I agree. I love seeing what artists like Tom McDonald are doing. He is completely independent. He owns all of his music. All of it. He's got multiple billboard top 10's and 1's. Went from nothing to millionaire several times over. This computer age can eliminate the old industry. I'm OK with that. Let the artists do what they do and be rewarded for their work.

I was just going to comment on Tom McDonald! He broke the system and I’m 55 having witnessed how bad that system was for musical artists. I support Tom because of what Daryl and the others had to go through. Nothing they could have done differently in their time. That’s why it means so much now to witness a breakthrough! ❤

My late hubby was a bassist in a band in Philly (also a Temple U student) with John Oates. In fact, John left their band to team up with Daryl permanently. He said no one liked Daryl due to his arrogance! But they never blamed John for the move because Daryl was so freakin' talented.

When you're a person who's gifted with 'it' (and you know it), and you have every confidence that you're going to become a big success at 'it' if you stay your course, you're automatically different from everybody else in very obvious ways. You move in ways that are simply different, and you carry an energy that focuses you on that success. You don't allow the negative energy of other people, or 'bad luck', or unsolicited advice temper your resolve. You stay focused on your goals even when doing so means you have to suffer for a while.
Darryl had this. He had it when he was very young. When you listen to him sing live and unplugged it is very, very obvious. People who don't understand this vibe will judge and criticize, and they call it 'arrogance' because, in their minds, you should look, act, and live just like everyone else does. I've read many biographies of famous and successful people and they all describe this very thing though in different ways.

Alot I like about this video.. 1st and foremost how candid the responses are to the questions which were very poignant.. 2nd you see the journey of a musician we all know and love.. grinding away doing what he loves while wrestling with corporate music bullshit. Good stuff. Love axs

Much love to Daryl Hall & John Oates for their music. I hope they are getting paid by Spotify and other online music outlets where people can listen to their music. It bothers me that some of my favorite artists have to continue traveling and performing to earn a living after they get older. It's ok if they want to do that, but it's tough if they would like to stop traveling but have no choice.

My last name is Hall. So I always got jokes about Hall and Oates.... As a kid I didn't even know who they were! As an adult I WAS AMAZED how many hit singles one band can create... These guys ARE the 80s.

Jeez, Daryl, you are my biggest inspiration and I didn’t realize it until I got close to retiring from a very successful career as a gigging live musician. You influenced the way I sing and you made me carve a sound modeled after your vocal style. Thank you.

In 1970 I went to concert. But there was more people on stage than in audience. Hall an Oats asked us our names an information. Then they would sing, then ask more about us. It was a very person an fun concert! I thought about this small informal concert when Tom Cruise gave kid, trying to make unlimited power battery, a Hall & Oats button for his shirt.

As Daryl says, the first time around for "She's Gone" wasn't a big deal. I don't know how much airplay they got elsewhere but in my town it would only get played late at night. So night birds like me felt we had our own little band in Hall & Oates.
When they did break and "She's Gone" went big along with "Sarah Smile" I felt a little ownership of that.
After all these years these two guys are still great songwriters and performers and have always been a class act.
Not bad for a couple of guys from Philly.

They played “She’s Gone” before 20+ in the Student Union at BGSU early seventies during a bad blizzard. I called DJ friend working at a rock station in Toledo ( WIOT ) and asked him to give it some air time. He did. Then Cleveland picked that airplay up and the rest is history. Great song, great band.
