- Let's try this again. Today we explore the Crucible Knights. In celebration of our 50th episode of Elden Lore, we are revisiting the characters that put our channel on the map, but this time with significantly upgraded videos, audio, and lore.

By far one of the coolest enemies and armor sets in the game.
Not to mention the best defenses/poise/weight ratio in the entire game
Something interesting, the Silurian and Ordovician are both divided into seven ages.
So with 16 Crucible knights, seven serving under each of the two named commanders, we'd have 16 name sources.
Silurian:
Ludfordian, Gorstian, Homerian, Sheinwoodian, Telychian, Aeronian, and Rhuddanian.
Ordovician:
Hirnantian, Katian, Sandbian, Darriwilian, Dapingian, Floian, and Tremadocian.
These all sound like such Fromsoft names too
Darriwil really let himself go
There is only one issue with this that i've discovered. There are not 7 of each knight order. Through the video, you can count them as all of the knights are shown. There are 9 Axe Knights and their commander Ordovis and 5 Tree Knights and their commander Siluria. While it's possible these name sources still would be quite likely, the division of them is off for this to be completely accurate, as this means we have a total of 10 knights in Axe regalia and only 6 in Tree regalia, commanders included. The other, as Golden Lost indicated, is that the name Darriwil has already been used, specifically by the Bloodhound Knight being hunted by Blaidd when we first meet him. Though two knights having the same name isn't impossible, it makes it less likely this is how all of the knights were named
and from what i know, in the code one of the knighs is actually named Floh, so it makes sense
@@ortzialberdiazpiazu7431 hmm thats interesting, theres a spirit ash named bloodhound floh, and based on OP's theory darrwil is most likely connected, perhaps the bloodhound knights are connected to the crucible aswell
Of all the boss battles I encountered; fighting two of these guys at once was one of the most frustrating experiences in Elden Ring.
I can safely say that, as a paladin build, these gave me far more trouble than the Godskin Duo. I eventually resorted to using Lhutel to distract Ordovis while I took out the Tree Knight.
I ended up quitting the fight and moving on, only to come back and 3-shot the knights near the endgame. They suck, but not as much as the gargoyles did for me.

Once I figured out just how much more aggressive Ordovis was than the Tree knight it just turned into running away until I had Ordovis alone. It was pretty simple at that point but it admittedly took me quite a few failed strategies before I realized that.
I agree that was a tough one for sure.
Almost all the demigods have a Crucible knight keeping an eye on them. The only one that does not have one is Malenia.
And Miquella if you count the knight staring at Mohgwyn Palace as only tied to Mohg.
What about ranni?
rennala isn’t a demigod sure just a shardbearer but is there a crucible knight ar raya lucaria? just curious i can’t remember
@@christopherlyndsay8611 Ranni slew her own flesh and two fingers, absolving herself of the role of empyrean and ever becoming a demigod.
Right because malenia doesnt need one to keep watch over her. She has finlay and her own prowess.
I still want that one ability where they fly up, dive down, and then do a spinning slide.
It's really cool and I wish it was an Aspect of the Crucible incantation.

11:37 I feel like these two Crucible Knights in the Royal Capital are there for Morgott rather than Marika considering their loyalty to Godfrey, Morgott’s relation to Godfrey & his own omen blood. All of which we know they would value more than anything Marika embraced or offered them. Not to mention their love for the Erdtree as a growing entity, which Morgott also deeply cherishes as we know.

The history of the Crucible Knights is one of those few things that makes me really chafe against the limitations of this game and this genre in a good way. I so desperately want to be some way of interacting with the Knights other than combat. They are just such an interesting faction and I need talk to these guys.
Fr, in my 1st playthrough I couldn't help but be fascinated by these guys, to the point when the moment I got my hands on their armor and weapons, I just HAD to play with 'em (had a str/holy faith built too so that made it all the more tempting) , and Ordovis's greatsword + Siluria's Tree became my main set-up for the last 3rd of the game.
Wasn't OP, but it was definitely solid & reliable, and most importantly it was fun.
How I wished there was a quest where you get to talk to one....
Diving further into the story of Godfrey and his crucible Knights, the British celtic inspiration is abundant. To add to this, the only named crucible knights, Ordovis and Siluria, are named after celtic tribes of Britain, specifically in the Welsh borders, the Ordovices and the Silures.
I just watched Cambrian Chronicles' episode on Celtic Britain and it occurred to me this was a more fitting inspiration since these tribes were conquered by Rome aka the Golden Order.
These guys are one of my favorite enemies to fight. Its so engaging and fun to parry and dodge their spells. The fight w 2 of them at once is pretty overkill but doesnt ruin it for me

The Gilded Greatshield dropped by Godrick's knights also mentions primordial red-gold. "The red tinge in the gold coat mirrors the primordial matter that became the Erdtree. The color of homeward yearning."
It's almost definitely just symbolic since Godrick is obsessed with the gold of the Erdtree and him being of the royal lineage, and it doesn't boost Crucible incantations like the Crucible Knights' armor does.

Need to revisit this again since there is another in the dlc, and since it's now confirmed that Godfrey didn't fight the dragon Lord and that it was bayle
Something also interesting is the named crucible knights are also names of Celtic tribes that lived in Roman Brittan. Considering Godfrey has King Arthur and Celtic inspirations it makes sense.
I've heard that Primordial gold being red (Helphen's grace, The amor set, Dragon lightning etc.) while Erd Tree gold being ...um, gold may be connected to The run of death being removed from the elden ring (iirc there were red elements in the death rune)
The first Crucible knight I fought was in Caelid with the misbegotten Warrior. That battle I died like over 30 times but man it was satisfying to finally beat those two. I’m starting a new character and do things I missed in my first play thru cause from your list I missed a couple of Knights in my playthru
Lorewise, I just love how you find them in the most random places. One of them is in a point of Sofria river only accessible via four belfries, the other one is in some random cliff in stormveil, another is in the deeproot depths, another in radahn's castle and another is in an evergaol; they just everywhere.
Something to note, I believe the Crucible Knights are very much more connected to the Misbegotten than previously thought. The Winged Misbegotten ashes say:
"A spirit with the aspect of wings which takes flight to loose arrows from its bow. The misbegotten are held to be a punishment for making contact with the Crucible, and from birth they are treated as slaves, or worse."
This tells us two things:
The Misbegotten both made contact with the Crucible, and actively practice their incantations. (Aspects of the Crucible: Wings is mentioned, which doesn't exist for players, but explains how the misbegotten fly)
Which could tell us that either the Misbegotten and Crucible Knights found friendship in their common mistreatment post-Godfrey, or were actively working together in the days of the Crucible.
The only enemies that'll give me a hard time even after countless hours into this game. Great work as always

The connection between Godrick and the primordial crucible also makes sense if you see why his grafting art is shunned

Grafting and the crucible being connected makes so much sense, how the fuck did that never cross my mind
I only can see the similarities of how the Primordial Crucible promotes devolution-power of beasts and life-and grafting is of a similar nature to the intense mutations on creatures related to the Primordial Crucible; both shunned due to the impure bodies they exist with. Besides that, I don’t see how else they could be related.
I think it's significant that the crucible knights come in two flavors, tree and axe, as this may indicate to whom they owe their allegiance to. The axe is the symbol of Godfrey and this might explain why it is the axe knights that tend to be serving other masters in rebellion of the Erdtree or indifferent to it. Conversely, the tree is the symbol of Marika (and her mightiest weapon, if Mountaintop of the Giants is any indication) which might indicate that the tree knights served her, albeit under the direction of Godfrey. This would help explain why several of them remain to protect Leyndell while no axe knights do as it wouldn't have been their master, merely their boss, who was exiled in favor of Radagon.
I think we actually see the crucibles primordial goo, in the elden beast fight that liquid on the ground. It would make sense as the golden order often absorbs and hide heretical things such as flame, and briar. The goo may be no different
I believe the names of the various rises where you find memory stones may have once been names for the crucible knights

@@Hope_Prevail I think it's implied that it's the rises are where various sorcerers used to live, because we can find various sorceries occasionally in these rises, and there's a site of grace called "Sorcerer's Isle" that has a rise near it.

I really enjoyed this detailed breakdown of the knights. I listened to it as I re -explored the snowfields, and it occured to me that I had never realized there were 2 units comprising the knights or that their numbers were so small (working with the assumption that the closed beta info is cannon, which I think is fine). Thank you again for your lore dives and the effort you and the community has put into discovering the history of the lands between. It's the most fascinating world I've played in in a long time.
After playing the DLC:
By the names of each Crucible knight set, I think they really do take inspiration from the Historical period of earth.
Silurian Period (Siluria)
Ordovician Period (Ordovis)
Devonian Period (Devonia)
maybe in the future we'll also get the Cambrian, Permian and more lmao
Tanith's knight is called Gug, and we know for sure that Gug is in pain
12:41, Now that the DLC has come out we know that it was another dragon Bayle, who fought with Plasidusax. So that raises the question of why these two knights are here. My theory is that they are looking out for the dragons, since anchient dragons were somewhat popular (from what I know).

We need to revisit this now that the DLC has given us more insights on the crucible, the place Marika came from, and so on.
I have a theory that they served Placidusax but after the Dragon War they switched over to the Golden Order and kept thier Crucible powers. It wouldn't make sense for them to be allowed to learn Crucible Incantations with the Golden Order because, First who could teach them? They're the only ones who use those incantations. And Second the Golden Order hates the Crucible So why would they learn them knowing that they hate it ? I feel like Marika saw use them after the Dragon War and Conviced them to join her And Gave them to Godfrey, And that the Crucible Knight in Farum Azula looking at the dragon is Possibly mourning his dead master. Also they Have wings, horns and spit fire like they're immitading the dragons.

In all my 9 play throughs and through the many crucible knights I’ve fought I’ve never once seen them ever do that attack on 12:40

That is interesting. Also I believe you are right in the golden light of the Erdtree being an abnormality. The Erdtree feeds on the souls on the Lands Between which accounts for the gold colour. Also I believe the Erdtree grows IN the crucible itself which is how the souls feed the Outer Will via the Erdtree.

Minor detail, the Gilded Greatshield mentions red tinged Primordial Matter that later became the Erd Tree.

i just realized why the crucible knight sword said the red tinted gold of the erd tree is the true color of the erd tree and the briliant gold isnt, is because when the erdtree and the elden ring was complete it had the rune of death which had a red color to it so when marika removed the rune of death from the elden ring the red tint disappeared and became a brilliant pure gold color
I wear the tree armour and weapons religiously. And the incantations. You could say I serve Siliura
I'll never forgive Fromsoft for not letting us get Crucible Knight Spirit Ashes+Wing Incantations :(

I love the crucible knights, in fact I am playing elden ring again and my character is chasing down the linkage of crucible knights gathering all trinket armour and weapons and incarnation to become crucible knight
Thanks to you, I now know there are three gigachad knights I completely missed in all my playthroughs. The summoned duo, I think I'd rather just kill the snail.
After the dlc trailer, I think we now know where the other crucible knight are
I consider Elmer the Briar a 17th Crucible Knight cause his sword, Regalia of Eochaid, reads he comes from some land called "Eochaid". I believe the crucible knights, or at leats their armors, weapons and figthing styles are native to Eochaid.

Considering these bastards can summon wings, i dont think any of them are stuck anywhere, except the one whos in gaol, that ones probably stuck... but the ones in saiofa river probably anit stuck they can fucking fly man, lol. Like youbsaid, they're more like watching/guarding.
Making a guess, that the crucible knights are all from the Hornset population, though who rebelled against their own and sided with Marika. However cause of her deep hatred of hornsent, even in her divine state, she ordered their banishment.

I feel like the removal of the mention of there being 16 Crucible Knights is partially to allow players to RP as a Crucible Knight themselves.

Managed to beat the crucible knight duo at around level 80 thanks to a +10 dark moon greatsword, the projectiles only did around 470 damage but after molesting the spear guy the moment the named one got 10 meters away I was able to calmly and easily kill the second one

If d the slayer found godwins body and took the hallowbrand, and rogier knew about D’s brother. You must put together that all three of them went through that path but for some reason the beholder lost his sanity, armor, and his dagger became very weathered. Makes you think what did D behold
i dont think those think those things are all nececarrily true. Beholder D got out of the deeproot depts somehow, so he could have just given beholder d the hallowbrand at the aqueduct who could have just mentioned his brother to rogier when they were traveling together.

I think the 2 sects of knights were separate until Godfrey and Marika join forces.

Never found the second crucible in farum azula
Another reason why the crucible knight may be in Stormveil is the great admiration Godrick has for Godfrey.
And on another subject: is it mentioned somewhere that Godfrey fought Placidusax? As far as I know, all information we have about Placidusax is that he exiled himself beyond time after his god fled
It's unconfirmed, but we know Godfrey fought the stormlord and many believe that was placidusax
@@square-table-gaming I believe if Placidusax was the stormlord we would have more hints at that, or even an item that tied them, but what I see actually is that the storm of Stormveil is something different from the lightning of the dragons, since all ashes of war related to the storm use wind control, but no lightning, like what the banished knights use

The Ordovii and Selurii were also two britonic/celtic tribes in pre-Roman Britannia.

One weakness that works against the crucible knights is fire/flames weapons or pots.
Farum Azula is out of time so it's fuzzy. Hence why Maliketh and the Beast Clergyman can exist at separate locations despite being the same person.
