I had a Springfield in 50-70 I got at the Log Cabin gunshop in Lodi Ohio in about 1972. I didn't keep it very long because ammo just wasn't available. I don't recall what I traded it for now. I do recall it had a lined barrel. When you are kind of poor you trade one gun for one you want more at the time.

Hello again Garrett, Love your 1868 Trapdoor. My opinion is that for being just after the war they were very advanced. Additionally, they retain the cool-ass factor of using the civil war locks that sit proud of the stock. Thanks for the filming and explanation. ....Doc
Good morning guys. I have had a few chances to buy a Springfield trapdoor that hung on the walls of VMI (Virginia Military Institute). It was Nickel plated which turned me off to it. It is not plugged. Condition was fair.Not sure of the bore. The owner wanted 8 "C" notes. Another issue is of coarse ammo. Not sure of the caliber but I am sure it will be sketchy to find ammo to shoot. I'm still considering taking a second look at it, if it shows up again at the local gun show. Great vireo guys.
there was small run of experimental nickel plated model 1868s that were shipped to levenworth in 1869 i believe. no way to tell if that is what it is though as quite a few were nickel plated later for parade duties but those were genraly pluged. thanks for watching
I own a pair of Model 1873 Infantry rifles in 45/70 Gov 405gr that are mild in recoil using smokeless powder, all lead, Winchester Cowboy Loads. I find these rounds accurate and a hoot to shoot. Deer season is right around the corner, and I plan to carry one of my 10-pound rifles into the deer woods. I put a tall front sight on one rifle to sight it in at 100 yards. It was shooting a foot high at 100 yards and the tall front sight fixed the issue. I bought a dozen boxes of 20 rounds at close to $50.00 each box, that I plan to reload after I shoot them up and switching to using black powder loads. Thanks for your videos.
Thanks for another great video. My trapdoor gets hot fast too. 20 rounds is the maximum I will shoot before letting it cool off. Mine shoots about a foot high at a hundred yards.
Great video, really enjoyed it. An early '68 was the first .50-70 trapdoor I acquired and after seeing your video makes me want to pull it out of the safe and shoot it again as soon as we cool down here in N.E. Texas. Was able to shoot a grapefruit sized 5 shot group @ 300 yds with it so know they will shoot well with the right ammo and if in good shape. Also have a '69 cadet I recently acquired but have yet to shoot it, was waiting to load up some 55 grain loads but noticed your shoulder didn't seem to suffer much with the full-sized loads. If you ever come across a '88 carbine, be sure to get it if you can, believe it to be the most fun of the .45-70's to shoot, handles much easier than the long-barreled rifles and is a bit more accurate than the 22" carbines. Will surely be looking forward to more in your Trapdoor series.
What's sad about the original trapdoors, was the poor quality ammo they got saddled with, had they had brass & not copper at Little Bighorn, Custer might not have been curb stomped as hard as he'd been, maybe even survived.

As the story goes if this gun could talk. It must have been used in battle. It could have ben used also in hand to hand combat. It probably has hit someone's head. David Back.
Always love a new video from you guys. I've been wanting to put stampings on my new 1733 French Navy Pistol from MilitaryHeritage. Specifically a crown using a metal imprinting stamp. I haven't drilled the flash hole yet because I'm wanting to do this. Do you guys know of any procedures for barrel stamping or should I take it to a gunsmith and have them do it?
You might join some Facebook groups on the subject of muskets and reenacting groups. There was somebody who knew somebody on one of those groups and I can't remember which one it was that made custom stamps for marking replica flintlocks
I was shooting my Pendersoli Trapdoor Carbine .45-70 the other day at 35 yards and that thing shoots low. I had to really adjust my front sights aiming above the head of the man steel target just to hit center mass. I even put two through the 2x4 stand below the target. 405 gr bullet in front of 60 gr of 2F Triple 7
Just a hunch, but for the broken rifle, I have a feeling that somebody let their 10 year old play Davy Crocket with grandaddy’s old black powder rifle (thinking this old thing is just a toy now and not safe to shoot). Swung at an imaginary Mexican soldier or Creek Indian warrior and hit something that cracked it
Good video! I have a 50 caliber barrel coming, maybe been in the mail for more than a month now. However when it does show I cannot rechamber it to 50-90, as it is of a true .500 bore diameter. Any guess as what the chamber might be??. Hint max chamber pressure is 62,000 psi
@garrett11bangbang no! good guess though. Cartridge is brand new. And produces over 2000 fps out a 10.5" pistol barrel. Case length of 2.45" a 450 grain bullet hit 2350 fps. It will be the first time in my history I add a muzzle break to a 22" barreled rifle, as I think it will recoil harder than the 72-150 Mukwa express. This is going to I believe give me the capacity of a 50-100 for BP, a velocity capability of 25-2600 fps for the 500- 600 grain bullet for smokeless. Now with note what would be your guess the velocities of the 72-150 Mukwa express would be? As the next time I take to the range I'm going to test three of the four bullets with the 120 grain charge.
@garrett11bangbang which would be awesome for in my opinion. Especially considering the the standard one once slug runs anywhere from 1250-1350 fps. My lightest bullet is just over 1.5 onces and the biggest is a touch over 2 onces

If you want to load faster as per period accounts put 3 rounds one between each finger on the fore stock, loads a couple seconds faster

Yes, that means that the lock was repurposed from a model 1863 Springfield. But if your gun has all the features I described it is still a model 1868
