A massive thanks for this video Charles. My KM 56RC was suffering the same problem, and I just assumed it was the carburetor. So, I bought a replacement, tried fitting it, and nothing changed. I had noticed over the years that the trimmer was slowly performing worse and worse. This simple fix has brought the whole thing back to life again. I was on the verge of just buying another trimmer. Awesome!! This video is the exact reason that UA-cam should exist. Greetings, from down under here in Australia!! (Even though it's 6 years later :) )
For the last 18 months I've not let the lawn crew edge or use a weed eater in my back yard. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx_rBCFuDW1zD6blTGhLkvAkxU657uR_lG I didn't like the fact that they just kept cutting the edge of the lawn further and further from the rock lining the flower beds and leaving bare ground. And the grass was trimmed or scalped several feet around trees, etc. It was a constant battle with them so I told them to just mow and no trimming. I have Zoysia grass so it grows pretty slow. Obviously after a while it could use some trimming. I'm in my 80's so I can't do much of it myself. Finally I decided that if I could find a lightweight battery powered trimmer I might be able to do some light trimming. I decided to buy the LST201 20V trimmer. And it works great for my needs. I have back yard with about 150' of flower beds and several trees to be trimmed. I can lightly trim the whole yard with a single charge! The grass I trimmed was only a few inches high but the trimmer was more powerful than I expected.
Thank you! I had the same problem and cleaned the carburetor, air filter and replaced the spark plug with no luck. Watched your video, cleaned the spark arrestor and it runs great again!
I bought new carburetor, fuel filter, spark plug, air filter, I was 10 seconds away from bashing this thing into pieces. And it hit me check out UA-cam. Thank you for posting this video. You saved this weedeaters life. It stared and ran great first pull. Thanks again
Hello Charles. I did just as you said and now my old FS 56rc works perfectly. Put simply, this video is the most useful and effective I have seen so far on UA-cam. Seriously! Saved me lots of time and money. Well done and many thanks!
Buddy I appreciate your video it took me 3 hours to weed eat quite a bit of grass around the house because of the bogging down in the motor found your video online you save my day thank you appreciate it
Thanks for sharing this video. My FS 55R was doing the same thing. I had replaced the spark plug and air filter and still wasn't running right. I saw your video and cleaned the spark arrestor and it runs like new now. I didn't have a torch for cleaning it but used a 2 burner propane camp stove and it worked like a charm. I held the arrestor over the flame with a pair of vise grips. Thanks again for the tip.
Dude...the first video that actually helped me fix my problem! I liked how you were A) to the point, no endless dribbling on about this or that, B) that you demonstrates what was wrong that you were trying to fix which helped me to know to keep watching and C) that you showed exactly how you resolved it. Only thing I did differently was use water, Comet, and a scrubby sponge to clean mine. Thanks! Saved me a lot of headache!
Thank you so much. I have a KM 56 R and I removed the screw but wasn’t sure I was doing it correct and stopped. Found your video and finished the job. That was my problem with my Stihl and my stihl blower. I appreciate you men for making these videos to help us women save money to do these simple fixes. 3 years ago I paid a small engine shop $120 to clean my back pack blower. What a rip off. A 15 minute job and I was really scammed. Bless you for this video and saving me $250 for t
Charles Waggle Thank you for taking the time to video and post this. I had the same problem with my 55rc. Your video and narration gave me the courage to take it apart, like you did. In addition to cleaning (with a torch) my clogged spark arrestor, I also removed the 4 screws mounting the 'gas bubble' and found the diaphragm hole clogged. I few gentle pushes and it shot a gas stream like it should. I put it back together and it started on the second pull and has been running like a champ since. You made my day happy! Thank you! Dan Peters
After rebuilding the carb, swapping the carb, replacing the fuel filter and fuel line, replacing the spark plug and boot, I was on the verge of throwing this trimmer in the trash. I stumbled on your video and you saved the day. Can’t thank you enough!
I had the exact problem with my 5 year old Stihl edger and was about to spend 40 dollars on a carburetor when i came upon your video. Sure enough , as I easily removed the spark arrestor, I could see the blocked screen . I cleaned it the best way i could think of reinstalled it and back in power. I cannot believe it was that easy. Didn't even have to pull off the start cord. Maybe I read that the screen should be cleaned periodically but never said why. I will keep you in my prayers for a time for sharing your talent and saving us money. Getting rarer every day. I will pass your information on. Thank you, Robert Thaler
I really thanks you. I got a new carburator and still behaving the same. With your video I fixed mine witch was a real headache during days. God bless you. Thanks again
I have the same trimmer, I start it up and noticed the trimmer was bogging out at full throttle. Went into the house and found your video on UA-cam.Got my torch and the rest was history, trimmer was running like new again. You the Man! Thanks!
Thank you, Charles. I've got to finish up 3 acres that can't be mowed in a California high fire area and both my F56's had this same problem. Might be your 1st video, but it was of tremendous help for me.
Thank you very much this video was very helpful. My husband was about ready to give up and just take his weed eater to a shop to get it fixed. He did this and had it running in minutes. You saved us a lot of money. Thank you very much
Man, you saved me. I was thinking it was time for a piston and ring. I had the exact same issue. Cleaned spark arrestor like you showed- my was completely clogged too- and voila … she runs great now. Thanks again CHARLES !!!
I just went out and bought a carburetor for mine today after I took the original apart and cleaned it up. Out back together and still had same problem. So now I think I just wasted money on a new carburetor. Thanks man!!
If my first video is as good as yours Charles, I'll be a happy camper. You clearly identified the problem, said how to fix it, then showed how to get at the part and put it back on... all one handed. Well played, Sir!
Exactly the same thing mine is doing new spark plug and air filter didn't help. So I'm gonna try this thanks so much for taking your time to share with us. Update: pulled the spark arrestor it was indeed clogged. Cleaned it with a torch now it runs like a champ. Thanks again for taking the time to share this with us
I could not believe I found your video the first time I searched for the exact model number and low and behold the same thing was going on with my trimmer, sweet fix keep up your videos
I had the exact same problem and thought I may just need to replace my 10 year old trimmer. With your video, I was able to get it running like new again. Thank you
Sir Charles Waggle my man! I have the same trimmer and last couple times running it she was boggin like a beeotch. I found your video and it was EXACTLY what I needed and I can't thank you enough for the good instruction. Of course I later looked in my manual and of course it says this could be an issue. But, it doesn't say WHERE it is, or HOW to access it and it doesn't tell you how to CLEAN the screen. I used brake cleaner as you suggested and a short hair stiff fine wire brush. Took all of about 5 min to clean that screen out. Screwed her back into place and BOOYAH she runs at full throttle again with NO BOGGING. Thanks a bunch. By the way, to anyone reading this...the Stihl 56RC trimmer is FLAWLESS. I have to keep up with two acres of house and outbuildings and driveway edges and roadway edges etc. This trimmer is a BEAST and if I had to buy one all over again I wouldn't even hesitate to buy it again.
Thanks so much for posting this. It worked 100% and very easy. I called two repair shops and they both had at least a 30 day timeframe. I said what the heck and UA-camd it and saw your video. Incredible!!!
Had same issue with mine. Suspected everything else first. Bad gas, clogged fuel filter or air filter. Saw your video and 10 minutes later had unit running awesome again. You 'da MAN!!
Thank you very much. Your video help me save alot of money. Lol took me maybe 4 min's but I had everything out and a small map gas torch. Thanks again for your help.
My stihl had the same exact problem, after watching your video I removed the spark arrestor and cleaned it with a torch, put back together and fired it up, runs better then ever Thanks for your info!
Lol! My Stihl FS56C suddenly started running rough at top end. This is the third video I watched. I was considering carb adjustments but didn’t think it would suddenly go from running well to poorly. Want chef this video with skepticism but took the arrestor out and mine looked EXACTLY like his. Cleaned with a steel brush and water and now it’s back running like a top! It’s the little things that should be checked first!! Great video!
Thank you so much for this video, I have done everything , new gas filter, spark plug, ait filter, cleaned the carb, as well as the gas tank. No change and I have $ 1500 balance on a job to collect as soon as I finish up a long row of hedges . I put the chain saw and the articulating trimmer on this model and boys and girls it kicks ass! Its not too heavy like the pole saw after a while and that little extra length when it on the pole saw model is a tad too long even when closed as short as you can get it. So I had a sthil watcher and tried it and bam! Im telling you its perfect! And it has so much power compared to any other hedge trimmer Ive ever used
Thw beat part about using the trimmer attachment on the Wacker power head is you dont have to stop and stand back to see how the shrubs are looking or am I HOING to tight or are they straight? No sir, none of that iffy stuff! You are already acouplw feet away which is close enough to see the new growth line and far enough away to inspect the work as you continue without pausing for a second totally full blast confindently spanking that ass like a champ even at the most prestigious homes with the customer right up your rear end making sure its just right, ever have one of those clients who you just want to hand the.trimmers to t and tell them to do it themselves already! Trust me when I tell you, this is the perfect weapon for those type of customer! It scares the shit out of them when they see you hauling ass like you could care less but at the same time with a little practice and time for your shoulders to catch up to your attitude! You will be taking 50% ot better off of your time it takes you to trim shrubs and natural fences and small ornamental trees ! And I also recommend using the chainsaw attachment on the 56 weed wacker power head or swapping the pole saw head to the watcher shaft and scrap the extra pole in the bucket and lighten the load and watch production pick up. Tie 6 or 7 feet of tree rope to the handle after sliding it a bit closer to the power head and then to the d-ring on the bucket just In case you have to ditch it or let it hang while using another saw for a quick and pretty pin point bomb dropped from up top. I've topped complete tops with this set up on the regular and its the next best thing to a hydraulic saw, which has way more power and eats no fuel, but it is a really good bang foe your buck on the cheap compared to the expense of the hydraulic saw and the leas than $500 to set up an old bucket with this set up, its about putting wood on the ground and green in your pocket! You are far enough out of harms way and there ia no flex in the pole like when you have the pole saw set up maxed out, which always puts you in a tough spot, usually a dangerous one, with your shoulders and forearms begging for mercy because they are on fire and if you have ever dropped one from more than a couple feet off the ground you can pretty much plan on a hefty repair. Plus when you max the pole out its putting a ton of stress on that thin little shaft that drive a the trimmers or saw head that it is only a matter of time before you lay out more dough for another set up or a repair. Keep it solid and strong and you can bear the piss out of either or for years and years with regular minimal maintenance and grease at least once a week. Some guys grease daily which to me is a waste! Grease lasts a pretty long time and is made to get hot and do its job, and it does not have to be brand new to work, it just has to lubricate! Once grease is shot or begins to dry out even a little, grease her up so you can hammer it home all day long and you she just wants more and won't quit juat when its getting good! This video about the screen on the muffler! I have been doing this kind of work since 15 years old and I'm 51! Never heard of it! Seems like a bunch of BULLSHIT that is just another way for the manufacturer to hose the customer! And how about the dealers? How many times do you think a guy ends up scrapping a perfectly good unit because of a scumbag dealer who says it can't be fixed and the guy bus a new one and the sealer asks if you just want me to toss it for you? If a dealer ever says that, keep it and fix it yourself or take it somewhere else! Hope I enlightened some of the rookies and some of the tight asses out there! Enjoy high powered 2 stroke motors while we can because its all going to be over before we know it! There is only so much Ozone left and there won't be much to worry about once the ice caps all melt. It will be California all over the earth! Wild Fires! So let it rip while the ripping is good! And gut all the catalytic converters and run all the cheapest gas and kiss your sorry asses goodbye! Prop Me Up BESIDE THE JUKEBOX WHEN I DIE! LORD, I WANT TO GO TO HEAVEN! BUT I DON'T WANT TO GO TONIGHT! FILL MY BOOTS UP WITH SAND! AND PUT A STIFF DRINK IN MY HAND AND PROP ME UP BESIDE THE JUKEBOX WHEN I DIE!
AWESOME VIDEO!!!! Cleaned and took apart whole carb (did not help) before seeing this video. After... runs like the day I bought it, 10+ years ago. Thank you!!
Thanks for this video, save my sthil weeder, have the same problem. I used to clean, gasoline and wire brush and is enough, now it works like new, thank you. Please make more videos
It's a spark ARRESTOR screen, not "resistor" as written in your title! BUT - that was EXACTLY my problem! Once I cleaned it, it ran like new (and it's nearly 30 years-old!) THANKS! 👍🏼
Hey, THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH!!! Your video really explained my problem and I was able to fix it 100%. (It had been bogging down and shaking like a bloody tornado was coming...lol). Thnx. Brian.
thanks a lot i had my trimmer sitting donw for a year and did not know whar it was well i never had the time thanks man u save me some money i was going to place it on the trash thanks
FYI I was able to get the screw out and clean the screen without removing the cover. I had one of those 90 degree screwdrivers to loosen the screw and then used a tiny screwdriver to get the screw out. It's just a sheet metal screw. I put a paper towel in the hole just in case I dropped it and used a magnet to safely retrieve it. Thank You for pointing me in the right direction. Did the whole job in about ten minutes. Now it revs up like it used to!
I have been chasing this problem for a couple years now! 2 carb kits and and curse words I’ve never even heard before and I still couldn’t solve the problem! Then I found your video. Great stuff! One giveaway not mentioned is if you run it wide open (as much as it will)with the air cleaner out you can see fuel spitting out of the open end of the carb. Excessive back pressure I suppose. Anyways, I owe ya a beer man!
Man this was exactly my problem. I was stumped until I found this video. My screen had gunk built up and engine sounded just like yours. Once I cleans the funk it fired up like a charm. Thanks a lot.
Thank you for the video, this nailed the issue I had and 5 minutes later I was golden again. By the way, I had read in my owners manual to NOT oil the felt air filter. I looked for it because that's the way I was learned to do it also. Probably won't hurt anything but thought I'd mention it.
I went through the carb. then 2 more times, thought i had something wrong, never did i think about spark resistor being clogged. I try tomorrow because the hammer was going to take a turn if i did not walk away. Thanks good video!
Thanks for posting! I knew my problem but didn’t know where that plug/screen was located exactly! Thank you!!! 5 minutes later I’m back up and running full throttle!

This was the problem with mine !!! THANK YOU
Yep!
Bingo! My trimmer works because of you. I had almost decided on buying a new one, but it works as good as new. Thanks!

Had the exact same issue this year. Got mine 2 years ago too.
Glad I was able to help you…
I have been chasing this problem for a couple years now!
Joey Stringer you are truly welcome... I am glad to help...
This worked for me as well. Thanks so much for the video!
Thanks for the info. Get yours a headlamp.
Got mine fixed up. Thanks for the tip.
You are welcome
Thank you for the video, this nailed the issue I had and 5 minutes later I was golden again. By the way, I had read in my owners manual to NOT oil the felt air filter. I looked for it because that's the way I was learned to do it also. Probably won't hurt anything but thought I'd mention it.
Mr. Thomas, you are truly welcome and I am glad I was able to help…
I went through the carb. then 2 more times, thought i had something wrong, never did i think about spark resistor being clogged. I try tomorrow because the hammer was going to take a turn if i did not walk away. Thanks good video!
Carl A Bowling no problem I’m glad you liked the video..
Spark arrestor
