Pretty short OSFirstTimer episode today, DWMBlurGlass was too short for a single episode so I teamed it up with RetroBar and it was still short :P The next episode (ChatGPT Advanced Voice Mode) will be a long one ;)
I've been playing around with DWMBlur recently, so it's a great coincidence you've uploaded a video on it! Really enjoying having you both back so often!
im having a pretty terrible day so thank you for uploading, and it being a video about a program im a big fan of too (retrobar). makes me feel a lil better
Great video!! Really liked these two programs, especially the RetroBar one since I've always preferred the taskbar from older Windows OS's to more modern ones like Windows 10 and 11, thanks for sharing these!

Windhawk: Advanced tweaking and customization of the system and applications without having to change files. It offers very useful mods created and improved by the community. PS: All these 3 programs you mention have a little bit of me in them, funny that I found them here!
I love DWMBlurGlass! Windows 10 theming has gotten really good the past couple years and thanks to DWMBG, a theme, and some other tweaks it’s easier than ever to get an almost perfect version of Windows 10 21h2 that looks like Windows 7
Yep, found Classic Shell while I was editing this video. Something like Windows Blinds was in the days of Windows XP is what I was thinking of during filming the video.
its unfortunate microsoft seems to be making it only harder to customize windows... 24h2 saw the 10 taskbar code be removed so explorerpatcher however what if i told you its still possible to run the windows 10 taskbar on windows 11 24h2 but they simply just deleted the code from the existing explorer.exe file..?
I have spent hours to try to do this on Windows 10 years ago. also have been enjoying the constant burst of OSFT content, been with you all since around 2015
One thing I want to mention about DWMBlurGlass to anyone who might want to use it, is that the blur only starts after the window animation has finished. So when the window is still popping up, it has that completely transparent, zero blur look, the same one as when Diana put the blur radius all the way down. So that may drive you nuts if you plan on using it if you're anything like me.
@@ThatRandomToast Looks really ugly, try it for yourself. Windows 7 and Vista have that nice animation, this doesn't. Cool program regardless but it ruins it for me.
I don't care about that brief animation. However, if it bothers you that much, you can either disable all Windows animations or try OpenGlass, which is an updated remake of DWMBG with fewer bugs and better performance. Unforunately, it has no GUI; you have to make and edit registry keys for the customisation, which is why I don't use it.
There are programs like StartAllBack that let you change the start menu! It's definitely not perfect and doesn't exactly replicate the old style rather tries to make it more customizable, but I thought it'd be worth mentioning!
To expand on this, you guys should look at some of the community made Windows 10 to 7 transformation packs or something similar, they really have come an EXTREMELY long way since they first came out. Awesome video!
3:00 aww no, Phil! That preset recreates Windows 7’s EXACT Aero effects, which are actually different from Vista’s. Windows Vista has a two layers: a generic blur layer and solid colour layer (whose opacity you modify). Nothing special. Windows 7 uses a multiply blend effect combined with the three effects you saw as sliders in the program. You could modify these effects in 7 too, but you needed an extra program to do so. These effects allow for wacky results when you change them! It’s a shame you didn’t explore more of the program. I was waiting to see some laughs from Diana at some of the looks you could have played with.
DWMBlurGlass is an amazing program. I'm using it right now and it makes Windows 11 way more beautiful. PS - You can use it to make Google Chrome title bars transparent too.
6:17 well phil, there is a third program. you could use classic shell and just get rid of all of the taskbar modifications. and then set the task menu to whatever you want and you can also install themes online!
I've seen a video about a program called "Start Menu Styler", which allows users to customize the Windows 11 start menu (adding the app list to the first page, etc). Perhaps you can let her take a look at it, if you show her other customization software for Windows
Can't wait to watch this, also when is the next osft archive series episode coming out? Or is it cancelled? I've watched it at least like 6 times over, I find it really entertaining and I'm just sad there hasn't been any new episodes in forever.
Yeah, I'm so sorry about that. I need to focus on content that is more relevant to a wider audience :( But don't worry, plenty of fun OSFirstTimer videos are on the way :)
10 minute video? Quite rare on OSFirstTimer but honestly i prefer it in a way due to it being more easy to watch in one sitting because usually half way through i gotta take a break to do something.
As much as Aero is nostalgic, I cannot for the life of me let myself customise Windows 😭I use computers in a whole variety of spots (i.e school uses Windows 10) and I get used to them all looking and functioning the same. That's why I have the Windows 11 taskbar to the left. A good tip as that third program for the start menu is OpenShell, but that doesn't have the start menu exactly like the one from previous operating systems.
I love the Win7 aero effect! We desperately need to go back to classic designs in general. We need color and vibrance. Everything has this depressing and boring look to it nowadays. Not just computers either, ever go into Mcdonald's recently and notice how much it looks like a prison?
hey osfirsttimer, i tried to use dwmblurglass (i downloaded it from github), i clicked install and it doesnt do the blur effect, please help me! (im on windows 11 home 23h2, dark mode)
I tried uninstalling this because I wanted to revert for a bit and I had thought I had deleted it but there is still a winblur folder in my C: part of the computer that by the looks of it, still has the program in it but it doesn't open. And also when I try to delete all the contents, it says it can't be deleted because it's open in another folder or another program. How do I completely delete this?
Even with a good PC you'll notice VMs are slower than the virtual specs you set.
