I was born in the late 80's. I've loved The Eagles forever and I'm excited to say I'm seeing them live tonight!! (Sadly without Glenn, of course.) So while those born in the 40s and 50s may love the Eagles, just know many other generations do too. All love.
The American rock band the Eagles first compilation album, Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975, has just surpassed Michael Jackson's Thriller as the best-selling album of all time. the Eagles' Hotel California is now certified 26-times platinum, which places it right behind Thriller.
This band could be called anything from country rock, soft rock, mellow or stoner rock, top 40 rock etc. This song is one of the biggest staples in the history of rock right up there with stairway to heaven.
I kinda felt they were like a collaborative Bard group. It's a story you could hear telling the tale of the highs and lows of being famous in Cali. Alot of my favorite band are like this. More Story like singing... don't know if Bardic is the right term
The Eagles were the best-selling band of the 20th century. Think for a moment about who their competition was and you'll realize just how good they were.
They had the best selling album of the 20th century. They were not the best selling band period. That's The Beatles. Several bands sold more albums overall than The Eagles (Beatles, Zep, Pink Floyd, Queen).
Yeah that’s BS;) there were the Beatles Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin, but they r on a level with queen. There r solo singers that sell more 2, but it when u just count ,bands they r number 5, great of course, but not Nr. 1. unless u mean US nr.1, the others r brits
ELO, Elton John, Spinners, Stylistic, Temptation, O’Jays, Gladys Knight and the Pips, America, Jim Croce, Led Zeppelin, Cat Steven, Neil Diamond, Carole King, Delphonics ………… I can go on and on
I grew up in the 70's and I classify anything that was played on FM radio stations as Rock, things weren't broke down like they are today. It's classic Rock and it drives me crazy that people always want to find a genre a band belongs to. So for this old guy it's just Rock and for people today maybe soft rock. Of course you don't know what was played on FM stations.
I am so glad to read this. It drives me crazy too. I have said in other messages: from Simon and Garfunkel to Metallica, from Fleetwood Mac to Alice in Chains, it is all rock music!
This 75 year old basically agrees with the exception of the rare classical rock. That is, rock and classical mixed. For example, Renaissance doing "Island". There are very few in that category. It's just me! BTW, Jordongk got his sinuses cleared with this!!!
"Rock" is a LARGE umbrella of other smaller genres. And a band can play several different "rock" genre's in their catalog of music if they're diverse. And many rock songs incorporate several genre's in one song. This one for instance has a reggae beat to it. There's nothing wrong with breaking songs or bands down into genres, it can help you find other similar music you may like.
Don Henley had great solo efforts (Dirty Laundry is appropriate in out world today) Glenn Fry had a fair number of solo hits. Joe Walsh...there's a dude you want to check out, for SURE. "Rocky Mountain Way" and "Life's Been Good" are excellent. "Funk #49" he did with The James Gang. As to the Eagles..."Seven Bridges Road" showcases their harmony.
The voice, the story telling, the harmonies, the musicianship. Such an amazing band! Amazing repertoire of songs! You should definitely explore more of this band! Classic ‘70’s music. LOVE, LOCE, LOVE!!!
When the live version sounds just like the studio version, you know you've got a good one! "Take it to the Limit" and "Peaceful, Easy Feeling" are good ones and there are others. This song has one of the most famous guitar rifts in rock-n-roll history (not surprisingly). The drummer, Don Henley, also went solo at some point. I love his "Boys of Summer" - you would too. Great reaction!
Great reaction, I agree. The band broke up and swore they would only get back together when/if Hell freezes over. Don Henley had several solo hits, including Boys of Summer. But so did Joe Walsh, remember Life's Been Good ("My mazerati does 185, I lost my license now I don't drive". Some years later the band did get back together and they called it The Hell Froze Over Tour. :)
This was when there were REAL musicians that played REAL instruments. And boy, did they ever know how to play REAL music!!!! 👍 Glad to see you appreciate music from days gone by.
Only because Randy wasn’t sure he could hit those super high notes every night singing that song.. I believe one particular night he absolutely refused to play it, I think the encore, because he just felt he could not hit those high notes that night. Henley and fry be rated him and I think even physically started to assault him and he quit on the spot. Too bad. He was a wonderful player, fantastic singer and also seemed the nicest and down to earth of the band. Everyone’s right the live vocal of take it to the limitIt’s just unbelievable! If I can find it I’ll link it here
They just took a 14 year vacation from each other. They said Hell would freze over before they got back together.I went to a "Hell Freezes Over Concert" in 2015 right before Glenn Frye passed away
I am 59 years old, this song came out when I was 9. This year was the 50th Anniversary Hotel California tour. I was lucky enough to go see the concert in May in Salt Lake City. It was the concert of a lifetime! They still sound amazing!!!
Don Henley , drummer and co-writer said in an interview that this song was inspired by an old 1960s' TV show called, "Twilight Zone". They wanted to give the song a mystical other worldly feeling. The lyric is ambiguous enough that the listener can read just about anything they want to into it. Great song writing!
The Eagles started out as a country rock band and widened their scope when they added Joe Walsh from the James Gang in around 1974 or 1975. Joe Walsh is the guitarist with the Telecaster.

The hotel is for the rich and famous drug and alcohol abusers. "And I was thinking to myself [this could be heaven or this could be hell]." You can check out anytime you like but you can never leave refers to "Once an addict always an addict!"
GREAT REACTION. The EAGLES WERE GREAT. This song is from 1977, and here is some history of the song. I am older, I am 72 years old. I lived through this. This was my era and my generation. The cry of our ERA, was "SEX, DRUGS AND ROCK AND ROLL" The reference to 1969 was WOODSTOCK. See, the hippie and yippie movement started in California. It was the time of "FREE LOVE and WEED." Hotel California offered and provided EVERYTHING you wanted or needed. "We are all just prisoners here of our own device." Mirrors over the beds, sex. Alcohol, "The FEAST on the bed, was cut with a knife" the BEAST was DRUGS. (FEED YOUR ADDICTION, (THE DRUG OF THAT DAY WAS HEROIN) Stay as long as you want or leave anytime, (but you NEVER leave your ADDICTION behind). In 1977 they sang about these things in code or EXAMPLE, or they would have been CENSORED and never played on any radio station. In an interview in 2007 the Eagles admitted they themselves were drowning in these temptations, just as ALL of California was. GO BACK AND LISTEN AGAIN TO THE SONG, You will see that I am correct.
Great reaction I'm my humble opinion.... The greatest band & the greatest song 😎 A few of their best hits... I can't tell you why Desperado One of these nights Life in the fast lane Tequila sunrise Take it to the limit You'll be a fan and hooked after listening to the above, just like I was 🦅
Greatest song? Check this one out from 1969 and then declare Hotel California is still the greatest song: ua-cam.com/video/VAnh1waFPeY/v-deo.html. You will be humbled....
At age 77 I have been a fan of good music like this since my teen years. I say "like this" because a good dam song is a good dam song no matter what "genre" it may fall into. So many (mostly) young people seem to be fixated on deciding exactly what hole each peg fits into when it comes to music. I suppose that living thru the evolution of popular music as I have, has made me realize that what evolves from each musical era from the 50s thru the 80s has been, largely, the best of it's time. What people have liked then has surfaced now, and that is what fans of every reactor tend to recommend for the playlist. Yes, there are different kinds of music, to a degree, but not so much so that categorizing is essential. Just play, listen, react - if you hate it, say so. But if you love it, you will likely say so with a lot of feeling. And that, dear Reactor, is the reason we are all here. Thank you for this reaction, Jordongk, you have another subscriber!
I was born in 1965 this is just rock and roll this group is the bomb every one of these guys can sing lead because they've all had their own bands... These guys are all great song writers and musicians you need to listen to more of the eagles and then look up them individually
Hello friend! You have just witnessed the performance of one of the greatest rock songs ever written, arguably. Along with Led Zeppelin stairway to heaven and Leonard Skynyrd free bird and perhaps Queens Bohemian Rhapsody. Eagles several years ago outsold Michael Jackson’s thriller album with their greatest hits album. I remember reading the story in the news and I almost fell off my chair because thriller hell the top spot is the greatest selling album ever - which is a testament to how amazing the Eagles and there catalog with music truly stands
now you know why the Eagles have sold over 200 million albums… Hotel California has sold over 40 million… just a very talented group of musicians, song writers and obviously live performers
Welcome to the Eagles who in my mind are the BEST band EVER!...They started out as a country rock band and progressed to being a rock band but their songs almost always have a southern country element in them...As you can see from the video they are just as good if not better in live performance and all of their songs are epic. There is no real Hotel California...The lyrics are about the drug scene in California in the 1970s
Don Felder driving that double-neck Gibson, exchanging solos and harmonies with Joe Walsh on his Telecaster. It's a pure time machine, shooting me back 45 years to high school days, long hair, bell-bottoms and figuring out the mysteries of the opposite sex (well, more like _wanting_ to figure than very much actual figuring). Sweet, sweet youth....
Many (all) of the Eagles had successful solo careers. Check out Joe Walsh 'Life's Been Good', Don Henley's 'Boys of Summer' and Glenn Frey's "The Heat Is On' from Beverly Hills Cop. A contemporary band to the Eagles was Seals & Crofts. Check out their 'Summer Breeze', 'Diamond Girl', or 'Hummingbird'.
Eagle music shines more in the matured listner category. Their music is also evenly spread across the global continent. Jimi Hendrix was popular for his guitar more on the American spheres and Micheal was lucky to arrive during the age of MTV (known more for his dance then music).
These guys invented country rock with a big chunk of blues thanks to don henley...country thanks to glenn frey ...hard rock thanks to don felder and joe walsh and dont forget that smooth soul of timothy b schmitt...
I was a teenager and they were tje greatest and still are to me best times of my life .The Eagles was part of it. All my friends loved them Great times Very talented band '!! They have a lot of hits!!!
They are a rock band that has been described as easy rock, pop rock, and country rock. Hotel California has both Latin and Reggae elements in the composition.
RE: Reggae Yeah, that is the only of their songs that have that beat. Before that song had lyrics and was just a riff on a cassette tape Felder sent it to Henley and he labeled it "Mexican Reggae". That arpeggio duet at the end is really good and Walsh came up with it.
When guitarist Don Felder brought this guitar riff into the songwriting process. They remarked that it sounded like 'Mexican Reggae' so your hunch was right.
I grew up listening to them. Being a hippie myself, my generation was all about music. The Eagles were in a category all by themselves: a little rock, a little blues, and a whole lot of call it what you want tunes! 😝♥️
This is my favorite version of my favorite song, recorded live at the Capital Centre in Landover, Maryland, USA, March 21, 1977. Yes, there is a reggae vibe, and in fact the song's working title was "Mexican Reggae".
The Eagles are in their own category. Very versatile. It's also a band made up of lead singers capable of backing each other beautifully. Give Take it to the Limit a listen.
One of the most successful rock bands of all time. Been performing for about 50 years. Still touring. A MUST go to see their live performance. Multitudes of posts on You Tube for you to see and learn about them. There is a catalog of a couple of hundred songs, many hits, that you must listen to.
That guitarist, With bandana, played for steely Dan live shows. The other guitarist ,Felder, wrote the melody. It is a fusion of Latin reggae country rock as Glenn described it. All members of the band sang except Don Felder only sang backup. The lyrics are the greatest ever written in my opinion, they evoke primordial images in the psyche. What Carl young called archetypes, I thing the writers(Glenn and Don) well knew this. They tell a mysterious tale we can all somehow relate to. Ambiguous like our fleeting memories, yet so powerful we keep dwelling endlessly on the meaning they have to us.
The "Hotel California" represents all that a person dreams of obtaining in life; but once obtained, these visions often reveal themselves to be the worst nightmares one could ever have imagined. Thus, a person needs to learn to be careful what they wish for in life.
Saw The Eagles live on their "Hell Freezes Over" concert tour. Joe Walsh, (guitarist with the red bandana) is a trip. He would sing, take a break and start bullshitting at the mike. Couldn't understand a word he was saying, but then would sing another song, clear as a bell. They were great to see live!
Ozzy Osbourne vibes lol. I got to see them in mid to late 2000's. I fell in love with their music as a kid when that tour/ album came out. Could listen start to finish, just unreal! Had to see them before they retired!
I've heard this song 100's of times and NEVER thought about a Reggae sound! But then I thought, Yeah, it's the Bass and you said, "It's the Bass". Nice
I was at that show in 1977 at the Capitol Center in Largo, Maryland. It was a kick ass concert. Eagles killed that night. They are a huge rock band with a deep catalog of songs. Check out their song "Take It Easy". They just kicked off another tour this year.
What do you don’t see anymore is real musicians playing live with no click track, and no backing track. This is live from the ground up.
ikr...pure talent
This was our music. We called it just rock. Those of us born in the 40s and 50s loved this group.
I was born in the late 80's. I've loved The Eagles forever and I'm excited to say I'm seeing them live tonight!! (Sadly without Glenn, of course.) So while those born in the 40s and 50s may love the Eagles, just know many other generations do too. All love.

I was born in the 80's and love rock Music
Born in 2006 and love the Eagles
Snd we STILL love them!!💜💜🤘🤘🤘🎶🎼🎵🥁🎙🎸
You picked the right performance to watch. This is the classic line up at it's best. Walsh and Felder's duel at the end is sublime.
Randy Meisner!!! Subtle bass line on all his stuff is fabulous.
The American rock band the Eagles first compilation album, Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975, has just surpassed Michael Jackson's Thriller as the best-selling album of all time. the Eagles' Hotel California is now certified 26-times platinum, which places it right behind Thriller.
Wow congrats to them 😊
Loved your face when they started harmonizing. No auto tuning just huge amounts of pure talent.

"He can play".

Joe Walsh's back & forth with Don Felder is epic.

"Lyin' Eyes"...."I Can't Tell You Why"...."The Best of My Love.".."Already Gone"..."Peaceful Easy Feeling".."One of These Nights."

Bassist Randy Meisner singing Take it to the Limit - Live at Capital Centre in 1977. Easy to find on UA-cam. Some say the song that broke up the band.

They had 4 lead singers and everyone did harmonies. And it’s just rock and roll. Rock has many faces just like jazz, blues, R&B, rap, etc.
Another drummer who sang lead was Phil Collins with Genesis after Peter Gabriel left.

Great reaction
I'm my humble opinion.... The greatest band & the greatest song 😎
A few of their best hits...
I can't tell you why
Desperado
One of these nights
Life in the fast lane
Tequila sunrise
Take it to the limit
You'll be a fan and hooked after listening to the above, just like I was 🦅
Greatest song? Check this one out from 1969 and then declare Hotel California is still the greatest song: ua-cam.com/video/VAnh1waFPeY/v-deo.html. You will be humbled....
The drummer was Don Henley and they are a super group. Everyone in the band sang different songs.
I love seeing young people learning about our era of great music !!!
One of the greatest bands ever 👏👏👏
Americana genre, multi genre. Many fantastic hits and talent. Iconic band.
This band has the best selling album of all time. They are in the same league as the artist you mentioned in the beginning. Mega mega stars.
Very astute observation! The working title for this song (before they came up with lyrics) was...wait for it..."Mexican Reggae"!
Every member can sing lead. I've seen them twice and they give you goosebumps constantly with guitars and harmonies. Incredible talent on one stage.
In the US, we just call this Southern Rock, babe. One of the greatest songs ever produced.
That guitar rift is simply a moment of magic...
The Eagles is the best band ever. The have at least 20 songs that are amazing
The Band's drummer was their singer. Another group to check out. My favorite Eagles song is Seven Bridges Road. Crazy harmony.
Eagle music shines more in the matured listner category. Their music is also evenly spread across the global continent. Jimi Hendrix was popular for his guitar more on the American spheres and Micheal was lucky to arrive during the age of MTV (known more for his dance then music).
It's that scratching guitar sound with muted strings that gives me that reggae feel.
They are a Southern Rock. Both the Drummer Don and the Acoustic guitar Glenn (R.I.P) are lead singers depending on the song.
6:46 I still get goose bumps watching Felder & Walsh 'bounce' off of each other...
We lost the lead vocalist recently. His name was Glenn Frey.
he can play !! Joe Walsh and Don Felder - two phenomenal Guitarists with Timothy B Schmitt on bass What a band one of the best ever !
Randy Meisner was the bassist on the 1st 5 albums. He left after this tour.
These guys invented country rock with a big chunk of blues thanks to don henley...country thanks to glenn frey ...hard rock thanks to don felder and joe walsh and dont forget that smooth soul of timothy b schmitt...
Actually the bassist at this time is randy m ....lol but both are amazing musicians and vocalists
Sorry but that’ll be Randy Meisner, the original bassist and the high voice in Take It To The Limit.
Mexican Reggae was what Joe Walsh, the guitarist with the headband said when he first heard it.
I was a teenager and they were tje greatest and still are to me best times of my life .The Eagles was part of it. All my friends loved them Great times
Very talented band '!!
All of them sing a number of their own tunes. The album "When Hell Freezes Over" has a good variety to show the talent of every member of the band.
Yes Hotel California Melody Is Called "Spanish Raegee" This Melody Was Written by Don Felder the Double Neck Guitar player in the Video
Their music is my childhood….. along with Steely Dan, Billy Joel, Elton John, Bee Gees, EWF, etc.
So dark and beautiful at the same time. Classic Rock or Rock
They’re not just any band. They are legends. They now the hold the title for the BEST SELLING ALBUM OF ALL TIME. Certified platinum 38x-38 million
One of the most successful rock bands of all time. Been performing for about 50 years. Still touring. A MUST go to see their live performance. Multitudes of posts on You Tube for you to see and learn about them. There is a catalog of a couple of hundred songs, many hits, that you must listen to.
Those are the REAL musicians!!!!
a rock band that has a latin rhythm with this song...legendary song!
Masterclass musicians. Genre , just damn great music. They each could sing equally as well.
