I am also creating an elective for my son. He wants to dig deeper into WW11 so trying all sorts of documentaries, books as well as a course through Hillsdale College. Such great tips!! Thank yoi
I would highly recommend this play list and the whole channel of this college professor who LOVES homeschoolers ...they are his best students in college :) He has a facbook page and offers dfferent units for a few dollars, I just got WW1 and WW 2 from him ua-cam.com/video/2EjoJnymgak/v-deo.html
I announced them in the video I posted today! Pretty sure I’ll be gathering materials and writing the electives myself but they are 2 topics I feel are important. Can’t wait to share more about them soon!
Do things as a group as much as possible. Teach to the oldest and let the younger kids tag along, they will pick up more than you might expect. I have 3 kids, grades 11th, 9th, and 6th. The only things they do separately are math and LA. Everything else is done together. You don't have to use a curriculum with a high school label on it. You can use a middle school or elementary curriculum and add on extra reading, research papers, or more projects. You can give credits for independent, interest-led learning, without ever needing to buy any curriculum.
I was just looking through what we currently have. I started a spreadsheet with a different tab for each school year left. The listed out what we may use each year and the different options I am looking at for each course and the cost of it. It was an eye opener. I found some curriculum I am using for my high schooler has been updated and I would have to purchase then entire curriculum again not just the work book. I have found another on line retailer that still have the old version and will be purchasing the extra work book now.
A coupe things we have done, labs with friends so we can split the cost of lab materials, I teach as much as possible rather than pay for online courses or we use usb vidoes that can be passed down, and for computers my husband has been able to find fantastic deals on eBay for slightly used computers that meet our needs well. We also have a library that is great about ordering books we request so i can request literature books we would like rather than having to buy them all
Thank you for sharing all those great ideas! When my daughter was taking chemistry, one of her friends actually came over a couple days a week so I could teach them both together and they did the labs together. Not only were we able to share the cost of those supplies with the other family, but they had a lot of fun being able to work together on the labs.
What tips do you have for saving money while homeschooling through high school?
