The Eagles hold the record for the most and 3rd most albums ever sold. Sandwiched in there is a little album called Thriller by Michael Jackson. Legendary isn’t even the word. They’re immortal.
I was born in the late 80's. I've loved The Eagles forever and I'm excited to say I'm seeing them live tonight!! (Sadly without Glenn, of course.) So while those born in the 40s and 50s may love the Eagles, just know many other generations do too. All love.
The American rock band the Eagles first compilation album, Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975, has just surpassed Michael Jackson's Thriller as the best-selling album of all time. the Eagles' Hotel California is now certified 26-times platinum, which places it right behind Thriller.
This band could be called anything from country rock, soft rock, mellow or stoner rock, top 40 rock etc. This song is one of the biggest staples in the history of rock right up there with stairway to heaven.
I kinda felt they were like a collaborative Bard group. It's a story you could hear telling the tale of the highs and lows of being famous in Cali. Alot of my favorite band are like this. More Story like singing... don't know if Bardic is the right term
When people who grew up with this song, have to explain that it's not actually about The Beverly Hills Hotel. It's about decadence and burnout, hedonism, addiction, sex, money, greed, corruption... the overall lifestyle of the 1970s.
RE: Reggae Yeah, that is the only of their songs that have that beat. Before that song had lyrics and was just a riff on a cassette tape Felder sent it to Henley and he labeled it "Mexican Reggae". That arpeggio duet at the end is really good and Walsh came up with it.
I've heard this song 100's of times and NEVER thought about a Reggae sound! But then I thought, Yeah, it's the Bass and you said, "It's the Bass". Nice
The Eagles were the best-selling band of the 20th century. Think for a moment about who their competition was and you'll realize just how good they were.
They had the best selling album of the 20th century. They were not the best selling band period. That's The Beatles. Several bands sold more albums overall than The Eagles (Beatles, Zep, Pink Floyd, Queen).
Yeah that’s BS;) there were the Beatles Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin, but they r on a level with queen. There r solo singers that sell more 2, but it when u just count ,bands they r number 5, great of course, but not Nr. 1. unless u mean US nr.1, the others r brits
When guitarist Don Felder brought this guitar riff into the songwriting process. They remarked that it sounded like 'Mexican Reggae' so your hunch was right.
That guitarist, With bandana, played for steely Dan live shows. The other guitarist ,Felder, wrote the melody. It is a fusion of Latin reggae country rock as Glenn described it. All members of the band sang except Don Felder only sang backup. The lyrics are the greatest ever written in my opinion, they evoke primordial images in the psyche. What Carl young called archetypes, I thing the writers(Glenn and Don) well knew this. They tell a mysterious tale we can all somehow relate to. Ambiguous like our fleeting memories, yet so powerful we keep dwelling endlessly on the meaning they have to us.
The man playing the double guitar was Don Felder. Before he joined the Eagles he taught guitar in Florida and he taught Tom Petty to play... Don Felder wrote the music for this song.
There are some bands Eagles, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin etc. that are In a league of their own and can not be defined as any any type of music. They are in a class by themselves.
Most people at the time would call them country rock. This song is more on the rock side, and this is some of the best of the 70's as far as I'm concerned.
Trying to pin down their genre is like trying to staple Jell-O. In this song, you have rock ballad, but undertones by Caribbean bass licks. They had so much flavor, they could 'season' a song to taste.
When Eagles guitarist Joe Walsh was asked about his early years with the Eagles, he would answer to the effect of "they tell me I had a great time". Thankfully he got off drugs. Some of Joe Walsh's solo project songs are worth reacting to. Consider reacting to Rocky Mountain Way and/or Life's Been Good.
First time hearing The Eagles, Hotel California, live in '77, & didn't get blocked...you lucky bloke! And yes, that is a raggae groove, the whole chilling in California with a spleef vibe when just under the surface of the seeming glitz and glamour of it all is a seedy, ugly truth; some have said this song could be a metaphor for the United States, the whole American Dream thing but at the cost of what, and whom...and how much? Anyways, great song mate
ELO, Elton John, Spinners, Stylistic, Temptation, O’Jays, Gladys Knight and the Pips, America, Jim Croce, Led Zeppelin, Cat Steven, Neil Diamond, Carole King, Delphonics ………… I can go on and on

GREAT REACTION. The EAGLES WERE GREAT. This song is from 1977, and here is some history of the song. I am older, I am 72 years old. I lived through this. This was my era and my generation. The cry of our ERA, was "SEX, DRUGS AND ROCK AND ROLL" The reference to 1969 was WOODSTOCK. See, the hippie and yippie movement started in California. It was the time of "FREE LOVE and WEED." Hotel California offered and provided EVERYTHING you wanted or needed. "We are all just prisoners here of our own device." Mirrors over the beds, sex. Alcohol, "The FEAST on the bed, was cut with a knife" the BEAST was DRUGS. (FEED YOUR ADDICTION, (THE DRUG OF THAT DAY WAS HEROIN) Stay as long as you want or leave anytime, (but you NEVER leave your ADDICTION behind). In 1977 they sang about these things in code or EXAMPLE, or they would have been CENSORED and never played on any radio station. In an interview in 2007 the Eagles admitted they themselves were drowning in these temptations, just as ALL of California was. GO BACK AND LISTEN AGAIN TO THE SONG, You will see that I am correct.
Don Felder driving that double-neck Gibson, exchanging solos and harmonies with Joe Walsh on his Telecaster. It's a pure time machine, shooting me back 45 years to high school days, long hair, bell-bottoms and figuring out the mysteries of the opposite sex (well, more like _wanting_ to figure than very much actual figuring). Sweet, sweet youth....
I am 59 years old, this song came out when I was 9. This year was the 50th Anniversary Hotel California tour. I was lucky enough to go see the concert in May in Salt Lake City. It was the concert of a lifetime! They still sound amazing!!!
now you know why the Eagles have sold over 200 million albums… Hotel California has sold over 40 million… just a very talented group of musicians, song writers and obviously live performers
Don Henley , drummer and co-writer said in an interview that this song was inspired by an old 1960s' TV show called, "Twilight Zone". They wanted to give the song a mystical other worldly feeling. The lyric is ambiguous enough that the listener can read just about anything they want to into it. Great song writing!
The voice, the story telling, the harmonies, the musicianship. Such an amazing band! Amazing repertoire of songs! You should definitely explore more of this band! Classic ‘70’s music. LOVE, LOCE, LOVE!!!
I grew up in the 70's and I classify anything that was played on FM radio stations as Rock, things weren't broke down like they are today. It's classic Rock and it drives me crazy that people always want to find a genre a band belongs to. So for this old guy it's just Rock and for people today maybe soft rock. Of course you don't know what was played on FM stations.
I am so glad to read this. It drives me crazy too. I have said in other messages: from Simon and Garfunkel to Metallica, from Fleetwood Mac to Alice in Chains, it is all rock music!
This 75 year old basically agrees with the exception of the rare classical rock. That is, rock and classical mixed. For example, Renaissance doing "Island". There are very few in that category. It's just me! BTW, Jordongk got his sinuses cleared with this!!!
"Rock" is a LARGE umbrella of other smaller genres. And a band can play several different "rock" genre's in their catalog of music if they're diverse. And many rock songs incorporate several genre's in one song. This one for instance has a reggae beat to it. There's nothing wrong with breaking songs or bands down into genres, it can help you find other similar music you may like.
This is my favorite version of my favorite song, recorded live at the Capital Centre in Landover, Maryland, USA, March 21, 1977. Yes, there is a reggae vibe, and in fact the song's working title was "Mexican Reggae".
You have to remember this was long before any auto tune or backing track , Bands of this era and those before them relied on one thing only and that was talent and they had it in spades, These people worked hard playing every dead end Bar they could find that would pay them to play, There they learned their art and craft and hoped vainly in some cases that they would be talent spotted, And all they had was their talent their instruments and a Van to live out of.
Eagle music shines more in the matured listner category. Their music is also evenly spread across the global continent. Jimi Hendrix was popular for his guitar more on the American spheres and Micheal was lucky to arrive during the age of MTV (known more for his dance then music).
Don Henley had great solo efforts (Dirty Laundry is appropriate in out world today) Glenn Fry had a fair number of solo hits. Joe Walsh...there's a dude you want to check out, for SURE. "Rocky Mountain Way" and "Life's Been Good" are excellent. "Funk #49" he did with The James Gang. As to the Eagles..."Seven Bridges Road" showcases their harmony.
This was when there were REAL musicians that played REAL instruments. And boy, did they ever know how to play REAL music!!!! 👍 Glad to see you appreciate music from days gone by.
Great reaction I'm my humble opinion.... The greatest band & the greatest song 😎 A few of their best hits... I can't tell you why Desperado One of these nights Life in the fast lane Tequila sunrise Take it to the limit You'll be a fan and hooked after listening to the above, just like I was 🦅
Greatest song? Check this one out from 1969 and then declare Hotel California is still the greatest song: ua-cam.com/video/VAnh1waFPeY/v-deo.html. You will be humbled....
Welcome to the Eagles who in my mind are the BEST band EVER!...They started out as a country rock band and progressed to being a rock band but their songs almost always have a southern country element in them...As you can see from the video they are just as good if not better in live performance and all of their songs are epic. There is no real Hotel California...The lyrics are about the drug scene in California in the 1970s
When the live version sounds just like the studio version, you know you've got a good one! "Take it to the Limit" and "Peaceful, Easy Feeling" are good ones and there are others. This song has one of the most famous guitar rifts in rock-n-roll history (not surprisingly). The drummer, Don Henley, also went solo at some point. I love his "Boys of Summer" - you would too. Great reaction!
Great reaction, I agree. The band broke up and swore they would only get back together when/if Hell freezes over. Don Henley had several solo hits, including Boys of Summer. But so did Joe Walsh, remember Life's Been Good ("My mazerati does 185, I lost my license now I don't drive". Some years later the band did get back together and they called it The Hell Froze Over Tour. :)
Those of us born in 60 s grew up with this group high school when hotel California came out
In the US, we just call this Southern Rock, babe. One of the greatest songs ever produced.
Those are the REAL musicians!!!!
What do you don’t see anymore is real musicians playing live with no click track, and no backing track. This is live from the ground up.
ikr...pure talent
The Eagles hold the record for the most and 3rd most albums ever sold. Sandwiched in there is a little album called Thriller by Michael Jackson. Legendary isn’t even the word. They’re immortal.
Loved your face when they started harmonizing. No auto tuning just huge amounts of pure talent.
You picked the right performance to watch. This is the classic line up at it's best. Walsh and Felder's duel at the end is sublime.
Randy Meisner!!! Subtle bass line on all his stuff is fabulous.
This was our music. We called it just rock. Those of us born in the 40s and 50s loved this group.
I was born in the late 80's. I've loved The Eagles forever and I'm excited to say I'm seeing them live tonight!! (Sadly without Glenn, of course.) So while those born in the 40s and 50s may love the Eagles, just know many other generations do too. All love.
@@Zero-yd7dm That's great. I love to hear a younger generation likes our music too.

Born in 2006 and love the Eagles
Snd we STILL love them!!💜💜🤘🤘🤘🎶🎼🎵🥁🎙🎸
The American rock band the Eagles first compilation album, Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975, has just surpassed Michael Jackson's Thriller as the best-selling album of all time. the Eagles' Hotel California is now certified 26-times platinum, which places it right behind Thriller.
Wow congrats to them 😊
Best dueling lead guitar solos ever.
a rock band that has a latin rhythm with this song...legendary song!
OMG. The Eagles dropped both the first and third best-selling albums of the twentieth century. Michael Jackson’s Thriller is number two.
52 years a fan so happy that you are enjoying this music
This band could be called anything from country rock, soft rock, mellow or stoner rock, top 40 rock etc. This song is one of the biggest staples in the history of rock right up there with stairway to heaven.

More Story like singing... don't know if Bardic is the right term
The song was written around a reggae riff the guy with the twin neck guitar cooked up......🔥
So dark and beautiful at the same time. Classic Rock or Rock
When people who grew up with this song, have to explain that it's not actually about The Beverly Hills Hotel. It's about decadence and burnout, hedonism, addiction, sex, money, greed, corruption... the overall lifestyle of the 1970s.
Country-Rock. Best band ever !

Eagles are brilliant. STILL.
lol
Every Single Member of the band is a lead singer and songwriter. This band is stacked with talent, score of hits, and Hall of Fame members.
We lost the lead vocalist recently. His name was Glenn Frey.

@@stevemurrell6167 A similar chord progression in a song is not a rip off.
Ive always thought Don Henleys pronunciation in this song had a reggae vibe "she showed me da way" "she got da mercedes benz"
I bought the Hotel California 8 track tape on release day; it went on to sell over 32 million copies.
When guitarist Don Felder brought this guitar riff into the songwriting process. They remarked that it sounded like 'Mexican Reggae' so your hunch was right.
They had 4 lead singers and everyone did harmonies. And it’s just rock and roll. Rock has many faces just like jazz, blues, R&B, rap, etc.
I loved your reaction when Joe Walsh was playing the solo.
"He can play".
Understatement ;)
Joe Walsh's back & forth with Don Felder is epic.
They have one of the best selling albums of all time. This song is perfection
I don't hear the reggae, but everybody says that!!! Both the drummer and the lead guitar had solo careers back in the 1980s.

Funy you should mention the reggae sound. They recognized it too and while it was being written, the working title was Mexican Reggae.
Trying to pin down their genre is like trying to staple Jell-O.
In this song, you have rock ballad, but undertones by Caribbean bass licks.
They had so much flavor, they could 'season' a song to taste.

The Eagles sold over 200 million records worldwide. 100 million in the US.
Phi Collins from Genesis is also A lead Vocalist and Drummer!
Good ear on the reggae. They came up with the groove before the lyrics and called it Mexican reggae. Perfect description
They're a rock band with folk and country influences.

Eagles was a versatile band they can play country rock, soft.rock, and also love songs ballad at the same time
Drummers as lead singers, check out Levon Helm and The Band along with Phil Collins and Genesis.
Classic rock! They have so many good songs!
Like Queen and the Beatles, they had at least 3 hit songwriters in the band. Their style was eclectic with a hint of country.
You're right about the Reggae sound. There was a lot of Reggae influences in the rhythms of 70s rock.

I came of age in the 70's. The Eagles were mega-superstars and the probably the most profound soundtrack of that era. Great reaction!
A ballad of sorts that tells a story of life in the fast lane,
Don Henley had great solo efforts (Dirty Laundry is appropriate in out world today)
Glenn Fry had a fair number of solo hits.

The Eagles are one of the GREATEST Bands of all time! In this song Don Henley the drummer sings lead. On others Glen Frey.

No question about that. Saw them at the Cap Center in ,76. Phucking fantastic!
One of the best bands ever
The story behind the song is pretty damn interesting too 🙂💯💯
I have seen them live 11 times, they never disappoint!
Very astute observation! The working title for this song (before they came up with lyrics) was...wait for it..."Mexican Reggae"!
