"Caravan" is a song that has been a part of my life since I first heard it shortly after the album came out. My brother Philip turned me on to his music. Van still performs and puts out records. Finally got to see him perform in 2020, before the lockdown. Fantastic concert...fantastic band he had put together too!
Longtime Van Morrison fan, this is iconic for so many reason, first of all so uncharacteristic of him to be so open, he was notoriously shy on stage. I am sure alcohol was involved! The Band ... their expressions, they could be wtheck emojis! and of course the jumpsuit! lol The Band was always perfect. Their playing was impeccable and versatile and fun. My favorite of favorites Van Morrison songs is Someone Like You.
Here is some intel for you. Van the Man grew up a very poor kid in Northern Ireland and he used to run home everyday so he could listen to the radio that had American military channel. His idol in his youth, the one he dreamed of being like? Ray Charles. He made it too. He has become an epic singer and at that Last Waltz concert he was living just north of the Golden Gate Bridge, in Marin County. That is why it was so easy for him to participate in that legendary concert. From a dirt poor kid in Northern Ireland to a pop star in America and beyond. Thank You Ray Charles.
This takes me back to Wednesday nights when all the girls would come to my house to Prep for a night out. I had a great bong called the Chimney and a very nice bar if I do say so myself. If I didn't have it, there was a tavern right across the street who took very good care of me. Van Morrison was always perfect to get you in the mood.
I love ❤ this song. Reminds me of my beautiful friend ❤ Gretel, who passed away 30 years ago. She loved Van Morrison. Especially this song. Thank you for this. Vale Sweet Friend xxx
Van was so incredibly drunk during this he got a case of stage fright. One of the stage handlers had to shove him out on stage. Then he nails this legendary live performance. You can see how utterly amused Robbie Robertson is when Van devolves into the leg kicks. Lol
Van The Man blasting Caravan at The Last Waltz is always an amazing reminder of his talent, "Caravan" is a song full of gypsies, travel, and community. It's a song about the open road and music, a general celebration of freedom. Van always has a message in all his songs. You should give his Album 'IT's TOO LATE TOO STOP NOW' a song-by-song listen. It's one of the great Live Albums that captures Van at his best.,
It doesn't get much better than seeing and hearing Van the Man backed by the Band, one of the greatest groups of all time. Van is a superstar. I had front row for Van about two years before The Last Waltz concert, Capitol Theater in NJ. Can this guy sing or what! Other favorites from Van are "Jackie Wilson Said", "Saint Dominic's Preview", "Wild Night", "Moondance." Van had a couple of rock hits in the mid '60s with his band, Them. Those are "Gloria", and "Here Comes the Night."
@@CarolynStewart-v5q I'm originally from a small town in Bergen County called New Milford. I don't know if you're familiar with it, and I lived in Hackensack for many years as well. I loved that drive to the Capitol several times a month back in the '70s to see some of the greatest bands ever. I also used to make it a point to stop off at the Passaic Book Center to buy back issues of comic books and magazines back in the day. Thanks for the reply!
"The Last Waltz" is a brilliant film, start to finish. Not just the performances, but there's a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff which is fascinating. Well worth watching.`Have you reacted to Joni Mitchell's "Coyote" from it yet? It's a must see.
Do the whole doc...Scorsese's "The Last Waltz".... kind of defined the genre...RockDoc... It's especially one-of-a-kind as it was The Band's official 'sign-off, on Thanksgiving, no less. Big meal, then an All-Star, Heavy Hitter line-up. You probably know all this a thousand times over...but no reactors that I see have done this. It's historic in music history terms...and no one has ever had a more graceful, unique, classy exit. Your fam would LOVE it.
I have listen to the music of Van Morrison since Sept '69, first listen of Astral Weeks. I have purchased all his studio releases. If you wanted to measure my favourite on number of plays it would be Caravan.
Van is probably my fav musically. Listened to the original of this song on my walks for decades and it always put a spring in my step. My son would’ve been born to the original if he’d been born a minute earlier! Yeah I made mixed tapes for my delivery! Hahaha. Also at 49 I married my second husband in my backyard. I walked down to Vans “Someone Liike You” which fit us perfectly. My dog even decided to walk me down. And our first song was Van’s “Have I Told You Lately” (most people know the Rod Stewart remake). Love Van. And absolutely love this version. The Last Waltz is a great concert film!!❤
Van Morrison is 🔥He's actually from Belfast, north Ireland-- "The Belfast Cowboy" of "Van The Man" Morrison is not for the faint-hearted he has effortlessly slipped between genres during his half-century career. And he certainly is one of my favorites. Here's another one of his songs "Van Morrison - Tupelo Honey" Loved seeing "The Band" again too.
Van was a very prickly person. But he was so turned on singing Caravan here. This will always remind of how my then husband and I watched one of our favorite singers sang this in a mesmerizing way. I will always love Van no matter what! Van's got so much soul!
The Band in the studio: "Chest Fever." More from the Last Waltz: "Ophelia," "Stage Fright," "The Shape I'm In," and "Coyote," the last of which will kick you down the Joni Mitchell rabbit hole. More Van Morrison: "Jackie Wilson Said" will have you dancing in your seat.
The Band stayed on stage with the performers and played the various artists songs for them. They are very versatile musicians and as you said "they can play!" If you watch the movie the last waltz, the 1st song in the movie is actually the final song they did at the concert. After a long jam with all the artists that were there at the end, they said goodnight and went back stage, changed clothes and were pretty wiped. 20 minutes later the concert promoter went back k stage and said" nobody has left, you have to do another song". That is why in the 1st song in the movie they looked beat, but still did a good rendition. 1st class act.
Van Morrison is one of the hardest working musicians on earth, there is hardly to find a musician who has released so many LPs like he does. On this album `caravan` is great but my favorite is `the weight` too ! You've already presented that, but I can't decide on another one because they're all very good. Thanks again for sharing and best regards @all from Hamburg (Germany) ps: you should definitely watch the movie ;-))
The great British singer/songwriter Van Morrison. He began his career way back in 1965 with his first Band called "Them." He had a hit, with a little song called "Gloria." Such a truly great artist.
'Van The Man' from Northern Ireland. I grew up knowing an old Van, when I first seen this I was blown away. Did you know Martin Scorsese directed The Last Waltz? I recommend 'Someone Like You' as your next Van trip.
Terrific reaction. This performance from this legendary concert is wonderful, but I like the one from his "It's Too Late to Stop Now" concert is even better. That was with is band The Caledonia Orchestra, including a string section, and it'll blow you away.
Be sure to listen to it and every other song on his Moondance album. It will change you forever! He is the quintessential musician, lyricist and poet! The greatest of all! ☘️💚☘️
thank you sir you and I are united in our love of Van's music and this mvie I would recommend that you enjoy the other song that Van does in this move, called Irish lullabye
Yeah, cantankerous is one way to put it. Some have called him other things. LOL. He's unique. He can never be corralled. His own man. And I LOVE VAN the MAN.
The Last Waltz is a fabulous show, great album and a full length movie. Caravan is one of my favourite Van Morrison songs. Van is really hands on in in his arrangements but he had to consult with Robbie Robertson and Levon Helm who were also hands on in the arrangement of this. It's a bit hurried IMHO. If you want to hear a more Van like arrangement live, check out the 11 minute version of Caravan on It's too Late to Stop Now.
Don't know if this is true. But I've heard that Van hadn't (for different reasons) done a live performance for quite some time and was reluctant/nervous and they more or less had to persuade him. If this is true. Go out and do this??? And the mic-drop and the rest of the guys. ''Where the h*ll did he go?''. I've always loved him. Thanks for this. Made my day.
One of "Van the Man" best performances. It's soul . It got soul!! Although he lately fall into does idiotic anti-vaxxer conspiracy theories no one can forget the true 70's Morrison, and just for that how can we not forgive him when he gave us Astral Weeks, Veedon Fleece, Saint Dominic's Preview, Moondance, Tupelo Honey...Truly love this guy definitely one of the best male voices/composers from the past 50 years!
Watching the entire movie .. #TheLastWaltz .. is a must. Not a bad song performed by any of the invited guests. Other songs from the movie to react to are ... #Who Do You Love with Ronnie 'The Hawk' Hawkins .. #Coyote with Joni Mitchel .. #Dry Your Eyes with Neil Diamond .. #Ophelia/#Stage Fright with The Band .. #Train Train with Paul Butterfield .. #Helpless with Neil Young and #Forever Young/Baby/#Let Me Follow You Down with Bob Dylan.
My favorite performance from The Last Waltz. The smiles on Levon and the boys faces says it all.
Such a unique voice. Great musical attitude. Just a very special talent!!!
That whole movie is fire. Dr. John, Neil Young, Joni Mitchel, Clapton, Dylan, Muddy Waters all do great numbers.
One of the coolest stage exits EVER!

GREAT PERFORMANCE BY THE ONE AND ONLY VAN THE MAN!
That’s about the pinnacle of live performance by anyone! Magic.
One of... there have been plenty honestly, even on this concert celebration alone.
@@MitchClement-il6iq Fine.

And still making at least one album every year in 2023 !!!
Turn it up Biz!
Love Van! Tupelo Honey is my favorite. Wild Night is another great one! ☮️❤️😎
