Hello again friends!
Back by popular demand, Joe & I are sharing another HOOP HOUSE video with you! Ventilation is very important whether you're working with a greenhouse or a hoop house. Doesn't really matter, your plants desperately need air flow to thrive.
We did a very quick & simple modification to our hoop house, which was cutting the plastic on each side, in order to roll the plastic up for ventilation. We didn't cut the plastic, we decided to roll it up. That way in the winter time, we can roll it back down to keep the plants warm! We also added screen to keep the bugs & chickens out!

Can ya get Joe a real hammer........a ball peen hammer!? 😊 LOL! Couldn't help it after watching your Q&A video. Reminded me of my father when he was alive and we were plumbers/electricians....he always had and would use a ball peen hammer.......he said that claw hammers were for those who made mistakes and couldnt drive a nail!! Thanks a bunch for your time.
@@americansfirst1095 love this haha!🤣🤣🤣
Good job. My daughter works at a commercial greenhouse and this is exactly what they do in warmer weather. I would suggest you roll your plastic the other way, toward the inside, so it doesn't catch and hold rain water. Dirt and algae will be a problem if the rolls of plastic are holding water.
Yes actually shortly after we filmed this we were like wait a minute…why didn’t we roll it the other way??? So we changed it! 😉🤣
Details like this separate the pros from the masses!
I never thought of that! I’ll start doing this on my greenhouse!
Just finished making my wife a greenhouse with your greenhouse video. Turned out great. This is the next step. Thanks y’all.
That is awesome! Congrats!😊
I'm going to build one! I think we should put the screen on first when we build the frame, then use the PVC pipe to roll up the plastic.
I've seen a lot of hoop houses/greenhouses/high tunnels being built on youtube and yours is by far the most adorable one yet. You guys really did a great job on it!
Aw thanks! I really appreciate that. We worked hard on it and so far it's doing well for us! :)
@@HomeFreeAlaska you're so welcome!
Joe’s a man of few words but he gets the job done! Great hoop house.
A suggestion for your sides that you rolled up…..if you taped it to 3/4 inch pvc and then rolled it up, your shade cloth ropes would hold it up, your plastic siding would not get kinked, and would roll back down for the winter to be attached easily.
Janie! Love this idea, thank you very much! 😊
I am so glad I found this (extra) video that went with the first video on HOW TO make this great Hoop House (I like that name, catchy)
Thank you again for sharing all of these great videos.
Excellent video. Well done on your patience and skills Joe. Love the animals and the intimacy you all have with them.
Thank you very much!
Another job well done both of you! I will be adding this to my aunt and uncle's hoophouse design.
Nice job. I am redoing my cattle panel greenhouse before next spring and will put the screen on even before the plastic. Great idea. A
nd love the way the farm animals are part of the family. All so happy!! So nice to see.
I love the screen around the base, of your Hoop House, for the Summer Months. I plan to incorporate the same idea, in mine.
Y'all are so smart and awsome, thank you for all the great information.
Our pleasure! Thanks for watching!
Great video!! I would recommend coating your bottom/foundation wood with an anti-termite coating so that you won't be losing the groundwood structure from termites or wood rot.
Handy husband you have. He's a keeper. Thanks for sharing how to build a tunnel the right way. My daughter and I are going to try and make one for this spring, we live in Calgary, Alberta Canada.
Hello friend! Thank you so much for joining us all the way from Canada! Best wishes to you & your tunnel build!
I love how Joe does all the work and it's we did it
I help Joe plenty! Trust me! 😘
Such a great idea! Thanks for telling me to watch this one too, now I'll know what to do before I build mine! Here in Colorado it gets in the mid 90's and humid in the summer where we are so ventilation will be KEY!!
Yay! Good luck with your build Dave! It’s a great, sturdy little structure! 😉
So happy to live there!
Just came across your video. I live in Virginia, too, and have been watching many videos to see what would work best for me. Your ideas are great! Hopefully will put in another garden bed and small hoop house next Spring!
This is the cutest DIY video I've ever seen! 💜
Thank you! 😊 You are so kind!
You guys are awesome. Thank you for sharing your awesome job. 🤗😘
Thank you friend! 😊
Just started building this today in Virginia. Really happy I caught this video before I got too far in.
Awesome Rob! Good luck on your build!☺️
@Home Free Alaska Sorry but could you recommend a good tarp? Just got footers in concrete picked up cattle panels and started framing. Can't believe I'm finally doing this been waiting so gosh darn long.
@@roblena7977 are you talking about the plastic on the hoop house? I linked the one we bought from Amazon in my video description if you want to check it out!☺️
This is EXACTLY what I want! Hot in Virginia? I'm sure it is but, try Las Cruces, New Mexico! Over 100+ degrees for weeks at at time. Anyway, this "hoop house" is exactly what I need for my cannabis plants. Nice job guys.
I know this is an older video but man that looks good!!! Inspires me for whenever God blesses us with land and a homestead!
Thanks friend! It turned out great & was a great space for our garden!☺️
Your husband is a great guy! Both of you did an amazing job on this!
Thank you so much! 😊
I really like what your doing!
Just watched all of your green/hoop house vids for ideas. Joe is a busy guy. Does great work. Guessing he’s a tradesman or contractor for sure. Thanks for the info.
Hi there! He’s actually a mechanic in the military. He’s a “Tinkerer” for sure! Always Working on something & even tho he doesn’t think so…he’s pretty good at carpentry & building! Thank you so much for watching our video! We had fun with this project! 😊 Happy New Year!
Another great video! The netting is a great idea. Your chickens are really pretty and also Snow❤️
Thank you so much! ♥️
Beautiful ❤
I'd gave y'all a thumb 👍 even though I hadn't watch it yet...but I'll definitely add this upgrade when my nephew & I get to do this next month. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you! 😊
Good job, love the hoophouse!
Thanks so much! Cheers! :)
Very Simple but great 👍. Thanks .Paul from Petersburg Va .Thanks
Thanks again Paul! We appreciate all of your comments on our videos! :)
This gives an idea, I think I will incorporate a lower air vent system that is functional when I build mine.
I loved the video, gave me some great ideas. I also loved it when you said things like, WE'RE just going to staple it and then told Joe he better work faster. :P
Haha! You busted me Derik! 😜 I have a lot of great ideas……for Joe to do LOL! Thanks for watching friend!
awe, poor chic's, they really want in. I love your hoop house, perfect to get air flow!
They wanted in so bad! 🤣 Thanks for watching Amber!
It's awesome to see a fellow Virginian offering perspective on these system-evolution/problem-solving efforts. There's something encouraging about knowing that a particular experience is "from here, for here".
Totally agree James! So nice to hear from a fellow Virginian! :) Thanks so much for the encouraging words!
Faceti o treaba bună 👏👏👏👏
It’s awesome to see a sheep with a tail.
Your Joe is an amazing carpenter
Aw thank you Karen! I just read your message to him! 💗😊
It's looks like wanderful hoop house.
Thank you so much.
Thank you! 😊
You guys done a wonderful job! Love your hoop house.. I am thinking of doing one like this.. thanks for sharing
You should!☺️
Awesome job!
Thanks so much!😊
Screen for ventilation and security is brilliant! I didn't want to put plastic down on the bottom because of my chickens and other burrowing animals. I knew they would want to get inside the greenhouse but we weren't exactly sure what we would put down instead. I'm probably going to do similar to you guys, so thank you!
Hope it works out for you. Thanks for watching.
hi to brownie , chickens are magical
I’m beyond excited for this video!!! I remember asking if you had a video of it. Cause I love it so I was gonna be making the exact greenhouse thank you soooo much for doing this your amazing!! 🥰❤️
Yes I remember you! You’re very welcome friend! Glad to help! Good luck on your build! You’ll love this design! 😉
@@HomeFreeAlaska Have installed a 'roller' or something so you can bring the plastic down and secure it in COLD weather?
@@Ms.Byrd68 we don’t have a roller. We just unroll it in the winter & secure it down. 😊 But a roller is a fantastic idea.
@@HomeFreeAlaska Your husband's very 'handy', he could probably come with something that would work for you guys! Thank you for answering. Be blessed!
Great job Joe … steady work , no talk …kudos
Awesome
Very nice video. We live here in Maryland, and this seems like a great idea in order to possibly grow awesome garden fresh vegetables and herbs year-round. I will definitely be looking at your product list, and looking to build this in the near future. Thanks for sharing.
You’re very welcome! We had fun with this build & it’s been such an awesome addition to the garden space! I’m glad you liked the video, thanks for watching! 😊
Excellent idea. Thx
You are welcome! Thank you :)
good idea
Thats the way to go
Really is! It’s been a great addition to the garden! 😊
By the way you treat you animals I agree with the fact that you are a blessed family
Thank you so much! 😊
I would add a layer of 1/4 inch wire mesh over the screen to help deter squirrels and rabbits from tearing the screen
I had rabbits eat through plastic fencing I used on my raised gardens last year. This year there’s a family of them. I hope to build a similar one to this model and would love to know what wire mesh you used?
I love this I also live in VA, Stafford Fredericksburg Area! I'm going to use your hoop house idea and start a hydroponic, Aquaponics house for the extra food! Awesome Idea!
Hydroponic veggies are suboptimal. They do not have the full spectrum of nutrients, especially nitric oxide, which is very essential. They also don't get the soil microbes, which the plants need. Lacking these things makes the plants enery very low.

Brownie said earlier "then go get me somethin!" Brownie then says "Fine I will get it myself!"....Those old hens know stuff.....My old hens name is "Snow".....:) ....Her roo is named "Boss Man"...the father of all chickens! Moving our 100 animals to our own new 2 acre "forever farm"....have a blessed day! Your "Snow" says those greens look mighty tasty!
Love Love Love it, a friend is helping me with some Lumber she and her grandpa has it'll cut my cost down alot she also has barn vent the ones that draw out the hot air. My plane is tto put down fabric cloth and do raise beds also self wicking tubs is a plan too my ground is to much glay in it also be to hard on me to dig out and put in the compost plus so my wife doesn't have to bend over so much. The Lord bless you and your family. See you on the video.
I really like this add on idea to your hoop house. I am curious about how well it will hold up to winter/snow? I would think that it will shed snow fairly well but... The cow panels tied together and braced like you have them seems pretty stout. Nicely done folks, I appreciate watching you two work together, and having fun doing it. Be blessed with all that you need.
Bret thanks so much for your kind words. We don't get "much" snow here in VA but we do get some. I'll be sure to do an update video as everyone's wondering how it'll hold up. :) I'm interested to see how it'll hold up in the summer with the storms, wind & tornados that we get lol! Thanks for watching...
I have a similar hoop house. During the winter weather Texas had earlier this year mine didn't shed snow well at all. Mine isn't made from cattle panels but same shape. Got up first morning and there was a foot of snow on top. Had to clear the snow daily. An added ridgepole might help.
I like this version better. Getting ready to make mine very similar.
If you check out the video description for the hoop house video, I put a list of all the materials we used with links. 😊 We bought greenhouse plastic, 6 MIL thick. 😉
You can use a pvc pipe in the bottom of the plastic to attach and roll up and down easy. You can make it heavier if needed and “click” in into special holders to keep in down
That is genius! Thanks for the tip! 😉
What “ special holders” . I’m in eastern WV and need venting in summers and secure bottom for winter.
Hermoso muy bueno saludos
I'm a flip flop worker too. Gotta keep those feet cool! Great job, looks good to me.
Yes! He was born and raised in AZ…flip flops everyday, all day lol! 😂
I would luv to try and build one that’s two panels wide and have more room inside to use a small garden tractor for tilling the soil. Lol. 😜
I’m in Amherst Va.
The screen lowers are a great idea
Maybe roll the plastic “under.” When it rains it’s gonna collect in the roll the way you have it and weight it back down. Just a thought.
Of course it was easier than you thought it would be, you just watched!
Don’t be rude. Who the heck do you think filmed this video?! Wasn’t Joe…someone has to hold the camera dude! And how assumptive you are to think you know what happens when the camera is off? I stain, lift, pull, carry, hammer and MUCH more to help my husband with our farm projects. For goodness sakes. 😂✌🏻
@@HomeFreeAlaska WOW, you can't take a joke? Perhaps you should lighten up and learn some humor. Before you pass judgment without the facts you should investigate and not assume the false. I suggest you watch some good ol' comedy and lighten up. Start with some Jeff Dunham or Bob Hope or Chris Rock (Would you have slapped him too?). I am glad you are not a cop or you would be shooting everyone you thought had a gun when in fact they reached in their pocket to to get a phone to take a picture of your great projects. Take some humor and stop the harassment of the people that watch your vids.
Simply ingenious. I am making plans to build my first cattle panel hoop house. We get extreme wind in NE KS. I am thinking I should cement posts 2' deep 4' O.C.
Yes, we cemented ours down 2 ft into the ground as well! We get high winds & tornados here in VA! So far, so good! 😉 Thanks for watching our video! 😊
Thanks for sharing
You’re very welcome!
You should put a strip just like the one on top to the back but leave the inside where it will go around boards and make a good deal then in the summer all u have to do is roll it up to the top of your screen on the inside and hook the end in a paracord loop to keep it up
Hello, just found your site and I'm from Maryland so i know how the weather has been this year , i like your hi- tunnel every much , will be building one once i to move further south but i have a suggestion for your sides how to roll them up or take them down is to use pvc pipe maybe you can use 1/2" pipe or bigger you'll need two 10' lengths with a sleeve in the middle to hold them together and two end caps to keep critters out and to keep the pipe up on both ends and the middle, take any extra pieces of the pipe cut it in half , cut them to size to hold up the ends and the middle ( you can screw those pieces on the end and the middle on both sides ) then when you want to close it once coller weather comes attach the extra half pieces of pipe on the bottom ( but turn those pieces the opposite way that you have them on top , do you get what i mean? Larry
Hey Larry! Maryland! My neighbor to the North :) I love this idea...yes this makes perfect sense. I'll have to share this message with Joe! Thank you for taking the time to write it and share that tip with us. Hope you're doing well & enjoying your summer season so far!
Love this! I'm trying to watch all your older videos! Will you all have a hoop/green house at the cabin in Alaska?
Hey Teresa! Def building a very large greenhouse on the new property! Can’t wait! It’s one of our first priorities!
@@HomeFreeAlaska I am SO excited to see what you all do to/with your Alaska homestead! You are an inspiration! 💜🙏
Le recomendaría usar tornillos y granpas en la malla muy hermoso el trabajo desde. Chile saludos
it is so neat, i love it. thank you for all the information. By the way , what is the gauge of your cattle panels ?
Not sure of the gauge! Sorry!
Great Job!👍 Can you tell me what make and model is the staple gun used for attaching the screen, thanks
I appreached your quick answering me
Looking yore hoop house
Your veg are beautiful I trying in buckets not so good butterflies eating leaves just receive insect fabric Hopeful bugs stop eating
Hopefully I get green house next year keep loosing my fruit trees
Yes I have found the insect netting to work well! Good luck to you my friend! 😉
👍👍
Nice to see you again.
You too my friend!
@@HomeFreeAlaska great video by the way.
Thank you!
@@HomeFreeAlaska i just watched your chicken feet video, the look on your face is priceless, I laughed my head off. Thanks
How do you keep the plastic held down in the winter? Does the screw (that holds the rope in place to keep the plastic up) get in the way of keeping the plastic down and possibly puncturing it?
Hi! We have wood strips (I think they are 1x2s) all the way around the hoop house that are screwed in, holding the plastic tight & in place. So far no issues with punctures in the plastic.
Buy joe some wiggle wire you're working the man to death 😁
Great Videos ! You should put a length of PVC Pipe or a 1x1 at the bottom of the plastic.. then one person could easily Roll it Up from the center !
Yessssss! Such a good idea! Thank you! 😊
Ok very good of. România good loc
Thank you so much!
Thank you for this! We've been looking for a easier cheaper way to do this. Curious tho, what type of plastic did you get? And where from?
We just bought 6 MIL plastic from Lowe’s. You can also find it on Amazon. Crawl space plastic is basically what it is. We didn’t buy greenhouse plastic. But, I would recommend stepping it up & buying greenhouse plastic if you can as it’s more durable and will last longer. 😊
Great video guys. The only thing I would suggest is now that you have base ventilated is that you move your fans up to the top of your hoop house, both blowing out. You will get rid of more heat during hot days. Your critters coming around to see whats going on and for pets is cute. I got a kick out of Joe picking up the little brown hen and setting her on the dirt pile.
👍
Here I thought you were in Alaska! 😂
We are! We moved to Alaska about a year ago. We built the hoop house while we lived in Virginia.
Have you had any problems with critters digging under and getting to your plants? Is there any sort of rodent/mole/vole barrier? Great videos!
Hey Robyn! We have had zero issues where we live with critters crawling underneath. I know that’s a problem in some areas for people but we’ve never experienced it. I’m not really sure what you would do for that issue. I suppose maybe you’d have to dig down around the parameter and put something down in the ground to deter them? Thankful we’ve never had to deal with that! Thanks for watching! 😊
Sae pisan si neng na geulis pisan
This build looks like it would hold up well in strong winds with very little (if any) improvement.
Hi Scott! So far so good. We’re in VA and we get high winds & tornados here. Cementing the 4 posts into the ground def helps. It’s a sturdy little structure! 😊
Just curious what the black shade blanket is for overtop your hoop house. If it is for shade is this because of the extreme heat. Im building a similar hoop house, so should I think about doing the same? I love the idea of mesh at the bottom. Something for us to think about too.
Hi Darren! Yes, it’s a shade cloth. Right now we live in VA with summers well over 100 degrees. With roll up sides, 2 fans, screened windows on the front & back & the shade cloth, it keeps the temp inside way down. 😊
nice job on your hoop house I am building one just like it. My question is how are pollinators going to pollinate your plants when it is all screened in?
Thank you!
We only put self pollinating plants in there. 😊
Hi enjoyed ur video. Thanks i think u should have rolled up ur plastic towards the inside to avoid rain water from filling up in the plastic making it heavy. Just a thought.....
Yes thank you! Another person actually left this comment a while ago & Joe and I went out and switched it haha!!!! It’s the little things we miss sometimes right?! 🤣
Hello, love your hoop house. I think that’s the best looking hoop house thus far. How long does the plastic last? How thick is it? Where can I order it from? TIA. New subbie here!
Hey Nancy! Thanks so much for subscribing! So I put a list of materials in the video description for ya. 😊 I went in a few months ago and updated the link for the plastic because we switched it out. The original cheap plastic lasted until the 1st heat wave of the summer lol…so we spent about $100 on actual greenhouse grade plastic from Amazon. Very thick & durable. 6 MIL thick. It’s supposed to last 2-4 yrs. I put the link in the supply list! Let me know if you can’t find it. 😊
What if you used a length of pvc pipe to attach your plastic to that way you could roll the plastic up use big cup hooks at the ends to hook the pipe in. That way you wouldn’t have to mess with boards and nails. Just a thought. I love your hoop house.
That is very nice. Where did you buy the screen? Thank you.
Hey there! 😊 We bought the shade clothe from Amazon! Here’s the link: amzn.to/31LDKA8
❤ Txs for this video. I am planning to realize something like that, but in Finland. How does your construction storm and snow? Any experience? Best regards from Germany
Hello! Our hoop house has held up fine. Here in Virginia we get strong winds, even tornados! It’s a sturdy structure being cemented into the ground and all!😊
I do wish we could still buy the good old-fashioned wire screen, the long-lasting screens we used to have in our windows. The crap they sell now as "wire screen" is just cheap, and a waste of money. I'd rather add wire screen than fabric. I think I might build one of these this summer, if I can recruit some help.
We can still get the actual wire screen at Lowe’s up here in Alaska. 😊
Joe needs a cordless nailer lol
Hello from Northern Virginia! How does the hoop house hold up during the crazy thunderstorms and righteous wind we get here? I left our pop up gazebo out, and it was pretty much destroyed.
Hey there VA friend! So it did fine! We had major storms this summer & even a few tornadoes in the area (not at our house directly obviously)…but there was zero damage to the hoop house. 😊
Hi, Thank you for the videos! I have thought about using cattle panels for a hoop house but I have a question you might be able to answer: How wide can the hoop house be without losing too much stability? I want to build one 12 feet or even 16 feet wide.
Hey Nancy! I can’t say for sure as we’ve only done the 10’ wide hoop house but I would imagine you could prob get away with going a bit wider but you may want to add some kind of center support beams just so it’s not flimsy ya know? 😊
@@HomeFreeAlaska Thank you for replying! What you suggest makes perfect sense and seems pretty easy.
Another great job the only question I have is the plastic going to fill up with water when it rains you may have to roll out the opposite way
Steve I’m almost embarrassed that we didn’t think of that! 😂 I’m rolling it the other way tomorrow haha! Thx for the tip! 😊
When I saw them roll them up, that was my first thought. What happens when it rains? Easy solution however.
Good tip. I’m in the process of building a hoop house right now. Will certainly wind up the plastic the right way. 😊👍🏻
The hoop house is awesome fast and dirty. But with the time you see all the shortcommings.
A good building allways have a good foundation. To handle the water and the temprature, there is one good material: clay.
So my recommendation would be to implement the front and the end of the hoop in a clay constructed wall.
The roof should be as big as the foil is, and open the possibility to collect the water from the rain.
Oh my friend! This isn’t a permanent structure for us! We’re moving very soon, in about a year and a half. With the pandemic making supplies and wood sky rocket…we went with what we had on hand and could afford! So far so good…the hoop house is doing great and the plants are thriving! Thank you tho for your wonderful recommendations! ♥️
@@HomeFreeAlaska Thanks for your information. For a short time using, this is indeed very awesome! And it is much bigger than a similar fast green house I saw at "Die Selbstversorger Familie", that is living in Sweden.
