Rick Danko - RARE TV APEARANCE - 1991

- The late great Rick Danko makes a rare TV appearance to a corny show called "The Real Story". While this is amazing footage, it is cheaply done and the guy interviewing Rick seems like an idiot. But anyways Ricks
happy go luck personality really shows here as he preforms "Stage Fright", gives a cool interview, and preforms "Blue River". Ricks awesome personality really shines through here. He seems just like a big kid.
*Sorry for the incompleteness, this is how it was when I found it.
Rick had one of the sweetest, most heartfelt voices I’ve ever heard. So unbelievably gifted and greatly missed❤️
Such a warm hearted person
You can always tell it's Rick - jumpy, in motion, lots of emotion - we miss you very much, Rick!
I found the interviewer didn't give him much of a chance but he was probably under a time thing.Rick seemed like such a sweet soul. Thanks Rick for the music.
How I miss Rick, Richard, Levon....they changed my life.
Indeed
I saw them together on 2 different occasions in a small local restaurant and watched both shows each night from living room close, the Rick Danko Band with his brother was great also. Makes it hard to listen the radio nowadays. SDo much great music has been lost over the years to show business.
Dont ya hate when someone asks you a question and cuts you off before you answer it......grrr
Yes… 😑
I agree, rude
They were not the band. They were THE BAND!
perfect response
Like it makes a difference
where I turn@@pwb0511
God bless Rick. It’d be nice if he wasn’t interrupted every time he tried to answer a question.
Yes, the 'host' was a tad on the annoying side. But, it's great to see Rick. He sounded terrific!
Tommy . I have heard many of them live and met many of them . Marley , Dylan, and on and on . But Rick was for me the greatest singer of all time . He bolted on an emotional dimension that for me will never be equalled . May he rest in peace and I thank you for honouring your friend .
Rick and Richard both used
falsetto vocals when the performance required. Some material written by Robbie was 3rd person and some was first person:
Daniel and the sacred harp vs The Shape I'm In, Unfaithful Servant...
Of course the rough hewn harmonies with Levon on The Night They Drove Ole Dixie Down, Volcano from Cahoots. In summary, with 3 lead vocalists, Robbie had no problem writing historical fantasies such as The Rumor & Chest Fever.
The contributions of Garth, Rick, Richard and Levon were credited on the album, but seldom hilited in interviews.
Interviewer's a tool. But Rick sure seemed like a nice guy.
Glad to see Rick at all. Danko is a legend, the interviewer is nobody. Nobody sings or plays like Rick Danko.
Thanks for posting this. I share a birthday with Rick and have been a fan since Big Pink. The host (if one could even call him that) sucks for repeatedly interrupting and causing the viewers and history to miSs out on some nuggets of Rick's experiences and insights.
I also had the good pleasure of hanging and playing with Rick in the late 70s. It still tears at me a little to see something like this---he was just too young to go. Thanks for posting.
I'm surprised you weren't picked to be in The Band
I miss Rick Danko! RIP what a voice
I met Rick backstage and he was real people.
He seemed like the sweetest guy of all of them.
Rick was such a kind hearted soul. Clearly the interviewer was a dolt and Rick could have easily ripped him a new one. I bet more people watched this clip on youtube then ever watched "The Real Story", all episodes COMBINED, and the dumb ass didn't even realize that this one clip would be HIS ONLY claim to fame. Rick was such a nice guy. RIP brother.
I completely agree.
I'd probably forgive the interviewer's shitty comments if he wasn't interrupting Danko every chance he gets.
Such a void - he had such a tender soul.
Rick was such a wonderful presence on this Earth. I miss him a lot. This is a very cool video. Thanks a million.
He doesn't look old enough to have started in the mid 60's. He's amazing.
Thank you for posting this . Terrific.
I was frustrated at the interruptions because he wasn't wandering, he had stuff I wanted to hear, but probably a time limit. This man, what a soul, no matter what shape his voice is in, his singing is all heart and he knows, like all great singers when the pipes get older, how to put it all across, absolutely make you cry and get you just as much as the first time you heard him.
Rip rick richard and levon
Love the man, miss him too....he was just great.
thanks for the post!!
Thanks for sharing. This is great!
Rick Danko and The Band is the best in music history! Just my opinion.
Rick Danko is great. The interviewer is a real stiff.
The interviewer talks over Rick. Let him finish his answer!
At 2.29 Rick does a great impression of Bob Dylan. Very funny and accurate!
There have been many, many tragic injustices in the history of humanity. Such as the fact that Rick Danko didn't live long enough to be a cast member on "Trailer Park Boys".
Great song Rick.....and that voice......they didn't let you finish the song......you are missed.
This is great. Rick has always seemed like a really nice guy
Such a sad ending to a man's life.
Rick , Levon and Richard were amazing human beings and they're most likely jammin' right now!
The interviewer is a mannequin.
💀🎸🎶🎵🌌
what a sweet beautiful soul. and cool as hell.
He really shows his CANADIANESS here. He was so cool. Watch Festival Express...I love the drunk jam with Rick, Janis,Jerry and Bob.Best ever!
Rick: Let me tell you an amazingly interesting story no one has ever heard...
Interviewer: Let me interrupt you and cut you off so you can't finish the story
Rick: I'll just continue to shine and smile my way through this.
He never forgot his "southern" teaching and friends did he. RIP Rick! Love ya bud.
He was from Canada. Not too southern
@@lastnamefirst4035 yes, I know that. Duh. Lol He just had so much of a southern cry in his voice. He and Lavon, man. What greats the whole band, actilually. Richard's voice gave me chills
@@inatizzy2 sorry. I re-read your 1st comment. NOW I see the "southern" in quotations
Rick always stood out to me as a very heart felt performer that had so much soul in his music. I think he was a major influence on Bob Dylan and probably inspired many of Dylans songs. I can hear Rick's style coming through many of Dylans songs. Just his sweet melodies were amazing. He could have been a major major star had he been promoted like Dylan. He seemed to be so modest and such and giving person. He was so positive in his personality. I didnt' know him but it brings a tear when I hear him sing with such strong emotion.
Rick took it in stride. They all did after Robbie. They made many fans playing small clubs disassociated from the band, (or rather Robbie). They played the songs with passion and created their own. I am not very old, tho discovered these guys many years ago. They've shaped and encouraged me, and as I go, I find a whole new generation fed, satiated by these.
Thanks for posting it .
DANKO SO Great a Talent, THANKS FOR POST!!!!
That was a stellar Bob Dylan Impression
I thought it was a good interview and don't believe the interviewer had any ill will. Rick looked great especially 2 years after his son Eli died. I don't think I ever heard him speak other than in song. He was very articulate
So sad about his son
@LocalRailfan To quote another poet "too soon gone" - oh, but he sure could sing. Rick rises above it all with his gentle, lovely performance. Too bad it cuts out before he's done, but I'm glad the camera stayed on him for as long as it did.
I hate to listen to this nobody interviewer talk to a key member of one of the greatest bands of all time who clearly knows NOTHING about the Band or their relation to Dylan. I love this clip for the pure simpilicity of Rick's sound and his gentle approach to the idiot he was interviewed by.
This interviewer is horrible! He did not know who this man is!!! You rock Rick!!
I love this man!
Wonder if the interviewer even appreciated Rick's voice. I don't think so.
He had his own way of moving anytime he was playing and of course his own way of singing
it would have been nice if he let Rick finish a sentence!! There are so few interviews with Rick out there, it would've been nice to here him finish his stories. Great post though. Thanks
Never heard this version, so good. Are full versions available somewhere?
So fortunate! You have that always to treasure. How wonderful.
Interviewer seemed like he wanted Rick to stay focused and get out as much information wiithin a limited time. Bottom line here was that Rick was able to promote two upcoming album releases and his upcoming NYC live show as well as get that tune (Blue River) out before the commercial break. I'd say the interviewer helped Rick out a lot.
I think you've got it right.
Should booked a double segment- too many morning & late night shows rush through their guests & all too often do more talking than the talented artists we turn in to hear!!
Lovely to see and hear rick.
I've never seen a Rick Danko performance that I didn't love. They should have skipped the vapid banter between him and the John Tesh/ Network News anchor look alike dip-shit and let Rick play 4 songs instead. You'll forever be in our hearts Rick ....
Wow, I can't believe I found this on youtube! I remembered seeing this 21 years ago and thought I'd se if it was on youtube, even though I doubted that it would be. Thanks for uploading this!
Nothing wrong with this interview. The host had pretty good sense of momentum, and got a lot of conversation and interest out of a fairly short segment. Danko, what a singular talent!
Ahhhh, the great RICK DANKO.I just bet that ROBBIE ROBERTSON who just joined him alongside RICHARD MANUEL and LEVON HELM are jamming and playing tunes in heaven may they all R.I.P😢❤.
@cwhites1 I had the pleasure of seeing The Band (minus Robbie) here in Australia, I think 1986-87, shortly after Richard passed. Rick played his heart out that night, it's a gig I'll never forget being at. The Band were quite unique in that each member was a talent on his own, together they wrote/recorded/performed beautifully soulful music. I envy your friendship with Rick Danko, having never had the pleasure of meeting him, but I play his music often.
they should never let a guy in a suit interview a real rock and roll hero. it will NEVER work. miss you rick and richard too. you gave us some of the best music ever heard on this planet.
People only have certain amount of time to do interviews you see it all the time.
I don't really know the members of the Band so this was good for me. We were fortunate to even have this much.
Poor Rick - this guy is so rude. He asks him a question and cuts him off mid-sentence.
What a sweet, sweet man.
where did you find this? As Kenny Banyon of Seinfeld fame would say to Jerry " this is GOLD Jerry, this is GOLD " thanks for posting
rick should have read books on tape..what a voice
THANKS RICK!!! LOVE YA BUDDY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nice must run in the family His big brother junior was a multi talented man and one decent dude
If this had of been an English interviewer he would have let the great Rick Danko answer the questions and show a little dignity toward the lad.I would have been in awe myself.Jim.Liverpool.
John Banks You have a valid point John.I suppose I had a specific interviewer in mind at the time.No offence meant.Jim.Liverpool.
Rick Danko died in his sleep from heart failure on 10th December 1999.
16 long years...
RIP Rick. What A sweetheart.
🤔. .Rick, Richard,Bloomfield,Levon, and Butter are making Heavenly 🎶
@LocalRailfan Absolutely! But notice that Rick is such a gracious person that he doesn't let it bother him too much. No use wasting energy on the guy......
One of the coolest things about the Band is that all of them (except for perhaps Richard, and it's not for lack of musical talent) would all have been able to have successful solo careers, they're that good individually. It's also freaky how multi-instrumental they are -- Rick could have never touched a bass in his life and still become famous on the guitar.
Is that a Members Only jacket that Rick is wearing?
Awesome. One might say, Dank
I sat down and cried the day Rick Danko died
Beautiful 😎
Boyd, what a toid!
Poor Rick.
Oh well, nice to hear his voice!
I believe this is John Tesh doing the interview
He was the VOICE.
I feel You brotha!!!
Danko was in good form musically throughout the ‘90s. Physically in good form, seemingly, in 1991. But fell apart quickly.
Danko would NEVER have converted 3.14127 into anthing intelligible. He was all about the strings. Fiddle! He had it!
RIP, heavy, Dude
wicked good one rick
Гордитесь канадцы что у Вас такой великий человек был!!!
Makes me so sad
LOL. Cjc66, that cracked me up!
Tommy, what happened to Rick? He was such a bright guy and to have deteriorated like that? Very sad.
what a great song.too bad it was cut off.
It wasn't! It's not a The Band album he's reffering to...but some Norwegian muscisians he was playing/recording with.Watch the link!
ua-cam.com/video/9OSpytQWaus/v-deo.html
I thought Rick had a great voice.........Let me rephrase that.......Rick Danko had a fabulous voice. Listen to him on the csong "Georgia" he will and has been missed.
Hahaha, turn on the captions on go to 3:24!!!!!
Perfect interruptions from a nobody who thinks he’s a bigger star than the star! Miss you Rick RIP.
Should have written a book but too soon gone.
I wanna click both thumbs:
way up for Danko
way down for dopey host
I think the interviewer is John Tesh.
@Fruscianteistheman: You can't go on. All you did was name two individual artists who just happened to be Canadian and contemporaries of the Band. Van Morrison is Irish. Would you say The Band has American and Irish influences?
Gone too soon...
Boyd Matson, ugh! That could have been an amazing interview if Rick wasn't cutoff every time he opened his mouth.
