    Gorgeous! And very interesting how your way of playing varies so much as a function of the amp: more subtle and rolling with the low power, more rocking with the 59. Obviously we all need both!

    Great comparison as always. They both sound awesome but with different overtones. The low power has that great crunchy warmth and the high power will kick you in the face. I like them both. Eric said he started playing the tweed twin lp because it sounded like his Marshall bluesbreaker. Would like to see that comparison.

      All you will need is for Eric Clapton or Keith Richards to ask you to sit in.......and bring your high-powered Twin to match theirs! If it's Joe Bonamassa then no worries, he owns so many of them he should be able to bring a spare for you to plug into. I am a pro harmonica player (48 years) and have owned about 9 original Tweed Bassmans but not one of these.....I know they are good for Harp too.

      @stevemitchell2252 6 років тому

      Johan Segeborn tell me ...how in the hell can you understand the sound quality of these amplifiers when you're playing DISTORTION !!!!!!!!! Through both of these amplifiers??? Play a nice clean jazz style riff through these amplifiers then these amps will really sound like they're supposed to sound...

    • @johnester8421
      @johnester8421 5 років тому +7

      steve mitchell He's not using "distortion", that's the amps overdriving. This video actually does really well at showing how each one reacts differently when cranked. (Cause you know... tubes) And the reason these are some of the most sought after amps is NOT because of their clean tones. That's what Blackface Fenders and Roland JC120's are for. Tweeds are known for their overdriven tones. It's because of overdriven Fender tweed amps that Marshalls, and rock n roll in general, exist.

    I'm not particularly surprised that I prefer the 5F8A to the 5E8. There are substantial differences in the preamps and phase inverters between the E and F generations. The 5F6A is basically the 5F8A with the 5E8 power section, and a 5F6A with one or two 12" Celestion AlNiCo Creams is probably my ideal amp, right now.

    Johan- I would expect the low power Twin to break up a lot more at similar volumes because it would be being pushed harder. But that didn't seem to be the case and they seemed to have similar distortion characteristics with neither being noticeably cleaner than the other. Were they at the same volume? If so, why do think the high powered one didn't have more headroom?

    Wow, they really are both great. If I had to choose it would it wouldBe the low power, I think it had a little more articulate sound in the chords.

      +BB2009LZ Thanks, That is very perceptive of you! I put the wrong picture in the intro!! Damn :-) We're actually gonna compare a 59 bassman to one of these in a couple of days. But the rest of the pics in the clip are accurate. Cheers

      Johan Segeborn thanks!! .... Why do you prefer the tweed, is it more versatile or is it the type of tone?

  • @kimhansen6384
    @kimhansen6384 5 років тому

    Wonder if there are anybody here who knows if it is the preamp, the PI or the power amp that gives the Tweed shimmer/bite? It seems like people like the long
    tailed pair PI best, from the ´59 amp.
    I like the slight shimmer when the Tweed amps break up, but I dont need more than 50w, so I thougt that a Tweed single channel preamp with the later PI and
    cathode biased 50w power amp with no FB, could be a good combination. And then omitting the cathode follower. That means just 2 preamp tubes and 2 power
    tubes. And It would still be possible to implement a presence control.
    ... But maybe this is the wrong place to ask.
    I have had very good results by omitting the cathode follower on a AC-15 kind of amp. Often you will have 1/2 of a tube idle, when you design amps, when you
    dont do that.

    I'll take the 59&57 please. Both sound great. I lean toward the HP a little more for the sag it has. It's distortion has a bit more teeth to it as well. But, that 57 is nice to. I can't find anything bad to say about either. Well, except that I don't have either damnit!

  • @druwk

    The breakup of the Low Power is classic, squishier very pleasant. The HP has amazing definition clean but seems a little harsh overdriven?

  • @ddzanovski
    @ddzanovski 7 років тому

    both are awesome. both share similar tone. i'd compare the '59 to say the high input of a plexi type amp and the '57 to the low input of the same amp.

    Unless you're playing in large venues, the hi-power is probably way too loud. I had a '70 silverface twin (pre-master volume) and in a club it was too loud with the volume on 3. After I blew the speakers I put in JBL D-120s and it was all over. That amp used to blow away Marshall stacks. Could never get a decent overdriven tone from it however...

    • @JohanSegeborn
      @JohanSegeborn  7 років тому +1

      +Mike Austin The high power here is 80watt, in the 1970s some of the versions were even 130W and the JBLs are much more efficient speakers than the Jensens, so I can imagine one or two surprised Marshall players ;-)

    • @michaelwoods9005
      @michaelwoods9005 Рік тому

      A high power tweed twin isn't anywhere near as loud as a 70s twin reverb. The power supply is much more limited.
