Saving a Damaged Jacobean Buffet with Milk Paint | Shackteau Interiors | Modern Farmhouse Furniture

- In today's video I will be showing you how I saved this damaged Jacobean Buffet I found at my local thrift store. The veneer is heavily damaged. The previous owner(s) did not take care of this piece, especially the top. The veneer top has cracked and bubbled over time because pot holders and coasters were not used. The varnish has started to peel off as well and the dark rings and water marks are extensive.
Whether or not a piece of furniture has been painted or refinished, you need to protect it so that damage like this doesn't happen.
I will be cleaning with TSP, repairing the veneer, filling cracks & damages, sanding the piece, painting with Shackteau Interiors millk paint in Black Beach, distressing, and sealing it with orange scented furniture wax.
If you enjoyed this video please give it a thumbs up, and if you didn't give it a thumbs down! Thanks for watching!
xoxo,
Holly

@@ChicAntiquebyHolly I don't doubt it. Raining right now but it is warmer. Try to stay dry. I'm sure the wet weather affects your work as well.

Hi Holly, you did a great job repairing the veneer. This sure is a beauty. I've never been able to find a piece like this that wasn't already refinished. Your paint finish is perfect and honors this period piece. I hope you enjoyed the holidays and that your new year is off to a great start!🌷☃️🌷
You are so kind, Cath. I really appreciate your words and appreciation for my work. I hope your new year is going well too ❤
What a magnificent piece! You restored this old beauty so perfectly 🤩
Thank you so much 😊
@John Meigs Do you see how damaged this piece was? I’d say she definitely restored it. She saved it from being thrown in a fire pit, I’d say she saved, rescued and restored it. I bet her piece did sell. Restored pieces are selling like hot cakes!
@John Meigs dude, long replies aren’t necessary or even read.
@John Meigs John, it’s very simple dear. I’m intelligent enough to know that your opinion is not worth my time.
Gorgeous piece!
Thank you!

Beautiful 🌹
Thank you 😊
Sweet.
Very beautiful job! I may have to try this paint. May I ask if you have ever tried the bag-o-rags from Lowes? It's actually t-shirt material for waxing. Being a chronic pain warrior these work very well for me.
Thank you so much!
I used to use the precision fiber cloths from Home Depot, but I found that I had to buff a lot harder and longer and they wore out really fast so I had to use a lot of them. I'm so glad they have worked well for you and your chronic pain! I like microfiber rags, just based on personal preference!
Wow, what a transformation. I'm just starting into this hobby. I've found your videos, helpful and inspirational. I was wondering how durable a wax coat is. Would you use it on a desk over chalk paint or is it better to do a clear coat top coat from dixie belle. I have an antique drexel vanity/desk to do. Just wondering what would work best for it. Thanks
Thank you so much! That's so kind.
Wax is definitely durable, but it is recommended to reapply every 6-12 months, so that makes it more high-maintenance than clear coat.
If it's a high traffic piece and you don't want to worry about it, you may be better using a clear coat. And you can always do an extra coat on the top for more protection. Something like a desk, I would do 2 coats on the body, and 3 coats on the top for maximum protection.
Love both your work & the bunnies
Thank you so much! That is so cool that you are from here too!
Wow I love that you are starting this journey! Good for you! Thanks for watching my videos ❤
Lovely 👍🏾
Thank you!
Love the look of the buffet. I wouldn’t consider that “Severely Damaged”
Thanks! Agree to disagree!
It looked structurally sound, the damage seemed cosmetic. Was there something I wasn't seeing?
It came out beautiful, the camera shot almost makes it look like a blue tint to it . It you want a smooth finish do you add something else to the milk paint so it doesn’t chip off so easy ? The hardware is so unique
Thank you so much
! It's hard to capture the true undertone, but it does have a neutral undertone for sure.
Yes, Shackteau Interiors sells a paint additive called Extra Bond that prevents the chipping if you want uniform coverage.
Υπέροχο αποτέλεσμα ❤❤❤Klair V
OMG I LOVE THIS PIECE!!! Those who pasted it are idiots!!! I die for this piece!
Aw, thank you very much. You are so kind.
@@ChicAntiquebyHolly thanks idk what color myself would have done but I know it be a bold color, like a corral or peacock blue.
Wow that's awesome. I love these buffets. Have you ever tried their white milk paint? I have the black and love it. I'm going to paint a jocobean buffet for my daughter in law and she wants it white. I've been thinking of using milk paint. Would love your feedback.
Thanks! No, this is the only color I've tried so far!
White would be beautiful though! It would probably be a good idea to use clear shellac before painting to prevent any wood tannins or stains in the wood from bleeding through the paint. Does she like the chippy look, or does she want full coverage on the piece?
It's stunning! And that's saying a lot because I'm generally not a fan of dark furniture.
I know nothing of milk paint (which is why I watched) I'd like to know how durable it is. Does it keep flaking?
Thank you so much! I appreciate you keeping an open mind to something that's not your typical style!
It does not keep flaking after is has been sealed. All the paint that didn't adhere to the surface was removed when I sanded the entire piece prior to sealing.
i am obsessed with how this turned out! i didn't know you could do intentional chipping!
Thank you so much! That's what I love about milk paint! It's so unpredictable, you never know how much is going to chip off, but it always turns out beautiful.
I used to use milk paint 15 years ago. I loved working with it. Your piece turned beautiful. Can I ask you where you got your wheel casters that your piece was sitting on when you were painting. I was trying to zoom I to see the brand to no avail?
Thank you so much!
I got them at Harbor Freight! Here's the link:
www.harborfreight.com/3-wheel-wood-dolly-68902.html
I think it would be gorgeous with satin black paint!!! But it's lovely for destressed. I prefer shiny!¡
Thanks for watching!
Hi, great job 🙂 curious though.. I've never used glue syringes. Are they one use and toss or can they be cleaned up and re-used?
Thank you!
I've never tried to clean them, actually. I would imagine it would be pretty difficult, but I'm sure you could try. You would just need to do it right after using them so the glue it still wet.
I found these mini squeeze bottles with needles on Amazon and I pass a piece of fishing line through the needle to clean up after I use them. Thought I would share.
I've used them, and they are cleanable. Hot soapy water pushed through the syringe soon after use.
When you use a wax finish door let your buyer know that they must re wax it? I love the chippy over the wood! I usually use a paint coat under mine. I'll have to try that, it turned out bea!
This piece wasn't for sale, I kept it for myself :) Glad you like it! Thanks for watching!
How long do you let the wax sit before you remove it? Sorry if I missed that information in the video. You do such a lovely job.
Thank you so much! I usually wait 10-20 minutes before buffing it.
Thank you!
iIT TURNED OUT BEAUTIFUL, JUST WISH TH INSIDE WAS PAINTED BLACK
Thanks!
I use an electric car polishishing mop to buff off my wax. They are not very expensive and really save your arms,
That is a great tip! Thank you!
