Hello and welcome! My name is Abbey, and I'm a Christian, homeschooling mom of 2, and full time nurse. I also run a home based cake business on the side. I believe we are never too old to learn something new and explore new hobbies. Mine include baking, gardening, crafting, quilting, camping...the list goes on. And I never shy away from a DIY challenge!
On my channel, you can follow our journey with homeschooling through high school and see what we've learned along the way. I'll also share about homemaking, motherhood, DIY projects, cooking and more! Thanks for joining us!

Hey friends! Thanks for joining me for today's vlog as I start to tackle one of my June projects - cleaning out and reorganizing our homeschool room. I'm sharing my favorite app for organizing our home library as well as what I actually spent on books for our literature based curriculum. I also will give tips on how you can save money while doing a lit based program.

Recent Reads | Books for Young Readers to Adults
Переглядів 5142 місяці тому
It's been awhile since I've shared my recent reads, so today I thought I would go through several books I've completed. This list is interesting in that it has books for all different age ranges. I was recently asked to review a new book for littles, then by chance came upon a book I loved for elementary age students. And of course there are books for my homeschool teens and some I've been read...
I was just looking at my book shelf thinking it was time to reorganize it and get rid of some books we don't need/want any longer. 😊
My problem is I have a hard time of letting go of books. But the extra bookcase is set up now so we have a little wiggle room before it’s all filled again!
What Walmart bookcase do you like? Does it hold up well? We’re hours away from ikea and it’s time to retire my Kallax unit.
All mine are the Better Homes and Garden brand from Walmart. I’ve had the 16 cube unit for about 4 years now and the extra 8 cube units for 2 or 3. They’ve held up pretty decently. I always unload them before trying to move the shelves around but I haven’t noticed any bowing to the shelves despite how much I load them up with
I agree you should get that fourth bookcase! 😊
It’s been added to the row! Now working on reorganizing all the books
@@mypracticallyimperfectlife Yay! I can’t wait to see how it all looks!
Love your sweatshirt! Lots of fun memories there for us 😊
I was just there camping with my troop and a huge puddle of water came off our easy up and caught me right on the back soaking the only sweatshirt I had with me. So I picked this one up at the camp store. Pokagon is always a great spot to camp
I am crazy like you! 😂 I am a minimalist at heart. Having too many things just causes me stress. But books are my exception. I have always dreamed of having a home library and have been collecting books for a while. Like you, if there is a list I want all of the books on that list. We are running out of space too... But for years I have had this very small, persistent thought that I need to have physical media. Don't know why exactly, but it has definitely been a benefit to my children, to have a small library at their fingertips 😊
Please do a video on your SAT program opinion, thank you!
For physics, did you consider Guest Hollow for their literature based physics? Or did you need something more algebra based?
Your video answered the exact question I had about these specific courses. Thank you!
How many hours per day would you plan for this course, including reading, videos and experiments?
For the Dave Ramsey foundations finance course, did you buy the student add-on?
Hi abbey , how did dd like the SAT prep program ? Did she feel that it helped with the English portion of the test? My dd did great with the math, but the English is really tripping her up and we are looking for a program to help crack the English sat code!!! Ugh thanks!
She just got her scores and totally rocked the English portion. She did feel like the program helped, especially with feeling comfortable taking the full length test
Sometimes you have to take care of YOU. You can't pour from an empty cup. I'm sorry that you keep having the procedure and not given a local med to help the pain. I hear that a lot of gyn thing there are no nerves there or something crazy thing like that. Either way, thank you for the update. I always appreciate your videos! Take all the time you need. We are chilling this month into July, but trying to keep up with Math because we are behind in that before my boys move up. I am also slowly working on 7th, 9th, and 10th grade curricula, schedules, and buying books and such up as i can.
I was wondering if your daughter received her June SAT scores and what your impressions are on PrepScholar after this first SAT for her? Seriously considering purchasing their course though I have a tight budget. Thank you.
She just got her results last week and was in the top 10%! She did particularly well in the English portion. I’m planning an update video about PrepScholar including her thoughts on it
@@mypracticallyimperfectlife Congratulations, that's remarkable! Thank you, I look forward to your update!
Made me cry
What are you using for German?
We used Klasse from Klett. Very solid German courses (we have used years 1-3). However, it is ALL in German, including the teacher guide. It worked for us since I took 4 years of German in HS and still can speak and read it. But if your student is going to be learning German on their own, I would look into some online programs as an alternative
This course sounds amazing!!
I hope it will be! There was so much I wanted to include and am looking forward to using it with both my teens this fall
Thank you the video. Love the advice on using the Mason jar website. I will be canning for the first time this year ans a bit nervous. Also realized I need to fertilize my plants. Thank you so much Abbey for the video, your garden is beautiful!
so as a parent, I am not worried nor do I care about finding a way that is painless to do a research paper, Those children that are college bowled on the first day of class you may have a number of papers to do excessive several pages baby research papers, or papers multitude of subjects My children went to college, They're all grown Were ill prepared to write And the style of AMA or MLA
I love this! ❤ My yard is tiny (a tenth of an acre!), but I'm making the most of it and growing tons of food. Not a year's supply of anything, but I can always add something fresh from the garden everyday during the growing season. Can't make jams from the berries, but can add a handful of homegrown blackberries every morning in my oatmeal. You are right, we don't need acres and acres of land to garden. Some would even argue that smaller gardens are even more productive because they don't overwhelm you as much, so you're most likely to be out tending it more often, thus increasing productivity. Thanks for sharing your amazing gardening tips and your beautiful garden with us.❤❤
What a gorgeous garden. So peaceful.
Thank you Abbey…I’m also having a struggle with letting group things go. With having 2 in High School, 1 in middle school and 1 elementary…it’s a juggle for time. It’s hard to let go of “doing field trips, projects etc together” as each child is at a different stage in their education.
Thank you. Question. Can you share your thoughts on Ramsey personal finance vs Guest Hollow personal finance?
The Ramsey course was a good basic introduction to the key principles of the Ramsey method of budgeting and managing finances. In the Guest Hollow course, my daughter read one of Dave Ramsey’s books but also looked at finances from other perspectives. The projects included making meals and items for home in a low cost way which I thought was good for showing how you could do things on a budget. The Ramsey program is all online and self graded and definitely takes less than a full semester to complete. So all in all while I personally follow the Ramsey method I think it would depend on how in-depth you want your student to go into personal finances. I know that on the Ramsey website there are additional financial courses you can have your student do online. If you wanted to go all online route, I would recommend looking at several of their courses or seeing if they have one of their bundles on sale to bulk it up as a course. If you want your student to learn multiple perspectives on finances and budgeting, as well as have some hands-on practical projects to do then I would consider Guest Hollow.
@@mypracticallyimperfectlife Thank you so much for the feedback. You gave me lots of food for thought. I appreciate all of your content.
It's always been the times of struggle in our family, where I feel the most guilt about things, that my kids have grown and matured the most. Which is a good reminder that we don't have to be perfect as mothers!
That’s right! We moms can be practically imperfect 😄
Always love and appreciate the perspective you bring. I cannot stress how encouraging it is to hear you share the fruit of all of those years of hard work you put in during those earlier years of homeschooling. I have a few years yet before mine will be in high school, but I am so grateful for mamas like you who share what the end of the homeschool journey looks and feels like. ❤
Food allergies can cause changes in menstrual cycles and issues like pcos too.
Women’s health is always pushed to the back burner since we care for so many people and take care of so many things. I’m glad you are ok. This was a good reminder that moms need to care for ourselves.
Hi! My daughter is almost 14 and for the first 10 1/2 years of her life, she had the same eczema issues you mentioned. I "joked" that it looked like she has leprosy. Drs always just said it was eczema and prescribed creams and lotions. Finally, it was sooo raw and hurt so much, I decided to cut it some food as as experiment- starting with gluten food + then I was going to switch and try dairy if it didn't work, And go down the line of allergens) within 2 weeks, it was completely cleared up. We went to a tea house and she had gluten (on purpose) and within 15 min of eating, it was as though it hadn't cleared at all and came back with a vengeance. She also had digestive issues (both constipation AND diarrhea, depending on the day)- of course I had no idea cuz I hadn't really looked at her bowel movements since she was three. Now three plus years later she has no skin issues or digestive issues, unless she has gluten. Even sometimes oats because of the cross-contamination. We had taken her in 4 years earlier to get tested for food allergies and it was a waste of time and money. Anyway, just a thought to consider, because like I said... Described was exactly what she was dealing with and it was so horrible and stressful. She had such sensitive skin as a baby too because of all of it!
I am considering going back to my keto diet again to see if that helps. I had no breakouts while I was on that for almost two years. Diet definitely can have an impact on autoimmune responses
Thank you! How do you know what classes count toward The GPA? Thanks
That’s up to you as the teacher (or your state may have rules about certain classes being pass/fail). I count all their courses on the transcript towards the GPA
Thanks 😊
Sending thoughts and prayers that you and your doctors figure things out.
Praying for you, Abbey! So thankful that your biopsy came back okay.
Abbey…thanks so much for the update! I can’t Believe with how busy your May was you were able to get so much still done. So thankful that you’re doing okay health wise and so glad you took time off from YT. I agree that women’s health is not discussed enough on YT or anywhere…especially menopause! As it sounds like you have another busy month coming up I pray you are still able to find some rest time for yourself. Just a suggestion but I would 100% try and get away with your daughter this coming month and make some good memories with her. ❤️
I’m actually craving a couple of days away to relax and recharge. I have so many things coming down the pipeline in terms of projects and things I’m working on that I want to share in the future but I know I won’t be able to work well or keep up that pace if I don’t take some time away. Plus, it’s her last full year at home and my mom heart is just craving more time with with her
Abbey, thanks for the update. So thankful that everything turned out well with your testing. Take care!
I know I’m a little late, but thank you for this!! What did you use for their health credit?
Apologia Health
Thank you! I really appreciate your help!
I have items delivered to my front door that I buy from IKEA. Cost less than gasoline to travel to IKEA.
Thank you for this video. It was very helpful as I plan to have my high schooler and middle schooler use a narration journal for some of their subjects this coming year. One question...since I know that you use IEW, what has that looked like for your kids outside of the IEW curriculum? Have they found the IEW structural models to be helpful for even their narration journals? Do you require them to practice using the IEW structural models? Or would you say that their narration journal is more of a freewrite? Also, have your kids used the IEW structual models when writing papers for their literature courses and such?
I allow them to free write in their narration journals for the most part. Often they use the journals to jot down notes and illustrations. If I give a specific prompt, I do require proper grammar and punctuation
But yes we do utilize the IEW model in their literature papers. It has been especially helpful with research papers.
Hi, thanks for showing us around ❤ Could you please tell me what you use for connecting the cutting mats together? I don't think I saw it in the info
They came with little metal clamps that keep them together
I was wondering what your daughter thought of the June SAT? I think you said she was using the Prepscholar program and I was wondering what she thought? Your course looks amazing!
She thought the math portion was the hardest. She specifically mentioned that several questions were on math concepts she didn’t remember ever seeing before (which surprised me). We get her results in a few weeks and I think we’ll be able to give a more accurate review once we know how she did
@@mypracticallyimperfectlife Thank you for your reply. I hope she'll be happy with her score and I look forward to your review.
Beautiful craft room!
Thank you! 😊
beautiful craft room!!!
Thank you! 😊
I’m just curious, now that you’ve done both BB and Apologia, if you had to start high school again which would you choose for Biology? I keep going back and forth for my rising 9th grader. I’m excited to hear about the electronics course. Mine has also decided to go the trade route.
I’d go with Berean personally. We just have a strong preference for Dr Wile’s writing style and attention to detail.
Thank you!! After reading a few pages for their samples online I decided to go with Berean Builders and possibly add in some of Guest Hollow’s recommended books.
This looks great and can't wait to try it out when my kids are a little older. I love your page as my kids are getting closer to high school. You are a wealth of information and so encouraging to those of us that are nervous for the upcoming high school years.
Awesome! Thank you!
My High school NEVER told us about CLEP exams!! and I graduated 2 weeks ago! I could've taken my College Algebra CLEP last summer as a junior right after I took Precalculus. I can't believe im just now finding out about this!
It’s a great money saver on those college credits!
How do you fit all this within a 4 day or 5 week?
We do 5 day weeks, but the time needed for each subject varies. Math ALWAYS takes the longest for them. Our literature based courses (such as the Guest Hollow ones) average an hour a day. Most other subjects take 30 minutes or less on average. It just varies and we flex things if there is a longer assignment, test or project in a course on a given day
Oh I didn’t know you are in Indiana too!! How cool
This is wonderful! Thank you for putting it all together and sharing it for others to use 😊
obviously the taxes are American based, how many subjects are more generic that would apply to others living anywhere not in the U.S.?
I believe all the other employment, job application info should be fairly universal. I don’t know enough about how other countries approach banking, home and car ownership and retirement plans to answer on those The majority of the other topics and activities from the suggested readings and videos should be appropriate for many
What are the writing assignments like with BJU Press Fundamentals of Literature? Is it enough to prepare them for writing papers?
In my opinion, no. There are not many writing assignments and limited instruction. BJU sells a separate writing and grammar course , so I believe they cover that all more there than in this course.
This looks amazing! Definitely will be purchasing for my upcoming 9th and 10 graders. Thank you! 👍🏼👍🏼
Wow!!! This sounds fantastic!
