    I had the idea of elevating the panels the way you did but I did not think of the way to ventilate the hoop house as you did. Great idea. I like your use of the clear fiber glass panels. YOU mentioned you have rabbits which might want to dig under to get inside. If so, just bury some hardware cloth or sheet metal around all sides.

    I built one of these last winter. It held up over 2 feet of snow and has survived multiple severe wind storms that knocked down trees. you will want to install an automatic vent and a small portable heater to regulate the temperature.

    I love your setup! Would you kindly make a follow up video of your experience after the first year? In Canada we have limited options for hoop houses since metal hoop benders/wiggle wire are unavailable and are cost prohibitive to import. I may replicate this for my zone 3a tomato garden.

    Can I call you Greg, Hey I watch youtube on my roku, there is no way to 'look below' or 'leave a comment'. And until now, after years and thousands of videos, many about cattle panel greenhouses (CPG) You are top level and well done. Your passion and inventiveness is commendable. So many importand details. Andre Manzay put it best, "I am stealing your plans." Okay maybe not the best way of saying you are genious level. Brainstorming, you said, it is a tsunami. Love the attention to detail. I have a short attention span, to that was good. You packed a lot of stuff in that video...truly shows you put a lot of thought for a long while. Simply the best. Thank you for sharing because sharing is caring. I am looking forward to viewing the rest of your knowledge with us. One question, I am in Missouri, where abouts are you?

    The only thing i would have changed on your design (because I live in FL) is to put a frame on the knee wall on the sides and hinge the sides too, because those ends just aren't enough in FL. Put screening on the inside so the bugs (and critters) don't get in.

    This is awesome! Gave me so many ideas for my project! Quick question - is the ultraviolet plastic attached to the platform bass susceptible to critter entry? Trying to guard against hedgehogs etc hence the question. If not, then I am planning to use hardware mesh all along the periphery. Please let me know!

    i have a hoop house almost exactly like this! I'm looking for advice as to whether to keep the plastic on during the summer. I use the hoop house to overwinter potted kitchen herbs, bulbs etc and am growing an experimental flat of greens. In the summer i don't really need the plastic and am thinking i can just take it off, since the plants do fine in their containers without protection, plus i've heard the sun shortens the life of the plastic and i'm not exactly flush and don't want to buy more plastic than necessary.
    I have googled everywhere and can't find anyone mentioning removing the plastic in the summer. Do you (or anyone) have any advice about that? Thanks very much in advance!

      You definitely want to look for deals on real, specific greenhouse plastic; it's a lot thicker/more durable and resists UV light for many years. The cheap thin stuff you get at Lowe's or whatever will turn brittle in the sun and start falling apart after only a season or two.
      Sidenote - it's kind of the same if you're looking for buckets/barrels to use for container gardening... the thin $5 buckets at HD/Lowe's etc will get brittle and fall apart in two years, but thicker food-grade ones last *several* years in the sun. I get used-once food-grade buckets for a $1 each from someone who gets truckloads of them from a cherry-processing plant. Sometimes you can get them free from restaurants, delis, etc. No brainer decision there. ;)

      Yes me too. I have two greenhouses and life in Tn. I grow tomatoes and other summer crops in it in the summer and cool weather crops in the winter. My vents are up near the top and would have to be in the heat down here. But all goes well with the top vents.

    • @gregpryorhomestead
      @gregpryorhomestead  3 роки тому

      High wind will pull some of the plastic film off the staples. So I started using thin strips of wood screwed in along the horizontal wooden rails, pinning down the film. No problems since then. And I just found out about "wigglewire" if you want to search for that online.

    Greg, I've really been enjoying your videos for the past year or so. I see you use treated wood and other "processed" materials in your projects. I am personally torn on the use of treated wood or plastic or even metal. I would love to hear your reasoning for using these materials, as someone who has such respect for the natural processes of this universe.
    Sincerely,
    Logan

    • @gregpryorhomestead
      @gregpryorhomestead  5 років тому +6

      I use treated lumber because untreated rots so quickly. Especially in the south. I know it's not organic (organic farms can't use it for raised beds or livestock enclosures etc). If I were out west I would use redwood. I'm not terribly excited about it but I'm not terribly upset about it either. Pick your poison. Compared to vegetables grown who-knows-where with who-knows-what chemicals, it's gotta be better. Ugggg. I wish everything were easy and simple and safe. Bit driving to work is the greatest risk in my life. What do you think?

    • @dystopiagear6999
      @dystopiagear6999 4 роки тому +1

      Treated wood is a troubling issue for sure. The new stuff is less harmful to the environment to manufacture and use, but it doesn't last nearly as long, and it's pretty dang expensive. I really think you'd be better off in the long run using concrete blocks or bricks for the raised base, especially if you can scavenge them. Or even just a two-foot run of.... more cattle panel around the bottom! Split one panel down the middle with a bolt cutter or angle grinder and you've got 32' x 2' of material to work with.
      Steel is the most-recycled material on the planet - more than 80% of it is recycled. I guarantee they are not mining new iron just to make cattle panels; that metal has probably been used and re-used a few times already. And being galvanized, the panels will most likely last longer than any of us will, so they won't just fall apart and/or end up in a dump in a few years. The new treated woods... you're going to be replacing them a LOT sooner than you might think.
      Petroleum based plastics... yeah, that's a hard one to get around. The best answer I can come up with is to re-use discarded/found materials whenever possible. Hopefully better bio-plastics will continue to be developed.

    *know your safety*
    Today I found out that you need the leather for knapping not only for dampening the force going into your leg but also for safety.
    *which I didn't know*
    Which is how I ended up driving a 1cm (0.5cm in width) piece of glass in my leg. I got really lucky and there was a couple passing by and the lady happened to be a doctor, so she ran back to the house, got some peroxide and bandages while the guy kept me up from getting unconscious (dunno why, but I almost did).
    Definitely not knapping until I get proper equipment (at least the thick leather).
