Fantastic interview! I’ve been a fan of Bob Dylan since 1963. And I am 69 years old. His song writing is a gift. In my opinion he is the greatest songwriter of all time.
@@mr.smithgnrsmith7808 Ive got to agree. Tom Petty's lyrics were magic even the simple ones. When Tom and Bob got together with George Harrison, Jeff Lynne and Rob Orbison and created the Traveling Wilbury's It was the greatest thing to happen to music in a long time. I just wish we got more from them.

He just also happened to be a brilliant songwriter. By his own admission, he entered the folk scene very cynically and specifically to get into the music industry. He was no wallflower. He was the only one in that entire scene who was husting constantly to get close to the most powerful names in the business. And good for him, not knocking that at all - but this was no innocent rose who just "stumbled" into fame. ;-)
@redadamearth I agree, no one who reaches that kind of success just "stumbles" upon it... But with that said, what hell is wrong with using one's talent to make a shit load of money? Ha, selling out, to me, is changing your style solely to make more money, but it's absolutely possible to keep ones integrity, without changing their style, and still sell millions of records. Great interview--thanks for posting. Seeing this right after seeing a lot of publicity for his new biopic *A Complete Unknown*, starring Timothee Chalamet, in cinemas now, Christmas Week 2024.

I remember the first time I saw this interview when it was broadcast in 1985. I was 19 had a very limited knowledge of Bob. I discovered his discography shortly after and spent the next almost 40 years listening to the greatest songwriter of the 20th century.
Nearly forty years ago Bob Dylan seemed to have little star attitude about him and showed a dose of sensible self-doubt, no display of grandeur. Things may have changed in the intervening years, though he probably still “comments” without the conviction that this will change the world, with a shoulder shrug and some resignation. His life, his journey, his opinion. When asked about religious beliefs he points out what it meant to him, refraining from trying to influence. A man with admirable qualities, writer of poetic lyrics and singer of thought-provoking songs
And almost 40 years after ,, DYLAN "The Song and Dance man" Still Stands at the very top of the Tower of Song , A veteran 40 years ago ;;; what can one call him now, I would say The Timeless Master of Song, 64 years giving voice, How I would relish another 64 years. Thank you Bob for your huge part in making me the Man I am. Cheers Gabriel ☀️👣
That was cool, especially after seeing the movie "A Complete Unknown", and being 25 years older than he was when he did this interview. He definitely was a big influence on our culture, including my music and writings. One thing that bothered me in the movie is his response when asked how he was able to write his stuff: Paraphrasing; he said that he saw in their faces the question why couldn't they do it? I am glad that I didn't feel so much that way as much as gratitude for his talent and the opportunity to freely access my imagination and let the songs and ideas flow through me like they obviously did through him. What's the term called?
There are certain rare interviews where Bob lets down the guard just a bit. This one of the few. I love it. Contrast this with the Uber-guarded 60 minutes interview he did with Ed Bradley, which revealed exactly nothing. This one, on the other hand, is great. Or I think so, anyway.
Bob's problem is that he's gotten so many awards and honors: the Lifetime Achievement Award, the Nobel Prize, the Congressional Medal of Honor, the Nashville Most Prestigious Award for Skinny Guys, that there's hardly anyone left to give him a little shit once in a while. Just to, y'know, keep him glued to the ground. So I've done that sporadically in different You Tube videos over the last few years. It's OK Bob, no need to thank me, it was my pleasure.
2:37 I was looking down and I heard this voice is like I know that voice that’s the MTV guy the news guy on MTV back in the day areas I’ll be there but I didn’t know he was a Rolling Stone
In the 60's, it took me about five years to realize "Blowin in the Wind" had just been written and wasn't a classic folk song. Maybe, because I first heard it via "Peter, Paul and Mary" who were "folk singers". I had their double live album released in 1963 ish. It took me till Dylan went electric to begin to appreciate Dylan as a performer. Initially, I didn't like his early stuff, now I think nothing compares with his early stuff. My appreciation grew when I was partying on acid and some Dylan came on who seemed to be saying stuff that directly applied to me in that room....I hear he grew up an Orthodox Jew and think he still may be one though he seems to go to pains not to discuss it. Jews believe in a coming Messiah and Dylan claims to have a messianic vision which may be a back door admission his Jewish faith is still strong
One thing that really vexes me about this otherwise excellent interview is the mystery of Bob's jacket. If you watch the full version he's wearing a dark jacket as they walk up the hill, but Bob is jacketless during the interview and in one of the outtakes the wind is blowing and Bob looks cold, so Bob Brown generously offers to lend him his jacket (which Bobby D. declines). What happened to his jacket? I realize this is a small issue in the grand scheme of life, but the incongruity troubles me. 🤔
Dylan supposedly was "saved" in the late 70's early 80's, and he is Jewish. However, Dylan may not ever realize the God he searched for is Yahweh in scripture. He's part of Judah, the southern kingdom that will be united with the northern lost tribes at Yahshua's second coming so he was correct in saying there's a messianic kingdom coming. He may've found Jesus, but he hasn't come to know the real Messiah Yahshua and his heritage as part of the Jews that will unite with Israel. But when Yahshua returns, he will know a whole lot more at his resurrection if he doesn't return in his lifetime. The two sticks will be reunited Bob. And Judah will say "blessed is he who comes in the name of Yahweh". Things will be much clear at that time. Was so happy to get to see you in concert in 2007 twice that year. Been a fan ever since the late 60's.
I would've liked him to elaborate on the "I don't believe people can save themselves" line. Taken at face value, I couldn't disagree more, but I have to assume he didn't mean it literally.
Ivthink he is way self effacing about his talent and accomplishments. He acts like the songs wrote themselves. He is genious but they are often whacked. He should take some credit.
He's not bitter, he's just an old man who wants the privacy he deserves and to live his remaining years how he wants, not continue to be hounded and distorted by media and obsessive fans.
Glad to be reacquainted with his music. Enjoyed the movie, but enjoying the deep dive into the 60’s life. Don’t blink: 60 years pass pretty fast.
