Astral Weeks is a monster of a record. Cyprus Avenue, Ballerina, and Madame George are great.
It is perhaps the greatest debut of a singer songwriter in the history of recorded music. Astral Weeks out of the gate??????❤❤❤
Thank you for reacting to this song! (Nobody ever reacts to it)
This whole piece feels like an intro section that never releases the snare drum and groove into the rest of the song. It creates the tension and longing that he feels while he waits to see his lost love again, in Heaven.
A work of art
Astral Weeks is a move away from the blues and into the more folk music, which was a big part of Rock often overlooked. My favorite by Van.
Van used jazz musicians to back him on this album, recorded in New York. This included veterans like Richard Davis on upright bass, Connie Kay on drums, and Jay Berliner on acoustic guitar. Although Van's original instrument was saxophone, he was not a huge jazz fan (loved r&b and soul music). It was producer Lewis Merenstein who suggested using a jazz combo to support Van's compositions.
I love the relationship you have with music.
Van the Man
Just incredible music every time from Van Morrison. Yes to checking out his early work with Them.
The greatest of all time 🍀
Van Morrison has some amazing music. The album Astral Weeks is a song cycle you can put it on repeat and listen to it all day, and it never gets old. Then there was Moondance, Tupelo Honey, Wavelength, so many great songs over the years, and he's still around.
He does have a huge catalog of great music
I fell in love with this album in the late 70's when I was becoming a teen. Went on a trip to France and Belgium in 1982 when I was 15, had this on my Walkman as we drove through the countryside.
Van was the frontman for his former Northern Irish rock band 'THEM'. Their international smash hit single "Gloria" released back in 1964 was smokin' hot for that time period. Several well-know recording artists covered "Gloria" over the decades. 'THEM' were included among many British bands/artists that flooded the U.S. with their slew of chart-topping records that received plenty of airplay on radio stations around the nation.📻🎤🎸🎷🎹🥁🔥🎧
Thanks for the VAN, Biz
Tupelo Honey, Wild Night, Into the Mystic, and Days Like This
Love that last lyric
With your champagne eyes and saint like smile
Yeah man, one of my all time favs !
Van didn't mess around in those days!
Van is a miracle of God for what he brought us.
This is one one o my favorite albums of all time. Anything on Astral Weeks is worth listening to.
P.S. You get it dude. He uplifts the soul. The canvasses he paints are so deep and rich. This album is heaven on earth. And the story of its making is fantastic. Those jazz studio cats didn’t understand what Van was trying to do. Watch it!!!❤❤❤
Astral Weeks, a fantastic album. This song is magical. The stand up bass.....wow.
Nice choice! Biz, you might consider adding buy me a coffee option so peeps can make a request and show some Renmen
Love this. You have covered many of his most popular songs, how about checking out Van with his first band - Them. Really rocking early 60's band. "Gloria" 1964, "Here comes the night" 1965, "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" 1966.
I just played The Waterboy's version 15 minutes ago. love it.❤❤❤❤
Great one. Thanks for sharing!
Love
Wow. Haven't heard this in a while. Beautiful song from Van.
Thank you!
Dweller On The Threshold, give it a listen, you’ll see!
Astral Weeks is a great album, total chill out album from start to finish. Check out "The Way Young Lovers Do" from the second side for some triple meter action. Also check out "T.B. Sheets" from his debut solo album and "Glad Tidings" from his Moondance album for an idea of what became of the sound of "Brown Eyed Girl".
Astral Weeks or Madam George. trust....
Van the Man!!
Always good
Very nice, hi Biz
If you like that Biz try Cypress Avenue. Similar vibe but longer. Maybe Van's greatest track.
Van Morrison is one those singers whose voice seamlessly complements the instrumental. Who is backing who? Another example, for me is Robert Plant with Zeppelin.
TB Sheets also a great song
I think that was a flute
This beautiful album sounds like nothing else. Only Van Morrison would have the balls to make it, and the amazing thing is that it’s really his first self-realized solo album, the songs he wanted, all written by him, arranged and recorded the way he wanted, in the order he wanted. He was 22 years old! There were famous session musicians playing, and jazz-style he gave them the basic structure and chord changes and when they asked what they should play, Van told them “Play what you want.” This has a hard, circular rhythm. The song before this, “Beside You”, has no rhythm at all. It could be on Miles Davis’ ‘Kind Of Blue’, with Van’s voice playing the part of Miles’ trumpet, words more important for their sounds than their meanings.
Biz, Tom MacDonald's last two songs released have to be reacted to.!The Machine and God Mode. You will love them.
"Brown eyed 👀 girl 👧 ", surely you've already done ✔️ it, "Bright side of the Road", the list of songs 🎵 is virtually endless
Anything off this album will work....seriously. try cyprus avenue or astral.weeks.
A flute
Mentally, this song makes me skip like a little kid. It's light. Even when I try to play it, I have a tenor (no bass strings) guitar. This is my favorite song to try on it.
