Wily analogue in his setting and no one could tell him no because he owns the company.
Tech wasn't the only thing lost in the future ... looks like they lost a few chromosomes along the way. ..... maybe they need a bit more shielding around the reactors.
40:21 I was already running Original Man-at-Arms jokes at first glance! Of course, he's still working his way up to that physique, hence the compact but dense workout weight...
Happy New Year gentlemen. May your pants fly high over your enemies... and may the camera never pan down while they do.
Man..you guys have my head hurting from laughing so hard at work...my coworker looking at me like wtf? Lmao
Minigun Pistol ! Capable of sustaining a rate of fire of 200 rounds per second for .06 seconds!
So you think they stuck at least 70 ammo in this badboy? It is too generous for such an advanced design! I believe the right time is 0.3 seconds!
At least whatever is in front of you will probably be dead.
My favorite picture i think is from the old mercenary book. Girl standing by her mech and written on the leg it says " Feed me, fight me, fuck me, or get the hell out of my way."
BattleTech is the future of the '80s. :)
Sweet mother of good there is more(happy whiskey noises)
Thank you for doing this. This art style brings back so many great memories for me.
I'm sick and stuck at work on New Year's Eve. You guys have made my day much better.
Haha!!! Bob Ross piloting an Orion. For some reason I can see that happening.
There are no mistakes, only happy accidents.
@@GMorgan84 That crater? Happy accident
Amazing how a game published in the 80s and set in the future loooked so much like the '70s ... the recent past of the 80s.
So confirmed Battletech had catgirls before Anime did. Therefore Battletech is cooler then Anime.
I like the Federated Suns dress uniform. 1) because it's cool conceptually and 2) because it's go the Mister Teeth guy wearing it.
All of the clan artwork is from the 90s (not 80s) as a side note. A lot of this art is the work of Jeff Laubenstein. Frankly I always thought most of his stuff looked awful but iirc he did most of FASA's color plates (and was their art director until 1995 or 96).
Happy New Years BPL and George! Thank you for all the laughs.
@7:26 oh look it's Cher and Sonny Bono...
BTW tex; Juice Man is an superhero in a webcomic.
Happy New Year Black Pants Legion, having one of my Battletech demotivational posters included in one of your videos is still one of the highlights of my 2019.
Believe it or not, that was what predated the lightsaber: this fucking unwieldy thing called a Protosaber that required the Jedi using it to wear a big Ghostbusters backpack with a wire plugged into your handle. A less elegant weapon for a clunkier, crappier age.
Hey Tex, there is likely to be a Corp Merc test around the 3rd/4th!
