Looks like a lovely chill sail (apart from the seasickness). That anchorage looked lovely! I can see that it only took a couple of Northern winters to cure Kika of "I want to experience seasons :-)!" Glad the furler wsasn't a serious problem.

I load ships of all sizes and different products. On a ship loaded with raw logs we build a temporary walkway on top of the deck load of logs from the bridge/pilot house forward to the bow of the ship. Often, once these ships get out to sea the crew dismantle and toss overboard the temporary walkway. 2x4s 2x6s 2x12s . Other times weather and waves wash this walkway off the ship.

    Love your channel.
I have some experience with motion sickness, which seem to be an ongoing issue with many cruisers. It has been my experience, and anxiety aside, motion sickness may be caused by sensory confusion. Without an distinct horizon your eyes, which your brain heavily relies on (80%+) to orient your spatial position, say "I'm not moving". This conflicts with your inner ear sensory input which say "I'm moving". The conflict makes your motion sick. I fly and boat. The only time I have experienced this was my first :30 minutes as a guest aboard a moving submarine. As soon as I was offered a seat at the helm of the sub, which included artificial horizon instrumentation similar to an airplane I felt better. You can now display on virtually any mobile device an artificial horizon. It is included in most navigation apps. Dark night, no horizon, few stars, rolling and pitching boat? Just launch an app with a gyro-stabilized artificial horizon and keep it in view. Your brain and stomach will thank you!
    Cheers

As much as I am happy for you to be back somewhere warm I have to say I've loved that you explored the northern extremities of this planet. Few others seem to do it so it was some welcome yin to go with all the yang, or vice-versa. Sail on! I'll be shocked if you don't end up doing some antarctic exploration at some point - at least to the Falklands.

I love how you share what offshore cruising realy looks like. Beeing on watch from 2 to 8 am feels like a long time when you are at the border of seasickness. On my first long passage i did the 4 to 8 am watch and when the autopilot broke it studently felt a lot longer 😅

    • @stopthephilosophicalzombie9017
      @stopthephilosophicalzombie9017 2 роки тому +1

It makes me wonder if autopilot actually makes night watches harder. I suppose with modern amusements like Ipads you can totally distract yourself if you don't have to be on the tiller the whole time.

Hi guys from the Maldives. Love your ingeneius d.i.y upgrades on your boat. Love the comradreship both you have, which is important to keep morale up when the stressful situations arise in sailing. You both are an inspiration to many couples who dream of living on a boat and sailing around the world.

    • @cdreid9999

Their upgrades are extremely underrates. Ship designers like semi designers are stupidly traditional and most boats have horrible interior design. They did SIMPLE things that are brilliant

Furler Problem... Love your channel. Awesome that you two came from such distant origins (with a pitstop in my southeast Pennsylvania) to be on this amazing adventure. This lake sailor is jealous. I learn more than I can teach, but was wondering... was your furler problem maybe just from not keeping some tension on the furling line when you were unfurling the jib? That was definitely a problem I experienced and learned on my first sailboat- Buccaneer 18. Would result in a rats nest and make furling impossible. Stay safe and keep up the great videos. -Jim

Kika & Dan, one more amazing video. Following you for so long, and sailing with you when not sailing myself. In previous videos I saw how you unfurled the genoa without retaining a bit the caller rope, and wondered how you managed not to get a mess at the furler roller. Maybe, if you retain a bit (only t be tight instead of loose) the furler rope while you are unfurling, you help the rope not to tangle at the furler. Cheers!!

DAN ...There have recently been Orca attacks to sail boats off of Spain and Portugal . One boat off Portugal was actually sunk in the process . The Orcas mainly take bites of the rudder and steer the boat then take pieces of the rudder . They reccomend certain procedures to follow should you encounter this pod of Orcas . I hope that you don't encounter any problems.

I went to the merch site (which says page not found) but I didn’t give up. I finally found it because I want to show my support. I planned to buy a bathing suit, but $200+ is way out of my budget. I thought my $80 suit was a huge splurge. Sorry. I live in Hawaii on a fixed income. I can’t imagine being able to afford that. If you can, you don’t need my support. Maybe find a way to sell reasonably priced merch. My first lesson in business was “A nickel today is better than a dime tomorrow “.

VYI, no motor, including boat motors, like to be throttled up immediate after starting. Thermal expansion is best kept at the lowest levels practical. Start, idle for a minute (in gear is fine, so you're making headway). Then, half throttle for a couple of minutes. After five minutes, go for broke. Otherwise, weird things happen, like leaky head gaskets...

As there bloody well isn’t anything on the docks & it’s a bit of a fiddle to get the fuel! I remember they had a wagon or a trailer that they rolled down the dock? to be honest, I don't really get sick often. I get uncomfortable (queasy) the first 2days of a long passage. So I usually eat light and drink lots of water and don't stare a my screen too long those first days and I am fine. But I only got to the point of throwing up 2 or 3 times in the last 7 yrs and all of them were due to me ignoring the clear signs of what I should not be doing before an offshore passage (ie. eating a hefty meal then trying to watch a movie on day 1 😂)

There is a method of anchoring our dingy off a beach to prevent getting banged up in even light surf or continuously being dragged up the beach. We put a waterproof pulley on the end of the anchor chain and run an endless loop of line through the pulley. The anchor was dropped offshore and the endless loop brought ashore. Tie the dinghy painter to the endless loop and pull the dinghy out beyond the surf line. Tie the end of the endless loop to something onshore. Worked well.

Down below is the worst place to be in rolling, bumpy seas. The best place is to be outside, in the breeze, standing up, looking at the horizon, counteracting the roll of the boat with your legs. You cannot do that forever, so the next best place is laying down in the cockpit, in the breeze.

I hit a 2x4 once square on the keel so it balanced perfectly, so I was almost stopped from 6 knots. I couldn't get it off by turning and I couldn't knock it off with a pole. Eventually, I had to start the motor and back off of it.
Another time I hit what I assume was a log at 2am. It missed the keel and hit the rudder hard enough to knock the autopliot off line. It didn't appear to do any damage beyond scaring me half to death.

Galicia. Rias Baixas. Nothing better... Islas Cies with the most beautiful beach in the world, per Conde Nast ranking... hope you've enjoyed it, and avoided the orca pod that attacks sail boats in Galicia and Portugal!!

Best watch out if you plan to sail down the coast of Portugal because attacks by orcas on sailing vessels is reaching a point where some yacht owners are saying they will no longer sail down the Portugese coast. According to the Times of London, "incidents off Spain increased last year, the coastguard barred boats under 15m from the Bay of Barbate and an area off the Galician coast" and "With encounters expected to escalate this summer, the Atlantic Orca Working Group has issued advice for mariners approached by orcas. Recommendations include stopping the boat; furling the sails; contacting the coastguard on VHF channel 16 or by phone on 112; letting go of the wheel to avoid injury; remaining quiet until the interaction ends and then, if necessary, requesting a tow to port".

Have you tried eating ginger for sea sickness. It really works well. Used it loads of times and find it works for most people. I know even have it in pills rather than raw.

I stopped sailing at night, because I felt so scared. The seas were angry, and the winds were howling when we were sailing the San Juan Islands in Canada and northern Washington, USA. We dropped our anchors in James Islands, in 12 feet of water; close to the beach. We always look for a cove, but according to our charts, we were too far away from any cove. After that nightmare we always planned at least a cove to spend a night. A marina is always a welcomed sight.
