  • In this video we continue building a new 12x20 cattle panel greenhouse. We used rough cut lumber for this project. This is how we built the frame that holds the cattle panels.

    Wanted to provide an update about the strength of this particular build. On May 31st, we here in central Texas had a pretty harsh storm hit us with straight-line winds of 75mph and baseball size hail. We lost many portions of 100+ year old oaks and I expected the greenhouses to be gone. Both greenhouse weathered the storm and did not budge an inch. We had an earlier storm two weeks prior which produced golfball size hail and the 6 mil plastic sustained no damage, and the hail bounced off. I was impressed! The baseball size hail did punch through but only in about 10 places, and only caused small holes, which I believe I can patch. These builds are strong, I can attest to that!

    Built not one, but two, side by side. Extremely happy with them, very sound and very STRONG. Thanks for doing this video….best I’ve seen on a cattle panel build!!!

    I am happy to report that I did stage one of this build yesterday. Stage 2 is today along with dirt work. Panels will be for another day. I already ordered my 6mil plastic, picking it up later in the week.THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR VIDEOS. This simple yet strong greenhouse is just what I needed for inspiration!!!❤

    I like how this guy does the belt & suspenders thing with the screws. Nothing worse than putting in tons of time then the darn thing falls apart. And I appreciate that he explains as he works. This is an excellent instruction video. Thanks! 👍👍

      Yeah we live in Northern Michigan. Inside the greenhouse I’ve covered the plants with plastic, hooped over, and one night we had an electric heater going. It worked good. My peppers and tomatoes are good size. We do plan to use shade cloth this summer. Thanks for watching! 😊

    I. used six 2x4's for posts for a 20 by 11 1/2 cattle panel GH. I used 4 foot posts, 1 1/2 feet into the ground. Wanted the 2 feet below the he 2x4 horizontal. This left 6 inches of 2x4 above the two foot high. Horizontal which I didn't cut off . Once the panels were in place, I added a horizontal 2x4 on the inside of the panel, six inches above the two so footer on the outside of the panels. This spread out the arc of the mesh horizontally and brought the 7 foot tall center down a foot and broadened the arch. The idea was less height as we have vicious winds but also more height on the the inner sides of the GH. This has made the arc of panel more stable.

      Cool idea, I'm about to put a 10 x 33 ft one together and I like the idea and will give it a try. Wind isn't a problem, but we are gonna like the more uniform height. Thank you.

      @@samlevy4690 HI SAM - GLAD YOU LIKE MY IDEA. If you set a 16 foot long cattle panel as a hoop on the ground - at 11.5 feet span you get 4 feet height. So, is you raise the panel two feet, it will be 6 feet so whatever height you want, you just add it to the two feet. If you raise it 4 feet to get 8 feet height you might consider using 4x4 pressure treated posts . . . as the 2x4 may be kinda light. Also, use plenty of cement in the holes as the trick I describe puts the posts under pressure and you want them to remain vertical. . You could use pressured 2x4 but get a full foot and a half depth and have cement go to top of soil. Also, be sure and get UV treated zip ties to tie the hoops together or they'll snap in the sun. I didn't and had to replace all mine! Good luck!

    That looks like a awesome build. Wondering what you use to connect the cattle panels to one another going up over the top?

    What state are you in do you get a snow load? Everything I’ve read said you have to keep it inside of 7 1/2 feet wide or the arch won’t support the load? Would you have any advice for somebody who’s building this for the first time in New Hampshire we were thinking about adding 4 feet to the 16 foot panel but I don’t know How that will affect the overall strength?

      Hi! We are in Northern Michigan. Our 10’ hoop house did fine this winter, with the snow falling off on its own. We discussed the possibility of having to keep an eye on this 12’ hoop house for snow load. If it’s an issue we will put in extra load support at the peak, and keep the snow off. I think with extra bracing it should be ok.

      I have been watching many cattle panel greenhouse videos. Some people put in a brace down the middle, to help support any snow load. Seems they all fair just fine.

      We're in Maine and built our first cattle panel Hoophouse in 2021. Cement corner posts, additional ropes going over down into the anchors/earth. Middle beam for extra support of snow/ice,but so far snow or ice slides right off,we are in full sun. Bottom 2 foot knee wall is screened and this thing does not budge. Love it! We are now building our second one of 12x20,Hoop frame from a shelter king. Again will do cement corner posts and some things will be different on this one..

    What did you use to attach the four heavy duty studded t-posts?
    Did you drill holes through them?

    You spent more money on wood than you will ever get from that greenhouse in food savings i've done the math, plus if you're going that kind of money just make a greenhouse, these hoops are good until a big storm and plastic has to be changed every few years, i have 3 greenhouses running 10 months a year.

    • @Springdalecottage
      @Springdalecottage  4 місяці тому

      The wood was free, milled up on our sawmill. We use what we have. 😊
