- Split Second Velocity was hugely unappreciated in its time. If you ask anyone who’s played it though, they’ll tell you just how awesome it is. The reviews back in 2010 also tell a story of a slick arcade racing game that delivered incredible thrills.
So what happened? We’re those original reviews paid for and is everyone simply remembering it through rose coloured glasses? And if it is as good as everyone says, why didn’t it sell?
This review of the game covers all the typical things a review should, such as gameplay, presentation and performance as well as recommending what the best way to play it in 2021 is. It also explains why it didn’t sell and why we're likely to never see a Split Second 2.
Most importantly this review is a reminder to all arcade racing game fans, don’t forget Split Second Velocity!

I see people are slowly starting to remember this game, maybe if enough people talk about it we might get a sequel.

I still play this game today. One of my favorite and am still disappointed in Disney's decision to shut the studio down. The ending left on a cliffhanger and can only imagine what a sequel today could bring.
There was so many different directions they could have gone with the sequels. Based on interviews with Black Rock they were gearing up to make loads of other games. Very disappointing.
Even Blackrock's Pure was amazing. I kept my ps3 only for these 2 games.
@KenCohenDesigns I dont remember playing Pure, although I played a random assortment of ATV games. Checking out some gameplay, and it looks insanely fun and vaguely familiar(could be other atv games I'm remembering.) Sadly, I don't have a ps3 to play it. I just checked out PS5's store, and it wasn't available. It's a shame to just leave these to history and not expand on them.

The adrenaline rush in this game was insane... I loved it so much.
I played this gem on my PS3 a while back, it was amazing! It's a shame that a sequel/prequel set in the early 80's for this game was cancelled.

Played this game on Xbox 360, and PlayStation. It's an awesome game even when compared to today's racers. It's all action, not really simulation, but it's greatness.
Oh yeah. It’s about as far from sim racing as possible.

Split/Second is so good that not even people who made it, know how to make it again.
I bet it's like back for blood where only 2 of the original devs that worked for left for dead

On my PS3, the only screen tearing was the glitch effects for the power plays. Other than that, the game runs like bread and butter.
I’m aware I said 627 instead of 672... bloody dyslexia! I also didn't cover the iOS version of the game because it's no longer available. It looks terrible though so I don't think it's a great loss.

1:45 there still is an online multiplayer for console! if you play on PC, people use LAN programs like Radmin to still play online. Great video, you did a solid amount of research, there's some tiny corrections that I would give but it's often stuff that would take some digging to find out (like the fact that the game lies to you, the GT12 isn't the fastest car in the game). Very good video, thanks for casting light on my favorite game of all time :)
What is the fastest car if it isn't the GT12? It's not miles faster in terms of top speed but its acceleration is nuts!
@@goukigod The Ryback Firestorm is faster overall, it keeps speed up way better in the corners. The GT12 has crazy accel but it has to slow down too much in corners, also its fragility certainly doesn't help either. The Firestorm wants to be drifted almost constantly, it's a hard car to drive but immensely fun once you've got a feel for it.
I went bat shit crazy about this game and couldn't belive at that time a racing game with environmental changes existed. Asphalt tried to do this in its Asphalt 9 race tracks, but SSV did it first and way back. I'm sure few of the developer individuals from SsV had something to do with it :)
It reminds me a little of the motorstorm series too.

It's still one of my favourite & I still enjoy playing it with my friend in the split screen mode.. I wish the online multiplayer was there 💔

This game is a staple of my teenage years. I didn't play it back when it launched because I was just a little 10-year-old who owned neither an Xbox nor a PS3. But I won a 360 in a raffle at school in 2016, and Split/Second was the first game I got for it. It's not only a spectacle to watch with all the explosions and destruction and whatnot, it controls like a dream as well! Every power slide I pulled off felt dynamic and satisfying. Reaching top speed even on the slowest cars felt like going warp speed! The whole game was, by all accounts, a blood curdling action movie you could drive through.
Back when i was a kid, i downloaded the psp demo off of the store since i couldn't afford the full game, and i played the same race almost everyday for months on end. I just fixed my old psp not too long ago, and got split second for it, it's just as good as i remember, and the full game is amazing. I can only imagine playing this today, with forza level graphics on a racing sim set up.

Only recently remembered this game and immediately went and bought it on Steam and for me it still holds up!
Am i the only one who think this game still looks beautiful graphically speaking, despite its age and fun fact the Ryback firestorm could possibly be the fastest car in the game assuming your good at drifting.

Me and my brother did the same at a manor whenever my mother had to go buy some stuff.
She went to some shops and instead of having to walk around the city we could play this game. Got a copy of it a bit later on.

Example: at the Airport track, when using a Lv2 PP to topple an ATC Tower, it'd start off like normal, but after only a second or 2, it's suddenly on the ground already.

Im really happy to see another great review on this game, i hope these sorta videos bring newer and older players back to the game. Ps3 and xbox still have online capabilities and theres a PLan for pc players :)
I play this on ps3 multiplayer till this very day. I'm a truck driver and this game makes sense, ahead of it's time.

Super underrated game and super unlucky release date as well. I genuinely think it could have been a worthy competitor to games like NFS.
Love the Xbox Series X/S version loading times are nonexistent because of the SSD plus there are always full public lobbies going on no matter what time of day/night not to mention the private lobbies too this also goes for the Xbox One & Xbox 360 console, graphics still look beautiful to this day, what a game!
Good to hear it’s still possible to find lobbies. Would be curious to know if playing it in 60FPS on Xbox series X/S has any negative impact like it does on PC.

As much as I understand that Split/Second on the PSP is very different from the PC/XBOX/PS3 port, my brothers actually discovered Split/Second through PSP. So it was surprising what split/second actually looked like on PC. *chefs kiss on the graphics!
A split second renaissance, if were lucky, some random popular streamer, or heck someone in the movie industry who knows split/second could make a movie, and finally get the darn sequel!

I think there is a spiritual successor, called CloseCall, and is currently in development

Since this is a DISNEY game, imagine if Disney's (And Pixar too) all star characters like Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy, Snow White, Cinderella, Elsa, Mulan, Moana, Peter Pan, Sulley, Lightning McQueen, Hiro Hamada, Ralph, Vanellope, Sora (Yes, i will include Kingdom Hearts chars too), Star Butterfly, Anne Boonchuy, Molly McGee, Luz Noceda, Amity Blight (YES, also include The Owl House), etc. are invited to participate in this amazingly destructive Reality TV show, and see their reactions to when they supposedly use Magic and Techniques to slow each other down, instead they are treated with an On-Sight Plane crashing, Observation tower tumbling over, Freight Train and Bridge exploding, Cruise Ferry crashing on Shore, Helicopters shooting Missiles, Semi-Trucks dropping bom-barrels, Dam collapsing, etc!
The ONLY criticism i have is that this game doesn't have NITROUS BOOST. Also this game is basically Real Life Slaughter Race (Which is a fictional parody mashup of GTA and this very game (Along with Twisted Metal) in the 2018 atrocious sequel movie Ralph Breaks The Internet)

There’s a brand new PC 60fps fix and the DLC has been ported across from console. The game now work’s incredibly 30 fps just hurt :( greatest and most fun 2 player split screen racer ever. ❤❤❤

2021: I just bought two used PS3s to play it again. This time with my son. I never ever had so much fun playing a game again!
I never played it back in the day but it must have been incredible because it holds up so well.

Just a note on the series consoles definitely do not play this at 60fps or 4k. Its still 30fps and 720p. Unfortunately the game was never enhanced for xbox one x or the series consoles.

I remember the release, I bought both Blur and Split Second. Both games failed as (among other things) they both cannibalized each others' sales.
The psp version is pretty decent tbh with you it's basically split second on a ps2 portable lol and do you know that there is exclusive tracks and modes in the psp version?

The Xbox Live servers aren’t down yet and people do still play online. If you want to win online though, you better complete the season with every event in first. The final car you unlock, the Ryback Firestorm, is one of the only cars that accelerates as you drift, and it is unironically the fastest car in the game if you can sustain drifts

It's a shame the timing of this release was so bad. They would've had to pour 90% of their budget into out marketing Forza and NFS. I just discovered this game in 2023 and I'm blown away by how good it is.
I think even with a massive marketing budget it would have been hard for a new IP to compete with the big franchises.

I remember playing this online ... And many people were saying stuff like ' This is too hard '. I think maybe that is why it ' failed ' to make big money.
I've heard that sentiment echoed in plenty of reviews too. I agree that about halfway through, the difficulty spikes, but once you overcome it it's an immensely rewarding racer!

A sequel is really badly needed. Imagine it having artificial weather alterations like heavy windstorms or even an earthquake from explosives, and more biomes to break like rainforests...
It would be incredible for sure. Dynamic weather, more destructible environments, more detailed car damage models, larger more elaborate tracks, more cars on the track etc etc

I still haven't played Blur. It's not super cheap, at least in Pal regions but I might just have to stop being a tight-ass!
I think both Burnout Revenge and Dominator are hugely under appreciated. Takedown is always the top of everyones list but I think those games offer a more refined experience.

You're in luck, there is. Detonation Racing was released to Apple Arcade and was developed by some of the same people of Split/Second. And somehow, idiots who seen game footage and the trailer call it a Split/Second rip off despite the fact it was done by the same developers. Talk about humble pie.
Also, I did kinda do a review on this game for my show The Uncanny Gamer, even it's PSP and J2ME ports, but they were poorly made. I might do a proper review of the game once I make a new channel strictly for reviews.

Played both splitt second and hot pursuit and ss was a lot better imo
very different games though. I haven't played Hot Pursuit properly in ages but played it to death back in the day.
