Making a Console Staircase - Pt1 steel

- No more ladders :) turn CC on for subtitles! We assembled the steel staircase which will be covered in wood when most of the interior work will be done. I made the stairs almost half a year ago when we were only starting with the house build but didn't install it because it would get in the way when moving the scaffolding and during the concrete pours of the upper floor. It waited on the construction site so it got a bit of rust here and there, but now when all that rough work is completed, we could finally assemble it. Each stair is made from 60x60x4 square tubes welded on 15x25cm 12mm thick steel plate. To connect the stairs to the concrete wall, we used 16mm threaded rods anchored with vinyl ester resin.
I hope you like this this project! Please ask any question in the comments and as always, subscribe for more!:D

Greetings from Baldock in England, firstly as a construction man of 53 years, I am so impressed with your videos from first cuttings the foundations to currant status. A truly great journey in constructing this amazing house, together with attention to detail and coordination. Looking forward to the next videos and ultimately the finished article, in particular the external landscaping and boundry fencing. Best Regards Valentine Shanley
I’m glad you were finally able to get the stairs up. Going from ladders to stairs must feel like a definite milestone and turning point. I hope spring doesn’t rain you out too much. Thanks for sharing this with us.
Yes I hope so too but the long term weather forecast is not so promising.. At least we can start on the interior. Now the visitors are not afraid to go up! Thank you for watching!:)

@@lignumchannel why you didnt use concrete anker? Why using silicon or whatever is it in hole ?
Who click on this video after see thumbnail
You're goddamn right I did!
🙋♂️ GUILTY
i sure didn't click before 😂😂
This is very similar to how I have built a floating metal stair case. Excellent work and I'm sure the final product will come out well.
Inspiring work!! nearly 18 months after video is released, how the stair frame is holding? anything that you would have down differently? thanks
Wow I have never done construction before its not even close to my field. But i just sat through 11 videos "Building Your Home" plus this one and i can tell you i am fascinated by your work, excited to begin my journey and tired like hell lol because i felt as if I was working alongside you guys lol. This is some great work and although in the Caribbean we dont do as much when building our houses, it still taught me a lot. I will definitely be watching more of your videos. Thank you
Thing looks looks like a dang ol' death trap
I’m loving all these thumbnails to entice us in 🤣🤣🤣
I always feel so happy inside when your vids are uploaded. Always fun to watch.
Thank you so much Robert! :)
Cool realization, as always. My wife wanted to have this kind of stairs. But no rails and childrens it is very bad idea. I am waiting to see next steps. Great house.
Pt1 steel
im sure it will have railings it would never pass inspection like that.
Thank you! Yeah this is just the first step, the wood will come last after all the interior work so it doesn't get damaged. I'm also thinking about installing two thin steel pipes up to the ceiling on each step so nothing can get trough and stairs will keep the floating look, still thinking about it though..
@@vallevaan BS!
@@lignumchannel floating look is just hilarious and worth to have it. To be honest I cannot wait untill you release next episode.
As a once young architect I once dreamed of being able to design floating stairs. After spending decades as designer/builder for young families, families with seniors, renovations when we had to haul heavy stuff up and down stairways, etc., I accept that I have to content myself to admiring other designers' projects such as this. 🙂

mesmerising, just breathless cirurgic artesanal job
Wow! Dramatic staircase! And a very pretty cat in your workshop.
Thank you! 😊
I like how heavy-duty you build everything.
I’m impressed you were able to drill all those holes precisely enough. The drill plate must’ve helped a lot. I hate trying to get holes precise on concrete surfaces. Nice work!
start the holes slow at like 20% power and allow the bit to collar, then let it rip
@@Keechization the bit always walks for me.
Using a centre punch on the wall also works quite well, and also drilling with a smaller drill first a small pilot hole first, then go for the actual diameter :-)
@Rick Thank you! Most of them turned out great but few were a few mm off due to rebar. I adjusted those holes with heavy duty biax tool.
@@lignumchannel Too bad you couldn't bring the robot arm in to drill the holes!
Wonderful workmanship and design, keep going. Kindly upload Part 2.
Que belleza de trabajo. Verdadera ingeniería convertida en arte. Saludos desde Costa Rica!!! Excelente trabajo.
peligroso diseño. Mi pie (adulto) o la de un pequeño podría trabarse en medio de cada escalón....
Magnífico trabalho, com perfeição e um ótimo designer. Viva
but it is very dangerous!
Одно удовольствие смотреть как вы работаете. И музыка шикарная.
Excellent job! Those floating stairs really go with the style of the house. Can not wait to see the next part.
Glad you like them! :)
Beautiful! Steel & Concrete go very well together.

Dobar Projekt 👍Pozdrav od Makedonija 🇲🇰
Super cool stairs and video. Only Lignum would build a jig out of a 12x12 beam, not like all these other hacks using plywood and mdf!
First thing that I found laying around the corner ;) Glad you like the video! Thank you! :)
Always impressed with your work. This house is on another level. Looking forward to the next vid.
Thank you very much! :)
Overall, this is a highly informative and enjoyable video for anyone interested in engineering. It showcases your talent and expertise while providing valuable insights and inspiration to fellow enthusiasts. Keep up the great work, and I look forward to watching more of your content in the future 👍👍👍
Did you consider doing them in concrete tied into the wall? I had similar floating stairs done with concrete and with solid timber treads. The concrete treads where actually tapered from outside edge to wall (thicker at wall connection and had nice curved edges).
Wow, what a fascinating concept! Building a console staircase sounds like a creative and practical solution for optimizing space while adding a unique touch to any home. Exploring the Buildovate CRM could greatly assist in overseeing construction projects similar to this one!
Выглядит добротно. Молодцы!
The things you come up,like to pick your brain on thing's. That is some cool stair's,i bet the tops of them will look cool. Waiting patiently for part 2 ...have a great week..
Not quite sure how I will finish them but there is plenty of time until then.. They come last after all the interior will be done. Thank you Robert, Have a great week also! :)
Beautiful design and excellent craftmanship
Thank you very much!

Bravo , lepo narejeno in lepa predstavitev poteka dela . Bravo mojster !!
Love the choice of music, so glad you didn't put that depressing rock music everyone seems to do when it comes renovating/construction.
I am also making a cantilever staircase in Korea. Thank you for the great video.
this is just wow.. excellent job.
no handrails violates every building code known to man. 😂
Music and work, so beautiful!
Many thanks!
I can't wait to see how you are planning to hide those bolts that sticking out 😎
I have a plan😉
one simple way would be having nuts with caps. After cutting the threaded rod, the unscrewing action of the existing nut would reform back the threads. Then screw the nuts with the caps.
Good work! Congratulations.
What do you think about using thread locker on the bolts?
Que método interessante. Parabéns pelo belo resultado.
Very nicely made. Looks great
Thanks a lot 😊
First! Such incredible work as always! Wood worker, CNC robot coder, house builder and amazing metal worker, what can't you do? Keep it up man!
congratulations :) The fastest finger! Thank you very much, and I'l do my best.
Awesome! A simphony of everything!
Thank you very much! :)
I hate to sound pretentious, but unless you actually have experience working on similar work as this, it’s hard for people to really appreciate what you’re doing here. With the amount of skill, precision and most of all the thought that you’re putting into each of the elements on this house. It really is cool to watch when you know that this stuff is not nearly as simple as it looks.
Outstanding project!
🤜🤛
I felt betrayed.
Customer: I want to break both of my legs.
Designer: say no more.
You do realize that this is just a steel core and not the finished staircase right..
@@lignumchannel ok. waiting to see the finished view
Nice work as always, but the bars holding the landing are way too much near the edge. For an M8 with transversal load minimum distance is 50 mm. Hope for you it will have no problems 😁
Hola Genial el trabajo , queria saber si me podias pasar los planos de los aceros de cada paso de la escalera :)
Did you have to re-tap the threaded rods after cutting them with the angle grinder? I would think so. Maybe you know a trick you can teach me?
Loved this vid about your steel stairs. You all have such excellent content. A real pleasure watching you work your magic. Is there a part 2 for these stairs? Is this in your house build for which you have 12 episodes?
Yes, it’s in there house.
I’m also waiting for the woodworking part
Very nice👍. What did you do between the consoles and the wall?
Mettre du scellement avant fixer les marches pour que ça plaque bien, très bonne idée !
the cat is watching you welding, you need to buy her protective glasses!
They are not nearly completed, this is just the first part..
Love the classical music more videos should be made with such music
Love the staircase❤
Love the classical music on your videos.
Glad you like it! Thank you Dave :)
You really stepped it up on this one. Great work! Clearly you are taking this build to new heights. Looking forward to part 2!
Thanks a ton! :)
Stepping up your pun game.
Nice work guys, a wonderful staircase skeleton.
Anyway, really you never found rebar in concrete wall? You are very lucky because I remember there is a lot of rebar in that wall 😅
Thanks for share and see you next
I did but it didn't deflect the drill bit too much. I was fortunate that distance in between each step is almost the same as double distance on the rebar mesh, steps are cca30cm apart and mesh was 15x15cm. so if I missed it on the first step, I was quite sure I wont hit any at all.. I hit a couple on the horizontal direction though.. Thank you for watching! :)
Very nice house sir! Does the wall that you made the staircase on have a specific role? Because it is made out of concrete and i can only think it's an antiseimic wall on your load-bearing structure.
You are exactly right. We are in a quite active seismic region and a percentage of walls in each direction have to be from reinforced concrete. Glad you like it! Thank you😁
Gorgeous!
Thank you! 😊
놀랍네요. 능력자이십니다.
Did all the stairs turn out to be the same height? Or did you make the holes bigger in the stairs, so you had some wiggle room, and aligned them to a sign on the wall?
I got them precise +- 1-2mm , this is plenty for final tuning with the wood cover. I drew position of each step on the wall but still managed to hit some rebar. I adjusted those holes with heavy duty biax tool.
Idk about leaving it open... but looks cool.
Would it have been easier to put the books in the wall at the time of the pour?
Cool, and I’m positive it is sturdy, but I would still not be able to walk up them .
glad you like it! :)They will be much safer when they get finished.
Чудесная музыка Вивальди и красивая попка! Лестница кстати тоже ничего получилась😊
Amazing! Can you say how much the material cost please? ☺️
Looks super safe and not dangerous at all
Yeah, It also looks like it is not yet completed and this is only just the base.
What did it look like when you finished the trim?
Your going to have some awesome wall space and the volume 💰, there is a guy has a channel called the nito project that does some interesting wall finishes "organic" , but with your robotics and design skill I am sure you will have a treat in store for everyone. I could see some cool geometric plywood panel treatments or maybe a homage to your luthier skills .
Glad you like it! That concrete wall bill be covered in steel panels of various heights to give it a mosaic look. the stairs will be wooden with steel pipes as guard going up to the ceiling. I thought about wood cover for the wall but there is enough of it already with the beams and the ceiling so wood will come on the kitchen side. I'm thinking of some pattern like I did the guitar case if you looked that video, but on the whole wall. Hope it wont be too much and overwhelming.
The stairs to heaven I see.
is that a standard method for fixing such a staircase ? I wouldn't have thought gluing threaded rod into the wall would be sufficient over time. surely having the rod go all the way through the wall to a backing plate on the other side would give a much stronger hold.
I would never trust this.
Very good technical work
7:08 those anchors are pretty grouped up and the top ones are close to the edge of the concrete, aren't you concerned its gonna crack eventually
Yeah, top ones are definitely going to push up, it could easily split the concrete and break.
normaly we use fixbolt or fisher or akmon bolt some thing like that but what you used
instead of that ?
THANK YOU FORM INSIPIRATION IM FROOM INDONESIA IM GLAD YOUR VIDEOS IM very happy🎉🎉
Последний болт в керамоблок, это как ложка дегтя в бочке меда) Мне интересно, если ума не хватило рассчитать высоту верхней площадки, так нельзя было ухо длинней сделать?
My favorite part was the very brief cameo at the end.
Beautiful job💪
Looks great!
Thank you very much Ellie! :)
Amazing bro, amazing, congratulation 👍👍👍👍👍
What an elegant staircase! Did you calcute the needed steel thickness (if yes: how?) or did you go by feel/experience?
I guess these stairs would hold up tons.
The bolts look like M20, glued in, the square tube could be 100x100x4.. and there are two of them..
tons!
I got the minimum tubes and anchors in the main project from certified civil engineering office when I was applying for a building permit. Calculated were 50x50x4 welded to 10mm plate and m14 anchors. I used 60x60x4 welded to 12 mm plate and m16 anchors. Just to sleep tight.
@@lignumchannel overbuilding ftw. few $ upfront=longevity without a worry.
If anything that's way, way overbuilt.
@@RubyRhod at 5:52, you can see it's wrench 24 - so M16.
if you had used enough leveling mortar, it wouldn't have been necessary to insert compensating wedges. Is this true?
Very cool. When's the railing?
This is just the first part of the staircase build, I have to finish the cover on the wall and most of the interior before they get completed.
Nice work lingam
Brad is insane!!!
How will you then plaster and level the walls if you have already installed steps?
Who says plaster goes on that wall?😉
