I just started growing from seeds a couple months ago. Didn’t expect all 150+ seeds to germinate. So hopefully I’ll have a busy summer. By the way, great looking pup, gorgeous!
I’d love to see an update of your dragonfruit! I’ve just got my first two plants (they’re still tiny) and I really want to know how to care for them going forward. Thanks!
Evening! Hope you're well? 😊 Are these still growing? I picked up a dragon fruit yesterday and really excited to get started. Hope yours have done well so far!
Grew one a few years ago from fruit from the supermarket here in the UK. Gave it away though but might try again and this time up a tree like what you have done.
My mom and I recently saw dragonfruit plants at the grocery store and bought 1. We're hoping for fruit in the future It's a thick one with only a few branches and it came with a short trellis.
Hey man! That’s some AMAZING plants! I have some video suggestions! - u got lychee/litchi in New Zealand? They taste so good, to me. And in my opinion they taste like if the bubbly personality was a fruit! Lol. Kinda like longan but soo sweet and refreshing burst, is like grape, but soooooooo tastyyy!!!!! - try to grow some durian trees! Those big spiky fruits! - this one I’m more curious, I wanna see how mangosteen grows, ive had it, it taste exactly the way it looks like it would taste, pretty good. It’ll be so cool if u grew some! :) - grow some lemon or lime, oranges? That would be cool.. - passion fruit It’s an honour if you really took these suggestions! I love ur videos! Pls
Great job. 👍👍 Those plants look really healthy for ones grown indoors. Quite impressive spines. 😁 Provided it's warm enough where you are, they should really go off outside. Acquaintances of mine planted some cuttings at the base of a eucalyptus and the Pitaya grew up the tree. Just about covered the trunk and branched off all over the place; adding a bit of a rain forest feel to the garden . They flowered a lot too (at night).
I know in your country u all use the term "pitaya" as dragon fruit, but there is a problem with that dragon fruit real name es pitahaya. Pitaya, it's actually another cactus fruit. I heard alot " that is how we call it" but alot of people grt confused with this mistake pitaya is more the fruit if a columnar queretaroensis . I hope one day u all have the opportunity to try real pitayas fresh pick
Wow this is really cool. I’ve been doing some research on the hybridisation of dragon fruit such as frankies red (megalanthus x polyrhizus) and apparently they actually can produce some viable offspring. Normally hybrids of similar species are infertile as they have the wrong proportion of chromosomes, but apparently that didn’t always apply to plants.
Hey there, I live in the south island, in Blenheim, and am going to give growing dragon fruit a go, what is the best time of year to sprout the seeds here in NZ? Thanks for link to Amazing Fruits, I'll be getting some seeds from them soon.
Well Frankie's red, the orange one, is self sterile so they had to use another variety to pollinate it, resulting in a new hybrid so you won't get the exact same or a similar one, it'll be mixed. Also instead of waiting 3-5 years for the seedlings to fruit, it's better to graft them to a mature rootstock so you'll get fruit in 12-18 months
A better option is to use a stand or a tree stump at about 4 ft high to support the growing pot and it is so much easier and just let dragon fruit hang over they are easier to harvest and work on 😉
I don’t think the seeds of the top right pic at 7:36 are frankies red. The fruit look closer to Pink Panther or Sugar Dragon. Frankies red actually looks similar too the orange hybrid. If you look on the Spicy Exotics website they have a good photo showcasing what frankies red looks like.
Hi great video. I know this is a little bit off topic but I watched your video on icecream beans and was inspired to grow my own. Just wondering when I should take them out of plastic bag with paper towel because it’s starting to get mould. Thx
Hey, thanks for the comment :). Have they got any roots growing on them yet? Definitely clean them off and get them out of there if there’s mould. Feel free to send me a photo on Facebook of how the seeds look as it might be easier to find the best solution if I can see a photo :)
I bought a dragon fruit plant from a local nursery about a month ago and it's growing quite well. It's about 1/2 meter tall and has started branching out already. My variety does not have the thorns that yours has which is nice. I'll be very curious to see how long it takes for it to fruit. I've never tasted a dragon fruit before as I've never seen them for sale in a grocery store.
When planting dragon fruit from cuttings and the cutting starts to grow those shoots or sprouts which you have to prune can you plant those as well? And how fast do they grow? Do they grow slow like seeds or fast like the cuttings?
Not usually. The problem with this in a pot is that overtime it becomes too compact as there isn't the same level of soil life in a pot to keep soil loose and free draining. Potting mix is designed to stay free draining for a longer period of time. Hope that helps
Hi there. Probably only if you created a nice microclimate - for example north facing against a wall and with some protection from too much rain and water sitting around the base. Would be better in a greenhouse in Winter I would think. They don’t like frost or too much cold so depends how much protection you could offer them :)
Our winters get into maybe -2 C, so much to cold for coconuts (at least if left outside) When I moved to the city years ago I left most of my plants at my parents as I went flatting and I think it was the cold / lack of humidity that caused it to die and it wouldn’t have got the attention it needed unfortunately
@@TheKiwiGrower yes -2 is way too cold. Maybe for a few minutes. A mature tree can have -1 for a few hours. I have my coconut palm in my house in the netherlands, and it can get -10 outside. It is about 2,5 meters tall, and 6 years old. You inspired me to grow my own coconuts. My tree came as a sprout from panama. It has big feather formed leaves already. Good luck growing yours!
@@TheKiwiGrower oh, and humidity is not so important, your plant will get resistant to it after a while if it's dry more often. Humidity should be decreased over some time, because otherwise it will get a too high shock. My tree is inside my house in the winter, and no problems anymore. I can't spray water on it since my house will get wet.
Good to see fellow Kiwis here :). The big ones in the video from memory are the red fleshed type from the supermarket. Well I’m 90% sure they are anyway. I also bought a yellow fruiting variety recently too, plus the new rare seedlings in the video :).
I’m not sure what you were doing with that big tree branch in the beginning but that would be a great thing to put in the middle of a pot and have the dragon fruit climb up and it could even be in the shape of a tree that way
Yea some of them are a little on the bland side, particularly white fleshed ones. However still refreshing and a nice texture. I’ve heard yellow varieties are really good in taste!
Love your videos. My 10 yo grandson saw this and we're now on the process of soaking the seeds. Starting a legacy.
That branch is PERFECT for the support!!! What a lucky find! Great video
I like the idea of using the tree branch. You've got a good eye

Grow in own containers, keep dirt moist but not too wet too long. Keep in light and warm place.
Love it bro! Glad to see the seeds germinated well for you. Ours are coming along nicely. Looking forward to the next one :)
I just saw this and went to Marvellous Fruits to get some seeds. Looks like an interesting variety!
They look great, I've managed to get some to germinate in the UK, pretty slow growing here but they look healthy.
Nice work!

How's the dragon fruits doing? Thank you for the videos. Will try it!!
Unglaublich schön!
Interested to see how they fruit in NZ climate. I remember seeing plantations of these in Kalimantan - looked like fields full of cacti.
That’s so cool! I saw them like this on Rarotonga 😁
I'm sure the yellow varieties grow well given the tropical climate
Way Cool
Good to know Creator has way for reproduction for dragon fruit
Thank you for info

Dragon fruit, here in Brazil is known as pitaya,. 👍

Yes you can propagate the side branches as cuttings. Once the cuttings root they grow pretty fast as long as weather is warm

Around 5 years but you can speed it up by grafting a seedling onto a mature rootstock

Hi bro nice video. I'm from india and I'm also plant dragon fruit seed I got some small plants but they die here can you give any advice!!
It’s hard to know without seeing them but they do require more water than other types of cactus cause they’re tropical cactus not desert cactus :)

Sir
Dragon fruit doesn't grow true to seed. If you want a specific variety you will need to get a cutting from that specific plant.
That is for nearly everything. who cares. just grow.
Pitaya's are not dragon fruit. You're confusing pitaya with pitahaya
