- Rick Danko was a Canadian musician born on December 29 1943 in Blaney Ontario Rick played bass guitar for the band Rick Danko dropped out of school to pursue music full time at the age of 14. Since 1965 he and his comrades in the band then called the hawks. As lead vocalist, bassist, and acoustic guitar player for The Band, and as a solo craftsman, his commitments have been significant. Hailing from Green's Corners, almost a mile and a half from the minor provincial town of Simcoe, Ontario, Rick was born into a melodic family. Both of his guardians and his three brothers played musical instruments and or sang, and music was a way of life for him from the start. He tuned in to Hank Williams and Sam Cooke as a little child and was "prepared to go to Nashville" by the age of seven. With his most seasoned brother, Maurice ("Junior"), Rick sang and performed at family get-togethers and made his open big appearance on four-string tenor banjo sometime ago a group of his first-grade classmates in 1960, when he was 17, he joined rockabilly vocalist Ronnie Hawkins’ bunch, The Hawks, at first as a rhythm guitarist. He before long moved to bass, learning his instrument "one string at a time," and, with the assistance of the Hawks’ boogie-woogie piano player (and afterward, piano player for the 1980s incarnation of The Band) Stan Szelest, whose left-hand procedures he memorized and adjusted to his bass playing, started creating his trademark percussive but sliding fashion. under Ronnie Hawkins’ tutelage, Rick started a three-year residency of continuous gigging and thorough practices that individual Band-mate Richard Manuel once compared to "boot camp." By the time he was 20, he was a prepared professional, having gone through most of his high school a long time "playing in bars merely were assumed to be 21 to play in."
Rick was one of three great vocalists of the legendary group, the Band. A great singer and bass player.

Thats sarcasm right ? Dylans vocals are almost unlistenable...his lyrics however are sublime .
I think they were way more sophisticated than Dylan.

In high school we had a really cool history teacher one day he wandered in with Music From Big Pink and Alice's Restaurant under his arm so we were educated in great music Stan became a friend to us I howled like a baby when I got that phone call telling me that he had died but it was just as well because he was at the early stages of dementia and he knew it.

Stoney Lake? Beautiful area, but then Ronnie moved to Peterborough where I am & where he sadly passed away. I remember that day.
As for Rick, a friend of mine was close to him & very, very saddened when he died.
I was a huge fan of The Band, seeing them in concert 3 times - Toronto late 60's & early 70's.

Rick was NOT the lead singer!
The Band had 3 great singers, Rick was one of them. All were great. I love Rick.

Danko was most definitely the weakest link in The Band . His career , or lack of, after The Band , is telling ....................

Robbie had a very successful career after The Band. Solo albums, starred in movies and most important composing music for Martin Scorsese's movies. I don't agree that Rick was the weakest link, listen to him sing Stage Freight or It makes no difference. He did quite a few songs with other members of The Band in the eighties, listen to him singing "A long black veil".@@kevinjoseph517
Those of us who are fans of Rick's will disagree and so will his band members. This is what Robbie wrote of Rick in his book, when they were performing The Last Waltz: As soon as Rick started to sing "It makes no difference" I knew he was weaving a spell, he sounded as good as he looked. Rick's support in music and in life was unparalleled in this group, come rain or shine Rick had your back. As for his musical abilities, Robbie wrote he could hear intricate parts, he was the king of harmonies, it was because of Rick the Band got known for their harmonies. He played a fretless bass while singing harmonies and killer vocals, that is a high wire act. Does not sound like a weak link. Probably Richard was the weakest link, not because he wasn't talented or had and incredible voice, but his addiction to alochol and drugs interferred with his performances.
Tell us that you know nothing about The Band without telling us you know nothing about The Band.

If you are replying to me, obviously I know something about the Band since I read Robbie's book, I read Barney Hoskyns biography of The Band and listened to several interviews here on Utube. Check out Rick's version of "A long black Veil" from 1983, it is available here on Utube. Or listen to him sing "Stagefreight". Rick had many fans, still does.
