The Little Prince begins with an account of how the pilot drew a picture when he was a child. His picture - he called it Drawing N°1 - shows an elephant swallowed by a boa constrictor - perfectly logical to him- but to adults it was just a drawing of a hat and they roundly mocked him.
When his plane crash-lands in the desert and the little prince appears at his side, asking him to draw a sheep and then declaring himself unsatisfied with the results, the pilot brings out his Drawing N°1. “No, no, no!” says the little prince, “ And this, the pilot tells us, is how he finally found someone who understood his drawing, and how he made the acquaintance of the little prince.

Thank you!
My father gave me a copy when I was about 8 years old. I am now 67, and it is only now that I understand the message the author was trying to convey. A very simple message, but it took the loss of my wife to congestive heart failure in 2013, to open me up to understanding it on a gut level: Life is ephemeral. The time that you share with your loved ones is the only thing of true value. In your last moment, your memories of the love you shared will be all you will take with you.
That’s a beautiful comment - thank you 🙏
I always tear up when I think of The Little Prince. I teared up every time I read the book, I teared up with every movie adaptation I saw, I teared up with this video. Thank you for making it.
Thanks for watching!
The Little Prince: Great Books Explained 1693924 i think they discovered a reconditioned Cosworth with a smelly corpse of a badger next to a copy of the original manuscript in Prickkshaw....
Yes. I am bawling right now.
@@scotthunnicutt1225 The Little Prince: Great Books Explained. 17.3.24. That bad, eh? I mean, it could be worse you could be me..... I mean, that doesn't bear thinking about. Then again, you could be him....which might be 10 times worse due to such a revelation inducing a mental breakdown in the best of men...or women. Sounds like an horrendously dark and gloaming tome? King Kong did for me during my formative years so, I don't know...i aint gonna indulge myself with it. Seems best left alone....could be a double whammy 1933 King Kong and the wee fella story....stick to amusing ventures such as the listening trumpet - a tome this fella might like reviewing...?
Same here 😢
It's almost comical how many plane crashes he was in.
Almost like he's the real life Joseph Joestar
@@lukayaroslav9914 makes sense, the last illustration with the prince looked like Dio
Perfect. My daughter painted a scene with the little boy and the Fox with words that said the line in the book about being responsible for the rose. It’s an incomplete painting as she was quite good with art but her hands wouldn’t let her finish it to a final polish. It’s on a roughly made but new bird house. It’s my treasure as she died at 33. She knew she was going to die and left me with lovely memories of her inner beauty. I wouldn’t sell that bird house for a million. It was her story. A life lived as best one could. Thank you, your video was perfect.
Such a beautiful story - thanks for sharing Donna - best, james
😭💕💕
How have I reached 70+ years of age and have never read this book?! Will rectify immediately! Thank you for introducing classics in literature.
You will love it!
shyeah,.. how not??? Must. supergreat read!!!!
Never too late 😊
So ..... did you like it?
Yes, such a thoughtful read!
I read this as a child and thought it was sorta dumb. I revisited it in my late 20s and was left in tears (both happy and sad), immediately turning to the front page and reading it all over again.
I left it on the table at the coffee shop I was reading at so someone else could enjoy it too.
Love that!
I read it in my early high-school & it did hit harder because I already learnt about the issues of adults being dulls....Or maybe because it's my first for most novel to encourage me on readings.
Leaving it in public place for someone to read. That’s a beautiful idea. I might do that.
I did something similar with Alice Walker’s The Temple of my Familiar. On a flight to Austin TX I sat next to a lady that asked me what I was reading. It was my second time reading it. Once was not enough. But I couldn’t explain the layers of this novel, although I tried. She was intrigued, I was almost done reading. I hurried up and finished it and gave it to her. I was happy to do it. I hope that book gave her a feeling that all good books do. Which is to say I hope she was transported into that world, much like The Little Prince.
@@hebrewmama ooh I’m definitely adding that to my list. Thanks for your story and the recommendation 💛
I’ve recently gotten bogged down in a bunch of stupid contemporary books based off of bad recommendations and need something to pluck my heartstrings.
If you don’t cry when the fox asks the Little Prince to tame him, I don’t know what to tell you. I’m tearing up just thinking about it.
I think this is the central message of the book. Love is Time, which brings pain at parting, but joy in eternity.
Every time 😭
One of the most beautiful books ever written. Your video does it justice, James. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
My late grandmother was trying to explain this book to me. She said that Little Prince is not a sad book. For me, it was, of course, he died in the end. Now I realize that he just grew up.
This channel has turned out to be just as valuable as Great Art Explained. Thank you so much for another wonderful video.
Wow, thank you! 🙏
I was born in 1946. My Grandmother sent me my first book as a present for learning to read in 1949. I still have it in 2024. Books are still my friends and have seen me through good/bad times.
Very beautiful. 😢 I agree, books are still (and will always be) my friends. ❤️
That ending line got me. One of those lines where even if you've read it many times before, it can still bring you to tears. A timeless book about human nature. Seems truer than ever that people don't have friends because they can't buy them in the shop. Thanks for another beautiful, fascinating video.
I can’t quite put the words together without sounding sappy but I really appreciate your work. Thank you. Always calms me down and puts me in a good mood. Helping stoke my growing appetite for art and my long standing love for books. Match made in heaven for me.
Edit… I just ordered a copy.
I'm so glad!
Please do "Great Films Explained" and give the internet this trifecta it deserves!
Great idea!
I think that’s really difficult to do unfortunately because filmmakers won’t allow their work to be used on here
So true, "it is only with the heart that one can see rightly". 🦊 And my heart tells me this is a great video ❤
Thanks 🙏
Please make more of these videos. Really love the artistry in creating them, and bringing the books to life
More planned
@@greatbooksexplained371 so glad to hear. I love the series so far, and would love to see more
I wish I could give a hundred likes. "The little prince" is the book I always give as a gift to the people I meet and fall in love.
That’s so cool
Omg I’ve done the same thing
woahh same
I was thinking abt gifting it to my younger brother !!
I’m a recipient of this book by an ex. Not sure what she was trying to say tbh.
How serendipitous! I had never read The Little Prince before, and this year I set myself to reading more classics. I just finished it 2 days ago. Very good timing on this very good video.
Me too, what do you think was the lesson or lessons in the Little Prince?
Thank you for this video. Its funny how out of all the books I have read, a little children's book ended up being my all time favourite. The little prince is very close to my heart and I end up crying every time reading it
My childhood comes back to me, like finding the little prince at the desert. I can't help but cry.
Thank you for making me remember those good days when I'd reread the book for hours and hours.
Thanks James and Roger for this beautiful film. Like many children, I got my book when I was very young. I kept re reading it at intervals into adulthood and appreciated how I perceived it differently. It is my favourite gift to new born babies, hoping it will be the first book that will stay with them for a lifetime of amazement, curiosity and wonder.
We used to have a copy of this book at my family home. I read it when I was small, and it was nice, but I didn't really get what was so great about it. My mom said this is a book that only makes complete sense after someone you love dies. I read it after losing a pet and some relatives, and it did make more sense.
This last December my mom passed away, and I'm a little afraid of reading The Little Prince ever again. I'm bawling just from watching your video. Thank you for doing it, and for your two channels.
Maybe it’s too soon after your mum’s passing to read it? Give it a while until you are ready and then the book will come to you. Take care Viviane
I first read this book when I was 24 and cried so hard. One of those books that is hard to imagine someone writing and people living before the story because it seems like it must’ve always existed.
The little prince is and will always be my favorite book.
My cat died on July 31, 2024. The pain has been unbearable and this book has been my only solace. It is only with the heart that one can see rightly…
Thank you for the video and the consolation it has provided ❤
The Little Prince is one of very few books that I have found to both move me and ground me. I have collected the book in various languages and seen various films and musicals of the work from around the world. I was delighted to see the 1966 Lithuanian adaptation included in this video as it is one of the first I had seen. The tone and set design of that film I have always found to be captivating.
This book 📖 has been with me for over half a century and a copy is also in the coffin with my dearie who transitioned a few years ago. I hope a copy will also be near me when my time comes. It’s one of my favorite books ever! Thank you so much for sharing this with us! I had never seen a movie segment of Mr.Saint-Exupery until today…on my birthday!🎉❤😊A wonderful gift 💝 It’s my belief there are no coincidences…
Happy birthday!

I read this in French class in high school 60 years ago. Loved it.
This story has a special place in my heart. I always reread it when I need comfort and grounding. The important things are simple, yet as we grow "older" we lace them with unnecessary complications. Thank you for creating this segment, it's beautifully done ❤💫
Absolutely loved this book. Thank you for ɓringing it to older readers' attention and for introducing it to new readers
I first read The Little Prince in my final year of highschool. It touched me, like a kiss; and it left a warm afterglow in my lonely cynical heart.
Anyways, I hope you'll expand this channel to include books outside the Western world (such as the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, The Tale of Genji, and the Ramayana, for instance).
Thank you for making this video. The Little Prince is one of my favourite books I’ve ever read and it never fails to make me cry whenever I read it. It is deep and meaningful, even more than it was when I was younger. The fox’s lessons have shaped the way I see my relationships with others.
My introduction to The Little Prince was through someone who was at a weekend house party with me. She and I were the first ones up on the Sunday morning, and she was reading TLP, preparing a lesson for students. She tried to tell me about the book, but she spoke no English, and my high school French was pretty basic. But I understood enough that I went out and got the book, in English, and have loved it ever since. My French is still pretty basic, but I'll never forget "renard", which means fox.❤
one of the most important people in my life showed me this book, and i cry every time i read and think about this book because it reminds me of him so much. thank you for this video, it is spectacular. i hope so many more people get to read this book because of it
Elementary school teacher in France here. Every time I've had fifth graders over my career (five times), we've always studied Le Petit Prince. That book has something special, something really universal about it. It's the only unanimous piece of art I've been able to find for the kids. Even the toughest ones, when we were reading those pages outloud, they shut it and joined us in humanity as they let their sensible side exist at last.
Nowadays I'm not in class anymore, as I train young teachers. I'm honest with them when I say I probably have no easy answers for their problems in class, but I do know one thing for sure after all these years : they should study Le Petit Prince in class, as it is one of the rare things that bring us all together as human beings.
One of my absolute favorites. I never tire of it. I passed on loving it to my children, and intend to pass it on to my grandchildren (if I am so blessed. )
Thank you for making a video about my favorite book. I have read it so many times and it always makes me cry when the fox says goodbye.
One of my favorite books and was essential to shaping my worldview as a child and young adult. Along with Madeline L’Engel’s “A Wrinkle in Time”. (I’d love to see a video on that book!)
I've read this book many times and will read it whenever I am in a rush with my life.
This is one of the perfect pauses in an adult's life. Love it!
I read it when I was young, now I need to revisit. The passage about failure to make friends as we used to buy stuff just makes sooooo much sense 👏 And time saving technology not making us happy is basically sums up my life
Such a good book. I’ve read it in French and English, and cried both times. The last paragraph especially gets me every time.
Beautifully approached James. Thank you for sharing your explanation of The Little Prince as I am sure there are many who have never heard of or encountered this little jewel of a book.
Thank you. So many wonderful moments in this book. The relationship with the rose is beautiful; the fox is a forerunner to understanding the rose and her vulnerability. Favourite quote: ce qui embellit le désert, c'est qu'il cache un puits quelque part.
So much passion and knowledge condensed in wonderfully weighted videos, themselves works of art. How thankful I am and what a service it is to all of us, who had the privilege of stumbling upon your channels...
A new video on either of your channels is always such a gift! Thanks for all your hard work and research, it’s a joy to experience books and art with your narration guiding us along. The Little Prince is a masterpiece of imagination, wonderful to see it given attention here
Thank you. Great video.
One of my all time favourite books.
It always makes me cry every time I read. The fox part is so special to me, I even got a tattoo of the fox. 🦊
This book was the first book I read with my dad since he love it and was so excited to show to his little daughter. I read it again as an adult and again and again as some years go by, I always take something with me and I'll always have it in my heart as it brought the reading habit to my life and reminds me the importance of never losing the child-like wonder that keeps life light and beautiful ❤️❤️
Saw this episode with my daughter right before her teacher told her to read it before they saw a theatre play about it. Really useful information, I'm so happy I can talk to her about art and books based on your videos.
omg omg omg i can't believe a suggestion i made came to life, love this book so much i wanna cry... thank you for making this, it makes me feel better about the fact that i don't fully comprehend one of my favorite books. I hope you had a good time making it
Unexpectedly I cried. It is so true, this book. What Saint Exupery lamented. But even then there is hope because we still see things through our heart. We still invest in others and we are content to know our loved ones. And most importantly, I am content to know God, his mercy and his infinite love toward us.
was looking for a reason to take a short break, and this is it! great content as always, james!
Thank you 🙏
These videos are amazing, please make more! So lovely to revisit a favourite in a 15 minute snapshot.
A wonderful book. I have not thought about it for awhile. Probably time for a revisit.
Thanks for this lovely video! I don’t know how, but I’m one of those rare folks who had never read The Little Prince. This video convinced me to find it as soon as possible and give it a chance. What a treasure it turned out to be!
Your channel provides a great service to those of us, having only the time to buy things in shops, who will remember seeking more.
Thank you very much!
That was truly beautiful.
Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Just finished reading the book again when I saw this video was uploaded 💜 One of my favorite books. Thank you for this explanation 🦊
Glad you enjoyed it!
Merci beaucoup pour cette vidéo! C’est mon préféré livre. Entre cette et La Alchemist. Bravo!
Merci! 🙏
I love this book sm. I've encountered and reapproached this story several times at different stages of my life and I gain a different perspective each time. ❤️
First video on this channel for me. This is exactly what I need - I’ve realized I’m never going to read all of these “you must read this!” books, I just don’t have time. This channel is awesome.
Such a lovely story
It's been such a long time since I visited the Little Prince-thank you for reminding me and I look forward to seeing him again soon.
A beautiful book. A worthy analysis. Thank you.
Thank you for your hard work again!
My pleasure!
Wonderfully crafted and edited video. Thank you
Thank you very much!
Once again, another great video! Your hard work and extensive reasearch to both channels is recognized and appreciated.
Much appreciated!
I love this book so much. The ending made me cry. I recently shared it with my niece and now she reads it every night before bed.
I have had the pleasure of reading the little prince for many years as an adult.
There is a lovely audio book, voiced by Peter Ustinov.
What I remembered today - thanks to your film - is that I was taken to see the movie when I was a child.
My memory was more about the fact that as someone with a "lazy eye" there were times during the day I needed to wear a patch over one eye.
Forced to wear the patch to the movie and unable to see properly, I ended up crying into my eye patch.
I'm looking forward to seeing the movie as a grown up.
I've just bought the dvd on eBay
I remember this book was required reading in 6th grade and I remember being so confused as were to explain the meaning of the story. Thanks!😅
I taught at an elementary school in Korea. It had a mural of the Little Prince. The town of Chungju is obsessed with him.
One of the most important gifts I gave my children is reading the Little Prince to them when they were four years old. It is a riot to play the part of the fox, and the drunk.
Then read it with them again when they were eight. They meditate deeply into happiness and sadness. Even death and loss.
And I will ask them to read it again when they are twenty.
My lesson, and my gift, is that the book is the same, but THEY have changed. They see their emotions change and grow as they unlock the misteries of the book.
I long for the day when such channels get millions of subscribers and billions of views. Then I can rest in peace knowing that all would be fine with the world.
Well that was great and emotional, more than even expected....
I read this book when I was in elementary school. It has remained as my favorite book until now, and I think everyone should read it, at least once.
First read this wonderful book after seeing the amazing movie, “My Dinner With Andre.” In which the book is discussed. Loved it ever since.
Beautiful! Thank you. ❤
Glad you like it!
One of the most impactful books ever for my French education!
I loved this video really explaining the beauty of this story. Thank you!
I love this book. Thank you for the thoughtful and well researched video.
delightful and compelling presentation
My goodness, I love this channel. I love books more than life itself….I’ve had a book in my hand since I was 6. I’m 51.
Nice ! really liked the details on this mans life. Thank you
I love this book. Great video! Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it!
Such a beautiful book.
It really is!
This is one of those books that I collect in every language I begin learning. Such a treasure.
This book will always remind me of my day who introduced it to me when I was 12. I always try to read it yearly since it gives me new perspectives about life and what I make of it
This was the book that made me love reading.
Most beautiful rendition to this timeless book. ❤❤❤
I still remember the day I know The Little Prince, it was a game collapsing with this beauty and I was almost overwhelmed with the world and the conversation of the Prince with others (through the game tho), the way I immediately went to watch the adaption and feeling something risen in my heart. It's special somehow because it was also the last season I played that game, I think I'd like to read this story one time again.
Thank you, this is my favorite book ever, the only one to make me weep uncontrollably
Thank you for the video. Another book on the reading list
Thank you, so much. This is really great.
It has been so long since I last read this book, that I had forgotten what its true message was - but each time I read it, I am at a different stage in my life and I receive a slightly new message. To think that each year that passes since this book was written, about 100 years ago, this story continues to remain more true and important for us to understand.
That was lovely. Thanks so much.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I read it as a little child and never understood all the themes in it. I just remember Rose being a pain and the hat shaped boa constrictor. LOL
I need to pick up a new copy.
I actually dont know about this little prince when i was a child but now that i am adult now theres a musician who uses this story as concept, so i did a research abt what exaclty this story is but know i know it got me really sad just bcs i can relate as the little present...i just hope that i read this since im a child. But reading this again and again till we reach adult it was indeed satisfying.
Thank you for this.. this just gave me a deeper understanding in the creation of The Little Prince..❤
Thank you for this video and your channel.
This was the first book I read in French, and it holds a special place in my heart.
Me too!
