I would have guessed it was a fuel problem too. Wow....learn something new everyday for sure. Ive experienced vapor lock that had similar effects. No power, even stalling out of the engine. Would never have thought it was the spark arrestor. Thanks for sharing, Chad! 👍
I never guessed that it was the spark arrestor either. I’ve checked them dozens of times on this trimmer and the saws - they always look basically new. But not this time. The Stihl techs at the dealership said that about 90% of the time when one comes in with this issue - it’s that spark arrestor being clogged.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. Saved buying a new carb. Took out the flame arrester, heated it with a torch, wire brushed it. Runs like new! Great advice!
Great video. I never realized how easy it was to change a carb and as for the spark arrestor, never knew there was one. Great job and you explained it very well.
Dude you are the man!!!! Cleaned my carb and experienced the same issue. Never heard of a spark arrestor. Took it out, burned it clean and she runs like it's brand new. Thanks!!!
Ho MY GOD, Yes That WAS A Dirty Spark Arrestor 😮 OUTSTANDING INFORMATIVE VIDEO THAT YOU HAVE MAKE SIR 👌😇👍ETHANOL IS SOOOO BAD,,,, Have a nice week End Sir Cheers 👍👍😇😇👌👌🍻🍻
Thanks, Dave. I just used the trimmer tonight for about 3 hours. It runs SO much better. It's amazing what that restriction in the exhaust can do. Have a great weekend!

Way to make lemonade out of lemons Chad! Turned a misdiagnosis into twice the content. 👍 #Winning I had no idea about the spark arrestor, so good to know. Also, I don't think all that gunk was a recent buildup...it was a LOT...so I doubt a recent change in fuel brands had a significant impact. (IMO). 👍😎
Sometimes I can’t predict the direction a video will go - even with a plan. :) I don’t think it was the fuel either. My best guess is that I wasn’t running it hard enough lately. If 1/2 throttle was enough to do the job, I wasn’t revving it all the way up.
FYI, Run recreational gas in all your gas oil mix engines and you won't have carburetor issues nearly as often. I used to replace my carb once every year or two. Since I switched to rec gas, I haven't had to replace a carb yet. Recreational gas contains no ethanol.
Great point! When we're not using the Motomix, we do run Ethanol-free gasoline (0% Ethanol). I'm not sure if this is different than recreational gas like we get in our boat at the marina.
You don't need to change the whole carburetor; just clean it with brake cleaner. When torching the spark arrestor, all you need to do is heat it with oxyacetylene. Once it turns red, turn off the acetylene, and the oxygen will burn the carbon off

Good morning, I'm having the same issue with my Stihl 131R. I'll start with the spark arrestor , thank you.
Keep us posted! If it's not that spark arrestor, the carb would be my next suggestion.

I cleaned the carby. Changed my fuel and was about to pull it apart till I saw the part about the spark arrestor and it runs like new again. Great vid
Awesome! I'm glad this video was helpful.
Just as you stated. Got mine fixed. You saved me a lot of money.

I tend to run mine the same way, so Ill have to reconsider my usage! Is yours also a "four mix" model? Mine FS90R is.
Awesome video thanks for the step by step on how to fix it.
Glad it helped!
Dude great video to the point and very helpful thanks

Stihl FS35 does not have this spark arrestor. it's a complete sealed unit. I have tried cleaning it with acetone but no difference. Any ideas?
Sorry to hear that - I don't know how you'd ever get that sealed unit cleaned out.
I just bought a new Sthil 2 months ago. I'm going to be pretty mad if I have to clean stupid spark arrestor that often. It seems useless
Just make sure you run it a full throttle. they're not made to run at 1/2 of slow speeds.
@@PurpleCollarLife Always a good move
