Found your channel in the first weeks of lockdown, was on the Extremely vulnerable list so had a stay at home order for 18 months, not only did Dan's technical wizardry and Kika's charm keep me sane it was a delight that filled my days with binge escapism. Have to confess I am rather besotted with your obvious love for each other, I feel privileged to witness and share your adventures. Long may they continue. 💜

The rabelo boat is a traditional Portuguese wooden cargo boat that was used for centuries to transport people and goods along the Douro River. It is flat-bottomed, with a shallow draught, which was necessary to navigate the often shallow fast-flowing waters of the upper Douro.
The name rabelo means 'little tail', on account of the long timber projection from the rear of the boat which is used to steer the vessel. Although not in commercial use anymore, these vessels may still be seen, belonging to port wine companies, along the river in Porto and Gaia.

The problem you have with the headsail jaming from time to time is that the knot of the halyard, which attaches the halyard to the cylinder of the headsail at the top of the mast gets caught sometimes and thus not being smooth to unroll . I had this problem and it was solved by changing the angle of the halyard at the top of the mast.. this is done with a kind of jib lead ,which is a short tube that acts like a guide being fastened to the mast at the top. I don't know if I have been able to explain myself but I would like to send you a photo and you can see exactly what to do. It just took 20 minutes .If you ever come to Alicante spain, it would be a pleasure meeting you. I have a Oceanis 38.1 in the , Real Club de Regatas of Alicante. Next year the Volo race will be starting there! keep it up you wonderful couple!

Look, I am always aware of the fact that the production quality of your video's is among the best of the channels I regularly visit on YT. I know that, because every episode is entertaining, informative, fun and enjoyable to watch. In a way, almost like coming home. Half of that is because of the content (what you do, how you do it and your personalities while experiencing that), but the other half is due to the way it is presented. Somehow this episode made me appreciate that production quality even more than other times... the shots, the editing, the music, the choices you made about what and how to show it in which order... Suddenly I was more aware than other times what an amazingly professional level you have reached throughout the years. And so I felt I had to point this out to you, to compliment you both (but I feel maybe Kika a bit more, no offense Dan). Keep this up, you are among my favorite things to watch on any medium. Much love from the Netherlands!

The old fashioned barrels on the barges are very traditional. With a sailing ship from the 14’th, 15’th, 16’th’ 17’th century was it was rated for tonnage it wasn’t the tons the ship weighed, or displaced, or even the weight the ship could carry. The tons listed were how many tuns of wine the ship could carry. A tun is 252 gallons of wine and would weight a long ton, which is heavier then the more commonly used short ton.

FINALLY, you guys get to properly geek-out! It only took eight years to get to Continental Europe, but now you can spend eight years exploring all of it. As beautiful as the Arctic was (and it was stunning) seeing these views makes my heart melt! You'll have to visit the country of Georgia, this is where wine was first produced, and they still use the ancient production process using Qvevri, which are huge earthenware vessels. If, by chance, you guys don't really like Vino Porto, you can use this wine in making sauces like for a good ragù. ¡Es la bomba! This was an absolutely gorgeous video, loved the overdubbing with the music of the street performers!

I suffered something similar with my furler, started to jam the halyard above the swivel. The solution for me was putting a kind of detour (semicircle rounded stainless stell in front of the mast) between the exit of the halyard at the top of the mast, and the tip of the halyard that goes to the shivel. This makes the halyard to be in a broader angle in relation to forestay and avoids the jam. Great videos as always!! Fianle get to your ariginal destination... haha

Furler issue: my rigger just diagnosed this same issue for me and his fix is to add a short dynema pennant between the jib halyard and the swivel to correct the angle. The halyard cannot run parallel to the headsstay when it connects to the swivel. This promotes fouling. The pennant should increase the angle from parallel (call parallel 0 degrees) to more like 20-30 degrees. As my rigger explained this wider angle "holds" the swivel in place and does not encourage/allow wraps or binding. I hope you had the chance to explore the Duro Valley wine region. You will never go to Napa Valley again. It is so beautiful and so innocent for a major wine region (whites and reds not just Port)

With my friends sailing in France on the sailboat Cygnus. They had the same problem with their jib, due to wear on the swivel bearing at the top. What I learned from them, you can correct it by putting tension on the halyard to correct the angle using a commonly sold part (marina store) or add a line to keep some downward pressure on the swivel, so the bearing doesn’t bind. Love your channel, quality vids and adventures. 😌

    Loved this episode!
UMA is also the enduring term for Grandma in German. Little kids call their grandma "Uma", Grandma calls the child "Mine Kline", or little one. I always wondered why you named your boat Grandma. now I finally know.... ha!
One thing I love about Portugal is their architecture. They were also conquered by the Moors like southern Spain. Their Architecture and culture is a beautiful mix of Moorish and European. They still design that way today. and their culture and ancestry is a beautiful mix of both. At the time the Moors first came, Europe was still using Roman Numerals. Higher Mathematics was all but impossible. The Moors had Arabic Numerals 12345...... this made higher mathematics practical. Europe and most of the world still use Arabic Numerals today, though most Arab script dropped them, Hence, Spain and Portugal became the centers in Europe in the middle ages for Science and Universities. They were the first to do real modern scientific navigation. Cheers!

Then I remembered your video true the Scottish canal, I watch it al couple of times, so many beautiful shots and clips. Thats when I got the idea of a video compilation of just all of those beautiful shots and clips. Is a clip possible with just those shots and cilps? Maby only those of your last year. With red silk acrobatics and songs from your playlist. And Uma in a leading role. Thanks for the journey and being the lovely and beautiful people that you are. Gr Bas

Terrific tour! And it's great to see you not having to bundle up against the cold ;) ... as I think about winter not far off here on the Chesapeake.

Agree. Cheers, the fog horn and some weird guy whistling are UMA trademarks. Take 'em away and...... OH yeah, don't forget the bathtub sized wine glass. :-) Kika's slowing down..... CHEERs ya'll !!!!
