Fender ’57 Custom Twin-Amp - MORE EVIL THAN YOU THINK..

- Опубліковано 8 жов 2020
- I'm playing an amazing Hand-wired Fender '57 Custom Twin-Amp with a Gibson Les Paul Custom Black Beauty. I bet you didn't know how close to a cranked Marshall Plexi it can sound. I certainly didn't until I played it. I borrowed this amp from Simon Karlsson at Musikbörsen: www.musikborsen.se
What I have learned from Johan Segeborn (so far):
- When in doubt, crank your amp.
- Don't give up on your gear. Tweak away. Most amps have a sweet spot.
- Don't be a brand snob, if it sounds good, it is good, regardless of price or brand.
- Try to play something interesting and musical, don't just shower the listener in a storm of notes.
- Old solid state Peavey combos are great.
- When in doubt CRANK YOUR AMP.
Thank you Johan!
Thanks Andreas, That’s well put, That’s how I go about it as well! Cheers
You forgot the most important thing:
- Everything Johan puts his hands on, WILL SOUND LIKE A MARSHALL PLEXI (better if he is using a Marshall cab with Vintage Celestion Greenbacks).
And sand your speakers to get that broken in sound
@@skylermeredith2522 Yeah, I forgot to mention speakers :-)
@@andreaskragh9464 Johan has added so much informative content its tough to keep track of it all. Have a great day.
Absolutely killer. Thanks for bringing all these amps to the forefront in ways that many people might not think to use! 🙏
Tak Johan. What a wonderful experience to my ears. I enjoyed the bassy flamour. very crispy.
That brings back memories!!!
Those things sound sooo sweet when you crank 'em up.
I had one when I was a teenager back in the '70s. I loved it. My poor mom hated it!!!
That opening Led Sabbath riff from your hands thru that LP into that Twin is simply glorious. Righteous in fact. I can totally hear Ace in that setup as well. Cheers.
Man, legendary tones 1:52! Classic rock and blues rock from 70's all day long! Thank you for your videos. From Brazil.
Thanks man, glad you like them!
Amazing as always Johan!
it is great thing that Fender puts out amps like these again. thanks for the great video Johan.
Thanks man!
Dude, killer riffs. And of course, tone. Clearly, this amp is something that inspires you.
Thanks Matt, I’m glad to hear that!
There is only one Johan. I sensed a tear coming when you expressed your love for the amp
One of the best sounding amps you have had on your channel
I bought my first Twin 57 reissue in 2004. Since then I owned two Twin 57 and two Twinolux EC. They are the exact same amp except for the attenuator and tremolo. I kept buying them back because there's nothing like it. And yes, the Twin 57 is a Plexi in disguise. Except for the much more beautiful clean tones. Best amp ever, period. Welcome to the club Johan!
Hello Johan, just one word for this amp: amazing!♥️ Cheers!
Thanks Vincenzo! Cheers!
The thing looks like it would be the most clean innocent sweet little amp, then you crank it up and it snarls like a beast! Fantastic video as usual. God Bless and rock on 😎👍🎸
Thanks J! Have a nice weekend!
Thank you for doing musicians, the world over, such a great service! Soooo helpful and thorough in your experimentation. Thank you, thank you, thank you! From the USA 🇺🇸
Thanks! Great to hear that!
Being a Marshall, Vox and blackface fender lover this designed became my favorite, the 5e8 have a unique vibe that none other amps have, and part of it is it’s unique circuit with a cathodyne phase inverter that give a gorgeous harmonic content before fell apart into the gnarliest distortion ever, is not as stout and articulate as the long tail phase inverter of Marshalls but this give it it’s own voice, it’s have it’s very own character and for me is a temperamental amp, having also a cathode follower with local feedback for the baxandall EQ and a big Choke before the power amp plates with double rectifier and extra power grid filtering make a unique thin skin solid beast that only few can understand and tame, control and ride it, you amazingly show the small nuances and big roars of this creature Johan, great demo of a very underated amp that I guess is because is not for everyone, 🥃 cheers!
Well done Johan! Great Tones and Demonstration! I Love it Too!
Lucky to have a great friend like Simon! Be Well All! Enjoy your Weekend!
Have a nice weekend Steven!
Damn, I used to think 7ender was overrated until I found your channel!
Heck, used to think Vintage Amps were overrated until I found your channel (which is now 1 of my FAVORITE UA-cam channels!)
LOVE IT!
Love it! I hear The Rolling Stones coming out of that amp. Vintage rock and roll tones, very clean and crisp. Excellent as always Johan! 👍🏻🎸🤟🏻 - Kurt
Thanks Kurt!
Killer demo, as always
Such a wonderfull “woody” sound full of overtones....
Great playing as usual Johan!!
Thanks Jason, I’m glad to hear that!
Damnnn !!! I own an amp like this and never thought I could get this sound (possibly because I never crancked the amp to this volume...) I'm going to try today! Thanks Johan!!
Thanks John been thinking about getting one of these for a while!
I have a Twin Reverb Reissue and I’m thinking of getting this amp.
Thanks for the video, Johan.
Great demo man...well placed dynamics show this beasts tru colours...i got to go hear one live now. Cuz my first impression is ...damn thats sweet
WowJohan. You are right. That thing sounds great!! You had so.e different, interesting lick that I haven't heard you play before. I really enjoyed it. Thank!!!
Thanks, glad to hear that!
Great tone' ...what a crunch' ...really suited to the Les Paul' and great riffs too, thanks Johan for sharing.
Thanks Ralph!
Your melodic sense certainly has grown steadily this year!
Thanks Kelly, I’m glad to hear that!
Sounds glorious!
That thing sounds fantastic. I immediately thought of all the early 70’s records that could have been recorded with that amp. I want one. Well done, Johan
Thanks man, I’m glad to hear that!
Johan Segeborn New York Dolls, David Bowie Ziggy era, 74/75 UFO, Lenny Kravitz, on and on. This amp does it. This is the tone that I’ve always wanted in a new amp
@@jahjah67 how do you think it compares to a bassman volume and tone wise?
By the seventies many players were using plexi's or some other Marshall's if not black or silver face fenders. Even Blue Cheer in the mid-sixties had multiple marshall stacks. To opt for a vintage late 50's Fender bassman then you would have to have been lucky to find one and broke or both. IMO. Or just plain Savvy.
Thank you, dear sir. Tweed Fenders are the BOMB.
Thank you! I love your videos 👍
Thanks Peter! I’m very glad to hear that!
I always love the sounds you get from any amp you touch. I recently got an Orange CR120 (affordable solid state amp) and I'm really enjoying it. It would be great to hear what you could get out of one of those.
Thanks man, glad to hear it! I’ll keep the CR120 in mind!
Who says you can't make a great vintage sounding amp out of modern off shore, off the shelf parts. Thanks Johan!
Thanks man!
On a very different note....I love your couch...love the low clean lines
Glad to hear it, the sofa is a Carmo from the Danish company Bo Concept
King of all Amps!💪💪💪
My dad has a peavey classic 20 and it works for djent! Twees amp circuits are amazing. The perfect blend of tightness and fuzzyness
Johan knows how to turn simple chords into a real pleasure on every amp.
Damn, that really does sound great.
Crap! What else seriously you need? A good overdrive wah and analog delay and vibe...thats it ! Its there ! And the most important tool ... your volume and tone knob ! Loves it !!!!! Thanks Johan !
Thanks, glad to hear that!
Always with me! Still my favorite!
Hi, Johan!
That was my last amp before I was gone to the stopocalipsys and my band is waiting for the better times. Well known and proofed amp👍!
Have a nice weekend!!😉
See you!
Z.
Have a great weekend Zigfrid!
Nothing like a tweed twin and a gibson! Seems like there is a mojo with this amp and a good set of humbuckers. I bet that amp was cooking, i can't get mine past 4-5 unless the crowd is acclimated to the volume.
Would be great to hear it with some NOS Mullard or RCA tubes
As always another great vid Johan 👏👏
omg that sound awesome goodjob man
Thanks Ahmet, I’m glad to hear that!
amazing amp.sounds great .top player johan the king.
Thanks, that's very kind you
That is a freaking beast omg I have to get one now
OMG! this thing is amazing..I just found out about these today. I've been under a rock I guess.
I have a Fender Mustang amp, which I love because it’s got all kinds of settings for experimenting and getting a variety of tones, but my favorite amp preset is the 57 Twin. Imagine the look on my face when I see how much those things go for.
Pure tone!
This reminds me of that video of Clapton with the Lucy Les Paul repro when he plugs into a Tweed Twin and says “I’m afraid I’m going to have to turn this up, you’re not going to like this,” and I’m thinking to myself “Wanna bet, Eric?” 😆😆 Those guys in the early days of Fender just got it right way early on. I’d love to sit in a room and listen to Johan do his thing on that rig!
Thanks Cornelius! ;-)
Sounds awesome!! Would love to hear this amp blended with one of your Marshalls
Thanks!
This one is just awesome.
Thanks Marco!
A MASSIVE sounding amp! \m/
Thanks DMS, glad you like it! Have a great weekend my friend!
@@JohanSegeborn You too bro!
Cranking out some mean sounds there , Mr Segeborn !! You know, the amazing thing is that every time you plug in to a "57 custom" it sounds like a record. - Awsome Amps !

sweet tone on the chords at 4:09!!!...super johan!!

A Twin Tweed? Didn't knew this one! Sounds nice😎
Thanks Kiko!
Johan has become one hell of a guitar player
That sag is great. Good one Johan
Thanks man, glad to hear it!
Would be great to see SPL readings during these videos. I expect this Twin was ridiculously loud 🤣🤣
I don’t care what anybody says, nothing beats a guitar,a cable and a cranked tweed fender amp for TONE.pure smooth raw musical tube breakup, distortion.just THE Rev Billy Gibbons, master of tone!
Oh, on topic.....awesome sound...btw you got me hooked on vintage tweeds....my wife hates you but I love ❤️ you. LOL 🤟🏻
Hahaha! Offer my apologies to your wife. Cheers!
Leo tuned this amp to have some “hair on the notes” to make the western swing and country music guys happy. They were playing bigger venues by the late 1950s and wanted to keep the smaller amp sound they liked but at the higher volumes they needed.
Great sounding amp, seems to do KISS and Stones sounds no problem and loud! Thanks for sharing, have a great weekend, Johan!
Have a great weekend Mark!
I was going to say the same! I hear KISS tones!!
@@Twobarpsi I think the Kiss tones are part of Johans DNA! He draws forth some amazing tones from all his amp demonstrations.
I have this amp and i replaced the speakers with greenbacks. I love it.
Love it! I have the same one. It's one of the best natural drive sounds I've heard. It's a pedal king too. :)
Thanks Paul
Hi Paul, do you still love this amp after a few years of ownership? I cant decide on this or to wait for the Fender 1948 JB Dual Professional which has yet to be released.
@@starkickermusic2100 still have it and it’s still one of my favourite amps of all time.
@@starkickermusic2100 also just to let you know. I bought the Eric Clapton version to compare it to this amp and I wound up selling the Eric Clapton. This sounded better to my ears plus I didn’t want Clapton to sue me. Lol!!!!
Lol so how loud do you usually have to set it to find the sweet spot?are you running pedals into it?
Sounds ace mate
Thanks man!
Amazing 🎸
Thanks Michel!
it really sounds great.
Thanks Ben!
i have one of those sitting next to me as I type. I have 3 amps and i'm trying to decide which one to sell before i move. Marshall Origin, Tweed Twin and Tweed Deluxe (both the handwired fender 57) - so I've been doing a shootout for the past couple of months. So far the Twin is the winner. My new neighbors won't like the decision but it's so damned lively. It just makes me keep playing. Stock speakers are great too.
I think my favorite thing is the treble doesn't kill my ears. When i play my marshall my tinnitus flares up immediately, with the Twin it isn't too ice picky. Even the deluxe has some harshness. I wish i could get the Twin tone and feel in the Deluxe size and weight.
Tune down to Eb and it sounds mean as hell.
You can buy 6 origins for the price of one Custom Twin, so if the choice isn’t obvious get rid of the fenders
Regarding tinnitus from your Marshall, don't forget how much of an impact your speakers can have on fine tuning your tone. I have a Soldano Astroverb which can vary between sounding perfect with a mahogany guitar to being, perhaps, just a bit bright when playing high notes way up on the neck on a strat.
This is caused DIRECTLY by the Vintage 30 speaker (G12H30s can be harsh and "shouty" too).
So, make sure that you don't have a Vintage 30 right now.
If you do, you can get something without that upper mid and treble boost in it. I can tell you that the Warehouse Guitar Speakers Retro 30 takes away the V30s EQ bump, BUT the result is that it is missing that "something" that the Vintage 30 has.
Because you have tinnitus, my advice is to get a used soldano astroverb (they aren't made anymore) so that you do not have to crank the power section in order to get the tone from the preamp to sound good.
It's probably like a hotrodded JCM800. It is based on the SLO's Clean channel with the crunch switch on.
The stock soldano speaker is an Eminence Legend V12, so it is a gritty piece of crap. Also, the 1x12 combo cab does not sound good at all. So you might as well look for a head.
What I like about the soldano is that the distorted rhythm crunch sounds amazing, yet the single notes up high on the neck are smooth and buttery- not buzz, fizz, grit or fuzz. This is still true at minimum volume, with someone asleep 20 feet away in another bedroom.
I don't have any experience with Marshall other than buying a DSL40 combo in 1999 and returning it the next day because it sounded like a can of bees, but, in comparison, soldanos probably have a little bit of high mid spike which might actually be specifically bad for your tinnitus, BUT not if you don't have to crank the power section (which you don't!) or if you use something other than vintage 30s or G12H30 in your 2x12.
I wouldn't say that a soldano sounds "warm" like a Fender. In fact, it is pretty hi-fi and... um... surgical?
But I never crank it up loud so all i am hearing is the preamp.
Mike Soldano designed his amps for the power tubes to NOT effect the tone... so, why am I posting this on this channel? haha
The Greenback is Mike Soldano's favorite speaker with his amps. He told me that he doesn't think the Vintage 30 goes well with his amps. Interestingly, the new factory that is making his amps is selling them with Vintage 30s.
what do u think of these speakers for this amp ? what would u put there in case u dont like them
These 57 custom twins along with the EC Twinolux are the best amps I’ve played
Nice video as always ! You should try a 5F8-A ! You would really love it. It sounds closer than Plexi amp. It's a kind of 2x12" 80W Bassman. I love it. Because of that I made a kind of 40W Tweed Bassman/Twin clone in a out of order Hot Rod Deluxe with a SPL channel and a Twin/Bassman second channel. The Power stage is pretty much the same than in a Tweed Twin/Bassman and JTM45. It sounds amazing !!!
Thanks, we did the high power Twin earlier on the channel
@Johan Segeborn Jeg gikk glipp av det! Jeg skal sjekke det ut med en gang. 👍
Sounds like a super lead without the prominent mids. Awesome!
Thanks!
God that's badass!
Thanks Joe!
Hi friend! I can't help wondering what this terrific tweed buddy would sound like hooked up to the 1960A or B with 4 pulsonics in..... Probably gorgeous. When I have my Peavey Classic 50 reinforced by a parallell cabinet with the 15 inch Fullback in, it sounds huge and happy.
Very nice!
Thanks E
Sounds fantastic! Did you have the amp on full in the video?
Brilliant tone Johan. Joe bonnamassa uses the high power twins and they do sound really great but he playes them flat out. Great stuff
Thanks Darren! I dimed his one too. Keith uses HP Twins as well
@@JohanSegeborn i expected nothing less Johan you are the king of loud.

The “Original Dual Rectifier”!
Can confirm, these are way dirtier than a 5F6/5F6A Bassman. Twin 5U4’s do NOT sag at this output level. Very tight, crisp, powerful bass with a singing vocal quality at the same time. I prefer the Bassman for the 4X10 setup, but I wouldn’t roll a 5E8 out of bed.
I'm all digital any more, and the 5F8 tweed hi-power in my Axe Fx is one of the best. Hotter and harder with a firmer bass than you would expect from a tweed. Very roaring lion but different than a Plexi.
A real 59 or 57 Twin is also quite different from a plexi. Thanks for reporting that the world of simulation has some resemblance to the real world. The Twin reissue of this video, which I assume we’re discussing, does sound like a plexi though.
I have listened to the 05 cream reunion shows so many times, it’s uncanny in some passages, the way it can sound Marshall like as you said in the description. Sometimes very fender, sometimes fender with the boost from the guitar and sometimes quite Marshall like. I still have not had a chance to try one.
Jack Bruce said they tried to rehearse with the old Marshall stacks but it didn't sound right.
How much is the volume up on this amp? Would it b loud enough to play with loud drummer if I plugged it into 412 cab with sensitive speakers?
I built one of the Weber kit versions. Play it through a 4x12 cab with reissue Celestion G12M-25s. Phenomenal clean sound. Too scared to crank it all the way. 😂
Sounds absolutely great! Is it the power twin Bonamassa uses too?
Just one thing ,i would expect better filter cap , at least f & t in an amp like this...no??
This is the 57 reissue. The high power version came in 59
I love the sound of this amp, however it would make an interesting video how this amp and a bassbreaker 45 compares.
Really great demo Johan! I’m curious, did you have all the knobs dimed? I also have a Low Powered Tweed Twin made by my father in law w/ vintage Jensen P12 Q speakers, but mine does not do the Marshall thing quite like yours. Rock on! 😎
Thanks David, i used s bunch of settings throughout actually. Cheers
I built my own out of a Mojotone cabinet & chassis. My favorite tweed ever.
How much did that cost!? I want a copy of this amp/circuit.
@@erikhartley2494 Cost depends upon options or whether you have them build it for you. Very high quality components. I found the chassis and transformers on an Ebay auction, then bought the component board & ground plate from Weber. I ordered the cabinet from Mojotone (their cabinets are outstanding) and the 12A150-A alnico 12" speakers from Weber, too. I then hand selected all the small parts. You can save yourself all that trouble by simply ordering their kit. Here's the link: www.mojotone.com/kits/TweedAmpKits_x/Mojotone-Tweed-Twin-Low-Power-Style-Amp-Kit
I would love to own and play on a Fender Tweed Twin. I agree with someone else who mentioned the GC video with Clapton playing Lucy into one. Got me hooked right away. Such an amazing sounding amp. Sounds every bit as amazing here.
Unfortunately, between the price and the fact that I can't turn any amp up beyond the volume of a TV 99% of the time, it would be a total waste. Don't suppose there is Twin tone at conversation volume... The Roland Cube Artist 2x12 on 0.5 watt setting maybe?
In my experience, the idea that "You must crank it loud enough for power tube saturation to have good tone" is something we learn from internet forums, but it is not true at all if you get your hands on an amp with a properly designed preamp section that does not require pushed power tubes to "fix" the bad tone the preamp makes.
If you are playing at TV volume you probably aren't going to hear any of the things that I don't like about all these various modeling softwares that are available. They might work for you.
Or you could run a BOSS Blues Driver Pedal into a Fender Blues Junior and use an overdrive for soloing.
My soldano astroverb can make any of these tones in this video at whisper volume because the preamp is properly designed.
The internet will tell you that you need all kinds of particular gear and that you need to crank your amp for good tone.
It's all BS. Practice playing guitar. You will sound like you through anything. Every pro who got to play Eddie Van Halen's rig found that they sounded like themselves playing Eddie's rig.
If you identify something in your rig that does not sound good- get rid of it and replace it with something that satisfies you.
All this OCD gear obsession nonsense didn't even exist until the internet started spreading GAS disease.
This comment should NOT be misunderstood or confused as being ANY kind of slam in ANY way to Johan or his FANTASTIC CHANNEL, wonderful videos or excellent playing!!!! In fact, chances are that he very well may agree with me about people going overboard with GAS and needing to practice instead... as long as Johan has a good vintage Marshall into vintage Greenbacks in a 4x12 and a good Les Paul, he's probably not to concerned about gear OCD.
We don't need gear, we need to practice!
Rock on!
I kept hearing people saying how loud this amp is but I’m someone who loves playing loud. So I found myself asking myself, how loud could a 2x12 be? Well I just got mine yesterday and I must agree this amp is hurt you loud. Beautiful sounds coming out of it though. Everything people say about this amp is true. I’ve never had an amp that I didn’t want to change something, tubes or speakers etc. until this one. Fender says you can pull one of the rectifiers or put 12ax7’s in place of the 12ay7’s and I’ll get to that later but for now I’m just playing it.
best amp I ever owned
This is the RI of the 5E8A that, unlike most 6L6 based Fender amps, has a cathodyne phase inverter rather than the usual long tail type. The cathodyne phase inverter was not at all common in the later 6L6 based amps but it was used in the 6V6 based Princeton Reverb and the tweed Deluxe 5E3 both of which are legendary. I wonder if the cathodyne PI has something to do with the tone that so many prefer. The 5E8A is the tweed low power twin, the 5F8A is the high power version with four 6L6 power tubes but they move to the more common long tail PI.
Brad "The guitologist" serviced one of these in his latest video, but that had different preamp-tubes and just one rectifier tube. Nice amp.
It is always interesting to try to swap the first and the last preamp tube on af Fender, one at a time, and the both. To 12AY7 (first) and 12AT7 (last) the Phase Inverter.
An easy, cheap and reversible mod.
Crikey that's a sound 🌻
Cheers!
This and the Blackface Bassman may be the best sounding amps you've demoed.
Johan, I saw a rig rundown with Bonamassa where he said he was also surprised by how heavy these amps could sound. I believe he said he could play Slayer on one of these...
This is easily one of the best sounding modern amps I’ve heard. Great organic breakup without any sterility. Sounds like they kept the filtering to vintage specs, where so many modern amps are over filtered.
Killer tones and playing as usual. Cheers!
Thanks Nick! Yeah many modern vintage reissues are made with an exaggerated vintage tone to play it safe. That often make them flat and low resolution. This one is vintage sounding but also high resolution sounding and with a killer attack. Cheers!
I think Joe has hi power twins
@@darrenc8776 Yes, that's right. Good point. Maybe the high power twin is even more Evil!
@@darrenc8776 I'd love to hear a shootout between this and the Bonamassa High powered Twin.

I had the volume close to 8 for many parts. Cheers
That's a very expensive amp and Fender does a great job,,but,,,, they fill the amp with IC CAPS!! They are so so quality.
