The Little Prince: Book Reflection

  • Philosophical books are some of my favourite ones, especially fictional ones (I definitely have a lot of exploring to do!). I recently read the book "The Little Prince" by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry and here's some reflection on it. Do you enjoy these book review -ish videos?
I have two questions that I'd love for you to answer:
What's your book-reading routine? (taking notes, reflection etc)
How would you define happiness in one sentence?

My eyes filled with tears a few times during this book, sometimes I couldn't stop crying. I was crying for my inner child. People, never forget your inner child. We are all children, after all, longing for love and laughter.

My whole life I've been neglecting reading. Only recently at the age of 17 have I come to see the true value in it. Although I realize the potential value in powerful books such as "Man's search for meaning", I struggle to grasp the potential and the lessons. Starting from tomorrow I will no longer read a book simply for the sake of reading a book, but to actually learn something, I will take notes, and perhaps, write an essay.

We can find happiness in small and simple things. My favourite is watching nature, the simply existence of plants and animals. First, like an outsider, and then realizing, that I am a part of it. It gives me so much joy, peace and the sense of fullness and balance. It's like meditation, clears my mind, recharges me fully.

Sure I can feel some degree of joy from achieving goals, but to me true happiness is in the moments I share with others I love. All of the passion in the world for what makes me happy, like playing music, shooting film, etc. is great, but to do it with others I care about greatly exceeds doing it alone.

The quote at 5:40, also the one before that... I saw that completely differently, I feel it's about how what ends up being meaningful for us is simply what we have invested a lot into it, and that doesn't mean that isn't valid. Even if in reality the meaningful person or thing for us isn't maybe objectively "special", we can choose to see it that way anyway, and it will enrich us as such.

My advice for you all is to sit down and think for yourself about what really brings you happiness, strive for it or at least try to! Once again I just want to say thank you lana you've been such an inspiration for me, I might have looked away to the other side from some of the little yet meaningful, life-changing thoughts which fortunately I could grasp on them back with you! p.s. that “we waste our time on a rose” is a strong message for me, I feel regret for wasting my time but I also dont at the same time, I’m so confused on ehat I should feel about this, sometimes maybe I really did waste my time and Im just saying i dont because of pride and sometimes i feel im just overthinking it too much ugh.

A final thought on your presentation here: marvelous. Again, you have brought out in a most delicate and artful way the issues of human culture: the mix between money and spirituality, between wealth and happiness. And remember: money brings power and influence. So as you are a moral and ethical person, you have the potential to influence political decisions which impact us all. Do we want to live in a moral and ethical world? If the answer is "yes" we are going to need a lot of people like you who are wealthy and influential by their wealth to keep us on the "right" path. And remember humans often make the right decision to live a moral life, but not always. We are "flawed" characters because we were not designed by Nature to be perfect, just adequate to survive. So we are constantly striving to guide humanity towards the path of morality and ethical behavior. It is a task, never-ending, and essential. Lana you are a great "professor" and teacher. You are a precious value to the human race. Thank you again for a thought provoking and soul searching conversation.

Happiness in one sentence? The ever evolving, never ending living quest, subject to change as one learns more about their ever evolving character.
A bit late for a response but that is what I found happiness to mean. What makes me happy today will eventually change. Learning a new piece on the piano makes me happy. Two years ago I would had said, I don’t even have a piano.
Favorite book quote-“I am a serious man.” , but he is not a man at all, he is a mushroom.
I don’t know why but that quote makes me smile, and was unexpected.

This was lovely :) After I've read a book or watched a movie, I usually write down the main thing I take away from it. I remember when I was younger I would use the blank pages in the back of the books and write down what I liked lol. What makes me the happiest is knowing that a loving God cares for us and truly fulfills us. Also spending time with people I love. For my birthday the main gift I always want is an experience, just having fun with my family. Music and writing makes me happy as well. As I've grown up, I'm learning that the world's ideas of what life should be don't give me joy or it's fleeting. I hope that you and everyone who watches this video find true happiness unique to yourselves! :)

Happiness perhaps is a reward when people finally achieve their goal after a long-term sacrificial striving. However, it shouldn't be the fundamental motivation of people's life, as explained by Jordan B Peterson in his book: " In a crisis, the inevitable suffering that life entails can rapidly make a mockery of the idea that happiness is the proper pursuit of the individual", "that a deeper meaning was required".

As for the second quote- right now I'm in a period of my life when I feel like everyone around me is extremely judgemental and that trully triggers me. They just care about people's looks, how pretty one Is, whether or not are they fat, but never think of how much this person could Have gone through, what Is their full Story, what period of their life they're experiencing and neither think about what Are these people's emotions And feelings.

Happiness isn't a specific concrete thing. It comes as a variety of little happinesses bundled together. It's a state of being. It's also not reproducible. The things that make one person happy don't make the other happy. It's something you search for and evaluate for yourself.

I liked your quote “In order to enjoy the presence of butterflies I must endure the presence of some caterpillars... patience and trust” I think in order to get what we really want we have to make sacrifices at first that may be difficult or painful IE ‘caterpillars’. It’s like when Jordan Peterson talks about how he knew he wanted to be a successful writer but he had to stop partying on the weekends so he could write the next day.
Happiness I think is aiming at the Highest Good you can conceptualize, and it happens as you pursue that goal and even sustains you through the caterpillar attacks. Like the quote “It’s the journey, not the destination” that gives us happiness. But actually reaching goals in themselves doesn’t fully satisfy, there will be always another goal to pursue, another adventure, we never stop growing.

KING SAUL hmmm good point in that focusing on what you don’t have rather than what you have is not helpful, ie you have caterpillars but want butterflies.
Surely in life we will go through seasons of abundance and seasons of drought, that’s inevitable, and a key lesson is to learn to be grateful during the droughts. However, it’s still important to have an aim, something to strive for or a goal, which also provides pleasure.

In the one about a rose, I interpret the writer as possessive. Not necessarily in a bad way, though. He’s saying that his love is stronger since the bond that was started out of all the work and effort that went into the relationship.

In a hyper-connected society, all that matters to us is other people's perceptions since we hear them all around us. Even though they are hollow, the voices define our life. Apart from that, what I believe is that Happiness is doing what you love.

Enjoyed the video tremendously. I would say she lives a very rich mental life. Compared to her, I am such a simpleton. I can't say I have ever sat down and write down my thoughts after reading a book. Don't get me wrong. I am not a person who does not really read. I read a lot, I mean a lot. But, my reading is almost all in the natural science area, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, computer science and above all, neuroscience; admiring the achievements of human intellect. I just bumped into her videos on UA-cam and her videos are mind opening for me. She is so young yet she really knows things about life and human nature. She is such a literature person. I am sure some day she is going to write some earth shattering books, or maybe she has written some already? Lana, God bless you!

On the subject of happiness, I just finished watching Ricky Gervais latest series: after life. I loved it, it was so genuine, simple and realistic. In the series, he's a guy living in a small shitty town, surrounded by people he doesn't like, doing a job he no longer cares about and he just lost his wife of 24 years to cancer. He's desperate and suicidal and he goes on these rants about life, meaning and happiness. Check it out, it's a 6 episodes series on Netflix and perhaps tell us what you think.

I had a rabbit I cuddled petted each day for many years, he loved his life eat sang all day made the cutest sounds. His partner rabbit always kept close to him but she died and soon he stopped eating was bereaved and died too. Before burying him, the intensity of heat in my body when I touched looked at him was incredible' I had no guilt, all the years and hours of loving experience shared gave me feelings of sweet bliss and very warm tears. Having no regrets guilt or shame we carry in complex human relationships.

If each of us creates our own meaning, then what happens when two people enter a room, and we each create a radically different meaning?

    • @LanaBlakely
      @LanaBlakely  5 років тому +5

Perhaps we create our own meaning for ourselves, and a different meaning with other people. So we have an independent meaning and shared meanings (e.g between husband and wife).

@@LanaBlakely I believe that there is also the reality which is beyond us. In Alaska where I lived for many years. I took people on tours to see bears. We would get pretty close without a car or fence. My reality, while important, really didn't matter compared to the reality of the bear. Who could kill you in seconds. So I laid my reality down to understand the bear's reality which was totally other. I believe it is like that with people as well.
