Elden Ring - He used to be somebody

- This is far from the only big shakeup with the plans for the Crucible Knights, but this one feels especially unfortunate, because it sort of undercut some of the buildup from showcasing the image of Tanith and her knight.
Song used: Subterranean Graveyard - King's Field IV OST
The network test has one of the Crucible Knights named as Floh, whose name was also stolen for Bloodhound Knight Floh. Considering then there's also Bloodhound Knight Darriwil, whose name fits the same naming scheme as Ordovis, Siluria, and Floh, we might technically know four of the names of the Crucible Knights. Who knows what name would have been for which knight though, the Crucible Knights are all over the place.
Interesting but it's weird that they didn't name the rest of these knights as they're special and probably would've have some quests or something lore behind them but maybe it was scrapped because of time? Like there's spots some of them are placed in which are interesting to me like the one in the storm veil castle or the one underground you use to teleport to.
To elaborate, they're all named after geological periods. Ordovis and Siluria are named after the Ordovician and the Silurian, and it turns out two of the Ordovician's substages are called Floian and Darriwillian.
@@Dinoman972 holy moly
The Crucible Knights are very cool.
It's a pity we never encountered one of them who would just talk to us.
uhm, ordovicium and silur are earth ages (the crucible knights might be named after them) so they might all be named after an earth age ot there might have been 1 created every age
I feel like Volcano Manor is the biggest what-if to me in Elden Ring. The way Tanith talks about everything, and Rykard as a whole, always made it feel like they were going to have a unique ending to them as a whole. I was a bit bummed when I found out it was more or less just the NPC summon quests and the Rykard fight, especially for an area as visually striking and haunting as Volcano Manor and the surrounding Mt. Gelmir.
Cut content has been restored in DLC before, so there's hoping!
Yeah it kind of feels like it missed out on a ton of content or it was cut. Volcano manor is so cool
On my blind playthrough I completely tried to avoid them because I thought they are their own faction with an own ending since they literally rise against the erdtree and I also though murdering for them has consequences. In NG+ I realize they neither have an ending nor is there any consequence for hunting your fellow tarnished. Very un-Fromsoft-like and a bit disappointing
I hope that in future DLC we we'll have Rykard restoration or origins. Is such a cool place and concept almost lost in the base game
100% agree. With the whole idea of the faction saying "To hell with the Greater Will and the Erdtree! We'll do it our own way! Might is right!", I totally thought they'd have their own path for the end of the game... Then all you do is kill a few NPCs, fight Rykard, and collapse the whole faction. They take it sitting down, too. Even though the Rykard fight is awesome, overall Volcano Manor's end falls flat. It felt like it was missing a lot of quest content.
We have names inspired by the Ordovician and Silurian geologic periods and some that are named after the ages in the Ordovician period (like Floh and Darriwil) so the rest of the crucible knights would likely be named after the ages in those periods. Ordovis and Seluria are the most prominent so I'm guessing the rest would be something like Hirnant, Katy, Sandby, Darriwil, Daping, Floh, Tremadoc, Rhudda, Aeron, Telych, Sheinwood, Homer, Gorsty and Ludford which makes a total of 16 names as the number of crucible knights.
That's pretty cool
@@FearTheRetroNPC That's what Zullie suggested, ie it was originally meant to be a Crucible Knight's name, but after From decided they'd only name the two, they gave Darriwil to a Bloodhound.
Underrated comment
I can't really remember, but "floh" was also the name of another bloodhound, or am I mixing something up here?
@@janebtar2167 It's the name of the spirit hound we get. But apparently Floh and Darriwil were going to be the names of some of the crucible knights before the final game changes.

I was looking for this comment, lol
@@gkovostis did you mean he said it's guggin' time and he gugged all over the floor and then died at the box office.
I am still sad how abruptly Tanis Questline involving this guy ended.
I wonder if there will ever be a use for the Dancer's Castanets
Yharmam stone vibes
Hopefully in a dlc if they don't add a use in the base game.
They do have a use now. As of patch 1.06, Patches will not spawn back in Murkwater Cave until you give the Castanets to Tanith (if alive). If Tanith is dead, Patches spawns in Murkwater Cave anyway, apparently.
I did this on a playthru on the week Patch 1.06 dropped. I spoke to Patches at Shaded Castle, got the Castanets, then warped to Murkwater. He was MIA. I warped to Tanith, spoke to her, but did not give her the Castanets. Went back to Murkwater, still no Patches. Back to Tanith. Gave her the Castanets. Back to Murkwater. Boss fog wall was up.
There is a another element that can prevent Patches from returning to Murkwater Cave- the trap chest that warps you to Mistwood. If you never opened that chest, then Patches won't relocate back to Murkwater after Shaded Castle UNTIL you've opened it. BUT, this was not the case regarding my experience with the Castanets post-Patch 1.06. Patches had no roadblocks preventing him for relocating back to Murkwater Cave. I checked the place out twice, and only after I gave the Castanets to Tanith did Patches relocate.
That's my conclusion, anyway.
@@kajus that's nice and all, but I wouldn't count that as a "use" for the item or a conclusion to Tanith's questline. I can't imagine that the intention for their existence was simply for her to go "oh I don't need these" and advance Patches' quest stage. There has to be something unfinished here.
I was also disappointed to see Patches’ ending that my friend completed to get the fiery hammer thing in the process.
Why they just toss my boy Patches away like that?! The lad had so much more fight in him!
Tanith's Knight felt a lot like a "Boba Fett" type character - where they look intimidating and are hyped up through promotional material and whatnot, but end up being a bit of a letdown in terms of what they actually do. Makes more sense that there was a whole questline involving him, especially given that it's pretty interesting how he "betrayed" the other Crucible Knights etc. I wonder why they cut so much quest content, given that almost all of it was complete.
You just wait, in forty years this guys gonna have his own TV series.
Boba Fett is nutty though only the books have done him justice imo
Yeah, I think they should have kept that one as Ordovis, even if there wasn’t a quest line. It would give a bit of flavor to the character at least.
It's quite baffling how much content was cut. The game is fantastic no doubt but some quests just feel unfinished and pieces of lore stuck in files and not in the actual game. Hope we get some dlc soon.
I think a more akin comparison would be Captain Phasma from the sequel trilogy. At least we got some cool Boba Fett shit later. These guys are probably never gonna get any good spotlight which is exactly what happened with Phasma.

I never thought of this but the Tanith knight might still be alive. A few of the Red invaders in the game have a real harder counterpart with which you can do battle. The Dungeater, Milicent's sisters, and Vyke are the ones I can remember off hand. I wonder if the Anastasia originally had a quest line since you fight her 3 times.
Not to mention Millicent herself.

I always found it interesting, while trying to optimize builds, that the incantation dropped by this guy is the only Erdtree incantation that deals fire damage. I feel that is somehow relevant to the aforementioned grudge which could have been sort of a retroactive shaming when the age shifted and fire wasn't kosher anymore. If I helped establish an entire order and they told me I'm blaspheming by existing, I'd probably dip too.
Also of note, whilst eld (as in elden) refers to being old in English, tracing the word etymologically through Norse or Saxon linguistics yields a reference to fire of all things. Lots to unpack.
I always thought the Crucible Knights locations were remnants of where they had been assigned during the Golden Order's peak, either as bodyguards for the godlings or watchers for the Golden Order in case they went against the Two Fingers, and that Tanith's knight was just Rykard's that he had asked to watch over her as his wife. But it makes more sense with that background that he just betrayed the other Knights/Golden Order to embrace the Volcano manors philosophy
The Crucible knights were before the Golden Order. They did end up serving Godfrey, but predate him. The Crucible is the divine force that reigned before the age of the Erdtree, and is what causes the Omen "curse." As far as I know, the misbegotten belong with it too. Once the Golden Order achieved dominance and Godfrey was shunned away, the Crucible Knights were either banished too or just ditched the order, due to what it did do the other peoples of the Crucible.
@@glorytoukraine5524 Yes I know that about the Crucible and the Knights, but as far as I knew there was very little information about what they were chosen to do/forced to do after the events of the War with the Dragons. As I said, it was just speculation
What just occurred to me is that those two knights were named after two Paleozoic eras: Ordovis after Ordovician and Silurnia after Silurian.

I mean isn't the Volcano Manor faction supposed to be kinda evil though? I mean look at the place and it's lord.
Some times I wonder if they originally planned for every Demi-god/Outer god faction to have their own ending but things had to be cut for time. Considering the number of endings we already have that wouldn’t seem too unlikely.
half the endings are basically a filter change and sky swap so they definitely were in a rush which is a shame
It isn't fallout new Vegas. I think The engine fromsoft utilizes and the way they do their games in general isn't meant to handle overlap stories, branching questlines, and complex questlines. The script can't read that many sequences happening, especially in such a huge and unique world. The fact they included multiple endings, and questlines to achieve them, already is pushing the limits.
@@riotguards they should've done more work on that though. That's pretty lame
One of my biggest criticism for Elden Ring is that many quest, locations and NPS, once you're finished with them, just leave you with this "that's it?"
And seeing how much stuff was apprently cut from the game, it now makes sense why that is.

Since there are only 16 of them. I kinda wish each Crucible Knight had a name. Maybe each could have had a little bit of lore and a couple extra crucible weapons. A mace or flail would have been a neat one. Or axe like a Godfrey’s.
They’re one of my favorite bosses and I wish there was more to them.
Gotta wonder if Ordovis' Greatsword was supposed to be a flail at some point.
... Between a double team of Crucible Knights after a chariot's grave fiesta and a 1v1 that can potentially be done after a few easy invasions and a gimmick boss, OG Crucible Knight equipment sounds waaaaaay more accessible.
If you use the shackles designed for Margit/Morgott and Mohg you don't need to do the entire dungeon to deal with the chariots. Just reach the opening to the downward ramp to the boss and use the shackle. It'll trigger the thing to move and you can walk forward enough to trigger it and destroy the chariots pretty much right away. Also they made the boss a bit more tolerable in a recent patch (1.04 or 1.05).
That is unless they patched it in 1.06 like the Leyndell skip.

With Patches' quest being expanded in an early patch, and how he initially seems to die upon giving you the castanets for Tanith, it seems like there was some bigger plan to lead into that confrontation that was never finished or was shifted as Ordovis' identity changed.
Especially with Siluria being in Deeproot Depths, I wonder if the two of them were intended to have both been linked to later game quests that were scrapped.

Depending on where we leave off after the inevitable DLC, I think Elden Ring could greatly benefit from the SOTFS treatment to reimplement cut content and finish stuff that went unfinished to meet the deadline. I doubt it'll happen but it would be cool if it did

I don't think a scholar of the first sin edition would be the best course since that HEAVILY altered many aspects from the base hame. ER getting a huge update in the style of no man's sky would be fine tho
@@gloriousporpoise9731 I mean i think SOTFS was all around an immense improvement over the base game, and with how many people have already played Elden ring to death and burnt out on it, I think heavily altering is a good course of action. @@pibbles_ oh yeah SOTFS was an improvement all around but messing with ERs enemy placement would seem odd at least on new characters
I always thought this crucible knight was oddly placed since he seems to be the only one living in blasphemy as opposed to the other knights who still preform their duties. I had always worked it out in my head that the original Ordovis was sworn to Rykard and or Tanith, but him being a betrayer makes a lot more sense, since even the knights sworn to Rykard rose against him after he was consumed.

As much as I enjoyed ER I feel that way about a good portion of the game. World wise they did a great job creating the Lands Between but imo they didn't do very well fleshing it out (outside of the usual item descriptions and whatnot). I hope they go back to a more focused style of game, or at the very least take this as a learning experience to better flesh out future open world games they may create.
@@Jeffmetal42 I wholeheartedly agree. The more deep dives into Elden Ring, the more some stages of this game feel rushed out. Maybe thats not the case, but there are several elements that seemed to have been hastily swapped around or placed back in, between the in game map differences between patches and certain questlines being given an ending after launch.
Then again, game development and the changes the occur during it are a hellish beast. Perhaps rearranging the pieces was in order to make all of this more coherent in the eyes of the developers. Sometimes you notice things don’t work after it’s already out.
It does feel like they wanted more time but it's really telling that even after cutting many pieces of content from the game it's still fucking amazing and launched with not many bugs on console at leats
Ordovia and Siluria also are names for Ordovician-Silurian extinction, one of the biggest extinctions of life in Earth's history.
I think that with them being Crucible Knights and sea often referrred as "crucible of life" + Crucible described in Elden Ring as this primordial force where everything was meshed with every other life form, there meant to be a clear parallel here.
In the cut dialogue of Guilbert, he says he is off to Stormveil castle right after congratulating you for defeating Ordovis. Progression wise, the only Crucible Knight you are meant to fight before Stormveil is the one in the Evergaol, could Ordovis have been placed there previously? Since first of the recycled bosses you fight are often significant (Darriwil who was in some way connected to Ranni or Rennala, Leonine Misbegotten who led the uprising in Castle Morne and stole a legendary artefact, Agheel who has a lake named after him etc.) I think it’s possible that the first Crucible Knight you fight was also planned to be more than a nameless enemy with no unique lore.
It's possible, but it should be noted that dialogue isn't always necessarily in progression order in the files.
