- In this week’s review we’re going to take a look at Cold Fear, a survival horror game that was developed by Darkworks, published by Ubisoft and was released on the PS2 and Xbox in March of 2005.

This game was one of just two titles Darkworks developed, with their only other title being Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare. While their catalog technically consists of seven titles, one of them was a sales demo, another was a port, two were cancelled, and their last title before closing down was completed by Ubisoft Shanghai (it’s I Am Alive if you’re interested). Judging by this and The New Nightmare, Darkworks seemed to be a developer who never quite realized their full potential before their closure, which is really disheartening.
Interesting. I had no idea about the developers story. It's a shame they didn't get more chances.
Cold Fear spent quite a few years in development, Namco were originally going to publish it as a spin off of the Time Crisis series!
I think I might have preferred that.
@@RetroGameRater It would have been an interesting twist, I mean surely they saw Resident Evil 4 in previews? Even the scrapped one about ghosts had similar vibes.

I'll never forgive this game for teasing me with the idea of a zombie orca without fully delivering.
A forgotten survival horror gem by many people.
Cold Fear was very good. I liked it and I agree that people should give it a shot.
The location of a whaling ship I thought was interesting as I find those sort of ships to be repulsive in general.
The oil platform later on was very good too. That you could only save at certain points would definitely be a turn off to many.
Then you have the interesting theme song for the game . Use your fist and not your mouth by Marilyn Manson.
I'm glad I finally got around to playing it. It's been on my list for a while.
This sounds right up my alley, survival horror is something I've grown to love in recent years. This is in my backlog so might need to bump it up.

It took me a while to get round to it too.
Mainly because I purchased 2 copies of 'Cold Winter' mistaking it for this game.

I think this game has so much going for it! If it was released earlier in the PS2's life cycle I have a feeling it would have been a huge hit! At the time these graphics were fantastic too.

A terrific review, you nailed the essence of the games strong points well my friend! I personally loved it as it quickly became one of my favorite Horror/Action games on my original Xbox, I thought it's visuals were well realized & crafted, the pitching rolling ship you traverse is a highlight of the immersion for it's time. I really had few complaints with the exception of it's save system, memorizing the ship's intricate decks, compartments & inner corridors is crucial to getting through this immersive survival horror game which I personally preferred over the "Resident Evil" games of the time, one of my favorite go-to guilty pleasures on my old Xbox!
A hidden gem in every sense of the word.

Maybe this game had a slight influence on the ship section of Uncharted 3 Drake's deception? Remember how Nathan Drake had to to fight through a set of enemies while the ship was see-sawing from side to side in the middle of a seastorm? Anyway great review of a game that deserved greater recognition but was overshadowed by Resident evil 4.

I can't think of many other games with that mechanic.
Couldn’t help but laugh in the first few minutes due to how similar it looked to RE4 but Cold Fear really looks interesting. I’d like to add this to the collection.

Is actually a Sega Dramcast Carrier knock off Game. Not RE4. This type of games already existed before Resident Evil.
In all honesty I liked this game more than RE4.
RE4 is better in the first half, but once babysitting the POTUS daughter starts it quickly goes downhill.
Also didn't like the shop feature in RE4, really took the atmosphere out of the game.
definitely playing through this. the re4 thing is obvious, but this gives me a dead space vibe too.
Good review. I think Cold Fear multiple times better than re4 that I haven't even bothered to complete. CF is what I've completed many times. Few things make it. Biggest one is the setting, huge water vessel setting is about as good as it can get as there's the actual sense of being there and there's no way to escape somehow. You're stranded there and really creates great atmosphere. Second one is the controls, they're imo pretty much perfect for this type of game. Third no ridiculous puzzles "put jewel in anus of gargoyle to get butterfly wings to put in door lock" style of shit. Fourth is the inventory management things that re games have. I just hate it and it ruins immersion imo. All in all, Cold Fear is vastly underrated and unfortunately really little known game. It's really shame.

Another awesome review! Hmm... I never heard of Cold Fear - but this does look like a game I would’ve played back in the day. It does look fun. Shame it came out a month after RE 4.

Released a year earlier, things would be very different IMO.
Retro Game Rater Probably... I mean, it was pretty unique. The ship rocking and water knocking you off balance or clean off the ship. As you said, it could’ve been a sleeper hit.

I am having difficulty on this game, once you pick up the C4 charges near the end of the game. I cannot get back out because of the invisible monster that attacks you but you cannot fire because of the explosive barrels littered through the corridor. Anybody know how to do it?

I remember literally buying this game for the simple fact that re4 wasn’t available on xbox and i couldnt keep taking the bus to the mall everyday just to play the re4 demo over and over at eb games lol

Cold Fear isn’t really survival horror, more of a Horror themed shooter, like Dead Space.
I never had any ammo shortages with this game but I am very accurate with shooters. I do like this game a lot, its shooting feels great and definitely deserved some continuity.
I thought the music that plays in the credits was very dated and unfitting though. I mean, come on, Marilyn Manson? Really?
Great game, bit stiff but fun. Liked it on xbox for the 720p

It always surprised me how dumb developers/videogame companies can be! Resident Evil 4 hit the gaming world like a truck. It is one the best games ever made. And people wanted more.
Yet this game Cold Fear, a game that looks so similar, DID NOT CAPITALIZE on the Resident Evil 4 craze. That is just DUMB from a business point of view. Also, how many Gamecube owners would have loved to have this game? Again, just Dumb.
