How to Make Creamy Oat Milk Like Oatly

  • Oat milk has made it into the main stream just recently partly due to a company called Oatly. They are a Swedish company that started making oat milk in the 90s. Oat milk is incredibly nutritious and is a perfect alternative for milk. Another benefit of oat milk is that it is incredibly easy and affordable to make. This recipe is great to use just like other plant milks but this milk can also be used in your frother for coffee or tea!

My favorite oat milk recipe, It tastes better to me than the Oatly brand. The oil in Oatly’s ingredients is what made me look for a homemade recipe. I love how thick and creamy it is. I use Bob’s Redmill’s Organic GF Rolled oats. When I use cold water and only blend for 25-30 secs it comes out perfect for me, it’s never slimy. I make this recipe every 4-5 days depending on how much I use in my coffee during week. As a creamer I simmer (get it real hot but not boiling) a 1/2 cup or 3/4 cup of the oat milk with a little cayenne, orange zest, cinnamon, turmeric and a date. I blend it on high and it becomes the best oat milk latte ever!

My former mother in law was from Ecuador. She taught me to just blend the cooked oatmeal with more water and some sweetener and it was great in a pinch when I didn’t have milk for my kids. It was wholesome and nutritious. Now looking back. It was better than giving them cow’s milk with all those hormones and antibiotics.

I did not speak Spanish & quietly freaked out for a while because the house had no fridge! Finally my friend asked the family what kind of milk it was. Just oats blended in water with a smidgen of sugar.

I think why Oatly is getting so popular is that the taste is different due to the Enzymatic process they carry out in enzyming tanks, they add natural enzymes (think it might be Amalayse) that breaks the oat starches down into smaller components, primarily maltose, which ends up sweetening the mixture/milk naturally as well as removing some of that sliminess everyone mentions. (Maltose is also called malt sugar BTW so this is why it sweetens).
You can actually buy these Enzymes in vegetarian suitable form so you can pre-soak your oats in an enzyme and water mix before blending (strain and rinse the oats after soaking).

I've been making my own plant based milks. Current fave is cashew/coconut. Same ratio 2 or 4 cups water to 1/2 or 1 cup nut meats/oats. Couldn't stand throwing away the pulp so I make muffins and plan to try making bird cakes. Basic recipe: using the pulp from a full recipe, add 2 c. Almond flour, 1 1/2 tbs bk powder, 2 tsp xanthan gum, 1/2 cup maple syrup, 1 1/2 c vilk or juice. Bake at 425F for about 20 mins. I'm a brown bag chef so you may need to tweak a little to get satisfaction.

Truly, a money saving life saver. I can not believe how much I've enjoyed what recipes I've tried. I remember when I tried vegan recipes years ago. 95% of them were something to endure rather than enjoy. I Love your channel. I'm hoping I can turn on a friend who must change his diet. Stay tuned...

I said to myself my goal is to make (or find) an oat milk recipe as creamy or better than Oatly. I made some this morning, it was good but still missing that Oatly creamy texture. So glad your video popped up I will trying with the cashews next time because I have them raw! Can’t wait

I made this, its quite nice but I recommend passing it through the nut milk bag multiple times.it ends up being more smoother, and less slimy, especially if you clean the bag before you pass it through again.

And, if your water is chilled or you throw in an ice cube it reduces starch emission and therefore slime, and if you don’t have cashews may I suggest almond flour, works really well in a pinch and gives a nice flavor. Thanks for all your wonderful recipes!

I used your recipe and love the results. I also took the pulp and spread it out as best I could on one of my dehydrator trays and let it go at 140 for a couple of hours as an experiment. It came out crispy and flavorful. An added bonus is that it's a blank slate so I can flavor it any number of ways...it's a great quick little cracker or something crunchy to pick up and nibble on...it also lasts a good long while!

Yes! When I went off all animal foods, finding something suitable for tea was a challenge. Oatmilk IMHO is the closest to cow milk in tea. It doesn't clump in piping hot tea and it doesn't make the tea a funny color. Did you try it?

Yes! No oils! I once and a while, have a vegan pizza out at a restaurant that of course has oil, but otherwise, I stay away from oils in plant mills! Way to go, to make a milk without oils! Keep it up.
