I play this game even today. I got ranked number 1 today which is the objective today and im so happy. I have been waiting for this review for over a year now.
My guess is it was too far a different direction than what people wanted or the marketing. To me its a real cars kart racer (at least that's how I see it and play it) and to me when I found out what it was about 1 year or a few months ago I thought it was brilliant. I've never been big on kart racers myself, going for more racing sims and arcade racers of different types to branch out, but with PGR's aspects with weapons and interesting track design/modes and challenges I think it was a fairly unique direction/different enough direction to felt interesting and wouldn't ever have been done before. I think just like PGR it carves it's own way/has it's own charm but isn't what a mainstream audience would care for or Activision's audience either.
It wasnt well marketed, also in that time the idea of "mario kart with real cars" was taken by most "gamers" like a joke. Even some reviewer was moking about the name "blur" if I can recall well.
Some of my fondest gaming memories are with Blur. 4 players on the same console, people willing to learn the game and some of the hardest fought races with alliances being made and broken in seconds. Some of the concepts are great and we haven't really saw them in other titles. The fact that you pick what power up you want and you can use all of them offensively or defensively was great and made for some great races. If the first player was too far ahead all the rest could just gang up on him but at the same time if he was good enough he could avoid everything they threw at him. Which is what I liked the most with it, instead of Mario Kart where if you win or lose is in most cases from pure luck.
Believe it or not, CRTs actually have better colour production and contrast ratios than the vast majority of LCD screens. The main reason they were phased out was because they were expensive to manufacture, hot and bulky. Some aspects of CRTs are STILL unrivaled even today in aspects such as ghosting, etc.
This is my favorite game of all time, there's litterally nothing with this game that I have a problem with, it's just so good. The only thing I would do to make it even greater than it already is, is to add every city that was in PGR1 & 2, that would be just amazing. And the fact that it still looks so good even after nearly 13 years of it being launched really says something.

This, this is the game of my childhood. I got it when it came out in 2007, and it still play it today on exactly the same 360. It makes me really sad to think that the IP is lost in legal limbo, or in the hands of someone who doesnt want to make another game. And honestly maybe thats for the better. 2007 was a different time, a different era.
It's my favourite racing game of all times. Played the crap out of it, especially in split screen 2 player mode. I think it had some mystical fun factor in it and something that made it so satisfying to drive and getting better and better over time. The graphics, sounds, handling, simplicity without being simple - all fit so well together.
As a teenager that race was horrible, now though, it's some of the most fun you can have in the game, take a bad handling car and take it to snowy Nurburgring, way too much fun.
I really hope Playground games looks at this gem. Having Motorbikes and Cars racing is the best. Some of the bikes in this game felt so fun to drive, hope they make a return
I doubt it most IP's that been on the shelf for so long and ignore by publisher by not being a high seller like their bigger ones. The closest you get to a new one is a small mission or mode of them saying "Hey remember that one game you like yeah here's a nostalgia trip"
On my original Xbox save I had at least 20+ days played on it with a total of 70 million kudos, I’m pretty sure it was the only game I played for a year.
The things that this game has that no others have are: - car sounds/volume based on imput controller, the V8 vantage has a variable exhaust system that opens up above 3k rpm. This is the only game that has it. I mean they went all in with car sounds… - a feeling of real/living environment. Yes, graphics are meh compared to what we have now. But the atmosphere, real echos, and the way that the car sound is programmed make it feel alive. Even Forza Horizon 5 doesn’t compete… not in a bit…

PGR4 was the best racer last generation, like Forza Horizon 4 is this generation. PGR4 still looks superb. It's a ten year old game that holds up extremely well and if there was ever an emulator or way to run the game at high resolutions and high frame rates I am convinced it would still hold up and look great against much more modern racing games.
Hands down, my favourite racing game of the Xbox 360 era. Bountiful track list, beautiful car sounds, dynamic weather, dedicated single player with genuinely competitive AI. So many features like Gotham TV, wheel cam, ranked multiplayer all ahead of their time. Handling was great, remember getting some #1 times using D-Pad. I was still playing this in 2017, tiny but fun loving player base at that point. Michelin Test Track remains a fav track, wish Forza had it. PGR4 had a brilliant bug whereby Platinum AI on Michelin Test Track were legit world class pace, very hard to beat. Aw yesss here it is. I think being a teen and having like, a rivalry against a named opponent in the career mode really was something else when it came down to the final race being a 1v1. You could also cheat the Kudo rewards system by buying certain things as you turn the console off to get some achievements for free. And then there was the jet powered bike. That one was scary because it doesn't stop accelerating at all and with the poor bike handling, it was probably the most frustrating to complete.
Am I crazy in thinking this graphically rivals even current gen games? Easily some of the best weather and lighting effects of any racing game ever. Blows me away now as much as it did in 2007.
And to think that rain wasn't added into Forza until FH2 in 2014 and snow until 2016 in FH3 with Blizzard Mountain, and that PGR4 had all of them is amazing.

I used to slay all my mates on every track with the aston not the fastest but i masterd it
this is why I keep my xbox 360 so I revisit this game twice a year, my best arcade game after forza horizon 1.
This is one of my absolute favourite racing games of all time alongside Forza Motorsport 4 from it's great graphics and awesome car list which includes favourites such as Ferrari Enzo Ferrari and Maserati MC12 the dlc was good as well and I still play it to this day and online also works great and I currently just completed the career mode once again with all dlc and vehicles unlocked it's sad to see what happened with Bizarre Creations later on
My favourite of the series is still the original on the Dreamcast, Metropolis Street Racing. MSR.
12:40 hay you did mention it.
Why?
@@benvids Not that guy but the way the timing worked out MSR on Dreamcast was the best looking racing game with the most sophisticated handling model on a console at the time as it would take a couple more years for Gran Turismo to make the leap to PS2.
one game away from bizzare creations' last game
Didn't they also made that James Bond game?
@@txcforever they did indeed
They made 5 or 6 games after this actually
@@Yodagamer1 Can't remember any others but James Bond Bloodstone and Blur were the one two punch that made Activision shut them down.
One of the best racing games of all time in my opinion! The online modes were just brilliant fun! My favourite being the Team cat and mouse or car tag! It didn’t have to be a serious racing game because you had fun either way
My Fav N 1 Arcade Racing game of All All time with B Revenge And GRIP. But PGR 4 is the perfection of control, fun, andrenaline n challenges. Sad that you didnt mention the Prototypes in this 4th installation ..... Maybe is just me. But i got crazy playng and perfection the courses with Prototipes here...... They are simply crazy monsters.
Man, I really want an original Xbox with some PGR.
I had so much fun with PGR 3 when I first got my 360 then when this came out, almost blew 3 out of the water. Both classic simcade racers that I am proud to still have in my collection!
I remember playing this game many moons ago, I fucking loved it
I miss this franchise
This was my go-to mature racer until Driveclub.
I Miss the Cat and Mouse mode. I spent hundreds of hours with friends playing that mode - such a good time with 4 player co-op multiplayer online
I remember comming home from school everyday and throwing this on and playing bulldog mode online with people. I must have done that everydau for about 2-3 years. I played this game through the entire time owning a 360. I wish he showed off the online in this review as the bulldog mode is fantastic, it's am open world hide and seek / infected mode all barrier removed from the maps, except for the borders of the boindrys of the maps. What a fun game. Love PGR4 ❤️❤️❤️❤️
i bought this the other day when you reviewed pgr3
im a big pgr2 fanboi and it was time to extend my nostalgia to the followups, so i dedusted my xbox 360 and bought pgr4 off ebay for 4 euros
Of all the racing games that we would all want a remaster/reboot of, PGR4 is probably the most wanted I'd imagine. Not to mention a PC port :)
Quebec City was amazing Canadian Content for a racing game. I grew up in the Montreal area and was holding out hope that they'd get to Montreal in Project Gotham Racing 5 (since it's a city with a lot of elevation changes and a large "mountain" park in the middle, plus bridges and the Formula 1 circuit on Ile Notre Dame), but, alas, they stopped at PGR 4.
Hell yeah ColourShed is back
I played the shit out of PGR 3 and 4 when I was a kid, loved it back then, still love it. I still have physical copies of both games, I remember I played it with the old 360 steering wheel, good times!
Great review as always
If theres a guy i watch to know if a game is good or not you’re the guy to come too I’m also Aussie so that helps.
Oh and if you’re ever wanting some good story games to review… The Walking Dead games by Telltale are probably some of the best storytelling games ever
Yes finally my favorite racing video game.
Oh, the warmth in my heart.
i remember setting all the ai into bikes and driving the wrong way round the new york circuit with the two long straights to knock the riders off as a kid
Multiplayer Bulldog mode was a lot of fun.
Could you please review "Blur" some day? One hell of a game. EDIT: Spoke too soon, you did mention this.. Good.
There was so many little things that made the game amazing even the different speedometers for all the cars!
Yeah i loved this game back in the day . graphics were just wow and the control of the car . great game
i soooooo LOVE this series, wish they brought it Back.
I hope i can play this on the series X, still angry they didn't make this series backwards compatible.
