We are just an hour or so way and make a couple of trips each year. We are very lucky to live so close. One of my favorite things to do is to visit Boxley Valley at sun rise to see the Elk Herd in the mist. So many gorgeous hikes in the area and spring waterfalls... it is a gift. This video is great, but as great as this video is, I don't believe it does justice to the actual beauty of a visit.
I always looked forward to visiting my grandparents every summer who lived on Gaither Mountain outside of Harrison. So going to Ponca off the back of the mountain was our go to for fun! I have so many wonderful memories of the Buffalo river. It's beauty is majestic and always needs to be cared for, definately a treasure that the state of Arkansas is so very fortunate to have ❤
I love the Buffalo National River and feel blessed to have experienced the River, the trails, and the wonderful feeling I have when I visit there. What a special, majestic place❤️
I live right there, 5 minutes from the Buffalo river in Ponca. Go fishing every weekend it is warm. Lucky to have found this place a few years ago for sure
Floated the whole river in one shot in flood stage with my best friend this year. We had rain every day! If you know you know… all I can say is the turn after rush landing during flood stage is insane. After that it’s 23ish miles of wilderness till you hit the white river! Such a cool bucket list item checked off!
I just with the fishing was better than I've experienced on the Buffalo. The scenery is amazing and some of the best you can see while floating. I saved many people one float trip from a fallen tree that covered the whole river. It was one in which could take a persons life getting jammed underwater, with the type of current on that day. It wasn't surprising that many people weren't willing to help others from getting in a dangerous situation. They just watched as people headed for danger. This was on the middle upper section, which I don't recommend for new floaters for most of the year. The lower sections is one for most floaters.
This was incredibly inspiring! I’m taking my family there this summer. My kids need to experience this magic. Thank goodness for the dedicated conservationists and park workers that have kept this protected.
I give a prayer of thanks for Dr. Compton every time i head out to the Buffalo. While i do enjoy my White River reservoirs, what a crime it would have been to drown this place.
many generational farms were taken from families by the National Park Service, forcing then to sell their home and land to the government for less than what the land was worth. Then to make matters worse the Park Service turned around and leased the bottom lands to others to use as hay fields. Seems the government has a history of forcing people off land they want. I have first hand experience, as a teenager I lived in the Erbie area and went to school with some of the children of these families, I helped cut hay and repair fences on these lands. Private swimming holes were soon over ran with people, leaving the areas trashed.
My stepson, J. Griffing has floated the river from Boxley to the White River twice. He’s also got the documented fastest time to hike / run the Buffalo River Trail. See: #getoutmoreyall.
He’s hiked the Ozark Highlands Trail twice too. Once was in December when it got down in single digits. His mama was crying, “My baby is gonna freeze to death!” 🙀😼

Woah! I’m too sketched out to try something like that, but it sounds amazing!
I wish I had moved to northern Arkansas 20 years ago instead of Missouri. What a wonderful place!
Well done. I will be planing a trip there soon. Keep the wild things wild.
Have fun! Thanks!

6 of us are going up next week to kayak 35 miles.
Go to Eureka Springs and see the damage done. It's pathetic.

Is this where Ned Beatty met his Waterloo ?
Since when is Arkansas the Midwest?
what else would it be?
Unfortunately we didn't save the Cossatot.
