If you're interested I know they are crying out for carers and they even offer on the job training. And warehouse work (I know it hard but it's work) is a good option. I have said these jobs because they're no entry level jobs and just require you to be a human being.

That’s a very expensive way to shop. I shop at Home Bargains, but selectively as some things are expensive, more expensive than other places and other items are great bargains. The only way to maximise your savings is to shop around. Keeping an eye on at the very least the prices of the things you buy regularly. 59p for a tiny tin of beans is a rip off.

    • @TheRustylungs
      @TheRustylungs 3 місяці тому +26

Aye lidl does a full size tin of beans for 42p

NOPE Aldi still have beans for 28p. for the 410g tin.
There seems to be a tin shrinkage happening the 420g may be going to 410g for the same price. since there website show both sizes

Home Bargains is good if you want a product that isn't on offer at another shop nearby. It's the Lidl/ Aldi/ Primark /McDonald's trick now where people associate it with being cheap but even M&S have become cheaper than Lidl in a lot of products

Making your kebabs is a good way to eat cheaply and fairly healthy.
From my local Tesco I bought a pack of 6 Pitta Breads for 50p.8 Tesco sausages for £2. Medium size cucumber for 70p. Red onion for 30p. Tomato's for 90p. White cabbage for 70p. £5.10p total.
With that I can easily make 2 kebabs a day for 3 days plus use up the remaining veg for a salad.

I use white cabbage, which is the cabbage they use in kebabs in chip shops. At least in the ones where I live.
It's nice and crunchy and goes well with the other veg. Try it and see if you like it. As I said, it's cheap, stays fresh enough to eat for a week and as it's a tightly leaved cabbage, you can make half a dozen kebabs and still have some left over for a salad. Very good value for money food item!

I'm impressed! That looks like food most of us would actually want to eat
My "between jobs" grocery list is:
    Loaf of bread,
    Dozen eggs,
    Package of cheese slices,
    Package of pasta,
    Can of tomato sauce,
    Bacon.
It gives you lots of meal combinations for about 10-ish bucks.
Edit: I worked for a couple of years at a bakery in between jobs. The pay wasn't great but I was able to take home lots of free day old baked goods. I almost never went grocery shopping

I love a chocolate crunch from my local bakery 🧁 call me old school but the simple taste of a chocolate crunch just brings me straight back to lunchtime at primary school when I would go and get seconds before the dinner lady’s packed up. I loved it every Friday I would always have seconds sometimes even thirds 😋😊😇😁🥲☺️😋 the good ole days. If I worked or owned a bakery I would set up a system to make sure I waste nothing and anything that is left over give to a member of staff like yourself. Or make sure the homeless get some food ! Waste not want not…..

I tend to batch cook at the start of the month (casseroles, rice and lentils, spag bol, curries, chill, etc) and then eat that for a couple of days and freeze some for later in the month. I'm in work but am in a position where I only have about #30 a week to spend on my food shop which feels quite difficult now esp here in London. Hope you find a new job soon!

Pro tip. Buy Tesco potatoes for £1.29. Spaghetti is dirt cheap in Tescos too. Ketchup. Also Eggs. Bread. Also they have 85p ready meals for some flavour. And a pack of Vanilla Donuts last days if you store them right. Hit up food banks..and sometimes local communty walk in groups do food cabinets for cheap or free. Lots of experience living on nothing. Cheese is cheap at tescos and goes well in a lot of stuff...also lettuce is cheap. Can last a week on that easily.

  • @davidsworld5837
    @davidsworld5837 3 місяці тому +22

Although you can buy some cheap things in HB. It is NOT the cheapest place to get cheap version of foods. For EG.
bean 59p but can just get a tin for 28p for 410g . 39p for oat bust when just pay 90p for a full 1 KG bag of oats.
carrots 65p are 33p in aldi. would not get the Pizza for £1.49 since you can get bigger ones cheaper under a £1. tomatoes 55p Aldi 28p.
Yes the cheese items are good price, the grated for £1.39
If all you can do is last 3 days for £10 then you are not trying I can and have too do far better than that.
I am on UC. and have like £20 a week to buy all food and kitchen etc items with.
So £3.33 a day that you did is far too much for 1 person.

    • @aaronb7949
      @aaronb7949 3 місяці тому +1

£20 a week? Assuming you're living in social housing so no rent or council tax to worry about you get £369 a month for food and bills. Let's say your gas/electric/water was £200 month which for a single person seem reasonable, you'd be left with £169, even if you factored in phone/tv/broadband you can get decent packages for £30 a month - £139 left, more than £20 a week for food and kitchen items, no? Unless you waste money on luxuries such as alcohol, tobacco, drugs etc you should have more than that to live on. That said you're bang on about it not being the cheapest place for all items and how he thought half a tin of beans for 59p was a bargain was beyond me :D

Also buy celery and put in a tall glass, vase or similar with a little water and the tops keep growing... Eat the sticks on their own (snack), chop up to add to salads, soup or even with beans on toast. Celery can be roasted, grilled for chared crunch'! The green leaves act as a nice garnish to most meals from curries to cheese on toast etc. One or two bunches easily last a week on the window ledge... 😊👍

Genuinely you can do a shop at Lidl, look for reduced items and buy very basic things, own branded of course. Example a full tin of beans (your Branston tin was half a tin) is something like 26p. I'm also unemployed but even when I was making a very good salary, I'd still shop like that. Always check out the reduced stuff - the use by dates are a con - especially if you freeze/refrigerate things and at Aldi they often have 75% reductions!

Defo shop around because Home Bargains isn't the cheapest for everything but you can definitely get by really well on just a few basic cheap food stuffs. Pasta (i get the GF stuff from Asda and it's still not that expensive), rice, lentils, eggs, chopped toms and whatever veg is abundant and cheap this season, will serve you really well. Use cheese sparingly, like the luxury it is these days and buy frozen fruit & veg for wizzing up smoothies for breakfast. That's a whole lot of nutrients for not a lot of money. Also - it's wild garlic season right now (March) get out there (do your research first obvs) and wizz a load up with oil, portion off with ice cube trays and bung them in a bag in the freezer and you have oil & garlic to start off any recipe.

First time viewer and i have to say i loved your video. However, as someone who's recently been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes i recently went on a nutrition course and my only worry with what you've been eating is the ultra processed foods aren't healthy for you.
However, love your personality, love your kindness with the links so I've subscribed and passed your video on to a couple of people

Sorry to hear it - with a lot of shops shutting, there is a structural change in how people find work. Get a part time job for 16hr and top up with benefits, that will keep your head above water. Use food banks, and access all the entitlements.

    • @keithparker1346
      @keithparker1346 3 місяці тому

If you do any work now you will have your benefit reduced by 55p for every £1 you earn. It's called a taper , it's shit, it applies to universal credit but there's a drive to get all benefits switched to uc....so the part time job suggestion is only partly a good idea

You can live off just £5 a week in food in the short term if you have to, it wouldn't be fun, but you would live. Some people are even more savvy than that and could go even lower. You can buy 4 loaves of bread and a tub of butter spread and that would give you the calories you need and you wouldn't go hungry.
I did an experiment myself and found that I could easily live off £15 of food for more than a week, there wasn't much protein, but vegetables are cheap, filling and tasty.

as someone also unemployed living on a tight budget let me suggest Tesco:
    70p 4 baking potatoes
£1 Two sachets of instant mash
    89P cucumber
    75P Tin Tuna
    85p Medium Loaf
    1.40 pack of 8 tortillas
£3 Fajita mix (chicken and veg, one pack makes all 8 tortillas)
    3x 47p Spag Hoops
Exactly a tenner, 2x jacket potatoe meals with 2 potatoes each time with hoops, 2 x 4 fajitas each time, 2-3 tuna and cucumber sandwiches with extra cucumber to add to fajitas, 2 mash and hoops dinners and it comes out to exactly a tenner, thats 11 potential meals, for a tenner, so maybe u can stretch that video to FOUR DAYS!

I've done this challenge and it was easy...
    Lentils 0.49p lasts 3 days.
    Bread 85p
    Potatoes 1.30p
    X4 tins beans 1.49
    Carrots 0.59p
    Mushrooms 0.79p
    Eggs 1.20 for a dozen
    Cheese 1.79 a bag
    Stock cubes 79p
    Big Tin of corn 42p
    Tin tomatoes 25p
    Total is £9.96
    You can make the following:
    1.Cheese toasties
    2.Beans on toast
    3.Lentil broth
4.Potatoes and carrot soup (add stock cube and some Lentils.
    5. Mushroom omelette
    6. Tomatoes on toast.
    7. Cheesy potatoes with corn.
    8. Chip butties (and egg)
    9. Lentil and mushroom patties.
    10. Fritters with corn.
    11. Cheesy scrambled egg
    12. French toast with with side of Mushrooms and rest of tomatoes.
There you go......... People need to stop filling up their baskets and spending money on food that they don't eat. Budget shopping is easy and all you need to be is more creative.
The food above can last, and £10 can stretch..... If people stopped buying £7 coffees and junk food, budgeted wisely, and prepared proper food then they would realise that anything is possible.
The elderly had to ration and didn't even have the ingredients above. People today waste their money and cry victimhood.
I've had to use this method above to survive, and managed because I had no choice..... But when you have people that want luxury and who are greedy, then they'll always find an excuse not to buy frugally or cook food that lasts....

The tragic part of a cheap food shop is that convenience foods (e.g. instant noodles) have to take priority over fruit and veg. The things we desperately need, to stay healthy, are cost prohibitive for people struggling to live.
