Same issue on my Stihl KM 56 yesterday. UA-camd and led me to your channel. Went over the same checklist and it turned out to be the exhaust screen, totally blocked. Didn’t even know there was screen there. About a minute both sides on my gas stove and viola, it did it. Thank you very much.

I watched your video and then fixed my stihl trimmer that was struggling to run at full speed. I went directly to the screen in the muffler. It was about 80% blocked. Used your torch technique and wire brush. It now runs like new. Thanks for the great video.

I had replaced the air filter and spark plug on my Stihl FS56R and it was still sluggish. I found your video and afterward checked the exhaust screen. It was blocked with carbon. I didn't have a torch, but cleaned it with carb cleaner and a wire brush. The carb cleaner didn't do much, but the wire brush eventually got it clean. After re-installing the cleaned screen, my weed eater has its old spunk back. Thanks!

Thank you so much for posting this video. Suddenly my 14 yo Stihl trimmer would only run about half throttle. I replaced the spark plug, air filter and fuel filter. Still wouldn’t run wide open.
Found your video and checked the exhaust screen. As soon as I pulled it out of there, I knew that was the problem. Completely black and plugged up. Before today, I never knew that screen existed.
Burned it clean with a torch and about 20 minutes from start to finish it was running great again. Really appreciate your video.

I had this exact problem on my Stihl FS-85 trimmer. The screen was clogged about as bad as that one was. I just decided to remove it completely. I totally understand safety, but, I don't live in an area with a high fire danger, so it's fine lol. I switched from Stihl HP Ultra oil to Opti 2 oil, and there are zero problems with the engines. I mix it at what the bottle says to mix in 5 gallons of fuel, Throw in Ethanol-free fuel, and all my 2 stroke equipment runs great! Awesome, informative video as usual! Thank you!

Yes I recommend using the Stihl Oil, I’ve always used it and never had any problems except for the spark arrester.
Every Stihl Dealer will tell you to use it at full throttle, which in nature isn’t a normal thing we don’t drive our cars or motorcycles in that manner.
The Stihl Oils like the blue one which has been superseded by the red one or the semi synthetic green one have good lubrications of the pistons but the downfall is the spark arrester clogging with carbon.
The next best oil which was the manufacturers for the Stihl blue oil is Castrol 2T Garden, it is also blue but the only difference it uses less blue dye, as Stihl May requested a larger quantity of dye in their mix which makes easier to identify the mix as 2 stroke oil.

Depending on the amount of time in the garage I normally would throw the screen in my 1 gallon carburetor can. It's the one that has the basket and for a life of me I cannot think of the name but you can pick it up at any parts store. That solvent whatever it is does a great job on carbon. After I take it out I go to my parts washer and rinse it off in there and then dry it and put it back into its proper place. When I'm in a hurry I do the blowtorch method. Over my years of life I have had a lot of people who had father or husbands that passed away and they give me their tools. Over the years I must have at least five or six different propane torches and I make sure to always have cans of propane sitting on the shelf. I never tried cleaning the screen with my acetylene torch I would think that's a little Overkill.
As always I enjoyed your video and look forward to the next one.

Hey! there is my favorite brand lol, love the FS56R had the curved shaft as my first piece of stihl equipment, solid trimmer and runs so nice. Honestly id probobly just toss the screen if it gets clogged on my equipment just easier, although I havent had it happen on the equipment I use commercially. I had one stihl handheld blower have a screen get clogged up but it had a manual choke on it so I would quite often forget to unchoke it and it would run rich a bunch of the time.

I already have a propane torch which I have used to Clean them with before to get them running right.
I have seen someone on here use nothing but carburetor cleaner & a wire brush to clean them as well.
I wouldn't remove the spark arrestor screen particularly in my area in Australia particularly in very hot & dry weather where people have lost their homes due to a spark igniting a fire & burning the scrub off.
It's similar to the problem that California is having in the U.S. where there's constanty fires every summer & people lose their houses due to that !

Usually I use a wire brush and a paper towel to clean any carbon, it doesn't work as well as a torch but I don't have one and I don't want to take the time to light a fire to clean it. That method works well enough for me. The paper towel does tear and leave remnants easily, so i do have to be careful.

My 2 stroke snowblower doesn’t have a spark arrestor since it is hard to start a fire in winter. It would clog up pretty quickly if it did have one due to how much oil the thing burns. I have to run the thing on a really rich mixture to keep the thing in good condition. I have had to get rid of the carbon on the plug because of it though

Mine is a troy-bilt and the spark arrestor is built into the muffler, so I soaked it in degreaser, and flushed it through with the hose and the airline and let it dry; the propane torch method would work as well it just means heating the area where the arrestor is located, the arrestor is visible you just can't remove it like on the Stihl.

wow that's one very stubborn trimmer. Because of the backfire, it tells me that the carb is flooding the engine while in use. Is it stopping and backfiring only while using it on the grass, or will it do it while it's just idle too? IF so the carb might just need an adjustment

I would shy away from using Stihl mix oil unless you keep it wide open 80% of the time. I’ve had great luck with Echo Red Armor even at a 40:1 ratio. I’m doing an experiment with Amsoil on a cheap blower and getting good results at the recommended 100:1 ratio which is something I never would have expected. I tried it at 50:1 and it was just too much oil residue. I have ran this thing in a shed that was 110 degrees tank after tank and I can’t kill it at 100:1 with Amsoil. Don’t think I would try it with a chainsaw even though people do with good results.

Stihl is a nice brand, but I defiantly think the fuel they want u to use on their. Equipment is very expensive. I also think their trimmers are a little heavy. I had a strap top tp put it around my shoulder but man, it was just not a good feeling. Now people say the fs94 r trimmer by Stihl is the best and mightier of them, i have not yet tested it. Now my question. What is one piece of equipment you dream of fixing, is their any specific avchine you want to bring on the channel top show the people hw to fix. Any brands. Also for Engines in general for lane equipment, what brand do you like, Briggs, tecumseh, Kohler.

I completely agree with you, they are vey heavy. I would love to work on a Honda 3000 inverter generator some day.
