I sent this vid to a friend that is interested in sailing saying, "It is great because it illustrates many things about sailing short handed (and even single handed as she handles tacking alone while he is below), points of sail, tacking, reefing, going on deck when it's bumpy under sail, anchoring, anchor watches, and docking. One of the best vids I've seen and with some great filming to boot. It is one I could watch repeatedly and glean info from it each time." Again, nice job!
Sailing in a racing boat teaches cruising sailors the way to seek out lifts and avoid the knocks that abound in sailing similar situations and conditions, pointing up in the bullets and then racing off with it. Seems you had a lot of leeway in those tacks, you did well. great editing and sailing.
Yep. Absolutely agreed. This is some fantastic sailing and one of the quintessential aspects of thischannel that I adore; the choice to sail over a simple motor upwind
@@KrisSanders Their conscious decision to go electric was monumental. It shaped their sailing philosophy for the rest of their time outfitting the boat and becoming better sailors in the process. Utterly fascinating process that will be invaluable to thousands of aspiring cruisers the world over. Granted as they became more popular the quality of their gear has become increasingly cutting-edge (and expensive) but they still showed a path toward doing much of the expensive refitting work yourself if you have the knack to do that kind of thing (which you should if you want to be a true sailor).
I've already known this, but this video reminded me how competent Kika is at handling the boat. Single handed, tacking in inland waterways is no joke. All while Dan is making coffee.
Not taking anything away from Kika, but when the sailing is rough all hands need to be on-deck. Dan was right, some of those tacks looked like crap. Maybe you could have pulled off the same sail in 38-39 tacks. That is also when you need some crew. You can only take so much of that type of exertion before you collapse. Someone has to keep the crew fed so they have the energy to work. The cinematography in the landscape shots was amazing. Breath taking even! Thank you!
I was just thinking that this episode was a clear example of their motto, “In no hurry to go anywhere, ever.” Sure, other sailors would fire up the engine and motor in, but to what end?To get to the pizza place sooner? Who else can say that they once spent 7 hours making 42 tacks to go 13 nautical miles on the longest navigable fjord in Norway? With these two, the adventure is the journey...and the destination.
I did a miniature version of that once. It was in a small day sailer in light wind in a sound with lots of motorboats and the occasional cruise ship. We spent half an hour making 10m tacks (as to not get into the middle where cruise ships and other big boats go), and got nowhere, because of bow waves from other boats. Only when the traffic died down could we break free from the sound onto more open waters and get home. We didn't have a motor. The only alternative was to drag the boat along the shore with a long line, but the shoreline is mostly cliffs and jags in and out. Fun times.
I've tacked up a winding tiny canal, at some points almost dead into the wind. I think it was about 40 m wide at best. 6 m open sailboat. Took ages but was lot's of fun.
Clearest example**** so many earliest day commenters commenting on how Uma should be with diesel this diesel that which was according to THEIR sail/boating lifestyle. Reason why sailing forums suck mostly

However I only recently found your channel, and during the second covid lockdown here in England I have been able to experience life afloat, albeit vicariously, through your wonderful videos. Excellent sailing. Superb single-handed tacking, Kika. Loved the shots of Uma heeled over while cutting the white caps, some of the best Uma sailing footage I've seen. You may not want that kind of sailing every day but being challenged occasionally helps hone the skills and clear the mind. Great team work as well.
Excellent sailing? Did you see the track? They come use some sail trimming tips. You might noticed that the vang was off upwind which would’ve flattened the main. When the traveler is all the way down and the main is let out, the boom moves up an the main is fuller.
I love the way Kika helms with those little legs wide apart to make herself more stable! Wide base and lower centre of gravity works every time. Stay safe you two. Winter is coming and the days are shortening. People may be jealous of your life-style but fail to realise that you risk everything you own every day.
Another great episode, thanks! Regarding the anchor: “Weigh anchor is a nautical term indicating the final preparation of a sea vessel for getting underway. Weighing anchor literally means raising the anchor of the vessel from the sea floor and hoisting it up to be stowed on board the vessel. At the moment when the anchor is no longer touching the sea floor, it is aweigh.”
Wow, that was sailing! The wife and I had our first charter, just the 2 of us, this summer on Lake Michigan. We were cruising along in 10 knots with full sails, and then the winds jumped to 25 continuous. I learned about "rounding up" that day, and, that night, talking with some other sailors, learned about easing the main as the first step in that situation. Watching this brought all those memories back clear as a bell.

I used to think Uma had a strange helming position but I can now see how great it is for single handing! Kika made those tacks looks super easy - I have to tack from in front of the wheel which can be a bit tricky in a seaway!
I agree. I am/was of the same opinion, including the traveller across the cockpit, but Kika expertly demonstrates just how convenient it is for short-handed sailing.
I am in Chicago, IL USA, and have enjoyed binge-watching all of your steps. I always think that the last episode that I have watched is the best, but this one is truly superb. Nice reply, thanks Mark; especially for implicitly suggesting what sound like it’s going to be a great read (Sea Wife by Amity Gage), hoping it’s in an Audible/AudioBook (format).
You are looking like a real sailor now young lady, single handling the boat, tacking back and forth, wrapping and unwrapping the winches. I know that dance well, and it looks like after all these years, you have the stance and dance down well. Bravo.

This is how you get good. Tacking like this is good for the soul. Well done, reminds me of my first night sail. We were in the straits of Juan de Fouca, and had wind and tide against us for the Midnight watch. We tacked every 20 min or so, and made zero headway. But we got good at tacking. Keep it up you guys, great content, real sailing.
Je me souviens que dernièrement une personne vous avait reproché de ne pas faire assez d'images de voile ...j'espère qu'elle regardera cette vidéo...et là elle sera servie. encore merci pour ces images magnifiques de très haute qualité I remember that a person recently criticized you for not taking enough pictures of sailing ... Yes, Stein! Pleasantly, welcomingly addictive. Shopify has assisted in the creation of my own (personal) ‘Sailing Uma’ playlist; thus, broadening my taste in Indie, Indie music.
Capt. Kika outside fighting the rain, wind, and sea like a pro while Dan was inside having his coffee where it is warm and dry. Kika I hope Dan brought you a cup of coffee. Beautiful scenery, great video. Each video is amazing. Thank you for taking us along on your journey.
Breathtaking. The scenery was spectacular, the adventure amazing. I just woke up, and I was exhausted just watching. Now I’ve got to go get my breakfast...at least I won’t have to wait 7 hours and 45 minutes to find it. 👍👍
This is one of the sailing channels that inspired me to get my own sailboat. None of those inspirering channels dealt with typical fjord sailing condition. And thats all thats awailable to me :D . I very much appreciate your showcase of this. Cheers from the Stavanger region!
Excellent short tacking. The art is all in the timing - casting off the sheet without snagging and getting the jib pretty much sheeted home on the other side before the weight of the wind gets on it. It’s obvious watching you that you are well practised. Takes me back to many years exploring the rivers, estuaries and lochs of England, Wales and Scotland and later, here in New Zealand. Would have loved to have had self-tailing winches in those days. Happy days.

Wow. Wow and wow again. What a beautiful, amazing, thrilling, exciting professional yet humbling video this is. You two people are simply amazing. Iv thrown out my tv. Wa totally immersed in everything you were doing here. Such perfect tacks, timing, attention to the wind, depth of water.... just everything. I was there with you on every tack.. there with you for the 8 hours.. no food, just total focus and attention to get the job done, you two are amazing. Thank you so so much...!! Fair winds......👊👊
I am sure you’re providing great entertainment for the people on shore. Some are saying “look at those crazy people” and some, like me, are saying “I wish I was out there with them”. You’ve earned your dinner tonight.
Lovely start to the Vid, amazing scenery so heartwarming. I'd love to hear how your fireplace is performing and how much driftwood your burning. Stay Safe and stay warm.
That was fantastic, and yes, great exercise. Kika is such a badass sailer, I love it. Man did she show some game face on docking, so funny. Thanks for taking us along guys. So cool. Love ya.
Well that should definitely make the folks that wanted more sailing very happy. It was fun to watch and beautifully done. And getting to see the scenery surrounding Uma, a huge bonus.
Biggest pespect for your work . Itsreally impressive how you have evoluted over time from your first videos to here. Sailing skills, video making, charisma ! Take care & keep it going saluti from Italy
I haven't watched all your videos, but this is my favourite so far! Reminds me of sailing to get out of the Bay here on the Northeastern coast of Newfoundland. Laughed out loud when you were reviewing the distances and tacks at the end. 😂
Kika is EPIC on the single-handed section!! And the absolute concentration with the forward and reverse on the motor coming into the dock!!! Kika! You are my HERO!!! Dan!!! I kinda laughed a bit when you were at the helm on the easy downwind section but yeah, a LOT of hard sheet pulling prior to that! I haven't done much sailing. A small bit on a 26 foot day sailor and then I made a sailing rig for my canoe... and managed to get it to go UP WIND! I was so happy when that actually worked for me! Tacking like you did but up a "fiord" lake! Love your vids! You two are inspiring!
I believe that the area you are in is the habitat for the Norwegian Blue Parrot there are many in the wild though they tend not to fly much preferring to cling to a branch and not move which makes them hard to spot. Beautiful Plumage though :)
It's lucky both of you, sailing the monohull where can pass the canals .... so not only the ocean but mountain, land & village .. how lucky you are 👍👍👍
Doing it the hard way...not a good advertisement for electric drive, but true legends. Never seen the option of 1440p before. Absolutely brilliant. And, the audio was spot on, like setting the standard...hard act to follow
Canada has similar sailing in the Pacific Northwest. Hope you make it there some day! It's amazing, not to be missed, too! (Northern Europe is on our bucket list ...)
A bit like the lochs of Scotland. A lot of tacking on offer in tight quarters have tested is a few times, though we have a big diesel engine to assist. I blame you guys for me buying the boat 😁
4 minutes into the video and I am tearing up because of your filming skills and the beautiful scenes you have captured! You guy’s nailed it with those wild scenes through the fiord!
Beautiful and fun to watch! Thank you. Great way to get in your exercise. The saloon reno is impressive. Kudos! I eat my heart out watching the adventures of so many world sailors on youtube. The main thing holding me back is that I have no talent at repairs and maintenance. I know a lot of folks who have a world of skill and I don't understand why they don't take a year or two to travel aboard. What a way to see the world. Been to the Caribbean and Bermuda... always just days away from professional support.
I enjoyed watching this video. My arms got wore out just from sitting in my recliner! I'm 74 now but did a LOT of sailing in my younger years. Nothing can beat it!! Well.....
Brilliant sailing! And most certainly everything is within walking distance if you're prepared to walk. Just a few years ago I regularly walked 15km to work in mornings. It took me 2 and a half hours to walk. But certainly shorter than your 8 hours to tack the fjord. That was a well deserved pizza! And thank you for sharing sharing. Absolutely love your channel.
What an elegant, enjoyable video! This is the content that keeps me coming back: beautiful scenery of a less-traveled place, smart and kind hosts, and awesome seamanship.
You guys deserve extra credit for not running the motor till the very end. You're not just adventuring on a boat, you're sailors in the most literal sense of the word. Something most youtubers don't get to claim.
It will be interesting to see where they spend their winter. Surely it's too late in the season to sail back across the English Channel and South to warmer waters?
Just a tip from an offshore racer. When the wind strength is highly variable rather than having to reef and unreef the main you can pull it all the way up the traveller and ease the main sheet. This will spill wind without the main flogging and still allow you to point as high as your headsail will permit. Gotta make sure your vang is completely off because the spilling of the wind is achieved by the boom lifting in the gusts and opening the leech at the top of the main. Just an idea.
WOW, just floored by the handling and at times I lost my breath for yuz guys! But, Why am I not shocked, Ok 41 times in 10 miles and 7 hours is extreme, yet I have been in that situation!!!! That is so wild and one reason my husband almost never went sailing again!!!! How can you assure someone that it's not like that all the time when they do not go sailing on a regular basis???!!!! We were on The Adriatic in Croatia!
Typical cruisers spend more time anchored or docked or at shore than actually under way. For me anytime I get to sail and handle lines and “do stuff” is exciting. Even if it’s challenging. Uma may not be typical cruisers but you see they still stop and relax often. Never in a hurry to go anywhere is the best mantra to live by.
Some years ago I bought a stripped out yacht 34ft and rebuilt her which included a Junk Rig single mast. With a well designed sail she is as close winded as you will ever need. Tacking is a simple helm down and turn. Reefing takes seconds and is effortless. Just when effortless and safety is the most important. For cruising there is no better rig.
"The dawn came late and the breakfast had to wait...." Yeah, with a limited amount of "fuel" (amps) you have to become real sailors. Here, you broadened your experience.
@@jamespotter936 Never said they weren't. They themselves commented that a 43 tack day was exceptional, so their level of experience was broadened by having to do it. Most boaters with diesel auxiliaries would have motored in that situation. My point is their auxiliary power is like having a diesel with only a 2-gallon fuel tank. For a really difficult situation that may stretch out for hours, they don't have the easy answer of just firing up the diesel and running it for as long as needed. Many diesel auxiliaries can supply days of continuous running at an economical power setting and many hours at full power. Their electric setup has plenty of thrust, probably as much or more than the original diesel, but it can deliver full power for only a short time. Being good sailors is not optional in their case.
I used to work on a cruise ship (royal Caribbean jewel of the seas), and we did a cruise to Flåm at the summer solstice of 2008 - up the same fjord you guys are on. I remember it was the most absurdly beautiful place. The mountaintops still had snow and there were epic waterfalls and little towns all along the fjord. I really wanted to explore them, but had to be satisfied with just watching them go by from my treatment room window in the spa. I’m eagerly awaiting your videos. Hope to see some more of all those little towns. Thank you!
Kikka doesn't need a gym for her morning workout just a morning tacking exercise. Uma was looking good going into those swells as you were heading down the fjord, look like it will handle most seas. Again, another video from Captain kikka and First mate Dan.

Norway is such a beautiful place! The opening sequence was truly beautiful
Tout à fait magnifique
Great editing of your footage. Really gives the feel of what it takes to go to windward in a narrow passage. I was exhausted after 20 minutes.
Je me souviens que dernièrement une personne vous avait reproché de ne pas faire assez d'images de voile ...j'espère qu'elle regardera cette vidéo...et là elle sera servie.
encore merci pour ces images magnifiques de très haute qualité
I remember that a person recently criticized you for not taking enough pictures of sailing ... I hope she will watch this video ... and then she will be served.
thank you again for these beautiful images of very high quality
The audio quality in your vids are stunning amazing! The balance of volume when switching and fading between talking, music and ambiencesound is so incredible flawless! Professional sound editors will envy your skills. It make watching other YT`s vids annoying
Yes, Stein! Pleasantly, welcomingly addictive. Shopify has assisted in the creation of my own (personal) ‘Sailing Uma’ playlist; thus, broadening my taste in Indie, Indie music.
The coloring, the storytelling! Damn!!!
Capt. Kika outside fighting the rain, wind, and sea like a pro while Dan was inside having his coffee where it is warm and dry. Kika I hope Dan brought you a cup of coffee.
Beautiful scenery, great video. Each video is amazing.
Thank you for taking us along on your journey.
LOL that was one moment he was making coffee... Dan was on the decks running around like crazy, tacking with Kika the rest of the time!
Breathtaking. The scenery was spectacular, the adventure amazing. I just woke up, and I was exhausted just watching. Now I’ve got to go get my breakfast...at least I won’t have to wait 7 hours and 45 minutes to find it. 👍👍
Thank you for my morning nature Sail your nature footage was absolutely Beautiful loved the editing .
This is one of the sailing channels that inspired me to get my own sailboat. None of those inspirering channels dealt with typical fjord sailing condition. And thats all thats awailable to me :D . I very much appreciate your showcase of this. Cheers from the Stavanger region!
Me to
Excellent short tacking.
Happy days.
These movies I mean videos are getting good. Excellent work! Thank you so much!!!!
I went back to the beginning and started to watch your old videos and Kikas accent has become less and less. It’s awesome to see how far you guys have come with your boat and adventures. It gives people like me and my fiancé who are completely refitting a 1977 $3600 boat hope that one day all the boat work will end!
Exactly the kind of mini adventures that got me interested in Uma. :) Great "Step"!
Excellent question!
I know you're not supposed to sit on the couch but your videos are so high quality that I have to watch them on the tv ;)
Really impressive
Kinda reminds me of driving a manual transmission...on the hills of San Francisco...in the rain
only with a workout included!
You are correct.
There's definitely a drifting joke in there somewhere....
That was fantastic, and yes, great exercise. Kika is such a badass sailer, I love it. Man did she show some game face on docking, so funny.
Thanks for taking us along guys. So cool. Love ya.
The drone footage is amazing! I guess that towing that dingy made it even more challenging!
Which program do you use for video editing?
The same editing program we used since step 1... We have final Cut.
A sailing site with great sailing, boat handling, and wonderful background music, you two are the best
Any Monty Python fans here...?
@@1biosphere88 Yup.
HELLO POLLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Glenn edwards They must be pining for the fjords...
Sometimes they nail themselves to that branch when they’re all tuckered out from a long squawk.
There is some poetry in your tacking out of the same waters that our Viking brethren sailed from so long ago. Great video!
We enjoy sailing more that we enjoy motoring. Even if we had a diesel, if there is wind, we'd be sailing.
Skjolden is a very nice small community, beautiful location for hiking too.
Excellent vid! You guys are true sailors. 99% of people would have fired up the motor. Impressive!
Its nice to see you are looking after the shop, whilst Dan makes the coffee
Loving the waterfall footage!
4 minutes into the video and I am tearing up because of your filming skills and the beautiful scenes you have captured! You guy’s nailed it with those wild scenes through the fiord!
Nothing can ever 'top' your videography & sound choice :-)
Beautiful and fun to watch! Thank you. Great way to get in your exercise. The saloon reno is impressive. Kudos! I eat my heart out watching the adventures of so many world sailors on youtube. The main thing holding me back is that I have no talent at repairs and maintenance. I know a lot of folks who have a world of skill and I don't understand why they don't take a year or two to travel aboard. What a way to see the world. Been to the Caribbean and Bermuda... always just days away from professional support.
Well, I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m exhausted! Feel like I need some of that pizza and a beer. Good job guys!
😎✌️🤙🤘😎
I enjoyed watching this video. My arms got wore out just from sitting in my recliner! I'm 74 now but did a LOT of sailing in my younger years. Nothing can beat it!! Well.....
Stunning scenery and you do it absolute justice with your camera work! Easily equal to a David Attenborough production ❤️
Gorgeous filming! Thanks!
What an elegant, enjoyable video! This is the content that keeps me coming back: beautiful scenery of a less-traveled place, smart and kind hosts, and awesome seamanship.
What an amazing sail! Tiring, but exhilarating: to me, the best kind😊.
You guys deserve extra credit for not running the motor till the very end. You're not just adventuring on a boat, you're sailors in the most literal sense of the word. Something most youtubers don't get to claim.
Try heading for the baltics, Stockholm and other cities near the baltic ocean are amazing, Estonia, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, etc.
It will be interesting to see where they spend their winter. Surely it's too late in the season to sail back across the English Channel and South to warmer waters?
@@Phyde4ux somewhere hot I think, I agree with you.
The red headed blue eyed giants will help you😘
Yes, on a tour of the seven sees, don't miss the Baltic see, and all the islands, big and small.
I am a bit biased, living in the archipelago between Sweden and Finland, but hey guys I promise, you will not regret.
Just tell him, that's the part of the adventure. And adventures aren't always fun, while they are happening.
Golf stream is amazing! In Moscow is snow already although Russian capital much southern then Norway
A lot of couples are making sailing videos these days...you two stand out with your intelligence, maturity, and sincerity.
Hello from Crete, have a nice adventure over there!!!
Love the Scottish Highland fold! We raise them on our farm in Michigan. Such awesome cattle! You two are outstanding!
"The dawn came late and the breakfast had to wait...." Yeah, with a limited amount of "fuel" (amps) you have to become real sailors. Here, you broadened your experience.
"When the gales of November came slashin'" Lets hope this voyage ends differently.
@@Phyde4ux Dang why would you even say that?
Really, all the sailing they have done over the years they are all ready "Real Sailors"
Good ol' Canadian song 🤣
I used to work on a cruise ship (royal Caribbean jewel of the seas), and we did a cruise to Flåm at the summer solstice of 2008 - up the same fjord you guys are on. I remember it was the most absurdly beautiful place. The mountaintops still had snow and there were epic waterfalls and little towns all along the fjord. I really wanted to explore them, but had to be satisfied with just watching them go by from my treatment room window in the spa. I’m eagerly awaiting your videos. Hope to see some more of all those little towns. Thank you!
Great video. Beautiful waterfalls. Great trip.
+1
Kikka doesn't need a gym for her morning workout just a morning tacking exercise. Uma was looking good going into those swells as you were heading down the fjord, look like it will handle most seas. Again, another video from Captain kikka and First mate Dan.
That’s why Viking ships had oars...
That, and square rigged main sail...
@@JAKDK-dh3us
The oars were there because the sails were only useable with fair winds.
Without the oars they were pretty much useless.
@@charlesharper2357 I agree.
But oars were still only used to navigate inlets, rivers and Russia.
@@JAKDK-dh3us
They were also used offshore in windless or adverse conditions according to the crew of a longship replica I talked to.
Now that's a SAILING video. Great job.
Wow, you did get some exercise for sure. Good job rather tricky sail for sure.
Awesome to watch some sailing while being stuck at anchor. Thanks for making lockdown a little easier guys! Looked like an epic sail
Gorgeous cinemaphotography and outstanding editing. Stay safe. Greetings from now-frozen Ottawa after a week of freakishly warm weather.
Your videos with excellent drone shots are continuing to improve. Loved the Steps 240-244. Keep up the good work.
