I have a DRINKING PROBLEM in Thailand

  • An introspective reflection on drinking behaviours in Pattaya, Thailand. I take myself to Bangkok Thailand to visit Keis One for a week of detox and sobriety and use the time to examine my personal REASONS for drinking. It being inextricably entwined with tourism in Pattaya Thailand, as well as being heavily engrained within Thai culture makes it a fascinating discussion topic. I'm sharing my own thoughts and behaviours that may have no relevance to some and may assist others 🙏🏻 Please be aware that some folks who watch this channel and may read the comments have been through harrowing traumas which have lead to AOD use and accordingly tread very lightly if you choose to make comment.

After seeing my father struggle with alcohol when I was young, (he would come home from work, crack a beer and have a six pack at minimum every night), I swore I would never do this! I’m 60 yrs old now and have never done it….but….I have, and still do, love drinking beers with my mates and can get very carried away with it but I still never drink alone! I am a social drinker only!

The first thing is admitting to yourself you have a drink problem, and the next step is having the willpower to do something to get you away from the mental dependency on alcohol . Well done for starting on the abstence road for a few days and identifying the reasons you crave a beer or two.
Its restructuring your lifestyle will help.
I walk nearly every morning, 12k, and feel better in myself after losing 17 kilo in 18 months
As an aside my brother was an alcoholic from drinking every night from being a teenager. Sadly he died on April 8th 2024 as result of alcoholism.
I feel for some of the young staff working in the bars drinking everyday and night and what the end result will be in years to come .
Great input, Sam, on this video. I look forward to the next one.

I haven’t had a drink since last February. Every time I go to Thailand I will drink until 4-5am just about every night. I won’t be doing that again. Discipline for when I retire in Pattaya.

Well done. I've just quit the booze at the same time as doing Intimentine Fasting. 16/8. A good habit to get into. Losing weight and trying to look after future self. Good luck, and I love your videos. Keep it up. Looking to join the SEA nomad lifestyle soon.

Well done. Genuinely fascinating for me as I do not like drinking during the day but come evening time I start and will not stop until I fall asleep. Fortunately over the last 2 years I have been doing the 16-8 fasting routine for 4-5 days of the week. This gives me the discipline to not drink for these evenings which is somehow easy for me to stick to and I have the reward of being able to drink at the weekend. I am 65 now and I do wish that we had been warned that persistent drinking for years destroys the entire body and not just the liver....

Hi Sam. Good honest video on a realistic issue. I too was a drinker after having had my first drink at 13. I got to a point, in my mid 30’s, where simultaneously hating the hangovers, I was unable to sleep the hangover away. So I got fed up with drinking (much like you are doing right now), moved to a different location and started doing all the activities that you are doing (albeit in Northern Illinois, not Thailand. The beaches in Illinois are not quite as good as Thailand! 😊 ). You’ll find that you don’t miss drinking so much and that life has so much more meaning. Best of luck to you Sam!

Great video, mate. There are a lot of similarities, and I agree with what you have said. I used to do something similar for precisely the same reasons. I find what works for me is allowing 1- 2 days a week to have ANY alcohol. I also have trained myself that on alcohol-free days, it's one meal a day-healthy foods only. The 1 -2 days I drink, my diet can be whatever I want-as many meals as I want. Doing what I do, I am not hungry. Crave good, healthy food for my one meal. Starting to savour the feeling of waking with a clear head. The day I drink, I am starting to think of my alcohol-free days approaching and making plans to be productive on those days. The result. My health has improved. Anxiety has gone. My blood pressure is spot on. I manage my weight. My company productivity is peaking. I am getting significant figures at the end of each month.

Great video and amazing honesty from you again. Eating dinner early and filling up is good for your health too. Another thing that's important too, is the kind of people, that you surround yourself with. Keis is a great friend to have and I know in time you can find more people like him. Keep strong and keep up the great ideas for your channel! Discipline & balance!

First off, love your channel and I appreciate you sharing your story with us. Now, I hope this helps, after Covid I developed a terrible drinking problem to the point that for 3 years I drank 4-6 drinks a day almost every single day, and I know the feeling of being stuck in a habitual routine of needing that drink after work to set into your evening and the anxiety that comes with it all too well. I knew I needed to make a change, so what I did was get my ass back in the gym, and now I drink maybe once or twice a month if I'm going out, sometimes more, I still love to drink. The rest of the time I'm focused on reaching my fitness goals and improving as a day trader, nothing will take your mind away from bad habits like the desire to get in the best shape of your life and career goal. Personally I knew it wasn't motivation that I lacked, but rather discipline, and as a 36 year old I want to make sure I go into my 40's maintaining my youth rather than start getting old haha. You got this bro!!! Get in the gym man, I promise if you work toward those abbs you won't have time to think about drinking. Also I'm hoping to be in Pattaya by years end, I would love to say hi and share a drink if I saw you!

I suspect there are quite a lot of us who have been lucky enough, (and I chose "lucky" deliberately) to have faced similar introspection and have not allowed AOD to take over. I say lucky because given enough time and a turn or two of circumstances, anyone can lose that battle. Bravo to those who have succeeded and/or are working to keep AOD from controlling their lives and much strength to those currently fighting that battle or working just to start.

The lesson I learned over the years is to never crack a beer on an empty stomach, I set meal times to maintain daily routine. Then when I feel like throwing a steak on the grill I'll have a beer with it. I never want to have anymore beers after I'm full, so that little hack works for me.

Now i just have a couple of shots of vodka a day after work (not social) and thats all .... and i take medical weed which makes it easier not to drink .... all for medicinal reasons ...lol
    No more peer group pressure

Awesome video mate. The question is why do you drink? Are you a habitual person and follow a routine with it? Or you like the thought of something to look forward to as a reward at 5pm? Or is it purely for the buzz of alcohol? Keisy is right. Replace the beer with something else. If its the buzz of alcohol though then building in AF days every week is the answer.
At a young age your tolerance for alcohol will mean you need more of it to feel the same as you get older. The last thing we want is for another member of the Pattaya Flyers Club. Take care mate.

Avoid beers if possible. You are still young . I'm 50 and I drink once every 2 weeks. Why? Because my knee hurts badly until limping everytime I drink beers. so now I avoid drinking or suffer the consequences 😁
I used to drink on empty stomach too because you get the buzz faster with an empty stomach but after years of doing it, the side effects comes to haunt you.

1 alcoholic beverage a day is enough to start withdrawal symptoms (usually mild headaches). Alcohol withdrawal is not a pretty way to go. My dad died from severe withdrawal. He went to the hospital after falling and had no access to alcohol. 1 day away from alcohol triggered withdrawal symptoms, and every day it got worse until he passed.
Yet alcohol is the most socially acceptable drug.

How do we know where the center is, if we don't know where the edges are? It is good to take breaks to assess. The energy has to go somewhere. Substitute good habits for bad. Try meditation, yoga, gym, etc. I've practiced tai chi daily for over 25yrs in addition to those. Find a healthy method for mind, body and spirit and stick with it. Personally I find that if i don't have a beer, i am not quite in synch with the SEA culture. Something seems off. And i very rarely get drunk on the beers there. They are so weak compared to beer in USA. The key is awareness of what is being consumed and having a centered mind. We are multidimensional, creative entities inhabiting a physical mechanism. Don't let a liquid in a can or bottle hijack your life. Count your blessings.
