This was one of, if not the first PS2 games I played. And at the time to me it was a huge step up. The game did (imo) an amazing job with the atmosphere, there are large sorts of RE2 were I felt safe. Not in this game.
The game was also ahead of its time in some regards. An example being the camera angles, it wasn't (always) the CCTV (or I guess second person) camera perspective that we were used to with Resident Evil, it adopted more of third person. And the weapon customisation is a common feature today. It is an integral part of the call of duty multiplayer experience and a very important mechanic in open FPS games like Far Cry or even something like Tomb Raider

remember seeing this on the shelves back when it came out, really is completely different from what i expected, cover gives hints of a tactical shooter

Recently found your channel and honestly loving the reviews of games from this period. Probably my favourite generation because I felt it was the last time all three systems were worth owning because of their exclusives. Mainly because even third party publishers were making exclusives for each system too.
This game really reminds me of how games from that period were just so weird as far as their stories went since most developers hadn't really invested in developing huge cinematic cut scenes and much of a plot still until after Metal Gear Solid 2 came out but some of the smaller developers were really willing to try new things gameplay wise and that is probably what made the PS2's early releases so unique.

This always gave me The Thing vibes but with more action. The bacteria even causes such radical mutations like it. I'm glad I remembered this game some years back and bought myself a copy after playing the hell out of the demo from one of the ps2 jampack. That ends after that one mutated soldier encounter at the elevator. And that was years ago.

I beat this game for the first time a couple of years back. It kind of reminds me of if Prey (2017) was made in 2001

Actually reading up on the game, it looks like even in 2001, this received very average reviews. It received criticism for making only minor improvements to the classic Resident Evil formula, as well as its voice-acting and straightforward, often sluggish gameplay. Many games with far superior voice-acting also released in 2001 such as Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Grand Theft Auto III, Red Faction, Final Fantasy X, Halo: Combat Evolved, Max Payne, and Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy, so I’d say Sony just dropped the ball in this regard.
The most interesting about the game is that there are many differences between the European and North American versions of the game, including a full redesign of the protagonist and re-recorded dialogue (yes, they actually went to the trouble of redoing the voice-overs in the NA version. Apparently, even these voices were still just mediocre at best, though).

Yes, I noticed some of these difference when I watched a couple videos of the game online but wasn't sure where they came from. Good to know.

Yesss so glad you covered this one!
I first played this one a demo disc and I played that demo multiple times over the years before I found a copy of the game a few years after it's initial release.
I replayed it a couple years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it.
I guess I don't mind the rigid controls of the early 2000's as I played through that era.
Much like you I'd give it a full recommendation to anyone who can still stomach the controls/playstyle of games like Silent Hill 1/2 and the early RE games.
I also think this game has enough unique mechanics to make it worth checking out if you are a fan of the aforementioned games.

Yup! Someone has been playing Resident Evil and Metal Gear Solid, lol. If I have known about this game back in the day, I might’ve played this. It does look pretty good - despite it being a Resident Evil and Metal Gear Solid clone. Awesome review as always!

I played this game in the early 2000's when I was a kid. I enjoyed the game even with the voice acting. I played the version that Dennis had the shaggy hair.
I wonder what it would look like if it was remade/reworked now with these graphics. It is 20 year's since '01, so it'd be a great time to do something like that. But I don't think that would happen. Sony isn't that way with remaking their old game's. But with what comes out is worth it.
If they do something like that I'd like to know what exactly they meant when they mention Andrew. He got KIA but don't know that much about that. With Cindy not liking Dennis because of it but again nothing really else happens.
Also with collecting the dog tags, it'd be better if they'd unlock picture's or video's of making the game or art work of it.

I can remember playing this game in 2001 at a friends house. I've tried off and on for years to remember what the game was, and only just yesterday found out that it was "Extermination". Less than 24 hours later I see a review of it on UA-cam. Super weird. I'm going to pick this up and give it a go, but it probably won't hold up to my nostalgia!

Any chance you’d review Oni for PS2? I’ve been playing it recently and it’s a game that takes me back to early 2000s. It was developed by Bungie before they were bought by Microsoft and the PS2 version was ported by Rockstar of all companies. I’d like to see your take on how well the game hold up.

Extermination is a really hard game to discuss. It felt dated in terms of graphics and voice acting rather quickly even on the PS2. There wasn't anything outstanding in the game at all. And yet, it remains one of my regular PS2 games that I play to this day. I mean, I am a bit classic survival horror fan, so there is that side of thing - it works into exactly what I love about that genre. But other than that, I admit, it really doesn't help itself in many ways. But I love it haha

I think the game aged really well. I personally find most games age well before the PS3. The games that don't age well for me are games like Fifa where the next one makes it redundant. I find a lot of games these days feel the same like all cover shooters minus the odd one feel the same just with a diffrent skin and story. So for me older games end up feeling fresh.

    • @RetroGameRater

    Best Classic game reviewer.
Late 90s from 2012 was my best gaming time, after that games become boaring for me very few games impressed me, devs are not passionate about games any more they make same shit over and over again and also games areb full of microtransaction, even single player games got Mc, like Ubisoft, Activision, Ea etc
Some Devs Are still passionate and consumer friendly like Cd Project red, Larian Studious, Obsidian and some indie devs. But triple A devs are money hungry and make low Quality games, where only Gfx is good everything else is shit

I remember playing a demo of this game when it first came out, and thought it was okay. Years later I would go on to play the game and beat it. I thought the most interesting mechanic was the weapon customization, but everything about it was either average or bad. It was not a good game then, and it definitely isn't a good game now.

    • @RetroGameRater
      @RetroGameRater  3 роки тому

The weapon customisation was a nice feature but it didn't quite elevate the game the way I wanted it to.

@@RetroGameRater That is a pretty good way of describing this game. It does have good ideas, but none of it really elevates the game play in any significant manner.

I love Extermination (before I even knew it was a SWERY game) It's number 90 in my personal top 100. But I'd never recommend any game from below the 7th gen to gamers born in the 2000's onward. For every retro game we loved as kids the current generation have a similar superior equivalent. For most 3D retro games you literally "had to have been there" when they released to fully appreciate them.

These are my exact thoughts on Devil May Cry 2 actually. People say the combat system is garbage, but I'm like, that's how all hack-n-slash games were back then. Literally, there was no other hack-n-slash action game with a combat system as complex as in DMC1.
