One of the saddest moments of my gaming career was the cliffhanger ending in this game and then never getting a sequel. It's a shame this game didn't sell well, because in my opinion, Split/Second is the greatest racing game of all time. Here are a few reasons: it was something fresh. It didn't feel like something we've played before, eventhough it was a simple concept. The survival mode was absolutely exhilarating, especially when playing local co-op. Most of the fun I had with this game was playing locally with friends/family. The graphics were 5 years ahead of its time. Absolutely gorgeous visuals. And the soundtrack.. I repeat, THE SOUNDTRACK! To this day I still believe Split/Second arguably has the greatest OST of all time. The theme for the elite races was especially captivating. I'm almost shedding a tear after remembering this amazing game will never get a sequel, but at least we have this hidden gem to fallback on and remember the good times. This game really did deserve better. So did Blackrock studios and the amazing team that made this game.
I’m of the same opinion. When I finished the game and found out the sequel had been canceled, I couldn’t stop crying. You might think I was overreacting, but I really wasn’t. I found it on UA-cam when I was around 6 or 7 years old, maybe even younger, and instantly fell in love with it. i liked the game but the difficulty man, what is that, the AI Rubberband is just something else, the soundtrack is very epic, NFS The Run also has a nice OST
Why have I never heard of this game until now? Also in regards to that concept art for the sequel perhaps it was actually going to be a Prequel to the first game since it shows a very 70's/80's inspired backdrop to the race. After all in the ending cutscene to Split Second, when the enemy faction makes it's entrance, you hear the announcer say and I quote, "But they got taken off air in '82!".
Dude, go get it. It's a hidden gem of the last console generation. I'd recommend against getting the PC version though: It ended up being a fairly sub-par port with some significant technical problems, which obviously never got patched.

I still have my copy of the game when it first got released and still do play it from time to time as it could offer something other arcade racers didn't (at the time at least). Intense arcade racing action without the reliance of boost. Which definitely arcs back to the older days of 90s arcade racers where it was just you, against some competitive AI racers on very detailed and sometimes imaginative courses, no boosts required. I still do remember the first time I got to the end of the game after going through every single event trying to nab a gold medal in it. Young me was pretty excited, up until later that year I went and search for news about it and then realizing that the game was cancelled and the studio was shut down. It is pretty weird though how two arcade racers that were released that year was what lead to companies being shut down. The other one being Blur. Side note, and just to mention it, but I feel like this is what inspired that whole racing segment in the movie Ready Player One.

Pretty sure you meant to say "installment" rather than "installation" early in the video. In any case one point not touched in the video is that there was a period that, for a number of reasons, was bad for these arcade racers. Two notable games in this genre, including Split Second and Activision's own Blur, failed to meet expectations. Just a few months later Motorstorm Apocalypse, in some aspects similar to Split Second, also failed to meet expectations (though greatly impacted by the earthquake in Japan at the time, due to its theme, which also delayed its release). Two of those led to the closure of its developers right away. For perspective as well the bulk of Disney Interactive's output at the time were games from their properties such as Hanna Montana, Cheetah Girls, and Sing It!, hardly games that could be considered successes. In many ways Disney Interactive shot itself in the foot as a result of this. For every Pure or Split Second there were dozens of High School Musical or Jonas games. From time to time there was a licensed property game for a Toy Story or Cars movie that offered a solid, if uninspired, gameplay, but also games like the Epic Mickey games which received plenty of promotion and support, and were more expensive productions than their norm, but failed to live up to expectations specially compared to contemporaries. Ultimately this was a combination of factors that made the game fail, but bad management that led DI to panic and change course without truly assessing where the strengths of their portfolio were. .

Disney Games only have themselves to blame for this game’s unfortunate failure. seeing that RDR was launching the same week as S/S, they could have postponed the release date a couple of weeks or even months, not even to mention that they could have advertised it a lot more than they did. I believe this could have been a very happy franchise
This was the first video game I was ever really excited for. I saw the online marketing and kept up to date with everything leading up to its release, where my best friend and I were some of the first to pick up the game. It was one of the most fun gameplay exeperiences I’ve ever had and I’ve been looking for one like it ever since.
Split second 2 would have been better if it were released. The game that released was a unique game being able to cause mass destruction in the middle of a race changing the track layout in the process.
Great video as always. Spilt Second is still one of my favorite games of all time. It's just a game you can play for hours and never get bored. I even had the launch edition with the car model included.
Split Second didn't suceed with release, but I think almost anyone who played it fell in love with it since it was so different. It had arcade controls, but was precise enough to have a chance to avoid obstacles, and the whole presentation of it is very representative of TV and movies at the time in terms of music, introductions, etc. Besides, what schoolboy doesn't love cars being paired with over-the-top destruction?
*For me, SPLIT SECOND, was and always will be, one of the BEST racing game ever made.* *It's like if MICHAEL BAY and FAST & FURIOUS were married and had a baby > SPLIT SECOND.* *It was a shame, and very sad to learn that there may never been any sequel of the beloved game "Split Second", but I want to believe that nothing is lost and that one day, a descent episode 2 will come out....let's pray it happen.* *Thanks for your video Bright Sun Films, I know exactly what you feel about the cancelled sequel project of Split Second, as for many huge fans, this was a masterpiece which deserve a descent sequel of it's own*
This game is a stupidly awesome amount of fun with all the high-energy explosions and track changes. It's truly a guilty pleasure to play, so it's sad the sequel got crushed and never stood a chance. Would have been great to see even more from them!
Split Second is so underrated! The opposite of your experience, the game came out when I was starting to lose interest in video games, I was really missing older arcade style racers and this game really pulled me back in, it was exactly what I’d been missing. Wish there was a sequel!
So the guys from Black Rock went on to create Hangar 13. They made Mafia 3, good game but was rushed by 2k games. Hangar 13 had to go under restructuring because of it and now some employees are at another 2k studio developing the next BioShock game (code name: “Parkside”).
Great piece. Split Second on top of being an underrated racing game, also had phenomenal music to back it. Was upset when I learned that Disney shuttered the development of a follow up. Maybe someday someone will pick up the IP or give us the sequel.
I found the story to be interesting. The producer saying "I thought they were canned in 82?" When referring to the people hijacking the show. And when seeing the concept art for the second game, and it taking place in the 70's or 80's is what I thought could have been a interesting story. Like the story being about the predecessor to the present version of Split Second after being canned are now seeing the success of a show with the same name and premise (possibly the rights for their original show was rebooted against their wishes). They then plan to take over the show. But the twist could have been that the original Split Second from the 80's taking over the present Split Second was all scripted, and was just a way to get people interested in the original lesser known version of the show. They way the producer was giving his lines a bit more cringingly was because it was all an act.
Fuck running cash registers when I saw this vid I clicked on it. Split second was one of the best games I've ever played. I never knew there was going to be a second one
Ohh man, you’re opening up a can of worms by taking on a video game episode of cancelled! Haha, great video, as always! Wouldn’t mind a few more on this topic either (games). Cheers!
I am assuming the concept art is depicting 1982. At 5:18 the voice says "I thought they were taken off the air in '82." So this might be part of the story on how and why they are back.
I was like 8 when I first got my hands on Split/Second. It was the first racing game I had ever played and it was amazing. It made me think that it was superior to every other racing game just due to the fact it had explosions. Now here I am, devastated with the fact we’ll never get to play something like it again.
I have a REALLY good idea for a series you could start!!! Haunted. Where you talk about locations what are rumored or are "proven" to be haunted. Like talk about the spooky/scary stuff people have experienced from explorers and (If possible) from past employees or guests. Maybe go there and try and film stuff for yourself or use other UA-camrs videos, articles from the web. Don't try and debunk anything but talk about the spooky past of the locations. Like Deaths, Experiences, and videos/audio from said location. Id watch the HELL out of that!!! Like maybe make them longer videos. I know you can probably talk about some SUPER famous/popular locations galore!! This would also give you reasons to travel to some of the "Most Haunted Cities" in the US and Canada. LIke: NOTE THESE ARE FROM A LIST I FOUND ONLINE. The only one i really know of being haunted is Savannah, GA. Savannah, GA Baltimore, MA Portland, Ore Washington, D.C.
Hey Jake, I rarely leave UA-cam comments, but I feel this would be right up your alley. Spi-Ops was one of my favorite PS2 games and I would love to see a Cancelled episode to find the answers. I love watching your videos, and please keep up the great wok!
The demo 360 at my local(-ish) Wally's had the red ring of death. When I pointed this out to the kid working the electronics counter, he said with an absolutely straight face, "It's a demo unit. It's there to show what the product does."

5:38 I got an ad EXACTLY when the wrecking ball hit the camera.
Could you do a Cancelled on Hooters Air?
Hooter's Air was covered.
I know Business Insider did a video on it, But Kinda want to see Jake do a video on it.
@@AlexSpalex1 that must be the one I'm thinking of too... I swore it was Jake 😅.
TI T......
I loved this game. If it was remastered I would totally get it again.
No remasters needed, the graphics aged like fine wine. What we need is a sequel, which is literally impossible once it is 12 years old…
Split second 2 would have been better if it were released. The game that released was a unique game being able to cause mass destruction in the middle of a race changing the track layout in the process.
Disney ruins everything! They ruined Star Wars, and cancelled so many sick games like this one
*For me, SPLIT SECOND, was and always will be, one of the BEST racing game ever made.*
*It's like if MICHAEL BAY and FAST & FURIOUS were married and had a baby > SPLIT SECOND.*
*It was a shame, and very sad to learn that there may never been any sequel of the beloved game "Split Second", but I want to believe that nothing is lost and that one day, a descent episode 2 will come out....let's pray it happen.*
*Thanks for your video Bright Sun Films, I know exactly what you feel about the cancelled sequel project of Split Second, as for many huge fans, this was a masterpiece which deserve a descent sequel of it's own*
I STILL PLAY THIS GAME ON PS3. RIP SPLIT SECOND
Blur and Split Second are without a doubt the most underrated racing games of all time
This game is a stupidly awesome amount of fun with all the high-energy explosions and track changes.
Its a shame what happened to Mafia III, I really need to sit down and finish playing it sometime.
Trust me, it’s worth it
How much in losses? $800 Million? It's hard to blame Disney interactive for making hard choices to cut projects.
This game and Blur deserved better.
Split second 2 was supposed to be even bigger game than the original adding on foot sections just like Blur 2
This was one of the most underrated slept on racing games
Nice job on this episode and series as a whole!
Never even heard of this underrated game before until you introduced this episode!
Fuck running cash registers when I saw this vid I clicked on it. Split second was one of the best games I've ever played. I never knew there was going to be a second one
dude holy crap i had no idea they had plans to make a second one the first one is my life
Disney pulled an EA move with this game.
Ohh man, you’re opening up a can of worms by taking on a video game episode of cancelled! Haha, great video, as always! Wouldn’t mind a few more on this topic either (games). Cheers!
PLEASE PLEASE DO THE RACING GAME BLUR! It was truly an amazing game
I am assuming the concept art is depicting 1982. At 5:18 the voice says "I thought they were taken off the air in '82." So this might be part of the story on how and why they are back.
Thankyou Jake for the awesome content!
Split/Second is one of the best arcade racing games ever and still a fantastic game to play now days.
Flip your Xbox right-side up, my dude.
I was like 8 when I first got my hands on Split/Second. It was the first racing game I had ever played and it was amazing. It made me think that it was superior to every other racing game just due to the fact it had explosions. Now here I am, devastated with the fact we’ll never get to play something like it again.
What if you did "Abandoned - Texas World Speedway"?
Or Riverside Int'l Raceway? :D
@@hotel_arcadia Well they tore that track apart, so it's not really abandoned. lol
@@carterfriesen8583 Well that's true lol
This, blue and midnight club were really amazing games and it's such a shame that all 3 franchises died :(
You said you went to Watkins Glen. The bi-yearly races held by NASCAR are pretty good.
Split Second had no story aside the ending cutscene, and it worked like a charm
Savannah, GA
Baltimore, MA
Portland, Ore
Washington, D.C.
@@fenharel6849 Yeah, imagine how many he could do and how much detail he could go into!
Good video, good work! Glad your branching out a bit as well!
This and a Blur sequel. Oh what could have been
did you mean Blur the racing game?
@@RK-zf1jm yes, came out in the Xbox / ps3 Era. It was like grand turismo meets Mario Kart
@@esodevulpes6435 you can edit your comment bro
Blur was disappointing in my eyes
I love it Jake! Keep up the good work. I'm glad you're uploading more frequently so that I get my BSF fix sooner!!
Yay a new video! I’m so happy now
I miss that game it was very fun , I'm sad that they are not going to make anything like it again.
Split Second was an amazing game :)
Thank you for sharing
I'm so incredibly proud of Jake, I've been here since 20k subs and he's only been getting better and better
Thanks so much Meg
OMG Loved this game, they had a potential winner on their hands! Can't wait to watch this video!
I remember this game! My buddy got a brand new xbox 360 back in the day and we played the hell out of it. Man Jake, you're bringing back memories
Damn I remember Split Second! Looks like I gotta dig out my Xbox 360 games...
Hey Jake, I rarely leave UA-cam comments, but I feel this would be right up your alley. Back in 2004 there was a PS2 game called "Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy" which also ended with a "TO ME CONTINUED" at the very end. Spi-Ops was one of my favorite PS2 games and I would love to see a Cancelled episode to find the answers. I love watching your videos, and please keep up the great wok!
Split/Second was the first game I ever owned. God, I hope Hangar 13 revive the franchise.
Yes pleeeeeeeeasee!!!
Only game they made was Mafia 3 which got hammered for being poor to meh so dont hold out much hopes am affraid.
The demo 360 at my local(-ish) Wally's had the red ring of death. When I pointed this out to the kid working the electronics counter, he said with an absolutely straight face, "It's a demo unit. It's there to show what the product does."
*Nfs original Hotpursuit* ,

Split/Second is my favorite racing game of all time. I still play it with friends in split screen mode every now and then.
Now if only we could get Fornite cancelled...
Xomanxy for sure
Zayden Arney it was a. Joke dude chill out
you can cancel anything if you try hard enough
Man I loved the first game so much, the courses and the explosions and course changes and stuff you could cause was awesome. I remember when I first found out the second one was never gonna out I was pretty sad.
Wish this video came out last month when split/second was free with gold on the Xbox😂😂
