That's my Uncle Garth! I love him and Aunt Maud so much! I remember when I lived with them for a while a couple times Garth playing the piano hours upon hours and telling fantastic stories.
Garth picked me up hitchhiking on Route 28 in about 1969. Mercedes. I also saw him buying a fan at the old Caldors where I was working. This was after Big Pink, before the Brown Album. Thank you for everything Garth, you made the world a better place.
Ah, Garth, the unsung genius of The Band who often sat quietly in back and made pure magic happen. And still KILLS on the keys, as is evidenced by that solo action at the end of the video! Piano, organ, accordion, sax... Garth Hudson was and is a marvel.
Roger Rogers Robertson is given as the composer on most of the songs . . .but yeah, I guess the others dispdnt get their due. As someone would say: sad!
In Levon's book he pretty much say that Garth was the brains behind the Band when it came to arranging songs. Had some classical training i.e. check out live intro to Chest Fever. This is gold.
@@locandro1 No. The magic is there because it's allways been there. And, he wasn't physically crippleled to the point that it wasn't possible (wich, regrettably, can happen when you age). But the point remains: Garth has it(!).
On the legendary musician scale, Garth Hudson is on the top. He's an old man now but you sit him in front of a piano and the magic comes out as if if he was back in 1968. Unbelievable !
Much wisdom and experience in those old hands. The Band awoke something in me over 50 years ago that I will take with me to my end. Nothing like these guys, before or since, and I'm so fortunate to have been around when it all happened. Those truly were the good old days!
Garth is one of the great musicians of our time. It was great to see this video and some of The Band's history. It's hard to believe Garth is the only living member of The Band.
I love this video. In 1985 or 1986, I flew from Dallas to Los Angeles. The seat next to me was vacant. At the last moment before the doors were closed, a very tall gentlemen with 2 instrument cases (Clarinet and Oboe?) came down the aisle. He apologize profusely for making everyone get up, my seat was in the centre of the cabin. The gentleman and I started to chat. When you are sitting next to someone, you don’t easily recognize them. We started to talk about music. I suddenly realized who this was. It was Garth and we talked about music, CDs (new then), working with Bob and also music therapy for people in comas. Garth gave me his telephone number and said I should give him a call and stop by sometime. For some reason, I never did and I still regret that. Garth is a very gracious and humble man!❤
One of the greatest pleasures of my life was seeing The Band perform at the HOB/West Hollywood in the mid 90s. I was blown away, and subsequently walked out, on to Sunset Blvd, and on to their bus, where I met Rick, Levon, and Garth. They, and their driver, were as kind as could be. I still have my autographed ticket stub from that show with Garth's signature right on the front. To this very day I refer to that show as the best that I have ever witnessed, out of the hundreds of shows that I have attended in my time.
Thank you Garth for getting those magical sounds on tape for all of eternity. I made the pilgrimage to Big Pink about 20 years ago and it is indeed sacred ground.
The heart and soul of The Band. It took 12 musicians to duplicate what this one man did on Ophelia. “Garth Hudson - organ, synthesizers, trumpet, horn, oboe, clarinet, flute.”
We brought Garth Hudson back to Big Pink for the first time since 1968 for an exclusive documentary. Watch below and don't forget to subscribe to our channel! bit.ly/1vULYMT
Thank you so much for this look inside the house where magic happened. Richard "Beak" was from my hometown and my parents and friends were in the same scene at the time and it was always excitement when the Band were around town. I have all kinds of stories passed on to me but it is nice to see this look inside because I was only a really young kid at the time they were taking their bows from the original line-up. Much appreciated, and keep these great shorts coming, it is about time RS initiated some changes in media format especially now with the age of your now iconic subjects that started all of the main content.
Yes sirree! Garth still flows with the magic he's never lost on the keyboard. To see him wearing a LOS LOBOS[Whose latest "back to their roots" release is maybe the best Los Lobos record ever!] shows he may be older, but still is on top of the latest in musicland and is classy as all get out!!! Sure is great to see him back at Big Pink and to imagine all those best of times! Bless you Garth-- thanks for your gift of music to us all.
Wow. What a great little film. To see Garth go back to that famous house was amazing as he told stories of how it all went down. And the end where he plays the piano…..magical! Thank you Rolling Stone. 👍👏
Hi Garth and Maud. Thank you to the owner for letting us in. Thank you Rolling Stone for this video. Big Pink is a Shrine. Music recording was changed for ever there. Miss you Richard, Rick, and Levon. You deserve so much more Garth. Hope you realize how much people admire you. Your day will come Robbie.
Not much is mentioned about Garth, but he is among the greats of the keys. He gave the Band's sound the pavement it needed to move. Integral and inextricable from the Band's identity.
People will still be listening to The Band in 100 years, and Garth was a big part of that. Musical legend. RIP Levon, Robbie, Rick, and Richard. That story should be a biopic.
I love this lovely little slice of life, and Garth Hudson is about the most unique musician I have ever heard - love the Band and Dylan. Always will, and Garth is truly one of a kind. This little film captures that. Thank you.
No other band has moved me more. I have a picture of Big Pink on my bedroom wall, great conversation piece. But you really don't want to get me started talking about The Band, as I'm likely to never stop.
Nobody is stopping you. Who's your favorite member? I'm partial to Danko but Helm is pretty amazing that half time beat. He's my favorite drummer neck and neck with Charlie Watts.
Fantastic. I've always admired Garth's ability and although he was never in the forefront of the band on stage, I feel he was the power behind it musically.
I live in London Ontario, and all the members of the Band grew up nearby except Levon. Richard Manuel is from Stratford, where I grew up. The legacy of their music kind of runs through my mind and veins. Thank you the Band, so much for sharing your journey with us.
I've known Garth and the others in the Band on a personal level for most of my life. All great guys, and yes...Garth is amazing like others have posted. Garth spent a lot of time at our business in Woodstock, writing, editing and copying sheet music. That and napping lol. Garth has narcolepsy so he'd doze off from time to time. He's not like most other musicians and celebrities that visit or live here....he actually is nice and loves to talk to people. Very much a people person. HIs knowledge of music and his capabilities are amazing, and greatly underappreciated and unrecognized. Sister Maude is also awesome!! Seen Dylan a couple times but never got to talk to him. If i would have asked Garth or the other guys they would have made it happen, but we just don't do that lol. It's one of the big reasons they like Woodstock, nobody is star struck and they can be left alone.
"IN HIS recently released memoir, “Chronicles,” Dylan sums up his local experience succinctly: “Early on, Woodstock was hospitable to us.” Unfortunately, the houses at Byrdcliffe and later on Ohayo Mountain Road, where Dylan lived with his wife and children, soon became a mecca for “dropouts and druggies,” “moochers” and “goons,” Dylan writes, describing the unwelcome visitors who would show up at all hours looking for a handout or some contact with their idol. Things got so bad, Dylan writes, that he kept a pair of pistols and a “blasting rifle” on hand, though he had been warned by local police that he could be arrested for shooting the trespassers or sued if one of them should take a fall while creeping over his roof."
Such a beautiful short movie, loved the band for years. The final couple of minutes contain the most pure music for the heart and soul , I have ever heard. So uplifting in these days of shadows and fear.
Wow, this is history people. The Band is such an extraordinary band, and for that reason, they created some of the finest music the world will ever hear. This is incredible.
I would like to give a huge thank you to the present owner of the house who agreed to let in the film crew and the very special person in the house’s history, Garth. He has brought so much joy- not only to Garth- but to the thousands of fans who have watched this video. It seems like it might be possible to record music there in the basement, but I’m also referring to the outside of the house, glimpses of the property, and (especially) to his living quarters upstairs. That’s something he didn’t have to do and which was very special to show the public. Thank you very much for letting us glimpse into your private residence- it means so much to us music fans and to music history. You are very kind to do this for everyone.
That area of NY state - Saugerties, Woodstock, Bearsville, etc. - is filled with amazing natural beauty that came through in the music. Truly wonderous.
That whole area around woodstock n.y. is magical..our band is about 60 miles away, but we did alot of festival and shows near there in the 1990's...the woodstock spirit is still alive.
I once had listen to the Basement Tapes while driving all day with my wife. Drove 8 hours from Calgary to Regina, listening to it over and over again. She had never heard of this record, it was the first time for her. At first, I can tell she didn't know what to think of these songs. I thought she was going to tell me to throw it out the window. After I got through the entire four sides the first time, she was hooked.
Great story and I see you've got Waits as your profile picture. He listed the Basement Tapes as one of his favourite albums, music all comes around full circle
I always get emotional when I see the last waltz and it was a swan song i guess why robbie ended it I dont know it's too bad the other members didnt write any songs it was robbie and thsts it r I p richard and levon and rick ty for great music
I bought "The Basement Tapes" on cassette in 1975 and still have it in a box full of my old tapes. I no longer have a cassette player and can't listen to it anymore. Several years later I bought "Music From Big Pink" when it came out on those half-speed master disc albums they used to make. I still listen to it on a very old Pioneer turntable, amp and speakers. The music will live forever!
Loved this video - found Big Pink in the fall of 2014 after getting lost at first following the dodgy directions from a girl in a shop in Woodstock, It was one of those moments when you get a thrill from finding something that had such great cultural importance. Seeing the video reminded me of the day we drove there. Didn't want to disturb the owners, of course, so just had a quick photo stop outside.
Garth is a legend.I saw an interview with Roger Waters saying about his version of The Wall in Berlin with the Band as some of the artists. And about the fact that he used Garth on several songs because he was in awe of him and his talent.
Wow. I'm completely gobsmacked. I'm a massive fan of The Band and I don't think I've *ever* heard Garth Hudson talk so much in all my years scouring first books and then the net for any info I could find on The Band. This is AWESOME!!
My partner and I, along with a good buddy, made the trek up to West Saugerties, NY a few years ago - after going to one of Levon's "Midnight Rambles" at his home in Woodstock - and found "Big Pink". There are no signs directing folks to the house, nor any indication whatsoever that musical history was made there. But it was quite thrilling to see the outside (still kind of pink) of the house where The Band - and later Dylan and The Band - many such wonderful music! RIP Richard, Rick & Levon.
Garth, the last man standing, one of life’s great eccentrics. The footage of him reading out a list of names he wants to thank at the R&R Hall of Fame (I think) while the Band cracks up behind him is something I will always love.
By the way, for anyone who loves the Basement Tapes, for my money... pound for pound...Dylan's album, Planet Waves is in the top five list of every album Bob recorded. And, The Band is the back up band. Give it a listen if you haven't yet. Released in 74, its the album with Forever Young, and a personal favorite, Hazel. "Hazel... dirty blond hair... I wouldn't be ashamed to be seen with you anywhere!" OMG, The Band sparkles like Sapphires on this album, every nuance, every subtlety. The magic of Robbie, Rick, Richard, Garth and Levon. Like the Fab Four, what they did, can never be duplicated. Like ancient seers; mountain men singing folk songs from days of yore.
Thank you Don this prob too big of a stretch in time but never mind hope yr doin fine. Old age is not for the faint of heart but this piano man - oh yeah. You can spend a long time in the silence yet still come back to lovely sounds like this for th best of humanity and good times. Like the smell of the forest.
I'm not sure if it was one of Bob's best considering it was a bit rushed during his comeback break through tour. But it had a few solid songs for sure. But I think the album was a little rushed. What did stand out was robbie's guitar 'style' which was very apparent on the down the flood album for sure. It wasn't really that way on the early Band albums but he really fleshed it out during this album and on the albums after this you can hear he has that sounds.. (for instance the intro to lay lady lay on before the flood is what i mean!)
I have always said the same exact thing but nobody listens. Dylan was at his best when The Band were behind him. On a Night Like This and Tough Mama- holy god, great songs
Earlier this year the love of my life took me on a surprise road trip. Where did we end up? At Big Pink! I had the honor of touching the home that influenced music history and my life. I’ll always cherish that moment.
Yep. And much of it we'll never come close to knowing. The few moments that were captured in some form and which are, thankfully, still accessible today are enough for me to dine on for my lifetime. Yet, if only we could travel back in time and space... 🙂
AS we all have grown older now in my 60's I still have strong memories of PIG PINK the BAND and Dylan.. I luckily stayed in the music industry and eventually purchased Stax Studios in Memphis then started several smaller specialty labels and now own a not for profit 501-c-3 American Heritage Music Preservation and Voice of Memphis Music.. preserving artist , broadcast material. films, records, interviews,, and more.. AS someone says in these little comments record record then ask questions.. Always make sure the machine is rolling... *)O(* MY emotions hit me much more these days as I grow older and physically not as well*)O(*
The vital essence of The Band is Garth's virtuosity which infected the rest of The Band and brought their collective game up. The Band would have been way above average but not epic without Garth.
He was the trained musician of the bunch. If I heard correctly in an interview somewhere, I think from Robbie, Ronnie Hawkins had to turn on the charm to get his musical career off course from his parent’s vision. The rest is history.
Levon Helm talks about that in his book This Wheel's on Fire. He was very generous in his praise of Garth. It took Ronnie a couple of tries with Garth's parents. He also mentions some technical things Garth did with his keyboards that seem way ahead of his time.
@@lorenzozambelli1727 They did, no doubt. Wonderful, all, but Garth amazed me with the original sounds he got on the organ. Nobody else had anything like that going.
a tear came to me for the Good old days.............I wish then I realize that was a magic time........kind of proud I,m a burn out from the 60s...........................peace
heh! ;) i'll quote something i saw in a disney imagineer interview i saw recently, believe it or not... "a -good- friend will bail you out of jail... a -true- friend will be sitting alongisde you saying, 'damn! wasn't that fun!'" ;0
Garth is the last man standing. All the others will be there to greet him when his time comes and pick up where they left off. Hauntingly beautiful. It just confirms that we're all just passing through. These guys sure did leave their mark. Beautiful ghosts.
That's my Uncle Garth! I love him and Aunt Maud so much! I remember when I lived with them for a while a couple times Garth playing the piano hours upon hours and telling fantastic stories.

Super cool.
Awesome recollection. One of the great things about UA-cam is hearing everyone's stories in this wonderful world.
At around the same time frame I was once hitchhiking from Kingston to NYC on the Thruway and Buddy Miles picked me up.
These 9 minutes justify the existence of the internet. Thank you Garth, and I tip my hat to everyone who helped make this touching moment possible.
I wish I could give this comment more than one like
Watching this after Robbie's passing, this video is even more emotional, as Garth is the last one left.
Bless Garth Hudson
I'm actually in tears right now. We cannot overestimate Garth Hudson. We cannot underestimate The Band. Stunning footage. Thanks RS!

Garth's opening to "Chest Fever" is what made that tune what it is.
The man's piano playing at the end carries within it all that old Americana sound that was present in The Band's best recordings.
Not really, despite nearly all of them being from Canada they said themselves America was at the root of their sound.
Additionally, "Americana" is a marketing term that was stamped onto a genre of music only recently.
levon helm was the root of a canadian bands sound, and robbie took all the royalties

Garth's eyes and voice are still young. What an amazing film.
I wish they were all here to take the tour with him. How quickly time goes by.
Very emotional... fantastic that the house is pretty much as it was. A shrine indeed!
This made my day. Always good to hear from/about Garth Hudson. Love may he run.
RIP Richard, Rick & Levon.
a place that will always be so special
Thanks for sharing your story Tony.
It appears to be perfectly preserved, I'm surprised they didn't offer tours
Love that he has a Los Lobos jacket on.
It's great to see Garth has survived life of the Road and still has his magic fingers.
Garth, the last man standing, one of life’s great eccentrics. The footage of him reading out a list of names he wants to thank at the R&R Hall of Fame (I think) while the Band cracks up behind him is something I will always love.
What a beautiful look back! Garth is such a gift person/musician! Thank you for putting this on UA-cam☺
What a lovely little film... God bless you, Garth.
Met Garth in Kingston NY. Took him to Walmart!! Bought some Camels...talked to him for hours what a great memory he has!!!
Afrojack Why did he not have a vehicle?
What a great time for music. I'm grateful that I was around to experience it.) Oh yes, RIP Robbie Robertson.)
what a brilliant man with a great sense of humor!! Glad to see him thriving in his old age
Thank You, Mr. Hudson...'What are memories made of?'
My heart grew a couple of sizes in those nearly nine minutes. Much love.
Very powerful. RIP Levon, Rick, Richard. Wish they could have been in the video as well...
On a Night Like This and Tough Mama- holy god, great songs
sweet garth. always the humblest. and best musician
off the charts
This is important. They were such a great band, I love their music so much
Garth still got it
Earlier this year the love of my life took me on a surprise road trip. Where did we end up? At Big Pink! I had the honor of touching the home that influenced music history and my life. I’ll always cherish that moment.
Levin, Richard and Rick were right there when Garth was playing....you can feel their spirits smiling and crying at the same time!!!!
Heart warming.....
Great to see the house again, great to see Garth. Love his hat and, especially, that Los Lobos jacket! The Band music forever!
Dylan & The Band give the word "Legendary" new meaning!
This is the absolute Pirates Treasure right here!!!! Oh man!!! The man still plays beautifully. What a great video. Thank you for the goodies.
How many amazing moments must have happened in that small piece of Eden near Woodstock...
Yep. And much of it we'll never come close to knowing. The few moments that were captured in some form and which are, thankfully, still accessible today are enough for me to dine on for my lifetime. Yet, if only we could travel back in time and space... 🙂
The church of Garth, priceless. The last couple of minutes say more musically than anything I've heard recently.
the sign of the cross?
Garth's swagged out in the Los Lobos jacket, hat, and aviators! One of the coolest guys ever still doing it.
This is just absolutely fantastic!
The voicings and various decorations on the piano at the end, gorgeous.
Garth, one of the best! Makes me sad to see him getting so old. Life.
The vital essence of The Band is Garth's virtuosity which infected the rest of The Band and brought their collective game up. The Band would have been way above average but not epic without Garth.
Levon said as much in his book "This Wheel's On Fire". A musician's musician.
I think everybody had a special part there... Everybody
@@lorenzozambelli1727 They did, no doubt. Wonderful, all, but Garth amazed me with the original sounds he got on the organ. Nobody else had anything like that going.
a tear came to me for the Good old days.............I wish then I realize that was a magic time........kind of proud I,m a burn out from the 60s...........................peace
we're all getting old and looking back. Can't dwell on the "what ifs", just be glad we got to be there .....
heh! ;) i'll quote something i saw in a disney imagineer interview i saw recently, believe it or not... "a -good- friend will bail you out of jail... a -true- friend will be sitting alongisde you saying, 'damn! wasn't that fun!'" ;0
i wasnt planning on crying today
God bless Garth Hudson.
Seeing him like this tears my heart out.
He's barely hanging on.
Only Robbie is left.
Garth is the last man standing. All the others will be there to greet him when his time comes and pick up where they left off. Hauntingly beautiful. It just confirms that we're all just passing through. These guys sure did leave their mark. Beautiful ghosts.
Don't forget Bob! He is still with us
Sometimes ill wake up and smile and look at my girlfriend and say "Bob Dylan still lives!"
WOW!!!...Time sure flies!! I've never heard Garth say so much!!
